  • READ MORE: Eyedrops recalled by FDA due to fears they contain deadly germs

Nearly 30 tons of ground beef have been recalled in three states for possibly containing a deadly food poisoning bug.

Routine testing of the meat sold by American Foods Group, also known as Green Bay Dressed Beef, in Wisconsin, found it contained Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).

The bacteria are generally found in animal intestines and, if consumed, can cause stomach aches, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and, in rare cases, death from related infections.

The company recalled three varieties of its bulk ground beef that were shipped from Wisconsin to grocery stores big and small in Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Tuesday.

This is just over 58,000 pounds, or nearly 30 tons.

The USDA suggests cooking meat to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius) and using a meat thermometer to measure temperature to kill harmful bacteria like E. coli

The affected products, which all came in 10-pound plastic tubes, were produced on August 14.

The products were: 90050 Beef Fine Ground 81/19 — lot code D123226026, 20473 Beef Halal Fine Ground 73/27 — lot code D123226027, and 20105 Beef Fine Ground 73/27 — lot code D123226027.

There have been no reported cases of human contamination, though the USDA advised consumers to throw out any affected beef to be safe.

E. coli are bacteria typically found in the intestines of animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, and deer.

While most are harmless, some can cause a host of gastrointestinal symptoms, including stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.

STEC is most commonly associated with foodborne outbreaks, according to the CDC. Contaminated foods can include ground beef, unpasteurized milk, raw produce, and non-disinfected water.

This form of E. coli lives in animals’ GI tracts, though they don’t become sick. Exact numbers vary, but it’s estimated that E. coli infections cause about 265,000 illnesses and 100 deaths per year.

Young children and older adults are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill, and the majority of these infections occur between June and September in the US, according to the Mayo Clinic, though it’s not clear why.

In rare cases, sufferers can develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

This is a condition in which there is an abnormal destruction of blood platelets and red blood cells.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the damaged blood cells can clog the kidney’s filtering system, resulting in life-threatening kidney failure.

E. coli illness is typically treated with rest and fluids to prevent dehydration. There are no treatments developed specifically for infection.

Cable car horror leaves children trapped 900ft above the ground after wire snaps above Pakistan valley

  • Two others were in vehicle when wire snapped at a height of 900 feet

Six children were among eight people trapped inside a cable car dangling over a deep Pakistan valley on Tuesday, officials said.

The children – who have been stranded since about 6am local time (1am GMT) – were using the chairlift to cross the valley to get to school in a mountainous area in Battagram, about 120 miles north of Islamabad.

The cable then suddenly broke at a height of 900 feet midway through its journey in a remote mountainous region.

Syed Hammad Haider, a senior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial official, said: ‘We have requested the KP government to provide a helicopter because the relief activity is not possible without the help of a helicopter,’ he said.

The National Disaster Management Agency said in a statement that six children and two adults were on board at a height of 900 feet, and that the Pakistan Army had been asked to carry out a helicopter rescue mission.

It said an army helicopter had been moved to the area for a rescue operation after attempts at fixing the fault had been unsuccessful.

Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar has said that all ‘dilapidated and non-compliant chairlifts’ must close immediately, per a statement from his office.

Many children who live in remote and mountainous parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province rely on cable cars to travel to and from school and back.

However, some chairlifts lack regular maintenance, meaning they can be a risky form of travel.

Barbie brawl! Shocking moment grandmother knocks woman dressed in pink to the ground after she complained about child watching YouTube videos during screening of Margot Robbie blockbuster

  • Cinemagoers had to be restrained as they brawled during the closing credits

Shocking video shows the moment a brawl erupts between two women after one complained that the grandchild of the other had been watching YouTube videos in the cinema, interrupting a screening of the new Barbie movie.

The footage starts with a large crowd of cinemagoers arguing with one another from their seats in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as the credits are rolling, with Billie Eilish‘s ‘What Was I Made For?’ heard playing in the background.

Suddenly one woman wearing pink trousers storms up the stairs to another, who is donning a fuchsia jacket, before violently shoving her to the ground as a man tries to intervene.

