Vladimir Putin has lost one of his top nuclear submarine force commanders after his vehicle was hit by heavy machine gun fire while he was on a peacekeeping mission in Azerbaijan

Captain Ivan Kovgan, 52, was gunned down in the disputed Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, where he was seconded as deputy commander of a peacekeeping force.

The 52-year-old military leader was also deputy commander of Russia‘s Northern Fleet submarine force based in the Arctic.

He died alongside Colonel Tagir-Murod Karaev, from Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defence Forces, along with four other Russian servicemen, when their UAZ Patriot vehicle was riddled with bullets by the Azerbaijani army.

‘Their vehicle came under fire. Everyone was killed,’ a source said.

Photos of the 4×4 vehicle that held the military figures show it was riddled with bullets.

Those responsible for the shooting of the submarine commander and other peacekeepers have been detained, and are expected to face criminal action.

Their commander has been suspended.

Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev personally apologised to Putin for the killing of Kovgan and the other peacekeepers, and promised financial compensation for their families.

‘In order to investigate all the causes of the incident, the investigative authorities of Azerbaijan and Russia are working on the spot,’ said the defence ministry in Baku.

It called for ‘patience’ during the probe and expressed condolences to the Russian military and the soldiers’ relatives.

The killings came as ceasefire between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians in the region was declared, just 24 hours after Azerbaijan launched a military operation to gain full control over Nagorno-Karabakh, a mainly Armenia province.

The area lies in the mountains of the South Caucasus region of eastern Europe and Asia, between the Black Sea and the Caspian, and has been at the centre of one of the world’s longest running conflicts.

Russian peacekeepers were sent to the region after thousands of people were reportedly killed in six weeks of fighting between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the self-declared breakaway region of Artsakh.

  • More than 100,000 operations and appointments may be cancelled from strike
  • Walkouts will be repeated next month to coincide with Tory party conference

Doctors have been accused of ‘going against the ethics of medicine’ to stage the most disruptive strike in NHS history today.

Junior doctors are joining forces with consultants in the first of a series of co-ordinated walkouts designed to ‘maximise disruption’.

This week’s industrial action, which began yesterday with consultants and continues until Friday with a three-day junior doctors walkout, may see more than 100,000 operations and appointments cancelled, NHS bosses warned.

They said the ‘awful scenario’ will put patients at ‘the highest level of risk in living memory’, and affect ‘many more groups of patients who haven’t been disrupted by previous strikes’.

Many patients are experiencing second or third delays to treatment. Cancer patients could be at particular risk, with ‘some of the very sickest patients maybe suffering the most’.

And in what has been branded by the Health Secretary as a ‘politically’ motivated move, the mass walkouts will be repeated next month to coincide with Rishi Sunak‘s first Tory party conference as Prime Minister.

Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: ‘This is likely to be the biggest walkout the NHS has ever seen, will cause serious disruption, and put patients at the highest level of risk in living memory.’

He added: ‘Consultants and junior doctors walking out together is the awful scenario health leaders have long feared, and now face a tough few days in their efforts to maintain patient safety, ahead of a longer, more difficult clear-up of the fallout.

‘We suspect that, despite our members preparing thoroughly in advance, we may see more than 100,000 operations and appointments cancelled this time around, taking the total to well over a million.’

Health leaders warned patients to expect five ‘Christmas Days’ in the next three weeks, meaning most non-emergency care has been cancelled.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay accused the British Medical Association of ‘increasing militancy’.

Professor Karol Sikora, a leading consultant oncologist, said the coordinated strikes were ‘storing up big problems for patients in the future’.

He added: ‘For doctors to strike is against the ethics of medicine.

‘If you miss cancer and someone goes for another two years without a diagnosis, it’s as good as leaving someone in the gutter bleeding… people will die.’

Dr Vishal Sharma, chairman of the BMA’s consultants’ committee, said staff felt forced into taking strike action, adding that while pay had been eroded, workloads had increased.

Russia in flight chaos as Ukrainian drone attack forces ALL Moscow airports to close – with Putin’s top propagandist’s home close to one strike

  • The suspected Ukrainian attack forces Moscow’s airports to temporarily close
  • Kyiv does not typically comment on attacks that have occurred inside Russia

Moscow‘s airports have been thrown into chaos and all outgoing and incoming fights delayed following a suspected kamikaze drone attack from Ukraine.

