City Pub Group sees increase in revenues despite poor weather and train strikes

  • Revenue increased to £31.7m for the first half, up from £26.7m
  • Like for like sales at London-listed pub operator were also up 14%

City Pub Group has seen an increase in revenues despite poor weather and the continuation of train strikes.

The London-listed high-end pub firm revealed that revenue increased to £31.7million for the first half to 26 June, up from £26.7million the previous year.

The firm also said that like-for-like sales were up by 14 per cent despite the poor weather in July and early August and the continuation of train strikes.

Chairman of City Pub Group Clive Watson (pictured) revealed  that he was looking 'forward to a strong second half'

Chairman of City Pub Group Clive Watson (pictured) revealed  that he was looking ‘forward to a strong second half’

Clive Watson, chairman of City Pub Group said: ‘The company is in a strong position with very low net debt and what we believe is amongst the lowest gearing in the sector.

‘We look forward to a strong second half – Christmas bookings are significantly up and the company is well placed to take advantage of new acquisition opportunities.

‘The economy remains challenging but we are well placed to take advantage of any future upturn.’

City Pub Group shares were down by 0.16 per cent to 85.36p  in late morning trading on Thursday.

Watson co-founded the group in 2011 with fellow entrepreneurs David Bruce and John Roberts after Greene King bought Watson’s last venture, Capital Pub Company, for £93million.

As its name would suggest, Capital Pub Company concentrated on running pubs in London, but using the broader ‘City’ name has given him scope to buy or set up premises in places such as Exeter, Bath, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge.

In June, the company revealed that it had bought a majority stake in Mosaic Pub and Dining Group, bolstering its portfolio of high-end pubs to 52 sites across London, Wales and the South of England.

The business purchased 52 per cent of shares in Mosaic, and has been taking operational control of its estate of nine pubs in London and Birmingham since 26 June.

Levels of harmful air pollutant nitrogen dioxide increase since introduction of Scotland’s first low-emissions zone

  • The amount of nitrogen dioxide rose in Glasgow after older cars were banned

Air pollution increased in Glasgow after the introduction of the low emission zone (LEZ) in June, it has emerged.

Levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) rose in the city centre after older cars and vans were banned from the zone, compared with the same period last year.

SNP-led Glasgow City Council claimed on its website that ‘harmful nitrogen dioxide is being recorded in our city centre at levels that do not meet the legal requirements’.

But testing on Hope Street showed that in the past two years NO2 levels have not exceeded the illegal mark, and have in fact gone up since June when compared with last year.

Levels were, on average, 31 micrograms per cubic metre in June, July and August last year but were 34 this year. The legal limit is 40.

Scotland’s first Low Emission Zone (LEZ) – which bans older vehicles from the city’s roads – was given the green light yesterday despite a last-ditch court bid to stop it

Yesterday an air quality expert told The Scottish Mail on Sunday: ‘Buses are the main polluters, hence the reason levels remain more or less the same as before, and therefore you have to question the point of banning cars.’

Scottish Tory deputy transport spokesman Graham Simpson said that if the figures are worse, the LEZ scheme ‘has to be seen as a failure’.

Glasgow City Council said pollution levels ‘are highly variable and dependent on a number of factors, including weather patterns’.

In June the SNP ramped up its war on motorists and now thousands of drivers risk punishing fines if they travel into Glasgow city centre.

Cars, vans, buses and lorries could be slapped with fines of £60 if they fall foul of the strict new environmental rules.

Scotland’s first Low Emission Zone (LEZ) – which bans older vehicles from the city’s roads – was given the green light despite a last-ditch court bid to stop it.

It meant more than 730,000 vehicles registered in Scotland were not ‘green’ enough to enter the zone unpunished.

Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee are due to follow suit with their own LEZs in June next year.

SNP-run Glasgow Council claimed the drastic measures are necessary because air pollution in the city centre has long been above the legal requirement for ‘green’ environmental targets.

But Steven Grant, Unite Glasgow cab section secretary, argued the electrification of buses – which the council said was responsible for 70 per cent of the limit-breaking emissions – brought pollution well below the legal threshold.

He said at the time: ‘This damaging and punitive plan is going to be devastating for our trade, without a shadow of a doubt.

‘Frustrated taxi drivers are asking, ‘Why are we being punished when the air monitoring shows Glasgow is now below the legal threshold?’

More than half of the city’s 1,421 black cabs do not comply with LEZ requirements so will be forced off the road in the next year.

