Congress has been warned to be on high alert for Chinese spies after a suspected Beijing espionage plot was uncovered in British parliament.

Earlier this week, a parliamentary researcher with links to MPs with classified information was arrested for ‘spying for China.’

The suspect is thought to be linked to numerous Conservative members of Parliament – including Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Alicia Kearns.

According to reports, several of the members with links to the suspected spy are ‘privy to classified or highly sensitive information’, however none have been accused of wrongdoing.

The suspect, who was arrested under the Official Secrets Act, has not been charged, and has said he is ‘completely innocent.’ He has not been named by police.

The suspected breach sparked a Metropolitan Police investigation and led to MI5 warning more operatives could be working in the highest levels of British democracy. Now the United States has been warned it could be a target.

A Chinese national named Fang Fang or Christine Fang, targeted up-and-coming local politicians in the Bay Area and across the country who had the potential to make it big on the national stage, including Rep. Eric Swalwell

Rep. Mike Gallagher, who chairs the House Select Committee on the Communist Party, told DailyMail.com that educating members of Congress about the threat of infiltration is critical – especially in light of the recent UK incident.

‘One thing we’re trying to do here on the Select Committee is to educate people -members and staff- about the nature of not only traditional CCP espionage but United Front work,’ he said.

‘I think United Front work is a poorly understood phenomenon. I don’t think your average member understands what it is. The more we can educate members about this phenomenon, the better they can defend themselves.’

The United Front is the political strategy utilized by the CCP to advance China’s influence and power globally through a variety of methods, including by deploying spies to try to change policies of foreign nations to be more pro-China or gain sensitive information.

Congress has be infiltrated by Chinese spies attempting to get access to classified information in recent years.

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell’s ties to a suspected Chinese spy Christine Fang, known as ‘Fang Fang,’ sparked an Ethics Committee investigation into his conduct.

The committee ended up not taking any disciplinary action against Swalwell, but issued a letter warning lawmakers about the threat of foreign infiltration.

‘Members should be conscious of the possibility that foreign governments may attempt to secure improper influence through gifts and other interactions,’ the letter stated.

Fang Fang left China to go to college in the U.S. in 2011, and then worked on developing relationships with key lawmakers, including Swalwell, in order to get access to sensitive information.

She reportedly raised money for his 2014 campaign and attended a number of events that the congressman attended.

The FBI, who was investigating Fang Fang, first brought their concerns to the congressman in 2015. At that point, Swalwell said he broke off any contact with the suspected spy.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy kicked Swalwell off of the House Intelligence Committee earlier this year due to his Fang Fang connection.

But Swalwell isn’t the only lawmaker who has fallen for the ploy.

A former aide to Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., who worked as her driver in California for 20 years was found to have ties to the CCP.

Feinstein was chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time.

She insisted that the spy ‘never had access to classified or sensitive information or legislative matters’ and was let go after the FBI informed her that her office was infiltrated.

Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., put the two Democrats on blast for falling for China’s ‘sophisticated’ spy network.

‘Communist China has a sophisticated and enormous global spy network that has already breached the highest levels of government like in the cases of Senator Feinstein’s aide or the targeting of Congressman Swalwell,’ said Waltz.

Waltz said he met with Canadian member of Parliament Michael Chong who has also been targeted by the Chinese.

‘We’ll continue to press the intelligence community on their operations to combat these espionage efforts and safeguard members of Congress.’

Waltz sits on the House Armed Services, Foreign Affairs and Intelligence committees.

Experts say that it is easier for Chinese spies to get access to American secrets through U.S. lawmakers than most think.

Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society think tank in the UK, told Dailymail.com that Chinese spy infiltration in Congress ‘could easily happen in the U.S.’ because ‘nobody had really understood it could happen in such a spectacular way here.

‘Who’s to say there aren’t people the U.S. and other Western democracies who have been turned, and who may well be involved in Chinese influence operations or spying for China.’

‘It’s similar to what the Russians used to do, sending proper spies who were not obviously connected to the regime,’ Mendoza continued.

‘It seems unlikely China isn’t going to do that.’

He urged Congress to be ‘more alert’ to the ‘dangers’ of Chinese efforts and treat it on the same level as Russia.

‘It’s difficult to stop someone completely disconnected and able to cover their tracks.’

Mendoza said politicians should look closely at the backgrounds of people they are hiring.

‘If you have spent a considerable amount of time in China that should be a red flag that should mean you dig into someone’s background.

‘An incident like tis reminds us to be vigilant and double down on our processes.

‘We don’t want to be alarmist and have a reds under the beds McCarthyite position (but) sometimes we are not alert to obvious signs.’

Round Hill shares rocket on £376m music deal

Shares in the copyright owner of a string of songs by the Supremes and Louis Armstrong surged 64 per cent yesterday after it agreed to a £376m US takeover.

Round Hill Music Royalty (RHM), whose catalogue of more than 150,000 songs includes I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) by Meat Loaf, announced a deal with Nashville-based Concord.

The announcement also threw the spotlight on London-listed rival Hipgnosis, whose shares jumped more than 15.6 per cent amid speculation it might also prove an attractive takeover target. Its catalogue includes songs from Shakira and Neil Young.

