Maya has had a hugely successful first half of 2023, presenting her second series of Love Island as well as landing lucractive brand deals.

She also scored the August front cover of British Vogue, posing with a copy of the mag in Ibiza after admitting that she ‘burst into tears’ when she got the call.

After moving to London aged 16, Maya landed a part-time job at the high street shop Urban Outfitters, and had also worked as a runner for the production company Jump Off.TV.

Eventually, Maya began to host its weekly music video countdown, before moving to TRACE Sports on Sky, and Rinse FM.

In 2014, Maya joined MTV on their show The Wrap Up, and in 2017, she presented the pre-Brit Awards Party as well as a Facebook Live from the red carpet.

Stave off Alzheimer’s by getting leaner muscles from regular gym work-outs, study says

  • US researchers used information from 450,243 people in the UK Biobank study
  • People with lifelong, higher, lean muscle mass had a 12 per cent lower risk

It’s not just good for the body, being lean can also help the mind, research shows.

Having high levels of lean muscle has been linked to lower chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

People with lifelong, higher, lean muscle mass had a 12 per cent lower risk, researchers found, as well as improved brainpower in old age.

Obesity is a known risk factor of Alzheimer’s but while lower levels of lean muscle have been linked to a greater risk , it is not clear if this tends to come before or after a diagnosis.

To try and find out, the researchers from University of California San Francisco used a genetic prediction technique called Mendelian randomisation, to obtain data on the link between lean muscle and Alzheimer’s.

The researchers from University of California San Francisco estimated lean muscle and fat tissue in the arms and legs, taking into consideration age, sex and genetic ancestry. On average, higher, lean muscle mass was associated with a modest, but statistically robust, reduction in Alzheimer's disease risk, they said

A study by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine revealed that global dementia cases are set to nearly triple by 2050, from 57.4million to 152.8. But the rate of illness is expected to increase varies between different parts of the world. In Western Europe, cases are expected to rise by just 75 per cent, mainly due to an ageing population, while they are expected to double in North America. But the biggest increase is expected to be seen in North Africa and the Middle East, where cases are projected to rise by 375 per cent. Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia

But the biggest increase is expected to be seen in North Africa and the Middle East, where cases are projected to rise by 375 per cent. Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia

They drew on information from 450,243 people in the UK Biobank study – an independent sample of 21,982 people with Alzheimer’s; and 41,944 people without; and a further sample of 7329 people with; and 252,879 people without, the disease to validate the findings.

The researchers estimated lean muscle and fat tissue in the arms and legs, taking into consideration age, sex and genetic ancestry.

On average, higher, lean muscle mass was associated with a modest, but statistically robust, reduction in Alzheimer’s disease risk, they said.

This finding was replicated in the further sample of 7,329 people with, and 252,879 people without, Alzheimer’s disease; using different measures of lean muscle mass – trunk and whole body.

Lean mass was also associated with better performance on cognitive tasks but this association did not explain the protective effect of lean mass on Alzheimer’s disease risk, researchers say.

Body fat was also not associated with the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, but it was associated with poorer cognitive task performance, according to the findings published in BMJ Medicine.

The authors wrote: ‘These analyses provide new evidence supporting a cause-and-effect relation between lean mass and risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

They add that the findings ‘highlight the importance of distinguishing between lean mass and fat mass when investigating the effect of adiposity measures on health outcomes’.

But they suggest the findings need to be replicated elsewhere before informing public health or clinical practice.

They add: ‘Also, more work is needed to determine the cut-off values for age and degree of pathology of Alzheimer’s disease after which modifications of lean mass might no longer reduce the risk.’

WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological disorders

A GLOBAL CONCERN

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders (those affecting the brain) which impact memory, thinking and behaviour.

There are many types of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

Some people may have a combination of different types of dementia.

Regardless of which type is diagnosed, each person will experience dementia in their own unique way.

Dementia is a global concern but it is most often seen in wealthier countries, where people are likely to live into very old age.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED?

The Alzheimer’s Society reports there are more than 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK today. This is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting between 50 and 75 per cent of those diagnosed.