The woman who was knocked down quickly gets back to her feet and tries to exact some revenge on her attacker, reportedly a grandmother who was angry at remarks made about her grandchild.

The two women can be seen insulting each other, while the man makes sure he stays between them and tries to keep them apart as the footage ends.

As an argument between audience members erupts, one woman storms up the stairs of the cinema to confront another

The incident took place in the Bourbon Shopping Centre in Sao Paulo, in Brazil, on Monday, July 24.

The victim, named in Brazilian media as Melissa Caroline, reportedly took to social media to explain her side of the story.

She said that she was attacked by a woman after complaining that she was unhappy that a young girl had made noise throughout the film.

Melissa said: ‘The film is playing and the child opens YouTube next to me, just in time for Billie’s song.

‘I complained about it to her mother, and the others around started calling me a slacker, a slut, and making derogatory remarks.’

She reportedly called the police over the matter, adding: ‘I simply said that the film’s age limit was 12 and that she shouldn’t be there.

‘And I said out loud: “Ask your mother what a sugar daddy is, because that’s what it says in the movie.”

She also said: ‘I just said it the whole time, you can even hear it in the video that I said it. I didn’t curse at anyone, I just wanted to watch my movie in peace.’

Melissa said: ‘That was what happened. I didn’t look for a fight with anyone, I didn’t raise my voice with anyone.

‘They simply took a child who didn’t behave to the cinema, but from the grandmother’s attitude, you can already imagine why. At no time was I rude to the child. I just said she wasn’t in her home.’

The cinema has reportedly not commented on the matter. It is currently unclear if the police are involved.

The new Barbie movie has been a box office hit around the world, and quickly became the biggest film of the year in the US.

It made over £120 million ($155 million) on its opening weekend, according to its distributor Warner Bros.

How to get a claim off the ground if your flight’s cancelled or delayed https://latestnews.top/how-to-get-a-claim-off-the-ground-if-your-flights-cancelled-or-delayed/ https://latestnews.top/how-to-get-a-claim-off-the-ground-if-your-flights-cancelled-or-delayed/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2023 01:12:13 +0000 https://latestnews.top/2023/06/14/how-to-get-a-claim-off-the-ground-if-your-flights-cancelled-or-delayed/ When Jacqueline Morgan arrived at Birmingham Airport two hours before her flight to Greece, she never thought she would be watching it take off from the departure lounge. When Jacqueline Morgan arrived at Birmingham Airport two hours before her flight to Greece, she never thought she would be watching it take off from the departure lounge.

But huge delays at security meant that the office administrator, from Dudley in the West Midlands, and her friend, Shirley Halliday, were stuck in queues for two hours and did not make it to their gate until it was too late.

Jacqueline was one of more than 20 Ryanair passengers due to fly to Rhodes at 7am on May 6 who were left stranded because of disarray at the airport.

She says: ‘The crowds were massive — there were thousands of people in the queue at security. Staff told us no one would miss their flight while blocking us from joining the fast queue.’

After missing her flight, the 62-year-old was assured by airport staff that she would be reimbursed if she booked a new flight.

But a month later, she is still waiting for a refund of more than £800 for the new flight, train tickets to transfer to another airport and a hotel room.

A Ryanair spokesman said: ‘Due to security delays at Birmingham Airport a small number of passengers missed their flight to Rhodes on May 6. It is a passengers responsibility to ensure they are at the gate before it closes.’

An airport spokesman admitted that it is was the source of the delay, but denied compensation, telling customers to claim on their insurance.

Jacqueline is just one of thousands of passengers caught up in travel turmoil at Britain’s airports. On Monday, around 15,000 passengers were stranded after easyJet cancelled more than 100 flights due to thunderstorms.

As Britain braces for another summer of travel chaos, Money Mail explains your rights if you get caught up in it…

Can I claim due to queues at security?

If you miss your flight because of long queues at security, then it is unlikely you will be able to claim compensation from your airline.

These checks are carried out by the airport, which means your airline is not liable to pay compensation or refund you on this basis.

If you miss your flight because you do not get to the gate in time, then it is deemed to be your fault, according to Gary Rycroft, of law firm Joseph A. Jones & Co.

