Brian Klaas has lived in the UK for 12 years – and has revealed what he thinks his adopted country’s strengths and ‘oddities’ are

I’m a statriotic Minnesotan but I’ve lived in the UK for 12 years and I’m going to become a dual citizen.

After living abroad for 12 years, I see America’s strengths and weaknesses more clearly, just as I see Britain’s strengths and weaknesses more clearly as an outsider.

Life here in Britain has its problems – the cost-of-living crisis and the general decline post-Brexit are real and serious – but here are some tremendous strengths – and endearing oddities, too.

STRENGTHS

There is interesting history everywhere. When I was a kid in Minnesota , we went on a field trip to one of the oldest grand houses in the state, which was built in 1891. Since moving to the UK, I’ve lived in a cottage that was built in the 16th century – 1578, to be precise. It had no closets. The floor was slanted. It was lovely.

Cities/towns are much more walkable than in the US and there are tens of thousands of miles of walking paths, fanning out in every direction. It really is extraordinary. Where I live, there are several long-distance paths where you can walk out of your door and continue on the same path for hundreds of miles. If baseball and apple pie are America’s national pastimes, having tea after a countryside walk on Sundays seems to be a fair nominee for one of Britain’s most cherished rituals.

Most villages are utterly charming. There are several bleak industrial towns and cities, but most British villages are picturesque, complete with at least one pub, a church (often a very old one), old terraced houses, and nice walking paths crisscrossing it, often near some body of water. (If there is no body of water nearby, you are, of course, welcome to swim in your own bin.)

Healthcare is a guaranteed right and it’s free at the point of service. The NHS has issues, but every experience I’ve had has been overwhelmingly positive.

British political humour is hilarious. (If you haven’t seen The Thick of It, watch it.) Whenever the prime minister is getting elected, they have to stand, flanked by crazy people and joke candidates, such Lord Buckethead and Count Binface.

There is virtually zero risk of getting shot. (It’s also a myth that stabbings are more frequent in the UK compared to the US; there are more stabbings per capita in America.)

There is tremendous social capital and people are, for the most part, friendly, polite, and terrified of social awkwardness. (The mathematical definition of a limit approaching, but never reaching, zero is the final morsel of cheese at a British dinner party, which subdivides endlessly, until it is approximately one micron long and one micron wide, at which point it will be thrown away.)

You can travel most places in Europe in an hour or two, often for under $100 if you plan ahead. (I once took a morning Eurostar train from London to Brussels – it takes around two hours – gave a lunchtime talk at the European Union, had some Belgian beer and a little walk around, then returned home by 5pm.)

Pubs are wonderful institutions. Enough said.

The London Tube [subway] is fantastic. It’s clean, safe, and reliable. Most of the time, it’s so reliable that waiting anything beyond two or three minutes for a train in central London is deemed an annoyance.

Most places, there are very few annoying bugs (Scotland’s midges are a notable exception). You can just leave your doors and windows open without screens.

Almost everywhere is dog-friendly: bars, restaurants, bookstores, you name it.

THE ODDITIES

To turn the light on in many bathrooms, you need not find a light switch, but a little string hanging from the ceiling, which you pull. Nobody knows why.

To get warm in the winter, many people – yes, even in the 21st century – boil water and pour it into a red rubber bag, sometimes with a furry cover over it if you’re extra fancy. These ‘hot water bottles’ are staples of British homes.

Tiny country lanes that would be considered sidewalks in America are supposed to accommodate two normal-sized cars going at speed in opposite directions, often flanked by unforgiving hedges. When you encounter another car, one of you will reverse, sometimes a great distance, often over tree roots, into a tiny little ‘passing place’. (Both drivers are obligated, by British social law, to wave. The punishment for failing to comply is deep personal angst for days that they might have thought you were rude, which, to many British people, is worse than death).

What an American would called a kids’ size popcorn at a movie theatre (sorry, ‘cinema’) would be the largest size available in Britain.

The word ‘quite’ is often used to reduce intensity in British English rather than enhance it. In America, ‘quite’ always means ‘very’, whereas in Britain ‘quite nice’ often means ‘sort of nice’ instead of ‘extremely nice’. (I learned this the hard way three years into my time in the UK, when complimenting someone. I was told I had been inadvertently rude.)

In Britain, ‘middle class’ refers to well-off professionals such as doctors and lawyers, not the middle of the economic bell curve, as in America.