All airports across the Russian capital were temporarily closed on Monday after Russia’s defence ministry claimed a Kyiv drone was downed over the capital.

Explosions were heard in the sky above the city as Kremlin air defences attacked the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) reportedly aimed at Moscow.

One drone came down close to the sprawling mansion of pro-Putin propagandist Margarita Simonyan, 43, head of the RT state media empire, and a pro-war fanatic.

Video footage captured across the city appeared to show a trail of air defence missiles and a drone exploding as grey smoke engulfed the surrounding air.

‘The drone that was shot down in the Istra district fell on the street next to us,’ propagandist Simonyan said.

‘Thanks to our air defences there were no casualties,’ she said.

A video from Shot Media evidently highlighted a drone exploding as it was hit in an air defence strike.

The Russian defence ministry said an aircraft-style drone was blasted out of the sky at 8.16am over the Istra district of Moscow region.

Ukraine – which does not typically comment on attacks inside Russian territory – did not immediately comment on the suspected drone strike attempt.

Earlier a drone was downed by electronic warfare means, crash landing in a street near the village of Pokrovskoye, in the Ruzsky district of Moscow region.

There was no independent verification of Russian claims that there was no damage.

Hundreds of flights were diverted or delayed from all four major Moscow airports – Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky – as air space around the capital was shut under the so-called ‘Carpet regime’, an emergency plan for incoming drones.

At least four planes bound for Domodedovo were diverted as far as Kazan, some 500 miles to the east.

One pilot told passengers: ‘All airports in Moscow are closed.’

Russian media quoted a spokesperson for Domodedovo airport as saying flights were restricted ‘in order to ensure additional flight safety measures.’

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin posted: ‘Air defence forces shot down a drone while trying to fly up to Moscow. No damage or casualties.’

The airports were closed for two hours during the attacks. Normal operations resumed afterwards.

Trains were also thrown into chaos around the Moscow Kyivsky station after an apparent sabotage attack on signalling and points equipment at Solnechnay.

‘Trains in both directions are significantly behind schedule,’ said a report.

It comes as the Netherlands and Denmark indicated they would provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets on the stipulation that certain conditions be met.

The additional supply of aircraft would be a long awaited addition to Ukraine’s forces and defence capabilities.

Harry Styles is set to follow in Gwyneth Paltrow’s footsteps as he launches his own ‘sex-themed’ perfume.

The singer, 29, will sell the scents as part of his lifestyle brand Pleasing, inspired by the Oscar winner’s own company Goop and infamous vagina candles.

According to The Mirror Harry has named the aromas Rivulets, Closeness, Bright and Hot and aim to evoke ‘a delightful encounter with a stranger’.

The description for Closeness reads ‘a whispered ‘yes’, skin pressed against skin’ with Harry brining in Gwyneth’s former chief Goop designer Shaun Kearney as his brand’s CEO.

With a source telling the publication: ‘You only have to read the descriptions of the fragrances to see the influence of Shaun’.

MailOnline have contacted Harry’s reps for comment.

Following the announcement of the appointment Harry said of Sean: ‘His  exceptional vision and extensive experience will be invaluable as we enter the next chapter of Pleasing’.

In April the brand released its latest nail polish and apparel collection, Pollinator, inspired by the local wildlife in Harry’s North London neighbourhood.

Gwyneth launched her lifestyle brand in 2008 and has flogged everything from Psychic vampire repellant spray to vaginal steamers.

It comes after Harry had secretly attended the press night rumoured girlfriend Taylor Russell’s new play The Effect at the National Theatre in London.

The duo certainly did nothing to deter dating rumours as pictures showed the pair could barely keep their eyes off each other, with Bones And All star Taylor placing an affectionate hand on Harry’s shoulder.

Harry appeared enamoured by the beauty as he leaned in close and spoke in her ear, seemingly not noticing anyone else around him.

He introduced Taylor to pal James Corden and his wife Julia Carey, who were also in attendance.

Their cosy outing comes a month after they further fueled relationship speculation as she attended the singer’s Love On Tour concert in Vienna.

