Erling Haaland admits he would have been ‘FUMING’ if Manchester City had been at the wrong end of Nathan Ake’s controversial goal against Fulham

  • Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick in a dominant 5-1 victory over Fulham
  • Nathan Ake though put Manchester City 2-1 ahead in controversial fashion
  • Haaland admitted that Fulham should feel hard done by from City’s second goal

Erling Haaland admitted he would have been ‘fuming’ if Manchester City had been on the wrong end of their controversial second goal against Fulham.

With the score level at 1-1, Nathan Ake put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead with a header, though many expected it to be ruled out for offside.

Fulham’s defensive line had moved up, leaving Manuel Akanji offside as the defender jumped over the ball before it hit the back of the net.

Referee Michael Oliver awarded the goal in a decision which was not overturned by VAR, leaving Fulham players and boss Marco Silva fuming – as City then went on to run away with a dominant 5-1 victory.

Haaland, who netted his first hat-trick of the season during the victory, made an honest admission after the game as he said: ‘It was the perfect end of the week. It’s good to be back. In the end we win 5-1 and it’s well deserved. I think it was offside as well, I feel bad for them, I would be fuming after this as well. It must be a horrible feeling for them.

‘Last year was also difficult to start but we’ve been taking more points now. In the end it’s been a perfect start because we’ve won four games, but we have a much higher level and it’s about working towards that.’

Oliver after consulting with his assistant decided that Akanji hadn’t sought to gain an advantage despite feinting to get the ball and raise a leg which appeared to influence Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

VAR official Tony Harrington decided no error had been made so it didn’t merit Oliver watching again pitch-side.

However, prior to the restart, the goal was shown on the giants screens at the Etihad, prompting pandemonium among the Fulham players and a long delay, as the rather obvious offside was seemingly clear to all.

Fulham boss Silva after the game said: ‘What I can say is that everyone that plays football, that has played football that has some knowledge about football is one hundred per cent sure that you disallow that goal. Of course, anyone would be furious if a goal like that comes against you.

‘For the linesman, it can be difficult. Is he in an offside position, can he see or not? But for the VAR it’s impossible not to disallow that goal.

‘It’s clear he [Akanji] is in the line of the ball. He pulled away from the line of the ball in the direction of the goal and influenced completely the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper’s reaction. Its’ a clear offside and this is what will concern anyone in football. How that goal was allowed by the VAR?’

Mail Sport’s Chris Foy said that Oliver would have ruled out Ake’s goal if he had been sent to his screen.

As the drama of the transfer window begins to die down, Premier League clubs will now have to make do with their current squads until January.

The big spenders in the division have bolstered, the middle of the road sides have made significant additions and the teams expected to fight it out at the bottom of table have also added to their ranks.

Transfers can make or break a side’s fate during this 38-game marathon, with some teams certain to be cursing their luck that they couldn’t get a major deal over the line or ecstatic that their brand-new signing has come good.

Supporters of each Premier League team will have their own minds already made up about their activity, but how does Mail Sport rank your team’s dealings?

Here, we reveal our A-E transfer ratings…

Chelsea were among the Premier League's biggest spenders, with Moises Caicedo arriving

Declan Rice moved to Arsenal for over £100million after leaving boyhood club West Ham

Arsenal – B

Arsenal have added well during this transfer window, bringing in faces such as Ajax centre back Jurrien Timber and Chelsea attacker Kai Havertz, alongside the mega money also splashed on Declan Rice from West Ham.

Timber’s long-term injury so early into his Gunners career will be a disappointment for Mikel Arteta’s men, though, while Havertz’s up-and-down time at Stamford Bridge raises question marks about his credentials.

Selling Granit Xhaka has barely been felt in north London, however, with Rice slotting into that central area with ease.

The astronomical £105m transfer fee for the ex-Hammers man saw rivals Manchester City back out of the deal, but his start at Arsenal shows it was a move worth pursuing.

Kai Havertz also arrived at the Emirates for a significant fee but has failed to make an impact

Aston Villa – A

Aston Villa’s transfer business stands out and shows their ambition. Certainly, Unai Emery will want to prove their seventh-placed finish last season was no fluke.

Villa are an attractive outfit to join, clinching European Conference League football recently after destroying Hibernian over two legs to officially make the group stages.

The European market has been smartly exploited this transfer window by the Midlands side, showcased by the signings of Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen and Pau Torres from Villarreal.

Diaby, an exciting talent who is already impressing in England, has scored twice so far in his new surroundings.

Villa have also been smart with their business, sealing a deal for Youri Tielemans on a free transfer while also securing a loan move for Clement Lenglet from Barcelona.

Bournemouth – A

Bournemouth fans will be delighted by their activity this window with new Spanish head coach Andoni Iraola opting for plenty of young talent to add to his squad.

Signings such as Max Aarons, Alex Scott, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra saw the Cherries fishing for top quality Championship talent, a strategy that could pay off for a club still seen as relative minnows in the top flight.

They have, however, shown that they can be successful in attracting players from Europe, with Justin Kluivert arriving from Italy, alongside major deals from Serie A and Ligue 1 for Hamed Traore and Romain Faivre respectively.

Traore, of course, spent the second half of last season on loan at the club.

Worries surrounding Bournemouth were fixed on claims that last season’s survival would then be followed up by a collapse back down to the Championship.