You can learn much more about a person by their accent. Accents can change even in the span of a few dozen miles. (When I first moved to the UK, I once went cycling in Wales, encountered someone on the top of a big mountain climb, and couldn’t understand a word he said. I told him I didn’t speak Welsh. It turns out he was speaking English, albeit with a Welsh valley accent. I’m sure he still tells that story about the American idiot he once met.) There is even a special accent associated with Eton, a school for posh boys. Whereas when I talk, I sound like a generic suburban Midwesterner and could conceivably be from an area with a 1,000-1,500-mile radius.

You know you are at a high-fashion event when there is a man in a Little Red Riding Hood outfit, a woman with feather horns and people wearing ankle socks with shorts who are not toddlers.

You definitely know you are at a high-fashion event when those same people are not merely wearing an outfit, they are making a statement.

Like Nina Tiari from New York, who is wearing a jumper, tights and pink sequinned Miu Miu knickers that cost her £3,700. Surely you mean dollars, I murmur, trying to pretend it is perfectly normal to pay a four-figure sum in any currency for a pair of pants.

‘No, I mean your British pounds,’ she says. Nina is a dress designer who understands how it all works. ‘Value is relative. I’m not buying these knickers because I like them. I bought them to make a statement. I wanted Anna to notice me.’

Of course. Anna! Cue flash of lightning and ominous music.

Vogue World is the brainchild of Dame Anna Wintour, the formidable Vogue magazine supremo, who is here tonight in a severe silver trench. What statement is Anna trying to make in her coat of shining armour? That she is a Tin Man, perhaps, in need of a heart?

This would certainly play into her reputation as the most terrifying woman in fashion, an icy commander capable of orchestrating a major event like this, right down to the carb-free canapés, which is supposed to be about supporting the British arts but is really about marketing the Vogue brand.

Vogue World is a night of entertainment at the Theatre Royal in London’s Drury Lane, a fledgling red carpet event that Anna hopes will one day rival her infamous Met Ball in New York.

Little booklets handed to guests claim the evening is being held to ‘celebrate iconic British creatives from Shakespeare to Stormzy’.

So far so marvellous, even if I’m not sure William Shakespeare needs the publicity boost afforded by Princess Eugenie turning up in a squat whorl of turquoise satin or Sienna Miller’s baby bump bursting through her Schiaparelli puffball skirt like a peach bobbing in a punch bowl.

The object of the exercise, Vogue claim, is nothing less than securing ‘the future of the UK’s rich cultural scene’, with proceeds going towards ‘the National Theatre and Royal Opera House, and many more’.

Good for them, even if there is no mention of the fact the National Theatre already receives £16 million from the Government every year and the Royal Opera House is the beneficiary of an annual Arts Council Grant of £22 million.

More is needed of course, more is always needed, but Vogue gives the flighty, self-important impression it is somehow single-handedly saving the arts world from certain ruination.

There is certainly no mention of any support from the Conservative Government, only a statement in the programme from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, saying we must do ‘everything we can’ to ‘support the sector during the ongoing cost of living crisis’. Well, we could drop the Ulez scheme for a start, said no one at the event.

What I now understand about Vogue World is that it is not one world but many worlds, and most of those worlds are off-limits, behind a velvet rope, entry forbidden unless you happen to be Kate Moss or a Delevingne or the person who knows the person who assists the person who polishes the buckles on Anna’s party shoes.

We are not allowed into the tequila bar, onto the first-floor balcony, into the Cecil Beaton bar, or onto the official after-party at Mayfair club George. I’m not complaining. It is just how it is.

Guests who have paid around £500 for a ticket are told to take public transport and arrive two to three hours before the show begins. I’d like to witness the eruption that would ensue if they told Naomi Campbell to do the same thing. When we civilians arrive we are hurried down the red carpet (‘keep moving, keep moving’) and rushed into the upstairs reception rooms of the theatre, leaving the coast clear for the celebrities.

Upon arrival each guest is handed a rose. What is this for, I ask? ‘There is going to be a throwing moment inside,’ he says. I bet there is. Throwing up or throwing down, that is the question, as that up-and-coming playwright guy W. Shakespeare once almost wrote.

Upstairs in the Burberry Grand Salon, waiters are serving crab croquettes, radishes with butter, walnut and quince bites and trays of hard-boiled eggs topped with haddock cream — exactly all the things, I would venture, that you don’t want to eat at a party.

Sparkling wine is served generously while silent men walk through the crowds with lacquered trays piled with free Coach pashminas. Well, don’t mind if I do.