The As It Was hitmaker, who was shockingly hit in the eye by a flying object on stage also during the night, first sparked rumours with the Bones And All actress when they were spotted out in London together in June.

In photos obtained by TMZ, the Canadian-born star could be seen situated in a special VIP tent section at the concert alongside a crew member who had a variety of technical items in front of him.

She reportedly was seen dancing the night away to the former One Direction singer’s hit tracks for the ‘entirety’ of the show and donned a chic, sleeveless white dress for the outing.

According to the outlet, Russell was spotted out in Vienna before the concert on Saturday wearing the same white dress while standing next to a man who appeared to possibly be Styles in a viral Twitter photo

Following this, a short video shared by Pop Crave on Twitter showed the two stars enjoying an outing together in Vienna the day after the concert.

In June, the singer and actress were spotted together for the first time as they exited a museum in London, and at one point, also reportedly held hands, per TMZ. The stars, however, have yet to publicly comment on the romance rumours.

When the two stars first crossed paths is still unclear, but both Harry and Taylor attended the 79th Venice International Film Festival last year in September 2022.

Styles notably was promoting Don’t Worry Darling, while Russell celebrated the premiere of Bones And All.

The Grammy winner previously dated Olivia Wilde from January 2021 until their split the following year in November 2022.

At the time of the break up, a source told People, ‘He’s still touring and is now going abroad. She is focusing on her kids and her work in L.A. It’s a very amicable decision,’ and added that, ‘They’re still very close friends.’

However, most recently, the Don’t Worry Darling actor was briefly linked to supermodel Emily Ratajkowski, when the two were seen passionately kissing on the streets of Tokyo in a video exclusively obtained by DailyMail.com in March.

The following month, the model herself publicly addressed the viral kiss and told The Los Angeles Times in April that, ‘I’m definitely still not thinking about guys.’

‘There’s a million insane, inaccurate things about my relationships [that are said],’ she expressed, and then added, ‘Although, yeah. You know, sometimes things just happen.’

A shocking video has shown Russian barrier troops appearing to shoot their fellow soldiers as they attempt to flee the field of battle, Ukrainian sources have claimed.

Captured by a Ukrainian drone and posted to online messaging platform Telegram, the footage shows three Russian soldiers aiming weapons in the direction of at least seven comrades, and seemingly firing off rounds.

The brutal clip emerged as Ukraine stepped up its counter-offensive, with Kyiv’s forces claiming they have liberated at least four front-line villages – amid reports that Russian troops are being killed fleeing through their own minefields.

There have also been reports of Russian troops retreating as Ukraine breaks through Moscow’s defensive lines, with a number of other videos posted online appearing to show dozens of soldiers running across fields as they abandon their positions.

The latest clip was first posted to a channel called ‘Look for Your Own’, a project created with the backing of Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to share photos of Russian invaders captured or killed in Ukraine, to help their relatives identify them.

A shocking video has shown Russian barrier troops appearing to shoot their fellow soldiers as they attempt to flee the field of battle

The 14-second video shows the three armed Russian soldiers appearing out of a treeline and confronting the retreating troops who are running towards them across an area of open ground, marked by vehicle tracks.

The fleeing soldiers appear exhausted, barely able to stand as it is. Some can be seen dropping their helmets to the ground as they see the trio appear.

It’s possible they were relieved to see fellow Russian troops, but that is not clear.

Quickly, however, the scene changes. The three Russian barrier troops push two of the fleeing soldiers back, and fire their rifles in the air as a warning.

Some of the fleeing soldiers drop to the ground and begin to crawl the other way.

But as they do so, the barrier troops appear to open fire.

The flash of a muzzle is seen about nine seconds into the clip, and two of the soldiers fall to the ground. They are not seen moving again in the footage.

One of the three barrier troops moves over to where the other soldiers were.

While it is not clear from the footage whether he opens fire, the soldier is seen aiming a rifle in their direction, and more of the fleeing troops stop moving.

As the clip ends, the three Russians are seen moving between the prone bodies on the floor, seemingly checking for any sign of life.

It was not clear from the footage whether the fleeing troops were killed, injured or just told to lie prone on the ground.

MailOnline was not able to verify the authenticity of the footage, with the Telegram channel only saying a ‘barrier unit’ had shot Russian military personnel.

