Red fire ants are on the march – they reached the United States from South America in the early 1930s and they’ve now been spotted in Europe.

They’re one of the world’s most invasive species – and the UK could be next on the invasion itinerary.

The welcome mat is unlikely to be deployed, because as one very brave animal expert reveals – they attack aggressively in swarms and will not hesitate to sting multiple times.

The fire ant (solenopsis invicta) is tiny, but packs a punch, biting into skin with its mandibles, then stinging once attached.

Coyote Peterson filmed himself walking barefoot through a nest of fire ants for the Brave Wilderness YouTube channel, to demonstrate what they’re capable of, with his feet receiving around 500 stings during the onslaught.

Coyote, who’s from Ohio, explains that fire ants inject a neurotoxic venom that ‘immediately leaves their victim feeling as if they’ve stepped into a pool of lava’.

The fire ant is ‘one of the most formidable little biological landmines that exists on the entire planet’, he says before putting his feet into the firing line.

The video does not make for easy viewing, with Coyote screaming and grunting in pain as the fire ants run riot over around his ankles and toes. And in between the toes, a sensitive area that he says is ‘the worst’ for pain.

He describes the pain as ‘so intense’, adding: ‘Fire ants are incredibly mighty. They’re destroying my feet.’

Within minutes the stings begin to ‘welt up’.

It’s not long before Coyote reaches the threshold of what he can endure and brushes the ants off with a feature duster.

Sitting on a chair afterwards, Coyote reveals that he took around 450 to 500 stings and that both of his feet are in ‘absolute agony’.

Fourteen hours later, and ‘pustules have come out in full force’ over his feet.

What should you do if you’re stung by fire ants?

First, pour cold water over the sting site, says Coyote, and wash dirt, dust and debris off. Then apply first aid such as ‘Sting Kill’, which offers fast relief.

Coyote adds that very few people have an allergic reaction to fire ant stings but he cautions to ‘stay in tune with how your body is reacting to the venom’.

He adds: ‘If you feel your throat tightening up, or you’re really losing control of the situation, seek medical help.’

Dozens of Brits have been pictured queueing up from 7am to secure a sunbathing spot at the Spanish resort where ITV‘s Benidorm is filmed.

The Sol Pelicanos Ocas hotel, which is called The Solana in the show, has been playing host to real-life drama as tourists compete for the best spot.

Frequented by the likes of the fictional grandmother Madge Harvey in the popular sitcom, the resort is now seeing sunbed wars play out between British tourists.

Holidaymakers pulled up chairs to wait as long as two hours to secure loungers, sprinting to claim them as soon as the pool opened at 9am, The Sun reports.

And now staff are cracking down on sunbed hoggers, warning sunseekers that their belongings could be thrown in lost property if they leave them to reserve a bed.

They have been putting notices on empty loungers, warning guests ‘it is not allowed to reserve sunbeds with towels or other belongings’.

Guest Guy Gibson, 46, from Newcastle, said that trying to relax at the hotel has been a ‘nightmare’ amid the sunbed crackdown.

‘All day long we’ve got to keep an eye on the beds and watch out for the ‘fun police’.

‘Even if you’re in the pool they try to take your towels.’

It is just the latest example of rules being brought in to tackle the so-called sunbed wars, which have been taking place across the Med this summer.

Footage published today showed families, including young children, racing out of the gates at another resort in Benidorm – as VIP loungers watched on in hysterics.

Tourists carrying towels and bathing gear sprinted past one another to make sure they secured the prime spot after the doors were opened to the Spanish resort’s pool first thing in the early morning.

Last week, MailOnline revealed how sunbed wars have become so intense at one hotel on the Costa del Sol that they have introduced a parking ticket style system – with towels left on beds unattended removed after a time limit.

Staff at the hotel, which has seen tourists go to extreme lengths to secure a sun lounger, have brought in new measures to curb the madness.

Guests at the Estival Torrequebrada in Malaga, who have often paid thousands to enjoy a break, have been warned they can no longer leave towels as a marker on a sunbed to claim it for a whole day.

Management instead began leaving cards on sunbeds with towels, handbags and other personal belongings on them, warning they will be removed after 45 minutes if they remain unoccupied.

At the nearby three-star Parasol Garden hotel, Britons are being given the green light to ‘grab’ a sunbed only when a whistle has been blown by staff.

Meanwhile at a resort in Tenerife, tourists have been spotted reserving sunbeds at 6.30am – three-and-a-half hours before the hotel pool opens.

As sunbed war season grips the continent, locals have had to take matters into their own hands.

In Benidorm, residents were seen erecting parasols in the dark in front of the ocean, while Greek coastal crusaders have declared a sunbed war on British tourist hotspots, pledging to fight back against the ‘abusive occupation’ of beaches.

The so-called ‘Towel Movement’ was set up in Paros by jaded residents, tired of not being able to find a free space on beaches due to aggressive sunbed firms.

They argue that illegal operators have been rinsing holidaymakers, who are paying over the odds to secure a spot – and leaving nowhere for locals to go.

Nearly 38.5million tourists visited Spain in the first six months of 2023 – and these were predominantly, British, German and French travellers.