I talk to Susan Mutesi, a broadcaster from Australia who is wearing a giant cartwheel of orange net, a silver hoop across her boobs and a big smile. Susan, you look sensational, but how do you go to the loo? ‘I haven’t been yet. I don’t know if I dare,’ she says.

Choreographer Sean Bankhead is wearing a three-piece shantung Dolce & Gabbana suit that looks as if it has been carved onto his body. ‘No shirt, I thought I’d get my chest out tonight,’ he says.

Someone is wearing a captain’s cap, someone is wearing red tinfoil, someone is wearing a look that I have described in my notebook as ‘rasta virgin nun’.

Somehow, the nun, Susan and her cartwheel, Nina in her pants, Mrs Tinfoil and me all make our way into the theatre for the 45-minute show. Forty-five minutes! Is that it? Yet so much of it was pretentious nonsense many must have been glad it was so short.

It began with that old incorrigible Kate Moss being cheered for her interpretive dancing under a gauze curtain. It featured an utterly cringe Shakespearean (him again) duet between Stormzy and Sophie Okonedo. Worst of all was a comedy skit featuring Damian Lewis, Sienna, James Corden and others pretending to be theatre ushers and making jokes about the non-celebrities in the audience.

There were magical moments — the London Community Gospel Choir, the appearance of the original four supermodels from the 1990s, with Christy Turlington (always my favourite) looking as if she had not aged a second.

Yet by the time Dame Harriet Walter in a mad quiff came on to make a plea for all the actors and actresses taking to the stage across the country, my patience was exhausted. They needed more money? Well, they could always go and work in a shop.

The evening ended with singer Annie Lennox dancing around in a coat that spelled out God Save The World in rhinestones.

We don’t need God for that, darlings, we’ve got Vogue magazine.

‘Female killer lured beauty blogger lookalike to her death by offering her a free treatment… then stabbed her 50 times so she could fake her own murder and escape her strict Iraqi family’

  • Shahraban K. and boyfriend Sheqir K. are accused of choosing blogger Khadidja O. for death because of her striking resemblance to Shahraban
  • She was allegedly tracked down on social media and then stabbed 50 times

A woman in Germany accused of luring her beauty-blogger lookalike to her death did so by offering her a free skin treatment, it has been alleged.

Shahraban K. and boyfriend Sheqir K., both 24 – are accused of targeting blogger Khadidja O. because of her striking resemblance to Shahraban – sharing the same dark hair and complexion.

Shahraban K. is said to have tracked down her lookalike on social media and, along with her boyfriend, stabbed her 50 times in a bid fake her own death.

Prosecutors said the couple aimed many of the slashes and stab wounds at Khadidja O’s face, apparently to make it easier to fool a investigation.

A court in Ingolstadt, Bavaria State, heard how they believed they could pass off their victim’s body as Shahraban K. so she could escape her strict Iraqi family.

Prosecutors say the killer couple had been contacting random girls on social media who looked enough like Shahraban K. to convince a coroner.

‘We have determined that the female suspect had decided to go into hiding due to family-internal arguments,’ state prosecutor Veronika Grieser told local media on Thursday. ‘She wanted to fake her own death and start a new life.’

On August 9 last year, the killers sent their victim a message via social media offering her the opportunity to be in a video for German rapper Lune.

The pair – who named their fake account ‘lunee.officiel’ – told her: ‘You don’t have to do much. Would be great to hear from you. Would take place in Offenburg.’

And they added: ‘Must be kept a secret though until the song is released.’

But Khadidja grew suspicious and sent a message to the star’s official account. Lune replied saying: ‘It’s fake, sis. Don’t reply!’

Just two days later, the defendants used another Instagram account to get in touch.

Prosecutor Grieser said: ‘This time, they offered a beauty treatment which would come free of charge if their victim advertised it on social media.’

They agreed to meet in Eppingen, the victim’s hometown, according to Grieser, where the killers picked Khadidja up in a Mercedes.

‘They drove towards Ingolstadt but asked the 23-year-old to get out of the car in a forest’ she said. ‘She was hit on the head at least once and then stabbed 56 times.’

Police spokesman Andreas Aichele explained: ‘Her face was seriously injured with the more than 50 knife stabs.’

The killers put their victim’s body back into the car and abandoned the vehicle just a few blocks from where Shahraban K. lived in Ingolstadt.

Her horrified parents discovered the victim’s body in the Mercedes later that day and assumed it was their daughter.