The airline is not obligated to provide you with a replacement flight and you will have to pay if you still want to travel to your final destination.

Get in touch with your airline if you think you might miss your flight because of a long queue. If enough passengers are caught up in this chaos, then there is a chance the flight will be delayed.

Some airlines will rebook you on to the next available flight for a fee. Ryanair charges customers who arrive at the check-in desk any time between 40 minutes before their flight’s scheduled departure time, to one hour after, a £100 fee per passenger to move to the next available flight.

But beware, this may exceed the cost of booking a new ticket.

At easyJet, you can pay a £110 ‘rescue fee’ to move to the next available flight if you arrive at the airport less than two hours after yours departed.

Virgin Atlantic customers who miss their flight will be booked on to the next available plane with the airline for free. You may be able to make a claim for missing your flight on your travel insurance.

Most policies will pay out if you arrive late to the airport because you were stuck in heavy traffic or your car broke down. Policies will list specific reasons you are covered for, so read the terms and conditions carefully.

Missed flight insurance is not usually included in standard travel policies, and only on offer as an add-on, says Rebecca Goodman, of price comparison site Comparethemarket.

As for the airport, your chances of claiming compensation are very slim, says Jo Rhodes, of consumer group Which?.

She says: ‘No large UK airport currently has a policy to compensate passengers in these circumstances. If you are in a long queue and worried you are in danger of missing your flight, it’s essential you speak up and make a fuss. Most airports will bring you to the front of the queue if your flight is departing imminently.’

What if the flight is late?

Under UK law, airlines must provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late.

But there are exceptions to this rule. If the delay was caused by ‘extraordinary circumstances’, such as extreme weather or strike action, then don’t expect to receive any compensation, says the Civil Aviation Authority.

How much compensation you qualify for depends on the distance you were travelling.

Limited cover: Most insurance policies will pay out if you arrive late at the airport because you were stuck in heavy traffic or your car broke down

For short-haul flights of less than 1,500km (for example, London to Split in Croatia) you are entitled to £220 if you are delayed by more than three hours. For distances of 3,500km, such as Greece, it’s £350. Compensation for any further than this is £520.

During your delay your airline must provide food and drink, and accommodation if you are delayed overnight. If you are delayed by more than five hours and no longer want to travel, then you are entitled to a full refund.

But once you accept a refund, or do not move to the first available flight, then your airline is not required to provide you with food, drink or accommodation.

and if i miss my connection?

If you miss your connecting flight because of a delay during the first leg of your journey, then you may be entitled to compensation, but usually only if you booked both flights as a single booking, according to Citizens Advice.

You should contact the airline as soon as possible to reschedule your second flight. If you booked the two flights separately, then you may have to pay for another flight if you miss your connection.

This is because you failed to arrive for your flight within the recommended time, so will not be entitled to compensation from the second airline.

If you were delayed by less than three hours, then you also may not be entitled to compensation from your original airline, even if you missed your connection.

Some insurance providers will cover missed connections if the airline is not obliged to pay compensation, according to Ms Goodman. Check your policy to see if connections are included.

Sean Tipton, of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), says: ‘The best way to protect yourself when booking two flights is to do it through a travel agent. The two flights are then treated legally as one contract, so you can claim directly from the airline.’

A wing and a prayer! Pilot’s miraculous save after hitting the ground while performing stunt just yards from spectators but managing to regain control and keep flying

  •  The pilot escaped safely and landed with a destroyed right wingtip

A pilot saved himself from crash landing his plane while brazenly performing a stunt in front of spectators.

The pilot – who was flying a Van’s RV-7A aircraft during the Allen Aeroclub in Rio Negro – came too close to the ground, as the plane’s right wing shaved the landing.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, the pilot escaped safely and landed with a destroyed right wingtip.

Damage to the craft didn’t go unnoticed by authorities, with the Argentinian Transportation and Safety Board launching an investigation into the mishap.

‘We were in front, and a piece of plastic from the plane flew at us and it continued as if nothing had happened,’ one of the spectators told Aviation24.

‘Nobody said anything, it seemed like part of the show,’ he recounted, although the public is heard screaming in the videos released.