A point-of-view (POV) video showing a top head chef at work has cooked up a feast of clicks on YouTube.

Footage recorded at Fallow restaurant in St James’s, London, by co-founder Jack Croft has racked up nearly four million views.

Jack filmed the POV footage using a 4K GoPro camera during a busy Friday lunchtime, with viewers able to witness how he adds the finishing touches to dishes and guides his team.

Some of the dishes being prepared include rare-breed pork with nduja cabbage; the Fallow dairy cow burger; and the restaurant’s signature cod’s head with sriracha butter sauce.

The pace is frenetic, with sauces distributed, cuts of meat heated up and tweaks made to presentation in a matter of seconds.

But Jack – who co-founded Fallow with chef William Murray and entrepreneur James Robson – never loses his cool.

And it’s something that viewers have been quick to notice.

YouTube user and chef ‘MrMrutube1987’ commented: ‘To see a kitchen with zero anger and zero shouting and 100 per cent teamwork really makes me wish I was in a different kitchen. You’ve got this kitchen down to perfection. Really great job.’

And chef ‘randysavage5989’ wrote: ‘I’ve worked in many kitchens in my 15 years’ experience. Eight minutes in and I can tell you this chef has a level of professionalism that many claim [to have] but few possess. He speaks to his people with respect and authority.

‘He utilises his own chain of command to institute changes before going to oversee that change.

‘I’d love to work in this kitchen.’

‘It is an honest insight into how the Fallow kitchen is run – we didn’t think it would make for good content if it felt inauthentic. The team would feel tense and viewers would see straight through it.’

British 19-year-old ‘is secretly filmed having sex by one of two Israeli teens she invited back to her hotel room’ on Greek island as cops hunt suspects

  • On Tuesday the woman brought back two men to her Rhodes hotel room

A 19-year-old British woman has claimed she was secretly filmed having sex by one of two Israeli teenagers she invited back to her hotel room in Rhodes.

Local police said the teenager was staying at a hotel in Theologos while on holiday with two of her friends, according to Greek media.

On Tuesday at around 2.45am she reportedly invited two 19-year-old men she had met two days earlier at a bar in the notorious party resort of Faliraki back to her room.

While engaging in consensual sex with one of the Israelis, the other covertly filmed her, she claimed.

Upon discovering the illegal recording, the woman confronted the teens who then escaped.

Police are hunting down the perpetrators and the investigation is ongoing.

It comes weeks after a 20-year-old British tourist was allegedly raped in the sea during a summer holiday on the same island after she visited a beach with a man she had met online.

The Briton, who has not been named, told police a 23-year-old Albanian man raped her after they went for a swim at Glystra beach on the east coast of the island.

The young woman claimed the man, who she had been speaking to online for two weeks before meeting in person, then took her back to her hotel room in Kiotari where he attacked her and tried to rape her a second time, reported the Vradini newspaper.

The Albanian man, who has not been named, has since been arrested by police on the Greek island on suspicion of rape and attempted rape. He denies the charges.

In a separate case days later on the island of Crete, two British teenagers were arrested after a British woman told police they raped her and filmed the act after a drunken night out.

The 24-year-old unidentified Briton claimed the two 19-year-olds took advantage of her inebriated state in her hotel room in Rethymno.

She alleged the pair, who are also British, filmed the sexual assault, according to Greek press.

It is not clear whether the trio knew each other before the night leading up to the alleged rape.

Greek police yesterday arrested the two unidentified teens on suspicion of rape, while the 24-year-old was taken to a medical examiner to undergo tests.

British paddleboarder Scott Seddon was filmed laughing and joking with a close friend as he emerged from the sea – just minutes before he was struck by lightning and killed.

The keen sportsman, 26, died shortly after emerging from the water during what appeared to be clear weather over the Greek island of Rhodes.

The video shows Scott looking athletic and clearly very happy – and gives no hint that he was in any apparent danger with an earlier storm seeming to have passed.

It was released to MailOnline by his devastated family who want it made public to show that Scott had left the sea when the incident happened and was not acting in any way recklessly.

Scott’s heartbroken mother said he had been having ‘the time of his life’ before his tragic death in the freak accident on Monday afternoon, when, she said, ‘God just decided to take him’.

Initial reports from Greece had suggested that Scott died while out to sea during an electrical storm at Agia Agathi as his close friend Anna Vidamour, 24, begged him to come in.

But Scott’s mother and father, who were in the ambulance as paramedics tried to save his life, said an earlier storm seemed to have passed and sunlight was breaking through the clouds.

They pointed out that the video shows there was no hint of an imminent lightning strike as he returned to the beach on Monday afternoon.

His family insist experienced boarder Scott knew the dangers of the sea or weather in Greece where they used to live for years before coming home to Liverpool.

His father Stephen, 68, said: ‘We have lived in Greece for the last 30 years.

‘He knows the water and respects the water. He wasn’t some silly tourist who get on a board to go somewhere dangerous.

‘He was laughing coming out of the water. They put the canoes on the shore and they were standing on the stand and they hugged.

‘He was not in danger and was not dragged out of the water.’