Ukrainian Independent Information Agency (UNIAN) said on Monday that it had confirmed the authenticity of the video, the Kyiv Post reported.

Barrier troops are units tasked with preventing soldiers running away from the field of battle, using lethal forces if necessary.

According to the Kyiv Post, such troops have been deployed by Russia to Ukraine for months, as Moscow desperately tried to make advances.

Stalin’s Order No. 227: ‘Not a step back!’

During the first stages of the Second World War on the Eastern Front, the Soviet forces suffered from heavy losses – but also from mass retreat and desertion – as Nazi Germany advanced towards Moscow.

In an attempt to counter this, on July 28, 1942, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin issued Order No. 227 – known for its famous line: ‘Not a step back!’.

The order commanded each front (or Soviet military formation) to create up to three penal battalions made up of 800 middle-ranking commanders and high-ranking commanders accused of disciplinary problems.

These battalions were sent to the most dangerous sections on the frontlines.

From 1942 to 1945, more than 422,000 Red Army personnel were sentenced to join penal battalions.

The order also established ‘blocking detachments’ at the rear, tasked with shooting ‘panic-mongers and cowards’ within the Red Army’s ranks.

In the first three months, blocking detachments killed 1,000 penal troops  and sent 24,000 more to penal battalions.

Records from October 1942 show that 15,649 soldiers were picked up having fled the Stalingrad Front. Of these, 278 were shot dead.

By October 1942, the idea of regular blocking detachments were quietly dropped by Soviet leadership.

In November, Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported that Russia had ‘probably started deploying ‘barrier troops’ or ‘blocking units’ in Ukraine.

It said this was ‘due to low morale and reluctance to fight’.

‘These units threaten to shoot their own retreating soldiers in order to compel offensives and have been used in previous conflicts by Russian forces,’ the MoD added in its intelligence update at the time.

‘The tactic of shooting deserters likely attests to the low quality, low morale and indiscipline of Russian forces,’ the update added.

Such reports also emerged from the Kremlin’s months-long assault on the eastern city of Bakhmut, which saw the Wagner mercenary group employ ‘human wave’ tactics in an attempt to overwhelm the city’s defences.

This resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Wagner, publicly threatened to execute deserters.

At least two Wagner deserters, who joined the Ukrainian side but were later captured by Moscow’s armies, were executed with a sledgehammer to the head.

It is likely the shocking ‘barrier troop’ practice will become even more commonplace as Kyiv’s counter-offensive continues, and Russia works to defend its positions.

There have been frequent reports about Russian soldiers suffering from poor morale as Ukraine inflicts heavy losses on Vladimir Putin’s armies.

Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin used ‘barrier troops’ in the Second World War as part of his ‘No One Turn Back’ order.

While Ukraine’s troops are fighting to protect their homeland, Russians are battling on foreign soil in an invasion that many thought would be over in a matter of days.

According to Ukraine, Russia has suffered more than 200,000 casualties since Putin ordered the invasion on February 24, 2022 – a high attrition rate for what many only recently considered to be the second most powerful military in the world.

Jason Jay Smart, a political adviser on post-Soviet and international politics, told Newsweek that ‘Russians shooting their own troops has a long tradition in Russian military history, and it has been commonplace throughout this war’.

He said the incident captured by the drone footage, which he said shows ‘a total lack of concern or interest in preserving human life’, is the epitome of ‘how the Russian military thinks and behaves’.

Meanwhile, at least ten people have been killed and dozens wounded after missiles hit civilian buildings in an overnight attack in the central city of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, a regional governor said on Tuesday.

Serhiy Lysak, of the Dnipropetrovsk region, said the strike involving cruise missiles hit a five-storey residential building and the area was engulfed in fire.

Kryvyi Rih mayor Oleksandr Vilkul said that one person is still believed to be trapped under the rubble and 28 others were wounded.

The devastation in president Volodymyr Zelensky’s home town is the latest bloodshed in Russia’s war in Ukraine, now in its 16th month.

Meanwhile, the head of Ukraine’s ground troops said the country’s forces were ‘moving forward’ outside the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

Oleksandr Syrskyi wrote on Telegram that Russian forces are ‘losing positions on the flanks’ while Ukrainian troops were conducting ‘defensive’ operations in the area.