German police officers had initially identified the body, located in the parked Mercedes, as Shahraban K – as the alleged killers had planned.

But suspicions about the body’s identity arose following an autopsy, and the victim has since been identified Khadidja.

Shahraban and Sheqir were tracked down and arrested after forensic examinations and a check of the victim’s tattoos revealed her true identity.

Prosecutors – who plan to question 190 witnesses in court – charged the duo with murder following extensive DNA checks and the investigation of social media and mobile phone records.

The pair are being held in custody and their full trial is expected to start shortly.

Neither of them have ever made a statement or commented on the accusations.

Texas A&M goalkeeper Kenna Caldwell scores incredible 45-yard free kick in the Aggies first victory of the season… and she didn’t even realise!

  • The fifth-year senior recorded the first official goal of her college career
  • Her freekick glided over the opposing goalkeeper and into the top left corner
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Texas A&M Aggies goalkeeper Kenna Caldwell scored an incredible free kick from near halfway to put her side on course for victory over Tulsa.

Caldwell lined up to take the set piece from 45 yards out, just to the right of the center circle, in the 52nd minute. She lifted it towards the penalty area, only to watch the ball beat everyone including her opposite number.

It sailed over the outstretched reach of the opposing keeper and into the upper left corner of the net.

‘I didn’t even notice. I started high-tailing it back to the goal and (a teammate) turned to me said: “Look!”,’ Caldwell revealed afterwards.

‘I looked up and the ball was already in the back of the net so I had to watch the replay.’

The goalkeeper claimed to have scored plenty of similar goals in training – ‘just for fun’ – and she insists she wasn’t trying to find a teammate.

‘Usually I do try to bend it in for a serve but this time I felt like it was right in my range,’ Caldwell added. ‘So yes I was trying to hit the back of the net but the main thing I was thinking was: “Don’t hit it out of bounds…” and it went in.’

A&M was not done scoring either as only five minutes after Caldwell’s remarkable strike, midfielder Carissa Boeckmann was able to score a second goal and put the Aggies up 2-0.

Caldwell, who is a fifth-year senior from Lone Tree, Colorado, recorded the first goal of her career with the strike after putting four shots on target last season.

The free kick was the first shot she registered this year through the first four games of the season.

The goalkeeper is mobbed by her teammates after the incredible strike for the Aggies

Throughout her career at Texas A&M she has started 56 of the 59 games she has played in and has a .728 save percentage.

The victory against Tulsa marked the first win for the Aggies this season after they suffered losses to Florida State and Washington State, while also drawing against Baylor.

This season’s slow start through four games marks a far cry from the way the Aggies kicked off last season when they recorded three wins and a draw in their first four games.

Two of those three wins saw the Aggies score eight goals and six goals respectively.

Lili Reinhart and boyfriend Jack Martin touched down at Venice’s Marco Polo Airport for the city’s Film Festival on Thursday.

The American actress, 26, cut a casual figure after her long flight in a white vest which she teamed with boot cut jeans.

Make-up free Lili donned a black baseball cap and toted her essentials in a rucksack to which she tied a Christian Dior scarf.

Meanwhile TikToker Jack, 26, who confirmed his relationship with the Riversdale star earlier this month, donned a floral shirt which he teamed with skinny jeans.

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world, with its 80th edition having opened on Wednesday.

The festival opened with the premiere of Italian World War Two film Comandante, directed by Edoardo De Angelis. The event will run until September 9 and closes with a Spanish-language Netflix drama Society of the Snow.

The Festival takes place on the Venice Lido – the so-called beach of Venice – a thin barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon, which is a short boat trip from the main city of Venice. Unlike Venice itself, cars have access to the Lido.

The festival marks the start of the awards season and regularly throws up big favourites for the Oscars. Eight of the past 11 best director awards at the Oscars went to films that debuted at Venice.

There are several categories making up the official selection of films shown, the top being those competing for the coveted Golden Lion award.

New films by directors including Bradley Cooper, Yorgos Lanthimos, David Fincher, Michael Mann, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay and Ryusuke Hamaguchi will compete for the prestigious award.

Movie stars and directors traditionally enjoy travelling to the lagoon city to launch their films. However, this year will offer a bit less sparkle than usual because a Hollywood actors’ strike will prevent many stars from promoting their work here.

The festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera is putting a brave face on the expected disruption and has managed to attract one of the strongest line-ups in recent years, defying dire predictions of a mass no-show by big studio productions.

‘We know that some talent will not be able to attend … But some others will come because they are working in the independent films. So everything is good. It looks very positive.’