But, with the transfer business they’ve managed, they could be dark horses again.

Brentford – C

Ivan Toney’s absence hasn’t necessarily negatively impacted Brentford’s start to the season, with Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa filling in with the goals needed.

Still, Brentford’s transfer window has been underwhelming despite the positives emerging, with a lack of new recruits joining the club.

It’s been understated business with Nathan Collins joining from Wolves, alongside a pair of moves from the Bundesliga in Kevin Schade and Mark Flekken.

Goalkeeper Flekken was a shrewd buy to soften the blow of David Raya joining Arsenal, while Schade’s goal against Crystal Palace shows that Brentford have a raw, emerging talent on their hands.

Yet, it’s not headline-grabbing. It’s more middle-of-the-road for the West Londoners.

Brighton – A+

The Seagulls have arguably won this transfer window, even after waving goodbye to star midfielders Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister.

Flying high early into the brand new Premier League campaign, the signings made this summer should see Brighton continue to take the top flight by storm.

Joao Pedro joined from Watford with some critiquing his attitude, but he’s started life in Brighton’s blue and white effortlessly and seems an ideal fit under Roberto de Zerbi.

Scoring against Luton on the opening day, he’s one to watch out for.

Likewise, moves for Mahmoud Dahoud and James Milner give Brighton more midfield options, as does Igor defensively.

The statement loan signing of Ansu Fati from Barcelona has sent shockwaves through the Premier League.

The once League One club are now attracting a player that was at one time dubbed the heir to Lionel Messi’s throne at the Nou Camp.

Burnley – B

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley came into the Premier League off a barnstorming promotion from the Championship, with the days of Sean Dyche’s pragmatic football now resigned to history.

They have recruited well for the step-up in certain areas, even stealing players from fellow promoted outfits.

Sander Berge has joined the Clarets from Sheffield United; a coup given the Norwegian international and central midfielder was previously on Liverpool’s radar.

They’ve also managed to sign Jordan Beyer permanently. The centre back impressed in the Championship last season while on loan, before returning for good.

The worry is that Burnley have splashed significant amounts of money on some unknown entities when it comes to the Premier League.

One example is goalkeeper James Trafford signing from Manchester City after only ever featuring in League One in senior football.

It’s a risky and bold strategy from the Clarets, but one that could pay off.

Chelsea – B

It’s fair to say Chelsea have been rampant in the market once again, with Stamford Bridge boasting a busy revolving door as Mauricio Pochettino retooled his side.

Todd Boehly has bankrolled some major signings, the pick of the bunch being Moises Caicedo finally arriving in London for a British record £115million fee.

Christopher Nkunku also arrived onto the scene for £53m from RB Leipzig before suffering a major injury.

Romeo Lavia, Nicolas Jackson and most recently Cole Palmer have all joined too, with eye-watering amounts of money spent in the blink of an eye from Boehly.

Pochettino’s men have started this season inconsistently, though he will hope that this new pool of exciting and expensive talent combines effectively to propel the Blues to a better position this time around.

Crystal Palace – C-

Roy Hodgson’s Eagles haven’t had the most exciting transfer window.

The major news involved Wilfried Zaha departing Palace for Galatasaray and Michael Olise staying put after Chelsea looked to trigger his release clause.

Zaha is a big loss for Hodgson’s men, a loss that arguably hasn’t been filled.

Palace have added a few players such as Matheus Franca, Dean Henderson and Jefferson Lerma, the last of these deals a shrewd buy with the former Bournemouth midfielder joining on a free transfer earlier this summer.

Henderson does also give the Eagles another goalkeeping option to go with Sam Johnstone and is a positive transfer to draw a line under the Vicente Guaita saga.

But there are still gaps in Palace’s ranks that haven’t been adequately bolstered in a transfer window that could be characterised as underwhelming.

Everton – C+

Everton’s transfer window has been saved by recent transfer deals. Signing Beto from Udinese means they now have the striker they’ve been crying out for.

Beto scored on his debut against Doncaster Rovers recently when brought on in the Carabao Cup and he looks destined to please supporters.

Unfortunately, other bits of business have seen Everton opt for safer signings, with the arrival of Beto a stark contrast to the shoestring budget displayed elsewhere.

Ashley Young, who is now 38, isn’t a signing that screams glamour, even on a free.

Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison, both on loan deals, saw Everton go for cheap deals to bolster their wide areas.

Danjuma’s deal in particular feels like the Toffees haven’t explored much in recruiting new players, after the Dutchman turned them down last season to join Tottenham on loan instead.

Fulham – D

Fulham have lost significant players this transfer window, with serial goalscorer Aleksandar Mitrovic the high profile departure for Saudi Arabia.

The Cottagers did sign Raul Jimenez from Wolves to add a striker but it’s a deal that could be considered underwhelming, especially with Marco Silva’s side managing to acquire the Mexican on the cheap.

Calvin Bassey and Timothy Castagne do add defensive options for the West Londoners. However, Bassey was sent off in one of his first encounters for his new side during their draw at Arsenal.

Keeping Joao Palhinha from leaving on Deadline Day to Bayern Munich is a positive, though.

Nonetheless, the bubble could well burst at Fulham this campaign after they performed so well last season to finish comfortably mid-table.