In the US, it’s estimated there are 5.5 million Alzheimer’s sufferers. A similar percentage rise is expected in the coming years.

As a person’s age increases, so does the risk of them developing dementia.

Rates of diagnosis are improving but many people with dementia are thought to still be undiagnosed.

IS THERE A CURE?

Currently there is no cure for dementia.

But new drugs can slow down its progression and the earlier it is spotted, the more effective treatments can be.

The couple previously dated from 2019 to 2021 before sparking new romance rumors when they were spotted kissing at Coachella last month.

At the time, a source told People that the exes had been back in touch for months before the music festival in Indio, California.

‘They have been friendly for several months and hung out,’ the source said. ‘They always seemed to have a special connection.’

Since then, the duo have been practically inseparable. Besides the concert, the Havana singer was seen leaving the Stitches hitmaker’s Manhattan apartment on Thursday night.

Both singers have been friends with Swift, 33, for many years.

The Dear Reader singer welcomed Cabello and her former band Fifth Harmony as surprise guests on her 1989 tour in 2015.

Mendes was the opening act for part of that same tour.

Attentive fans caught the Worth It songstress and Lyle Lyle Crocodile actor heading to their seats in the VIP section of MetLife stadium on Friday.

Lauren Goodger goes low-key in all black as she leaves the gym with daughter Larose and a pal… after vowing to undergo health overhaul

Lauren Goodger went for a cosy look after hitting the gym on Thursday.

The former TOWIE star, 36, was seen leaving her local fitness emporium alongside her daughter Larose and a pal while clad in all black.

Lauren, who shares daughter Larose, 22 months, with her ex Charles Drury, held hands with the tot who was also holding hands with Larose.

Her trip to the gym comes after Lauren voiced her determination to undergo an ‘intense’ three month health and fitness overhaul.   Posting to her Instagram story last week, Lauren said she wanted ‘to do something for myself’ when deciding to start her new workout programme.

Lauren said: ‘Very intense but amazing results. This is my time. I’m starting a three-month plan.’

Meanwhile, a source told OK! Magazine: ‘For Lauren, it’s not about losing weight or changing her body. She wants to feel good on the inside. When you eat better, you feel better.

‘She’s so busy being a mum and she’s always on the go. She cooks healthy, homemade meals for Larose, but when it comes to herself, she finds herself ordering takeaways or going to a drive-thru.

‘She now has meal preps from Woo’d By Food, which includes things like chicken and rice, and fish and potatoes, and she’ll be doing lots of walking, yoga and stretches.’

Last month, Lauren finally admitted that she underwent a Brazilian bum lift, after previously denying having the procedure to plump up her behind.

As the TOWIE star prepares to revert to a more nature look, she revealed she had the op in 2017 and also had her breasts enlarged in 2013 from a 34D to a 34E.

Lauren said she ‘has been unhappy for a while’ and plans to tone down her look to be more ‘natural’.

She told OK!: ‘For a couple of years now I’ve been thinking, ‘Why did I ever get my boobs done?’ I haven’t been happy for a while, but when I fell pregnant with Larose, my boobs became even bigger and I hated the way I looked.

‘I look back at old pictures before the boob job and I had lovely boobs. I just wish I could go back to natural Lauren.’

The TV personality explained how she jetted off to Turkey for a BBL and described it as ‘the worst experience’ of her life.

Lauren said she is desperate to have a ‘natural bum’ again but isn’t sure how to go about getting it as ‘there isn’t a procedure that can reverse the BBL’.

She added: ‘I’m not sure how I’m going to do that yet. I’m not sure if there is a procedure that can reverse the BBL.

‘I’m looking into potentially getting the fat sucked out, but I don’t know if that’s an option. I’m going to speak to lots of different surgeons and figure out my options.’

A BBL is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves the transfer of fat to help create more fullness in your bottom.

The surgeon will use liposuction to remove fat from other areas of your body, such as your hips, stomach, and thighs, which is then injected into the skin, to create a more rounded, full look.

Back in 2011, the mum-of-one had a nose job and has always been open about using lip fillers.