Facebook has found itself in hot water after wading into the debate over whether off-shore wind farms are responsible for a surge in whale deaths across the east coast.

Environmentalist Michael Shellenberger has accused the internet giant of ‘censoring accurate information’ after it slapped a content warning on a post about the beaching of 300 whales since 2017.

Officials admit there has been an ‘unusual mortality event’ on the east coast in the last six years with strandings reported from New York to North Carolina, but have insisted the string of new wind farms are not responsible.

The controversy blew up days after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was threatened with contempt of Congress amid claims the social media firm removed posts at the direction of the Biden White House.

‘Facebook is censoring accurate information about the relationship between industrial wind energy development and the increase in whale deaths off the East Coast,’ Shellenberger said.

‘Why is Facebook censoring accurate information and spreading disinformation?’

Construction is underway on two new wind farms off Rhode Island and Massachusetts after the White House pledged to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030, enough to power 10 million homes.

Two are already operating off Rhode Island and Virginia Beach despite fury from conservationists and commercial fishing operators, and the $10billion Virginia development is expected to feature more than 175 wind turbines by 2026.

In January, the Clean Ocean Action environmental group asked President Joe Biden to step in and halt the wind farm projects, saying there was evidence it was related to the whale deaths.

‘We’ve gone too far, too fast,’ Clean Ocean Action executive director Cindy Zipf said.

‘Over 2.2 million acres is being allocated to offshore wind and 10,000 miles of cables.

‘This alarming number of deaths is unprecedented in the last half century, the only unique factor from previous years, is the excessive scope, scale, and magnitude of offshore wind powerplant activity in the region.’

The latest dead whale washed ashore on Takanassee Beach in New Jersey on Saturday, and this year is on course to be the worst on record for fatal strandings on the east coast.

Shellenberger has called the issue the ‘biggest environmental scandal in the world’ and delivered a series of angry posts to his thousands of Facebook followers this week.

‘The government says it’s not because of the wind industry’s high decibel pile driving and boat traffic in previously pristine waters,’ he wrote.

‘They’re lying. And now we have the proof.’

That triggered Facebook watchdogs to slap a warning, claiming the post was ‘missing context and could mislead people’.

It also linked to an article by Facebook partner Factcheck.org insisting there is no reason to believe wind farms are to blame.

‘Several factors, experts and officials have said, could be increasing the risk of these hazards,’ the checkers wrote.

‘For one, climate change is warming oceans and changing the distribution of prey that marine species depend on.

‘As a result, whales are altering their migration routes and moving out of protected areas and closer to the shores, where they are more vulnerable to ship strikes and entanglement with fishing gear.’

It pointed to autopsies carried out by the official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggesting that 40 per cent of dead humpbacks were killed by hitting boats or getting tangled in ropes.

But they admit: ‘The causes for the other 60 per cent have been inconclusive, in part, officials say, because the carcasses decompose quickly, making it difficult to determine a cause of death.’

Facebook automatically moves reduces the visibility of posts flagged by its fact-checking partners, including AFP, reducing the visibility of false or misleading content.

But earlier this month its parent company Meta changed its settings allowing users to partially disable the fact-checking that they see.

‘We’re giving people on Facebook even more power to control the algorithm that ranks posts in their feed,’ a Meta spokesman told AFP.

We’re doing this in response to users telling us that they want a greater ability to decide what they see on our apps.’

‘For the last 20 years, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that his social media company is the “digital equivalent of a town square,” committed to factual accuracy, and protecting the natural environment,’ Shellenberger said.

‘Facebook knows its “fact checks” are just their “opinion”.

‘Thus, labeling FactCheck.org, which in this case is simply repeating US government misinformation, as a “fact-checker” is disinformation.’

Sandra Bullock‘s partner Bryan Randall’s death has sparked a 500 per cent increase in donations to the ALS (known as MND in the UK) Association.

The photographer died on Saturday aged 57 after a secret three-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) battle.

After the family asked for people to donate to the ALS Association instead of sending or buying flowers.

Sandra’s sister Gesine wrote in an Instagram post: ‘In lieu of flowers, please donate to ALS Association and Massachusetts General Hospital (links in bio).’

The ALS Association told TMZ that now donations were up 500 per cent over the same time last year in a funding spike.

They told the publication: ‘We’re grateful for the amazing outpouring of support in honor of Bryan.’

‘The money pouring in will help our urgent work to make ALS a livable disease through local care, national advocacy, and global ALS research.’