Liverpool – B-

Liverpool’s transfer window has seen multiple players pass Jurgen Klopp’s Reds by, Caicedo the most publicised transfer that never materialised.

Still, Liverpool have bounced back and recruited well.

Dominik Szoboszlai has impressed since arriving from RB Leipzig, as has his midfield partner Alexis Mac Allister, who joined from Brighton earlier this summer.

Liverpool might not have had Wataru Endo at the top of their shopping list coming into the summer window but he came into the fold at Anfield well-liked from his time at Stuttgart and showed his new club will remain frugal in the face of big money being brandished elsewhere by rivals.

Ryan Gravenberch has also joined from Ajax, a stylish addition.

Mohamed Salah stayed despite fierce interest from Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, and that has to be viewed as a positive after turning down a £150m offer.

Luton Town – B

The Hatters have begun their adventure in the Premier League with a bump, but their recruitment has been admirable in the face of adversity.

They’ve purchased players that have starred in the Football League, gems that might well flourish at the top of the pyramid given time.

Jacob Brown from Stoke City has impressed early on at Luton, and he is a striker who will put in a shift for this unfancied side.

Likewise, Ryan Giles, Tahith Chong and Mads Andersen have performed elsewhere in England, albeit never to the standards expected of them now in the top-flight.

Ross Barkley is an intriguing signing, the attacking midfielder once heralded as a star at Everton now a rogue free transfer deal for the Premier League new boys.

It will be fascinating to see whether or not these new faces can perform above expectation for Rob Edwards’ men to help them have any chance of survival.

Manchester City – A

Pep Guardiola and the powers that be at Manchester City are always methodical when it comes to their transfer business and know exactly who they want.

Losing Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte and Cole Palmer will sting, but City have gone out into the market and purchased excellent replacements.

Josko Gvardiol joins as one of the best centre-backs in world football, while Mateo Kovacic has looked head and shoulders above his Chelsea days already.

Matheus Nunes is also in the building now, causing a fuss at Wolves by striking from training to force through a move to Guardiola’s title-chasers, while winger Jeremy Doku is being tipped to terrorise full-backs after his move.

Manchester United – C

Manchester United’s business will certainly divide the club’s expectant fanbase.

New No 1 Andre Onana hasn’t quite stepped up to the mark just yet since joining from Inter Milan, though his backline have looked shaky during the early stages of the season.

Rasmus Hojlund has immense pressure on his shoulders to score goals for Erik ten Hag’s men after the Danish youngster moved to Manchester with a £72m price tag on his head despite only scoring nine goals for Atalanta last season.

Mason Mount also joined after a mixed time with Chelsea, although if they can unlock his best form this deal could prove to be a worthwhile one. He is, however, currently injured.

Sofyan Amrabat also joined from Fiorentina on deadline day, ending a lengthy saga, and he will be expected to hit the ground running in shoring up United’s midfield.

Newcastle United – A

Newcastle, despite having a bottomless pit of money, spent wisely to strengthen after delivering Champions League football last season.

Sandro Tonali’s debut against Aston Villa showed everyone why the Magpies swooped for him – the midfielder scoring on his debut and impressing.

Harvey Barnes has also stood out during his early appearances with his new club capitalising on Leicester’s fall to the Championship to sign the winger.

Newcastle have also invested for the future in the signing of boyhood fan Lewis Hall. Many Chelsea supporters were surprised and disappointed to see the academy star leave.

Bodies out the door will also please Magpies fans. Space was freed up after the dead wood departures of Chris Wood, Karl Darlow and Ryan Fraser.

Nottingham Forest – B-

Nottingham Forest’s summer transfer business, compared to last year’s manic window, was always going to be subdued this time around.

Steve Cooper’s team have gone about their dealings quietly, signing a number of players from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Anthony Elanga moved to the City Ground after failing to break into the Red Devils’ first team on a consistent basis, while right back Nuno Tavares joined on loan after fleeting moments of excellence in an Arsenal shirt.

It remains to be seen whether these players can make an impression.

Gonzalo Montiel may be the pick of the bunch from the new personnel, the 26-year-old an experienced centre-back in LaLiga for Sevilla prior to this move. He joins on loan to give the likes of Joe Worrall competition.

However, Ibrahim Sangare has also joined from PSV, with Divock Origi arriving on loan from AC Milan.

Similarly to Newcastle, Forest have also managed to offload fringe players that had fallen down the pecking order such as Steve Cook and Jack Colback.

Nottingham Forest recruited Divock Origi, formerly of Liverpool, on loan from AC Milan

Sheffield United – D+

Sheffield United, going into the new Premier League season, lost both of their prized assets.

Iliman N’Diaye was tipped for a breakout campaign, the attacker – who only a matter of seasons ago was playing in non-league – electric in the Championship.

That was until Ligue 1 giants Marseille came calling, with the 23-year-old packing his bags and leaving on the eve of the top-flight season.

To make matters worse, Sander Berge also left Bramall Lane for Burnley.

But new recruits have softened the blow of both these players exiting, Gustavo Hamer in particular endearing himself to the Blades faithful with a debut goal.

Cameron Archer is the new star striker on the block for Paul Heckingbottom’s side, though the pressure is on him to succeed in a demanding league.

James McAtee back on loan on deadline day was a shrewd signing, with potential relegation rivals Wolves beaten to the chase.