RHM was founded by Josh Gruss, a former Bear Stearns investment banker who also previously worked in the music industry.

Gruss will net around £24m for his stake in the company.

Concord chief executive Bob Valentine said RHM had ‘built an impressive portfolio of music rights which generate revenue across a variety of income streams’.

RHM’s catalogue is concentrated on ‘evergreen’ music made before 2010. Its business involves shelling out for musicians’ back catalogues, giving them a one-off payday. It then earns revenues when the songs are played on the radio or streaming platforms.

The biggest-earning song last year was the mournful 1975 hit All By Myself written by Eric Carmen followed by Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World.

They helped the company achieve royalties of £29m last year, and a £850,000 profit.

‘That is until I met Danny. Danny makes me feel home wherever we are. I wanted to share this once-in-a-lifetime moment with all our loved ones in my constant, favorite place: Winter Park, Colorado.’

Taylor’s grandfather Reverend Stanley Tate officiated the wedding as ‘family played a big part in helping out – it was an all-hands-on-deck situation.’

Hill called the white cold-shoulder, ruffled custom Etro gown she donned while barefoot for the outdoor ceremony the ‘dress of my dreams.’

‘Thank you Etro [creative director Marco de Vincenzo and head of celebrity relations Marco Cacchione]!’ the Babylon actress gushed on Instagram.

‘You saw my vision and created something more beautiful than I ever could’ve imagined and this dress felt so me, especially since I wanted to get married barefoot because I believe it makes me feel grounded and I wanted to be connected to the earth that I’m from. So thank you for seeing me as clearly as you did.’

The only celebrity guest in attendance was The Terminal List action star Patrick Schwarzenegger, who appeared to have known Fryer as far back as their time attending USC.

The 29-year-old son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver brought along his girlfriend since 2015, Abby Champion, joking someone should cast them in the next season of Paramount’s hit neo-western drama Yellowstone.

MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Round Hill is a Nashville-based, London-listed song royalties firm that’s blowing the music industry’s trumpet

Music has enduring appeal – but some tracks are more durable than others. Round Hill Music uses a blend of experience, gut feel and financial grit to pick the winners – songs that will still be enjoyed for years to come.

The company makes money from royalties, payments made every time a song is performed, played or used in any form, from the background hum in a shopping centre to the centrepiece of a West End musical.

Nashville-based Round Hill listed on the London stock market in autumn 2020 at $1 a share. Today the stock is 78 cents (63p) on fears of the effect of high interest rates.

These fears seem overdone. Round Hill owns 51 music catalogues, which include more than 120,000 songs, group revenues are growing fast and the dividend is yielding more than 5.5 per cent.

Some market watchers consider the music industry to be inherently flaky but Round Hill chief executive Josh Gruss strives to prove the sceptics wrong.

A committed guitarist from the age of 12, Gruss stems from an illustrious financial family and was a pioneer of the music royalty sector, establishing his first fund more than a decade ago.

Round Hill owns both original songs and recordings. Whenever a Round Hill-owned track is streamed on Spotify or any other online platform, the firm receives a fee.

When CDs or records are sold, fees change hands. And royalties are also due when songs are performed, played as background music or used in films, shows, TV programmes or advertisements.

Hit songs tend to be played over and over in the first year or two. But many lose their mojo after that first flush of enthusiasm.

That is why more than 70 per cent of Round Hill’s portfolio dates back to before 2000, while only 6 per cent stems from after 2015.

Ad campaigns earn Round Hill serious sums

What A Wonderful World, for example, was written in 1967. Made famous by Louis Armstrong, the song is now part of a global advertising campaign by French cosmetics brand Lancome, earning serious money for Round Hill along the way.

Pets at Home is using I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That), a 1990s hit by the rock group Meat Loaf, and Lays Crisps uses an adaptation of the 1970s classic All By Myself for its Champions League advert.

All three tracks are part of the Round Hill portfolio, pieces of music that are known and loved the world over.

This is no accident. Round Hill adopts a forensic approach, asking for extensive royalty data to assess whether songs are worth buying and if so, at what price.

There is also potential to enhance returns once tracks are on the roster and Round Hill has a team of administrators devoted to this. Sales for 2022 rose 32 per cent to $32.4 million, while the dividend is up 13 per cent to 4.88 cents.

Growth has persisted this year, with sales of at least $35 million expected, rising to almost $40 million by 2025.

Analysts have pencilled in a dividend of at least 4.5 cents for the next three years and Gruss is confident about the future, spending almost £9 million on shares last month alone, taking his family’s stake to 6.3 per cent.

Controversy has surrounded the music royalty sector so Round Hill asked two firms to value its portfolio.

Both delivered valuations of about $600 million. That equates to a net asset value per share of $1.27, implying that Round Hill shares are significantly undervalued.

Midas verdict: The music industry is vast, vibrant and expanding fast. Round Hill Music Royalty Fund is small in this £75 billion market but Gruss is a smart operator and the shares, at 78 cents (63p), offer attractive dividend income and long-term growth prospects. Buy.