For weeks, Ukrainian officials have been reporting small gains west of Bakhmut, which was largely devastated in the war’s longest and bloodiest battle before Moscow’s forces took control last month.

Over the last day in Ukrainian-held areas of Donetsk, nearly a dozen frontline towns and villages came under increased shelling as Ukrainian troops pushed forward, Mr Zelensky’s office said.

Also on Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry published a video showing what it said was a German-made Leopard 2 tank and US-made Bradley fighting vehicle captured from Ukrainian forces.

According to the ministry, the video was shot by Russian soldiers after fierce fighting in the southern Zaporizhzhia, and a soldier is seen pointing at the immobilised vehicles. It wasn’t immediately possible to verify the video’s authenticity.

Like the Bakhmut area, battle zones in Zaporizhzhia are one of several places along the roughly 1,000-kilometre front line where Ukrainian forces have been intensifying their counter-offensive operations.

Vladimir Rogov, an official with the Moscow-appointed administration for parts of Zaporizhzhia that Russia controls, alleged that the Ukrainian counter-offensive had failed, and told state news agency RIA-Novosti that Ukrainian forces ‘continue to suffer colossal losses when they make new attempts to advance’.

He did not elaborate, and his claims could not be immediately verified.

Kyiv renewed its plea for operational silence around the long-awaited counter-offensive against Russian forces with a clip of heavily-armed soldiers pressing their fingers to their lips.

The sleekly-produced footage features masked front-line troops gesturing for silence amid the distant rumble of artillery and gunfire.

It ends with images of soaring F-16 fighter jets – long coveted by Kyiv as it seeks to boost its air defence against Russian missiles and drones.

Authorities in recent days have cracked down on citizens sharing images or footage of air defence systems shooting down Russian missiles.

‘Plans love silence. There will be no announcement of the start,’ the ministry said in a video posted to official Telegram channels, apparently referring to the counter-offensive.

Anticipation has mounted around what is expected to be a broad attack by Ukrainian forces to retake Russian-occupied territory in the east and south.

It comes after months of clashes around the devastated city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine in what had become the war’s longest and bloodiest battle.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly discouraged public speculation over the counter-offensive operation, saying it could help the enemy.

Kyiv’s Western allies in recent months have provided weapons, armour and ammunition for the counter-offensive, which military experts have said could prove difficult against dug-in Russian forces.

In an interview published on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was prepared for the operation but avoided making any predictions.

‘We strongly believe that we will succeed,’ Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal.

‘To be honest, it can go a variety of ways, completely different,’ he said.

‘But we are going to do it, and we are ready.’

Kyiv hopes a counter-offensive to reclaim territory will change the dynamics of the war that has raged since Russia invaded its smaller neighbour 15 months ago.

Zelensky said last month Ukraine needed to wait for more Western armoured vehicles to arrive before launching the counter-offensive.

He has been on a diplomatic push to maintain Western support, seeking more military aid and weapons, which is key for Ukraine to succeed in its plans.

Russia holds swathes of Ukrainian territory in the east, south and southeast.

A long spell of dry weather in some parts of Ukraine has driven anticipation that the counter-offensive might be imminent.

Over several weeks, Ukraine has increased its strikes on Russian ammunition depots and logistical routes.

On Saturday, Ukraine’s military said in a daily report that Mariinka in the Donetsk region in the east was the focus of fighting.

Ukrainian forces repelled all 14 Russian troops’ attacks there, the report said.

Other senior officials, including Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov, have similarly sought to tamp down expectations.

In some cases, however, the military has also fed the anticipation. Social media outreach by Kyiv has often been intended to intimidate the Kremlin.

Last week, it posted a flashy video depicting troops preparing for battle and reciting a rousing blessing, which was later aired as a recruiting clip.

Ukraine’s deputy defence minister has said that Russia is targeting key cities and ‘decision-making centres’ in order to prevent Ukraine’s counter-offensive.

Volodymyr Havrylov said that Ukraine had faced repeated volleys of ballistic missiles in May, especially in urban centres including the capital, Kyiv.

‘Their primary goal is to stop our counter-offensive and target decision-making centres,’ Havrylov said at Asia’s top security conference, the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

For Russia ‘it was a huge surprise to find that the effectiveness of (their ballistic missiles) was almost zero against modern air defence systems, which we received from our partners,’ he added.