Gustavo Hamer was prised away from Coventry, with Sheffield United winning the race

Tottenham – B

With a new manager at the helm and Harry Kane gone, Tottenham fans have had to endure lots of change in a short period of time.

The influx of players in at Spurs hasn’t helped that, either.

James Maddison has excelled early on in his new surroundings, the attacking midfielder scoring his first goal for Tottenham against Bournemouth last time out.

He’s also assisted two goals, helping his team draw 2-2 at Brentford in their opener.

A revelation so far during this new dawn has been young full back Destiny Udogie, a standout player for Spurs after originally signing back in the summer of 2022.

Loaned out to Udinese, his presence back in the fold at Spurs this campaign makes him feel like fresh blood.

The future’s looking bright for Postecoglou’s new-look Spurs, even in the wake of Kane’s £100m departure to Bayern Munich, with Brennan Johnson snapped up, too.

West Ham United – C

David Moyes’ Hammers are performing superbly so far in the Premier League.

This is despite an uneventful transfer window at the London Stadium, James Ward-Prowse the marquee signing in the centre of the park from relegated Southampton.

Mohammed Kudus also looks like a talent coming in from Ajax, with the Hammers pleased to get that deal over the line owing to interest from other potential suitors.

They will be somewhat disappointed by Harry Maguire not leaving Manchester United, the proposed deal having been on before eventually collapsing.

Still, West Ham will hope that a few major additions will be enough to succeed.

Mohammed Kudus left Ajax to join West Ham and made his debut in the victory over Luton

Mohammed Kudus left Ajax to join West Ham and made his debut in the victory over Luton

Wolves – D-

Gary O’Neil’s men are the last team to be ranked and they receive the most scathing verdict.

Wolves’ transfer outgoings make for grim reading. Indeed, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Ryan Giles and more have all left Molineux behind.

Managing to steer Bournemouth to survival against all odds, rookie O’Neil has been drafted in to hopefully do the same for a threadbare Wolves team.

Players have joined to try and plug glaring gaps, but it feels like a losing battle.

Wolves opted to bring back Matt Doherty on a free transfer and secure a cheap deal for Tom King from Northampton. It smacks of desperation.

Supporters will hope, perhaps in vain, that players such as Tommy Doyle and Santiago Bueno can lead their side to survival and perform above expectation.

SAMI MOKBEL: LaLiga interest in Greenwood

After revealing earlier that there is interest from Serie A in Mason Greenwood, Mail Sport understands there is also loan interest in the forward from Spain.

Getafe, currently 11th in La Liga, are interested in a deal for the 21-year-old.

We previously reported how sources indicated to Mail Sport that Lazio are among the clubs looking at that situation, with talks over a possible move to Italy for the Manchester United striker taking place this morning.

Significantly, it is understood there’s reservations at Lazio about the deal. This one is in the balance.

ROB DRAPER: Hudson-Odoi’s move to Forest set to be confirmed

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s move to Nottingham Forest will be announced in next few hours.

The final details are being sorted but everything is agreed. This represents a fresh start for the 22 year old who made his England debut at 18 becoming the youngest ever player to make a debut in a competitive game.

He struggled in recent years to make progress following his Achilles injury. That said, he’s been a starter at Chelsea in the World Club Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Ultimately, the lure of Steve Cooper, his England Under 17 coach, was decisive. Cooper believes he can get Hudson-Odoi back to his best and the player believes Cooper is the best coach to do that.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to complete a deadline day permanent move to Nottingham Forest

PSG ‘reach agreement for Kolo Muani’

Reports in France claim PSG have reached a €90m (£77m) agreement to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Parisiens have been chasing the French forward all summer, with Kolo Muani skipping training this week in order to force through a move.

After making his name with Nantes, Kolo Muani has been a key player for Frankfurt in recent years and impressed at the World Cup with France last year, scoring in the semi-final against Morroc, although he did miss a guilt-edged chance in the final.

12:05

Arsenal are contemplating terminating the contract of Nicolas Pepe as the winger continues to struggle to find a move away from the club before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Pepe, who was signed for £72million from Lille in 2019, spent last season on loan at Nice in Ligue 1 after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta.

He started just five Premier League games in his last season at the Emirates Stadium, with Arteta more than happy to let him leave.

JACK GAUGHAN: Burnley agree move for Genk star Tresor

Genk winger Mike Tresor is in the country to complete a medical with Burnley ahead of a loan move.

It’s one that has been ongoing for weeks but set to come to a conclusion today and the Clarets will have the option to buy the 24-year-old at the end of the season.

Tresor has nine goals and 33 assists for Genk over the last two seasons and will become the fifth Belgian in Vincent Kompany’s squad.

Kompany still wants a striker – with links to Divock Origi – and a central midfielder before the window closes.

Genk’s Belgian midfielder Mike Tresor is preparing to join Burnley on loan, with an option to buy

11:47

SIMON JONES: Sangare deal to Forest in place

Nottingham Forest have a £30m plus deal in place with PSV Eindhoven for midfielder Ibrahim Sangare once Brennan Johnson’s move to Tottenham is agreed.

Personal terms not expected to pose a problem – it will then fall to the player to decide whether he wants to give up Champions League football to join Forest.

Sangare has been linked with several top flight clubs in recent transfer windows and it looks as if he was finally get his move.