Away from Venice’s picture-perfect canals, a sense of crisis pervades the movie-making business, with strikes by both the main U.S. actors and writers’ unions bringing much of the entertainment industry to a standstill.

‘If the strikes last longer, it will have a huge, negative impact on the next (release) season and the awards season as well,’ Barbera said.

Nobody in Hollywood wants to be seen doing the wrong thing by the strikers and the whole film and TV industry has ground to a complete stop.

The writers union, the WGA, went on strike on May 2nd, and were followed by SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, on July 14th.

Ferrari actors (and writers) can attend with out breaking the strikes as the film has been given an exemption because it was made by an independent, Neon, not a studio.

The stars of the film Priscilla, about Priscilla Presley’s life, can also attend without breaking the strike as it was made in Canada.

Three men accused of plying a British teenager with alcohol before gang-raping her in a Magaluf hotel are alleged to have called strangers into their room to enjoy ‘free sex’, it has been claimed.

A total of eight men are accused of raping the 18-year-old woman, according to Spanish police, who said the suspects did not know each other prior to the attack on August 14.

Civil Guard investigators discovered one of the men involved in the alleged rape knew the victim by sight and was staying in the same hotel.

He is said to have partnered with two of the other suspects, who saw the woman drunk in a bar in the early hours and decided to buy her even more drinks with the intention of incapacitating her, investigators believe.

Those three are said to have begun the abuse, before inviting strangers in the corridor to follow them into their hotel room for ‘free sex’, according to local media.

The girl fled a hotel room at around 5am, telling police she had woken up surrounded by young people holding mobile phones.

Six suspects – five French and one Swiss – are in jail in Palma, while two more suspects were arrested in France on Sunday and are awaiting extradition.

The spokesman said: ‘The Civil Guard has closed the investigation sparked by the alleged gang rape that took place in a hotel in Magaluf in the early hours of August 14.

‘Officers saw early on the complexity of the investigation, as the alleged aggressors didn’t form part of the same group of friends but, encouraged by other participants, had allegedly joined the group action in sporadic acts, meaning no type of relationship existed between them,’ he said.

A number of men have since been taken into custody by police, with police in France making the latest arrests after Spanish cops discovered the men had flown to Germany before crossing the border en route to the French city of Strasbourg.

The pair arrested on Sunday face extradition to Majorca, while Civil Guard officers announced yesterday their probe to identify the men involved had now concluded.

Confirming the first six suspects had been held the day of the alleged sex attack and remanded in prison, the force said in a statement: ‘The probe continued to identify the two young men whose arrests were pending.

‘Once they had been identified, officers discovered they had taken a flight to Baden-Baden in Germany so they could head to their homes in the Strasbourg area.

‘The Civil Guard sought the assistance of the French authorities through the normal channels and issued European Arrest Warrants to avoid them evading justice.

‘On Sunday, the French police confirmed they arrested one of them in the French locality of Scherwiller before subsequently confirming a second arrest at Basilea Mulhouse Freiburg Airport in France, when that suspect was trying to take a flight to Turkey to avoid detention.’

Officers initially identified three suspects by ringing the girl’s phone, which it was claimed had been stolen during the ordeal.

The man who answered and two of his friends were then duped into heading to the hotel’s reception without realising that they were going to meet police and the girl.

The alleged victim pointed at the men – named as Anthony G, 20, Anthony A, 20, and Khalil A, 18 – and they were quickly arrested.

Two other French men, Thomas E, 23, and Romain C, 26, were reportedly arrested later at the hotel along with the Swiss man Lucas H who is aged 20.

The arrests were made after the victim described the men to police and ‘various surveillance devices’ were placed on the hotel entrances.

All six men were held on suspicion of rape and remanded in custody on Tuesday at a court hearing on the island capital Palma.

Over the weekend, it emerged the judge who refused the six suspects bail and remanded them in prison pending an ongoing criminal probe had concluded the British teenager had suffered ‘really humiliating and degrading treatment’ and described the men’s claims sex was consensual as ‘completely preposterous’.

Mobile phone footage of the alleged sex attack, seized by police on the suspects’ phones and handed over to the investigating judge, is said to have shown the men had been ‘enjoying themselves and laughing.’

On Sunday, Spanish newspaper Ultima Hora published more details of the judge’s remand ruling that it appeared to have been given full or partial access to.