Dr Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the president’s office and his chief foreign affairs adviser, has said that Ukraine’s counter-offensive has not yet started because Kyiv still lacks the weapons and ammunition to drive out the Russians and take back the country.

Zhovkva said the military required more reinforcements to start the operation, which was originally billed as a spring offensive but will now take place in summer.

‘I’m not a military man,’ he told The Sunday Times. ‘I’m working on the diplomatic front and my task is more weapons, more support, more ammunition. But if you want to start a successful counter-offensive you need everything at your disposal, including artillery, armoured vehicles and tanks, so probably we don’t have enough.’

Zhovka believes that Russia is attempting to keep Ukraine from attacking by bombing Kyiv, which has experienced 24 attacks in the past month, with more than 400 Iranian Shaheed drones and 114 cruise missiles involved, costing $1.7 billion, according to estimates from the Kyiv Post.

Zhovka spoke out against the European Union for allowing Russia to keep profiting from its energy resources, meaning that it can buy more missiles while draining Ukraine’s defensive weapon stocks.

Zhovka said: ‘Sorry, but the European countries are still too slow and not doing enough with sanctions. Russia can still earn a huge amount of money trading its energy resources including gas, earning dollars and euros, and every euro and dollar is spent on producing more missiles and artillery to kill more Ukrainians.’

Kyiv’s armed forces said on Sunday that clashes are continuing around the city of Bakhmut and Moscow is still suffering ‘significant losses’ despite a relative easing of combat operations in recent days.

Russia claimed late last month to have captured Bakhmut following the protracted battle that has seen heavy casualties on both sides, but Ukraine says its forces still retain a small foothold and denies that Moscow is in full control of the city.

Ukraine’s top military command said in its daily report on Sunday that Russian forces had carried out two unsuccessful operations around Bakhmut and launched a number of air strikes and artillery shelling on nearby villages.

It said some 23 combat clashes had taken place over the past 24 hours in the Donetsk region, where Bakhmut is located, and in neighbouring Luhansk. Russia claims to have annexed both regions from Ukraine, along with three others, including Crimea.

‘The enemy continues to suffer significant losses in the Bakhmut direction,’ the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on the Telegram messaging app on Saturday after visiting troops in the area.

‘Defence forces continue to fight. We will win.’

Meanwhile, Zelensky has said that Russia’s war, now in its 16th month, has killed at least 500 Ukrainian children.

He provided the number hours after rescue workers found the body of a two-year-old girl who died near the city of Dnipro in one of the latest Russian strikes.

The president said in a statement that ‘Russian weapons and hatred, which continue to take and destroy the lives of Ukrainian children every day’, killed the hundreds who had perished since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

‘Many of them could have become famous scholars, artists, sports champions, contributing to Ukraine’s history,’ he said.

Zelensky said it was impossible to establish the exact number of children who were casualties due to the ongoing hostilities and because some areas are under Russian occupation.

Even after the scandalous unraveling of the one-time freshman GOP star George Santos, at least one Republican is daring to try to hold on to the seat for his party.

Kellen Curry, an Afghanistan war veteran and former Wall Street banker, said he had two moments of reckoning that prompted him to run for New York’s third congressional seat: the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and the revelations that Santos had ‘completely defrauded the American public.’

‘I had an incredibly powerful experience there, serving alongside allies in that in that effort and, and had teammates who unfortunately did not come back home,’ Curry told DailyMail.com in an interview.

‘Watching the disastrous withdrawal – Afghans clinging from planes and the 13 Marines that were killed,I just felt like, we deserve to have leaders in our national legislature that is reflective of the service and sacrifice of myself and so many others who have worn the uniform.’

‘Santos was not reflective of that caliber.’

Santos was the first openly gay House GOP member and one of four to flip a blue seat in New York’s own ‘red wave.’ Now he’s the conman of the conference and stares down a 13-count federal indictment with up to 20 years in prison.

Asked about the Santos lie that outraged him the most, Curry pointed to an allegation that Santos stole $3,000 he raised for life-saving surgery for a homeless Navy veteran’s cancer-stricken dog.

After setting up a GoFundMe, Santos allegedly never handed over the funds and the dog died.