SIMON JONES: Iwobi in for Fulham medical

Alex Iwobi is having his Fulham medical ahead of £20m plus add-ons move from Everton.

Marco Silva has been desperate to add signings in the final few days of the window with the club having lost star man Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, while Joao Palhinha, Harrison Reed and Tosin Adarabioyo could also depart.

All four played important roles during the Cottagers’ impressive 10th-placed finish last season.

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool have not received an offer from Saudi Arabia over the signing of Mo Salah and claims their position on the subject ‘remains the same’.

Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad are said to be willing to pay over £120million to land the Egyptian international this summer.

The latest offer trumps the £118m fee that the Middle Eastern mega-spenders had been readying as they try to convince the Reds to sell.

West Brom facing battle to keep Thomas-Asante

The financial problems at West Brom have been seen on various occasions this summer with important first teamers such as Dara O’Shea sold in order to keep the club’s finances ticking over.

Forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has attracted interest from fellow Championship clubs – including Stoke – but as of yet no bid has met the Baggies’ asking price.

The 24-year-old was the club’s top goalscorer with nine goals last season after making the step up from Salford City in League Two.

11:20

TOM COLLOMOSSE: Leicester win the race for Cannon

Leicester have moved for Everton forward Tom Cannon in a deal likely to be worth up to £7million if it goes through – and that means a striker is likely to leave on deadline day.

Until now the Foxes have stuck firmly to their asking price of about £20million for Kelechi Iheanacho, which has deterred Crystal Palace and Wolves.

Patson Daka, meanwhile, is a loan target for AC Milan, while Jamie Vardy also remains at the club. Daka the likeliest of the trio to depart today.

Cannon had offers from Norwich City and Preston North End while Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday had wanted him on loan.

Leicester are preparing to complete the signing of Tom Cannon after fighting off interest from several clubs

11:12

TOM COLLOMOSSE: Johnson to travel to London

Brennan Johnson was preparing to travel to London on Friday morning for a Tottenham medical in anticipation of a £45million transfer from Nottingham Forest.

Forest have been ready to sell Johnson since the end of last season and had knocked back two bids from Brentford for their homegrown star, plus an initial enquiry from Tottenham on Thursday.

If Johnson’s move proceeds as expected, Forest will set their sights on PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

Fee and personal terms not expected to pose a problem – it will then fall to the player to decide whether he wants to give up Champions League football to join Forest.

Brennan Johnson is edging closer to joining Tottenham for a £45m fee

11:10

Former Everton and Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is back in football, penning a one-year deal at his new club.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since being released by the Toffees at the end of the 2021-22 season following the expiration of his contract.

Sigurdsson’s last competitive game came during a 5-0 loss to Man City on the final day of the 2020-21 season.

11:09

Tottenham have made contact with Chelsea over a potential deal for midfielder Conor Gallagher.

As Mail Sport reported yesterday, the England international is weighing up his future after Chelsea brought in Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia for their midfield.

Gallagher captained Chelsea against AFC Wimbledon and would prefer to stay if he continues to get regular game time but is realistic about his opportunities.

Tottenham need to offload players first before they are likely to bid and their immediate focus is on signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest amid competition from Brentford.

However, Pierre Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele are likely to depart today. Spurs have a bid from Fulham on the table for Hojbjerg plus loan offers from Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray. Ndombele has interest from Inter Milan.

Chelsea pass £1bn spend under Boehly

The Blues confirmed the £42.5m signing of Man City starlet Cole Palmer on a seven-year deal this morning, with the option of an extra 12 months.

Chelsea will pay an initial £40m with the remainder of the package for the 21 year-old made up of add-ons.

The deal takes Chelsea’s spending since Todd Boehly took over the club last year to £1bn in what has been a remarkably aggressive recruitment policy.

We are yet to see the results on the pitch, with the west London side winning just 12 of their 41 games during the US businessman’s tenure.

However, there have been some positive signs during the early days of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at the club.

Chelsea’s £42.5m signing of Cole Palmer has taken their spending under Todd Boehly pass the £1bn mark.

Tuchel confirms Gravenberch will join Liverpool

SIMON JONES: United chief flies out to negotiate Amrabat move

Fiorentina would prefer to reach agreement on a sale for Sofyan Amrabat as Manchester United continue negotiations.

The Morocco international is valued around £25m-£30m and United are looking to agree a loan with obligation for the 27-year-old who has one year left on contract.

The Italians, however, know that United have room for manoeuvre within financial fair play after bringing in £20m from Crystal Palace for Dean Henderson yesterday.

They want a fee agreed now with Amrabat a free agent next summer. United’s Matt Hargreaves has flown over to Italy to conduct negotiations.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s 19-year-old defender Marc Jurado has completed a permanent move to Espanyol with a sell-on clause. Jurado had joined United from Espanyol’s rivals Barcelona three years ago but also had interest from Real Betis last week.

Manchester United are still yet to agree a deal for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat

JACK GAUGHAN: Two new signings likely at United

There is plenty going on around Man United today.

Two new faces look likely. Discussions are ongoing with Fiorentina for Sofyan Amrabat, while they are working on completing a loan deal for Sergio Reguilon from Spurs.

As Sami Mokbel reported earlier, Lazio are interested in Mason Greenwood.

Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly could also leave today. Scott McTominay is expected to remain at Old Trafford alongside Harry Maguire amid interest from elsewhere.