Sandra called her partner Bryan ‘very patient,’ ‘a saint’ and ‘evolved on a level that is not human’ in a 2021 interview amid his secret ALS battle that led to his tragic passing on Saturday.

The 59-year-old actress spoke about Randall, a photographer, in a 2021 edition of Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris.

‘He’s the example that I would want my children to have,’ the Oscar-winning star said of Randall, who died after battling the disease for three years privately.

In the exchange, Bullock also said that she didn’t feel the need to exchange vows with Randall amid their committed relationship.

‘I am someone who went through the divorce process,’ Bullock said. ‘I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children – three children, his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.

‘So, I don’t want to say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner or a devoted mother.’

Bullock, who was previously wed to Jesse James from 2005-2010, said she didn’t ‘need to be told to be ever-present in the hardest of times’ or ‘to weather a storm with a good man.’.

Family time: Bullock has two adopted children — son Louis, 13, and daughter Laila, 11 — and Bryan has an adult daughter named Skylar from a previous relationship (seen in 2018)

The Speed actress spoke about the relationship dynamics she shared with Randall, a one-time model, and the example he set for her two children – son Louis, 13, and daughter Laila, 10. Randall was also father to daughter Skylar Staten, 29, from a past relationship.

‘There’s two very different ways of looking at things,’ Bullock said. ‘And I don’t always agree with him. He doesn’t always agree with me.

‘But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him that I go, “If they can take away from that, and if that is where they feel drawn to, then he’s the exact right parent.”‘

The Bird Box actress attested to Randall’s faith in the chat, saying, ‘I have a partner who’s very Christian.’

The Blind Side star and Bryan initially crossed paths in 2015 when he was on hand to take pictures for her son’s birthday celebration.

They were last seen publicly in July of 2020 in Studio City, California while out with her two kids.

In the Red Table Talk outing, she said that Randall was a positive presence for her as a parent, though he was not involved in the adoption process.

‘I had Louis first,’ she said. ‘And then when I met Randall, and I was like, and we hadn’t been together that long.’

She continued: ‘I go, “You remember that NDA you signed when you photographed my son?” He was like, “Yeah.” He’s still scared. His whole life had been unraveled because of me.

‘And I said, “You know, that still holds.” And he was like, “Yeah, OK, OK, OK, why?” And I was like, “Cause I’m bringing a child home when I come back from Toronto.” And he was like, “Sorry, what?”‘

Bullock said that her partner was simultaneously ‘so happy, but … scared’ at the development.

Randall’s family issued a statement to People confirming his death, saying, ‘It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS.

‘Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request.’

The statement continued: ‘We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours.

‘At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.’

Before her relationship with Randall, Bullock was in a high-profile romance with Monster Garage host Jesse James.

They met after she brought her motorcycle-obsessed godson on a trip to West Coast Choppers’s Long Beach headquarters in 2003.

The pair ultimately wed in 2005, in front of 270 of their closest friends and family at a ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley.

In March 2010, days after she took home an Academy Award for her performance in The Blind Side, several women came forward about their affairs with Jesse.

A month later, Jesse checked himself into a rehab facility in Arizona for sex addiction after apologizing profusely to Bullock, although that wasn’t enough to save the marriage – they divorced the following June.

In 2017, he told DailyMail.com: ‘Yeah, I did cheat on my wife, yeah… I stood up and took accountability for it and apologised. And that’s [the] end of story.’

Bullock other exes include Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, Bob Schneider, Matthew McConaughey, Don Padilla, Troy Aikman and Tate Donovan.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): Details of fatal disease there is no cure for

What is it?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurogenerative disorder which impacts the nerve cells in the spinal cord and the brain, according to the Mayo Clinic. It gets progressively worse and causes significant muscle control loss in people who have it.

Treatment

There is no cure for ALS and the disease is fatal, but it progresses at different speeds in patients.

Symptoms

The first signs of ALS are twitching of the muscles, weaknesses of the limbs and problems with swallowing and speaking. Progressively, it deteriorates muscle control and impacts an individual’s ability to breathe, move, speak and eat.

ALS symptoms correspond with where nerve cells deteriorate in each person, and could lead to issues walking, tripping, and weakness of the knees, ankles and hands.

It can also lead to problems with muscle cramps and twitching in areas including one’s tongue, arms and shoulders. People with ALS have experienced untimely spells of laughter, tears and yawns, as well as changes to one’s thinking process or behavior, according to the clinic.