While five are already vying to take on Santos on the Democratic side, Curry is the indicted congressman’s only GOP primary challenger.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said he will not back Santos’ reelection, as have the New York State and local parties.

As for the support he’s garnered, ‘a lot of people are certainly intrigued,’ Curry said.

‘I’ve had a number of good conversations both in D.C., in the district and around the state,’ he continued. ‘It’s still early. I think people rightfully want to make sure we do our homework this time.’

House Republicans on Wednesday voted to toss a Democrat-led resolution to expel Santos back to the Ethics Committee – where an investigation could determine a full House vote is needed to expel the congressman.

The speaker is stuck between needing Santos’ vote in the narrowly divided conference and accepting the damage Santos has done to the conference’s reputation.

Curry is the only Republican running in a primary against George Santos

If Santos were expelled, his seat would be open until a special election could decide the winner. That district is rated ‘lean Democrat’ by Cook Political Report.

‘We believe that the best candidate in this race would be me, and we would welcome Mr. McCarthy’s support,’ Curry said.

Curry was raised on an Air Force base in Oklahoma and came to New York’s third by way of a career on Wall Street as a banker at J.P. Morgan.

‘I think a Republican can win this seat. It’s a 50/50 district, a Republican with the right message, that is,’ Curry said.

He said he thought his service and finance background would play well in the suburban New York City district – the nation’s fourth wealthiest district in the country.

‘A number of the constituents here resonate with coming in and out of the city and working in financial services. And then there’s some natural constituencies in in the districts such as the Merchant Marine Academy. Their alumni have been have been very supportive, so far.

‘Then it’s working with small businesses – when I was in the military that’s what I did: I was a procurement and contracting guy working with businesses.’

Curry was attached to an Afghan military unit called the Special Mission Wing, training on Taliban and ISIS-K offensive operations the very pilots that swiftly collapsed to the Taliban as the U.S. pulled out.

Curry insists the Biden administration ignored the advice of its top generals in favor of following the political winds.

‘It was driven by domestic politics and and not going out and articulating to the American people why keeping a residual force, which was the recommendation of a number of, our generals was important.’

Curry said not all of the blame fell on Biden, as past administrations had equipped the Afghans with technology that was too advanced for them to maintain on their own.

‘The Afghans became too dependent on American forces, but that was something that the Biden administration should have recognized that if we bowed out immediately, then you know, things would collapse as they as they did.’

At the time, Biden expressed frustration that Afghan forces fell as quickly as they did – insisting they hadn’t wanted to fight – though they lost some 66,000 over the course of 20 years of battle.

‘American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war, and dying in a war, that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves,’ Biden said at the time. He also insisted he was bound by a Trump-era peace deal with the Taliban that promised all troops would move out.

‘They’re using the Trump years as a pretext for their own kind of failure to see around the corner and to move and to rise above and to make decisions beyond domestic politics,’ Curry said.

Curry is confident he can win his own race by ‘sticking to the issues’ and keeping it local, after wall-to-wall media coverage of Santos, the 34-year-old freshman whose never-ending lies went under the radar until after the election.

‘When I go around the district, people are — they get the whole Santos thing and they’re kind of sick and tired of talking about it.’

‘Right now we have the most ineffective member of Congress,’ Curry added.

‘So what people want to hear is what impacts them on a daily basis – we talk about things like achieving the gold standard or constituency services. We talk about things like restoring funding for the Merchant Marine Academy so we can rebuild the campus. We talk about what federal resources we think we can bring to bear in our public schools to increase mental health services for our youth. We talk about lowering the cost of living on Long Island.’

He said his goal is to restore faith in politics.

‘It’s about communicating to people that we have something to fight for. It gets so dejected and so cynical about our politics,’ the candidate said.

‘If you think about it, there are people right now pouring across the border into this country to take part in the American dream. And so we still have something to fight for. We still have a country that’s worth saving.’

Curry and Santos will go head-to-head in a June 2024 primary – if the current congressman makes it that long without being expelled.

On the left, Zak Malamad, the founder of Next 50, a group that raises money for candidates under 50 years old, Will Murphy, an attorney and professor focused on restoring SALT deductions and gun reform, Josh Lafazan, a member of the Nassau County Legislature, and Anna Kaplan, a former state senator, have all announced runs in the district.