10:49

Wolves SLAM Nunes after Man City move

There have been some interesting comments from Wolves’ sporting director Matt Hobbs after Matheus Nunes’ £53m move to Man City was confirmed.

Nunes went on strike to force through a transfer to the Treble-winners, with his last appearance for Gary O’Neil’s side seeing him get sent off for ill-discipline during a 4-1 defeat to Brighton.

Hobbs said: ‘I was disappointed with how it ended, it wasn’t necessary the stance Matheus took, but we ended with a good resolution for everyone.

‘Matheus is a hugely talented player but would admit that last season he didn’t hit the heights he expected, but it was a tough season for the team, so maybe he wasn’t allowed to do that.

‘We’ve lost a player with a lot of potential, a lot of ability, but the situation has led to us bringing a greater number of players in to improve the squad and provide competition in the group.

‘The players here want competition in training, so while we’ve lost a good player, it’s made us a more competitive and better squad overall.’

Wolves have hit out at Matheus Nunes after he completed a £53m move to Man City

SIMON JONES: McAtee decides on Blades return

Man City midfielder James McAtee has chosen a return to Sheffield United on loan.

The 20-year-old had Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Feyenoord all offering to take him on loan but after the season he had helping the Blades earn promotion he felt an emotional pull back to Bramall Lane

McAtee found it difficult to turn to down former City coach Enzo Maresca in particular especially with the size of the club and style of Leicester’s play but the lure of playing in the Premier League regularly under Paul Heckingbottom, a manger he knows well, has proved too great to resist.

10:42

JACK GAUGHAN: Lots going on at Man City

It’s a busy day at Manchester City, who have announced the £53million deal for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

It’s mostly outgoings this morning though, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle sorting loans moves away to Southampton and Wolves respectively. Both of those academy products will have played their last games for the club, with purchase clauses in the deals.

Cole Palmer has gone to Chelsea, while James McAtee is also closing on a loan return to Sheffield United.

All four of those players were seen as potential first-team players at one stage.

It has been a busy morning at Manchester City, with several young players heading out of the door

Spurs make progress on Brennan Johnson move

Positive signs for Tottenham as they look to make their first signing of deadline day.

It promises go right down to the wire in north London.

10:30

Man City confirm £53m signing of Matheus Nunes

Matheus Nunes has promised to inject more energy into Manchester City’s midfield after sealing a £53million switch from Wolves.

The Portugal international went on strike earlier this week in a bid to force through a move to the Treble winners, angering Wolves boss Gary O’Neil.

City were willing to walk away from the deal as the two clubs haggled over a fee but secured Nunes before the transfer deadline – and in time to name him in Saturday’s squad to face Fulham.

The 25-year-old will have to wait to meet Pep Guardiola, who remains in Barcelona recovering from back surgery.

An update on Brennan Johnson from our Midlands reporter TOM COLLOMOSSE

The key thing to remember with Brennan Johnson is this: Forest are more than open to a sale.

Like every club, they must take account of FFP and whatever they receive for Johnson represents pure profit.

Personal terms are not expected to cause an issue and though it may go to the wire, there was cautious optimism on Friday morning that Johnson would end up a Spurs player when the window closed.

Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez has admirers at Forest and Spurs are willing sellers, but as yet the Colombian has shown little interest in moving to the City Ground.

This is a problem for Spurs: plenty of players they are willing to move, but those players are not so easy to shift.

Brennan Johnson’s potential move to Tottenham is expected to go down to the wire

10:14

SIMON JONES: Coutinho likely to head for the Middle East

Qatari club Al-Duhail are confident of completing the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Aston Villa, despite the Brazilian having interest from Besiktas and Real Betis.

The attacking midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park, despite being one of the club’s top earners.

Villa also added Nicolo Zaniolo in this window which is expected to impact Coutinho’s gametime even more.

His last start for Unai Emery’s side came in their 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in February.

Bayern ‘agree £55m fee for Palhinha’

Bayern Munich have reportedly agreed a £55million fee with Fulham to sign Joao Palhinha.

Fulham rejected Bavarian giants’ initial offer of £47m for the Portuguese midfielder earlier this week but negotiations between the two clubs continued.

The 28-year-old is said to be determined to secure a move to join Thomas Tuchel’s side and has flown to Munich in anticipation of the move being completed before Friday’s deadline.

DONE DEAL: Nuno Tavarez JOINS Forest

Nuno Tavares has joined Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan from Arsenal, with an option to buy.

The left-back spent the 2022-23 campaign with Marseille in France after falling out of favour with the Gunners.

Forest have been desperate to strengthen on the left-side of defence with Harry Toffolo recently charged with alleged betting breaches and Omar Richards on loan with Olympiacos.

Tavares is expected to be one of a number of arrivals at the City Ground on Friday, with Bologna midfielder Nicolas Dominguez and Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is another expected to arrive should Brennan Johnson join Tottenham as expected.

The big one to watch is PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare. Forest have followed him all summer for the defensive midfield role and if they can do a deal, it is likely to break their transfer record.

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares

09:55

TOM COLLOMOSSE: Adams to Wolves still ongoing

Wolves remain in talks with Southampton over a deal for striker Che Adams, who the Championship club will allow to leave under the right circumstances.