It said the suspects had allegedly ‘deliberately taken advantage’ of their alleged victim’s drunkenness to persuade her to accompany them to a hotel room before ‘surrounding her’ and ‘carrying out numerous sexual practices’ with her despite her ‘obvious lack of awareness and willing to carry out those practices.’

The criminal investigation has now been passed on to Palma’s Court of Instruction Number Two, having been dealt with by a duty court in its initial stages.

The British teenager, who gave a statement to police as well as the investigating judge in court, is said to have flown back to the UK with a female friend who was on holiday with her.

Medical reports revealed that the girl had several bruises or grip marks on her right arm, suggesting she had been held down, and a small cut on her upper chest.

Police have already confirmed they found footage on the suspects’ mobile phones showing the alleged multiple rape that is now in the hands of the investigating judge and could form a ‘key part’ of the case.

The alleged gang rape is believed to have taken place at the BH Hotel in Magaluf on Monday, August 14

BH Mallorca Resort, the hotel where the alleged sex attack took place, has said it is cooperating fully with police and offered its support to the unnamed holidaymaker.

A spokesman said in a statement released last Thursday: ‘The BH Mallorca Resort deeply regrets what has happened and would like to manifest its firm and forceful repudiation of the alleged sexual attack that occurred in the early hours of Monday August 14 at the hotel.

‘The hotel also wants to demonstrate its solidarity with the alleged victim of this aggression.

‘We are co-operating fully with the Civil Guard and its investigators in everything they consider to be necessary.

‘This hotel ratifies through this statement its commitment to the condemnation of all types of sexual attacks that affect peoples’ dignity and physical integrity.

‘Behaviour that undermines those rights has no place in this establishment.’

The hotel said it would be making no further comment for the time being.

A security guard at the hotel reportedly came to the rescue of the 18-year-old Brit after finding her sobbing on the floor in the lobby.

He called police after finding her around 5am on Monday, recalling how he had just come in for his morning shift and describing the police response as very quick and efficient.

Investigators have already looked at CCTV images the hotel has provided and carried out an inspection of the room where the alleged gang rape took place.

The men held and remanded in prison have not yet been charged with any crime as is normal in Spain, where formal charges are only laid shortly before trial.

At this stage they are ‘investigados’ in an ongoing criminal probe, which means they are under formal investigation.

It is not known if the British teenager has hired her own lawyer.

The four-star adults-only BH Mallorca Resort describes itself as the ‘best accommodation option in Magaluf’ on its website.

It has its own beach club with over 100 VIP beds, a DJ booth and dance floor.

Thousands queue up as cash machines give out free money by mistake across Ireland: Police are sent to disperse customers taking advantage of IT glitch

  • Customers detected they could access cash despite having low levels of funds
  • Glitch allowed people with no money in their account to transfer up to €1,000

Bank of Ireland is facing a crisis after thousands of customers descended on ATMs yesterday evening attempting to take advantage of a major IT glitch.

The bank notified customers early yesterday afternoon that there was an issue with its online app and personal banking website, after being flooded with complaints.

And by the evening, customers had detected that they could access cash from ATMs despite having low levels of funds. Gardaí were instructed to clear the queues from ATMs as people lined up to take advantage of the glitch.

Thousands of people were last night queuing around the block outside some branches to withdraw money that they did not have in their own accounts.

A source said: ‘Word started filtering through after 5pm that this was happening and it spread like wildfire. There are people with no overdrafts being able to take out a grand that they don’t have.

‘It’s like it’s free money, people are saying. Gardaí were told to disperse the queues tonight. These people who took money out will be expected to pay it all back but we’re still at a very early stage.’

In some cases, the fault with the online app allowed people who have no money in their account to transfer up to € 1,000 into a Revolut account.

They can then withdraw the cash from the Revolut account through any ATM.

As word and videos spread quickly on social media, the frenzied withdrawal of cash in Dublin, Limerick and Navan, Co. Meath among other locations, continued until the gardaí clamped down despite warnings on social media that there is no such thing as free cash and the money will have to be repaid.

In a statement after 11pm last night, Bank of Ireland warned customers that any money taken from their account will be debited.

‘We would like to remind customers if transferring/withdrawing funds – including over normal limits – this money will be debited from their account. We are conscious customers may not be able to check balances , but should not withdraw/transfer if they are likely to become overdrawn.’

Yesterday, Bank of Ireland apologised to customers after it said it was hit with unexpected disruption to its mobile app and online services.

Customers were unable to access the bank’s mobile app and Banking365 online services for hours, including many Irish customers abroad. Upon opening the app, users are informed they are unable to connect while the website is also unavailable.