Risk factors

Among the risk factors researchers have established for ALS include genetics, as about 10 percent of people diagnosed with it were passed down a gene from a relative, which is called hereditary ALS, according to the clinic. Kids of people who have hereditary ALS have a 50 percent chance of having the gene.

Age is also a factor as the risk of getting the disease trends up toward the age of 75, with the most common range of people who have it between 60 and 85. In terms of gender, men are diagnosed with a higher rate of ALS prior to the age of 65, according to the clinic.

Other factors that have been linked to ALS include smoking and exposure to toxic substances. The clinic reported that military personnel have been diagnosed with ALS at a higher rate.

Causes

There is no known cause of ALS, according to the Mayo Clinic, and heredity plays a factor in a small number of cases.

Lou Gehrig was one of baseball’s preeminent stars while playing for the Yankees between 1923 and 1939. Known as ‘The Iron Horse,’ he played in 2,130 consecutive games before ALS forced him to retire. The record was broken by Cal Ripken Jr. in 1995

Lou Gehrig’s Disease

As well as being known as ALS, it is frequently referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Lou Gehrig was a stalwart first baseman for the New York Yankees between 1923 and 1939. He was famous for his strength and durability, earning the nickname ‘The Iron Horse’ with a record-setting streak of 2,130 consecutive games.

In a July 4, 1939 speech on Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium, the ballplayer famously said, ‘For the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.’

His popularity and fame transcended the sport of baseball. He died two years after his diagnosis on June 2, 1941.

The Little Mermaid fuels 216% increase in searches for filming location Sardinia as fans look to dive into the world of Princess Ariel as part of a new ‘set-jetting’ trend

There has been a huge spike in holiday searches for Sardinia after fans of The Little Mermaid discovered the Disney box office hit was filmed on location on the island.

Following the release in May of the live-action remake of the iconic 1989 cartoon there was a 216 per cent increase in searches to the Mediterranean destination on the easyJet Holidays website.

Fans are ‘flooding online’ to book their own watery adventure on the Italian island where Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, was filmed on the shore alongside Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric, easyJet Holidays said.

The film follows the adventures of the mermaid princess Ariel who is fascinated with the human world and makes a deal with a treacherous sea witch to trade her voice for a life above the water.

The surge in searches for Sardinia is part of a new ‘set-jetting trend’ where film buffs take to the skies in search of ‘destinations providing TV escapism’, easyJet Holidays said.

POPULAR SET-JETTING DESTINATIONS IN EUROPE

Online searches are surging for the following hotspots:

  • Sardinia, Italy: The Little Mermaid has fuelled a 216 per cent increase in holiday searches.
  • Sicily, Italy: The White Lotus is behind a 198 per cent increase in searches.
  • Turkey: Aftersun has led to a 162 per cent increase in search interest.
  • Paris, France: Emily in Paris has encouraged a 143 per cent increase.
  • Granada, Spain: House of The Dragon has inspired a 132 per cent increase.
  • Greece: Glass Onion has led to a 122 per cent increase in searches.

Its findings point to a ‘significant year-on-year increase’ in the new trend, which is being driven by ‘the prevalence of international settings in popular TV shows and movies’.

The travel site revealed that the second season of Emmy-winning drama The White Lotus resulted in a tourism spike of 198 per cent to Sicily, ‘as wanderlusters seek to holiday like wealthy but miserable romantic Tanya McQuoid-Hunt and her put-upon assistant, Portia’.

The premiere season of House of the Dragon, meanwhile, inspired die hard ‘Thronies’, said easyJet Holidays, ‘to flock to the Spanish city of Granada, which has seen a 132 per cent increase in searches’.

Similarly, a statement said, Paris is seeing ‘unwavering interest year on year as hopeful romantics yearn for their own Emily in Paris experience’. Searches for trips there have rocketed by 143 per cent.

EasyJet Holidays added that ‘everyone’s favourite murder-mystery of 2022, Glass Onion, has influenced a 122 per cent increase in searches to the Greek islands’, while coming-of-age drama Aftersun has triggered a reported 162 per cent increase in searches for the destination where it was shot – Turkey.

This revelation has inspired a new genre of package holidays for fans wanting to bring TV and film fantasies to life.

EasyJet Holidays has crafted a ‘Jetflix fix‘ for ‘keen telly-travellers’ to immerse themselves in their favourite on-screen worlds in destinations such as Sicily and Paris.

Commercial director Paul Bixby said: ‘We all seek escapism through our screens and so it’s no surprise that our favourite TV shows and movies are influencing our travel choices.’