Mail Sport revealed on Thursday that Adams was high on Wolves’ list after they decided Leicester’s £20million asking price for Kelechi Iheanacho was too high.

Adams has only one year left on his contract and is keen to return to the Premier League following Saints’ relegation last term.

Meanwhile, Wolves are desperate to find a taker for forward Daniel Podence, who has interested from clubs in Qatar.

Wolves remain keen to bring in Southampton striker Che Adams before tonight’s deadline

09:44

SIMON JONES: United youngster set to join League One high-flyers

Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill is set to join Stevenage on loan for the season.

McNeill, 19, spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Newport County, scoring twice in 20 appearances.

He made his senior United debut last September, in the Europa League defeat by Real Sociedad.

The striker is currently undergoing a medical ahead of his move to the Lamex Stadium where he will link-up with Steve Evans’ side.

Boro have begun their campaign positively and currently sit fifth, which comes following promotion from League Two last season.

Evans has a good record for developing young strikers, with the Scot having played a key role in improving the likes of Ivan Toney and Chris Wood during their formative years.

SAMI MOKBEL: Brennan Johnson to Spurs to go down to the wire

Tottenham have communicated to Nottingham Forest that they want to lock in a couple of outgoings before submitting an improved offer for Brennan Johnson, who is still attracting interest from Brentford and one other Premier League club.

Spurs have already made one offer of around £40m that has been turned down by Forest.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are leaving it late for Johnson, with this one expected to run close to the deadline.

Manchester United are focusing on the transfer of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

The clubs are discussing a loan with obligation to buy the Morocco international who has been training away from the first team group while his future is resolved.

Man United make second deadline day signing

Manchester United have signed Tottenham full back Sergio Reguilon on loan as cover for the injured Luke Shaw.

United went into the market for a left-sided defender after injuries to Shaw and Tyrell Malacia left Erik ten Hag short in the position. Mail Sport revealed on Thursday that the England international would be out for 10 weeks.

The club had initially targeted a move for Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella but talks stalled after he featured for the Blues in their Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Southampton confirm Harwood-Bellis loan

England Under-21 captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis has completed a loan move to Southampton.

The Manchester City academy graduate made eight appearances in cup competitions under Pep Guardiola but has largely spent the last two years out on loan.

There is an obligation to buy clause, worth around £20million, in the loan if Saints win promotion back to the Premier League following relegation in May.

Harwood-Bellis was due to be out of contract at the Etihad Stadium next summer but has extended his contract by 12 months, which offers City flexibility on a transfer fee if Southampton don’t go up.

Nottingham Forest and Fulham had been keen on the 21-year-old after his performances for Burnley as they won the Championship title last year.

SIMON JONES provides an update on some other ongoing deals

Burnley, Forest and Fulham are looking at a late deal for AC Milan’s Divock Origi.

Everton have offers of over £6m from Norwich, Leicester and Preston for striker Tom Cannon.

Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi is attracting interest from the likes of Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Fulham

ISAAN KHAN: Arsenal focused on outgoings

Arsenal are believed to not be expecting any transfer incomings today. The club’s main focus is to now find moves for Nicolas Pepe, Rob Holding and Nuno Tavares.

Tavares’ loan move to Nottingham Forest is all but done, and expected to be announced in the coming hours.

The Gunners have been doing their upmost to find clubs for Holding and Pepe for months, though in the case of Holding it appears a deal could be struck before the window closes.

Wolves and Crystal Palace are said to be in a race to sign the defender.

Though Pepe remains a conundrum. Arsenal are desperate to get the winger off their books, and are now even contemplating terminating his contract if a move is not secured for him.

Arsenal are not expected to make any signings today, with Mikel Arteta keen on shifting on unwanted players

Could Conor Gallagher move to Tottenham?

Tottenham have reshaped their side nicely since Ange Postecoglou came in as manager and have the £100m received from Harry Kane’s sale to spend.

Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher has duly moved onto their radar in the final two days of the window. No formal approach has been made as yet but Gallagher is aware of their interest.

Any deal will hinge on whether Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is loaned out to Atletico Madrid, creating a vacancy in their midfield.

Gallagher turned down a £38m offer from West Ham earlier in the window but his head may be turned by Spurs given that opportunities may be limited under Mauricio Pochettino.

A potential move of Conor Gallagher to Tottenham from Chelsea is one to keep an eye on on deadline day

SAMI MOKBEL: Greenwood attracting interest from Serie A

There is interest this morning from Serie A in Mason Greenwood.

A reminder of the key timings today

We’re all set for a dramatic day ahead, with plenty of Premier League and Football League clubs looking to put the final touches to their squads.

The deadline is open until 11PM tonight, but for teams to have their new signings available to play this weekend, they must be signed and registered before midday.

Unfortunately, this means that Luton and West Ham – who take on each other at Kenilworth Road tonight – will not have the opportunity to play any signings that are yet to be announced.

We’ll be bringing you all the major updates and deals as they happen throughout the day.

ADRIAN KAJUMBA: Palace eye-up Holding before deadline

Crystal Palace are emerging as the leading contenders to land Arsenal defender Rob Holding before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Centre-back Holding has been among the players Arsenal have been open to offers for in this window.

He has been subject of interest from clubs in England, Italy and Spain this summer but the Selhurst Park club are increasingly hopeful of strengthening their defensive options by securing the 27 year-old.