Customers reported having no access to their accounts for hours and being unable to transfer money for “important payments”.

The issue prompted an initial statement from Bank of Ireland, saying that it was working to fix the issue as quickly as possible and it apologised for any inconvenience caused.

The bank was inundated with queries from customers on social media.

By 10pm last night, the bank said it did not have an estimated time for when its mobile app and web service 365Online will be restored.

A mother and daughter from the Caribbean and an 80-year-old Olympian with Parkinson’s are set to become Virgin Galactic’s first space tourism crew.

The Richard Branson-founded company announced the trio Monday, who will soar to the final frontier on August 10.

Among the members are Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers, who won their seats in a 2021 contest and Jon Goodwin, who participated in the 1972 Munich Games.

The launch is planned for August 10 at Virgin Galactic’s Spaceport America in New Mexico and will see the ‘mothership’ carrier plane take off with the spaceplane attached to its underbelly.

Once the planes reach at least 45,000 feet, the rocket plane will separate and travel more than 50 miles above Earth’s surface.

Virgin Galactic has already booked a backlog of 800 customers vying for their chance to go to space, which was made possible by the company’s inaugural mission in June.

Tickets were first sold for $250,000 but has since increased to $450,000.

The company announced Galactic 02 on July 13 but did not reveal the customers who will board the spaceplane VSS Unity.

Virgin Galactic did send three researchers in June who spent the time in zero-gravity conducting research – August’s mission is purely for enjoyment.

DailyMail.com takes a look at each of the three members on board the upcoming flight.

Keisha Schahaff

Schahaff, from Antigua, won a sweepstakes with Omaze, an American for-profit fundraising company, for a once-in-a-lifetime commercial trip to the final frontier aboard Virgin Galactic’s Unity.

The sweepstakes kicked off in July following Virgin Galactic’s historic mission that took Branson to space and finished on September 1.

Branson surprised Schahaff at her home in the Caribbean to personally award her the two seats.

Schahaff is a health and wellness coach specializing in helping women achieve balance through healthy eating, energy work, and a variety of empowering wellness practices, according to her website.

She also reveals on the site that she suffered from depression and set out on a journey for self-healing, and after overcoming the ailments, she embarked on a mission to help other women.

When I was two years old, just looking up to the skies, I thought, ‘How can I get there?’ But, being from the Caribbean, I didn’t see how something like this would be possible,’ Schahaff said in a Monday statement.

‘The fact that I am here, the first to travel to space from Antigua, shows that space really is becoming more accessible.

‘I know my experience will change me, and I hope I can share that energy and inspire the people around me – in my role as a life coach, a mother, and an ambassador for our beautiful planet.’

Anastasia Mayers

Mayers, the second youngest person to travel to space, is one of Schahaff’s two daughters.

She is in her second year at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, studying Philosophy and Physics.

Mayers is set on becoming an astrobiologist who thought living on the small island impossible until her mother won the tickets aboard Unity.

Jon Goodwin

Jon Godwin spent his life as a daredevil, winning races in the Arctic Circle and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014

Goodwin, from Great Britain, is an adventurer and the first Olympian to travel to space, having competed in the 1972 Munich Games.

He is a retired slalom canoeist, has been a regular and leading competitor in the Ferrari Hillclimb Championship since 1992, winning in 2000 and 2008, and has more Class wins than any other competitor – as of the end of the 2020 season.

Goodwin is married to Pauline, who also competed in the Olympic games in 1972 and 1976.

He also spent his life as a daredevil, winning races in the Arctic Circle and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Goodwin was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014 and has since been dedicated to raising awareness for the disease and the importance of research into finding a cure – and hopes that taking part in this mission will help shine a spotlight on the condition.

He has been vying for space for nearly a decade and almost gave up after receiving his diagnosis, thinking Virgin Galactic would not accept him – but that was not the case.

‘When I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014, I was determined not to let it stand in the way of living life to the fullest. I hope this inspires all others facing adversity,’ Goodwin shared in a statement Monday.

How Galactic 02 will take off

The crew will board Unity, attached to the mothership Eve, which will shoot down the runway and take off toward the skies.

Unity will then ignite its thruster and shut off once it reaches space.

At the apex of the flight, the spaceplane is expected to ‘feather’ its wings open and hover above our planet’s atmosphere, allowing the crew to experience weightlessness and epic views of the final frontier for a few minutes.