Holding has been at Arsenal since 2016 and made over 150 appearances for the club.

SAMI MOKBEL: Palhinha’s move to Bayern edging closer

Bayern Munich’s protracted move for Fulham Joao Palhinha made ‘good’ progress overnight.

The clubs ‘weren’t close’ to an agreement as of Thursday afternoon but there is now a feeling that an agreement can be reached.

Fulham are looking at replacements but given the Portuguese midfielder made the most tackles in the Premier League last season, his departure would be a huge blow.

07:16

ADRIAN KAJUMBA: Chelsea’s plans for Deadline Day…

With Cole Palmer expected to be final major addition for Chelsea focus will be on last few outgoings today. Couple of updates along those lines. Callum Hudson-Odoi is due to arrive in Nottingham this morning to finalise his permanent move from Chelsea.

Also, Ian Maatsen is another Chelsea player who has attracted interest this summer after impressing on loan for Burnley last season. He’s primarily been a left-back and there has been some conversation about whether he might be a late mover given the interest in him and now with Marc Cucurella set to stay.

However feeling is heading into the final day of the window – and was given a big percentage chance – that he will remain at Chelsea. Something else to consider is that Maatsen has also been deployed further forward under Mauricio Pochettino so that could be another factor lessening the link between his situation and Cucurella’s.

07:14

TOM COLLOMOSSE: Transfer updates from the Midlands…

Forest are expected to sell Brennan Johnson to Tottenham for around £45million. Meanwhile, Forest were looking to sign Davinson Sanchez, but, as of yesterday he didn’t want to leave.

Forest are also signing Nuno Tavares from Arsenal, Nicolas Dominguez from Bologna and will try for Ibrahim Sangare from PSV – which could be a potential club record deal.

Others will leave, possibly Boly and/or Kouyate depending on who comes in, although the market in the Middle East stays open for longer so not everything has to be done today.

Wolves are expecting to sign Che Adams on loan as we indicated yesterday. They’re desperate to shift Daniel Podence who may end up going to Qatar.

Villa will announce Clement Lenglet on loan this morning and sell Coutinho to Al-Duhail in Qatar. Youngster Jaden Philogene will join Hull.

They’re pretty well set but I think Emery wants to do one more, probably an attacking midfielder with Coutinho going out and Buendia injured long term.

One to watch: Sofyan Amrabat

There are plenty of deals to stay on top of but here is one man expected to be grabbing plenty of headlines today.

Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso has revealed that while Manchester United are pursuing, other clubs have entered the race for Amrabat.

Speaking after Fiorentina’s Europa Conference League win against Rapid Vienna, Commisso told Sky Italy: “There are other clubs for Amrabat too. I cannot give an answer right now, because not even I know what will happen tomorrow.

“We told Amrabat that if he has an opportunity to leave, then we’ll let him go. If this deal cannot be done, then he has two years left on his contract and will remain.

“There are many negotiations in progress. I don’t want to name names. So wait 24 hours and then you’ll know what happens.”

A late twist in the Kylian Mbappe saga?

It appeared as if that was that and Kylian Mbappe would stay at PSG to see out his contract this summer.

And yet comments made after Thursday’s Champions League draw, in which PSG were paired with Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Newcastle United, teased a potential late twist, a new deal perhaps?

“We have more than 24 hours. Kylian is a PSG player,’ chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi told reporters.

‘We have very good discussions with him, he is a magnificent player, as a person and as a professional. We spoke with the rest of his family.

‘There are more than 24 hours for the transfer window. We’re going to work, try to do something. If we can, why not. Otherwise, we’re ready, we’re good. An extension? I don’t want to talk about that.’

Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto is still a target for Everton despite the Toffees signing Jack Harrison on loan

Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto remains a target for Everton despite the club confirming the signing of Jack Harrison on a loan deal in the early hours of Monday morning.

Aston Villa tried to hijack Everton’s deal for Harrison before realising he would be out for a further five weeks with injury.

Everton do not have an option to buy the winger included in their deal.

The 26-year-old joined Leeds from Manchester City back in 2021, and while Harrison will likely miss the beginning of the season with an injury, he will be a useful addition for Everton, having scored scoring 21 goals in the past three seasons for Leeds.

While Everton already have several wide players, including Neal Maupay, Arnaut Danjuma, Dwight McNeil and Demarai Gray, Gnonto is still a target for the Toffees, who are looking to add to their options in attack.

It comes as Sean Dyche’s side suffered a 1-0 loss to Fulham on Saturday, squandering several chances to score during the match.

Gnonto, meanwhile, has been a long-standing target for the Blues with Everton having already had a £15m bid for the winger rejected back in July

Mail Sport also reported last week that Leeds could take disciplinary action against the 19-year-old after he tried to force through a move to the Merseyside club.

He refused to play in Leeds’ game against Birmingham City on Saturday and is facing a fine after not travelling with the squad.

Speaking on the situation, Daniel Farke threatened to bar wantaway players like the Italian forward, amid concerns that they could upset the mood in his squad.

Gnonto has already featured for Leeds this season, playing 82 minutes during their 2-2 draw against Cardiff last week but failed to get on the scoresheet in that match.

He joined Leeds in 2022 in a £3.8m deal and went on to score twice in 24 league appearances for the Yorkshire club.