Musk’s SpaceX and Bezos’ Blue Origin use rockets to launch capsules into space, while Branson chose to take a different approach with mid-air launches.

Branson’s technique has been explored over several decades of flight research, including the X-1, the first plane to break the sound barrier, and the X-15, the fastest-piloted aircraft ever flown, topping out at 4,520 miles an hour during a 1967 flight.

And it reduces the need for massive amounts of fuel since the craft is not using force from the rocket to crawl through the dense lower atmosphere.

The smart trick to boost your WiFi for FREE using old device you already own

  •  Did you know that by tweaking an old router you can create a DIY WiFi extender

Many people struggle with WiFi connectivity, particularly those who work from home – but what many people don’t know is that you can repurpose a worn out router into a WiFi extender.

Instead of investing in a new router, Which? tech support expert Tom Morgan says it’s worth trying to reset your old one first.

If you have a lot of space in your home, you may have considered purchasing a WiFi extender to increase the range your router covers.

Many people struggle with WiFi connectivity, particularly those who work from home – but what many people don’t know is that you can repurpose a worn out router into a WiFi extender (stock image)

All you have to do is tweak a few settings to save some money, then put your brand new router in an area of your property with weak signal.

If you find an ethernet cable too inconvenient, he recommends using a powerline adapter as a handy alternative to do the following.

How to repurpose your old router into brand new

Step 1: Factory reset the old router – this varies depending on model but it should be clear on your device’s instructions – usually you hold down on the reset button for 30 seconds.

Step 2: Ensure you note down the IP addresses of both your routers – the old one you are repurposing and the one that is currently in use in your property. HINT: You can find these on the back of most routers.

Step 3:  Find an ethernet cable that you can connect to one of the ethernet/LAN ports on the old router and have the other end ready to be plugged into your computer.

Step 4: Use a search engine on your desktop to enter the IP address of your old router like a URL. It will prompt you to enter details about your router’s identity, such as username and password.

Step 5: As soon as you’re signed into your account, find the LAN settings and then the DHCP settings.

Step 6: Disable the DHCP server on the original router, to redirect the IP address from your main router.

Step 7: Head to IP address in settings and you can set a fixed IP address to match the range of the router you’re currently using.

Step 8: On your old router, search for network name or SSID and update this, and your password, so that it correlates with the router in current use. This will allow for a seamless integration of the two devices and create automatic connection.

Step 9: Simply save these changes and disconnect the ethernet cable you plugged into your computer earlier. Now you can connect one end of the ethernet cable to a LAN port on your old router, and the other end to the matching cable on the main router.

Clever trick to free up loads of storage space on your iPhone

If you have an iPhone, you’ve no doubt been prompted to buy an expensive iCloud storage plan costing 99p for an extra 50GN a month – a whole 20p more than before.

But while Apple is free to hike up prices whenever it chooses, iPhone can claw back some of the costs every year with a nifty settings hack.

What many people do not know is that the default lifespan for text messages is permanent – every message your iPhone sends and receives is etched into your phone’s memory for its entire life.

A woman holding onto an iPhone (stock image)

A woman holding onto an iPhone (stock image)

This can be handy when sifting through nostalgic memories or conversations with loved ones, but keeping every single interaction on your phone is taking up valuable storage space – especially when it could save you few pounds.

How to optimise your iPhone’s storage for free

To ensure you delete old text messages correctly, you must head to the Apple settings app, scroll down to the messages subsection and select it.

You will then be confronted by a few different options, but scroll down until you see ‘keep messages’.

Once in, press on the icon and then scroll down until you arrive near the bottom of the page where you can see ‘message history’.

Select this and you’ll see 3 different prompts: 30 days, 1 year and forever.

You’ll see your phone automatically puts all of your messages into the ‘forever’ category.

You'll quickly all your text messages have automatically been placed in the forever category

But, if you select 30 days, you can permanently delete all text messages and message attachments from your device that are 30 days old.

Proceed with caution if you have memories you want to hold on to, but this single tap can save you on iCloud storage costs over the long term.

This is particularly helpful for users who have had several iPhones over the years, or recently made a switch from one model to the other and transferred their old phone’s contents to their new device.

Once you’ve made the switch to keep text messages for 30 days, check your storage – and you should now have more space.

If you go back to the Apple settings and scroll down to ‘general’, you can view your iPhone storage, where you’ll be offered other alternatives for cutting down the waste – such as ‘offload unused apps’ and ‘review downloaded videos’.

You will see a detailed breakdown of your storage usage.