Scott's mother described him as a 'beautiful' and 'flamboyant' man who loved the sea. 'He would catch octopus and give it to the locals,' she said

Scott, who lived with his sister Layla and father Steve in a large bungalow in Liverpool, was described by close friends as a ‘lovely guy’ and ‘really popular’.

The avid sportsman, who had trained to be a civil engineer and worked in the building trade, spoke Greek and was a regular visitor to the family’s holiday home.

‘He wasn’t a tourist and he knew and respected the water,’ his dad said.

‘The locals loved him and he went to school there.

‘We are devastated. We will never get over losing him.’

Anna, 24, from Belfast, who was close to Scott but not dating him – he was soon to go on another trip to visit his girlfriend – had taken the video just five minutes before he was struck.

Scott’s mother Jackie, 56, told MailOnline: ‘They got out of the water and they were so happy that they had come out of the water.

‘They were having a laugh and he asked his friend to take the video as there was no danger.

‘They put the board down and the lighting struck him on the back of the neck.

‘Scott did not have any metal on him – just two little earrings.

‘It looked like the storm had gone, the danger was finished.

‘It was just a freak accident.

‘He wasn’t on the board and it was not anywhere near him.

‘When Scott fell, he fell into the water. He was too heavy for Anna to lift so a Brazilian man came to help.’

She added: ‘My son went out having the time of his life, and God just decided to take him.

‘Lightning struck him in an instant. It was a terrible, sad thing that happened.

‘I texted him not to walk back and told him a storm was coming, so he was aware.’

Jackie and Stephen had come to pick him up to take him home but then saw an ambulance.

Fighting back tears, his mother said: ‘As we got closer to the ambulance, I saw my son’s foot.

‘I saw Anna and she said: “He’s been hit”.

‘I was thinking he had been hit by a car or boat. Stephen was on the floor in the ambulance crying: “It’s my son”.’

The family in the ambulance and Stephen helped give CPR to his son – whom the family nicknamed Elvis – before they got to hospital.

Speaking in the family’s large bungalow, Jackie said: ‘They worked on him for an hour.

‘They gave him adrenaline. I begged them: “Please give him one more”.

‘So they gave him one more. They tried and they weren’t going to give up.

‘But he had gone. I asked the doctor if they had found water in his lungs because I didn’t know he’d been struck by lightning.’

She added: ‘Scott was fearless. He was one of a kind, he was flamboyant. A beautiful blond boy.

‘He would catch octopus and give it to the locals.’

His sister Layla, 24, said: ‘By the time they came out of the water it was sunny.

‘When they were on their boards, they saw a bit of lightning but by the time they got in, it was in the distance, it had already passed.

‘There was no crazy water or lightning. The danger had gone.’

His sister added: ‘I am just numb over losing him.

‘It doesn’t feel real. Everyone adored him.’

The couple also released new pictures of Scott and his sister as children in tribute.

Scott was planning to go surfing with his girlfriend as well as running the bulls in Spain.

Philip Schofield begged a Youtube star not to post a video that showed him having a meal with his This Morning lover after the shamed presenter warned it could ‘ruin my career’, it has been claimed.

The video shows Youtuber Jack Jones in what appears to be a restaurant as he pops confetti to celebrate reaching one million followers.

Schofield  can be seen in the background at a table with a younger man, who are both startled by the noise.

In a video shared on Twitter, Mr Jones claimed: ‘After I did the video he begged me not to put the video up because he said, “It could ruin my career” and I said, “How could it ruin your career?” And he said he didn’t want to get into it.’

Schofield left ITV earlier this month after admitting to an affair with a younger male colleague at This Morning.

ITV bosses are facing further questions about what they knew of the relationship.  One source at the channel said: ‘This is unravelling fast and there is no evidence to suggest it will come to an end any time soon.

‘There are a lot of people out there who feel wronged by ITV and they now have the confidence to have their say.

‘The house of cards appears to be collapsing – it is anybody’s guess where this ends now.’

It comes after former This Morning presenter Eamonn Holmes accused ITV bosses of orchestrating a ‘total cover-up’ of Schofield’s affair with his younger lover, saying those in authority ‘had to know’ about the secret relationship.

It has been claimed that the younger lover received a financial settlement from the broadcaster.

The Daily Mail has been told that he was given a payment following the end of the on-off relationship, which Schofield described as ‘unwise but not illegal’.

ITV has repeatedly declined to comment on the alleged pay-off or deny it.

There were no comments from a representative of the presenter in response to the claims.

He quit the channel on Friday after he revealed to the Daily Mail that he had lied about the affair to sister paper The Mail on Sunday.

But a source claims that the money was handed to the man, who, after he declared his love for Schofield at an awards ceremony in January 2020, was shunted to another of the network’s daytime programmes, Loose Women.

He no longer works there.

ITV insiders said that at some level, bosses must have known about any payment.

One added: ‘There have been numerous pay-offs at ITV and they have always had to be arranged and sanctioned by people of some seniority.’

Brit, 26, is killed by lightning ‘while his girlfriend filmed him swimming in the sea’ in Rhodes

A British tourist has died after being struck by lightning while his girlfriend was reportedly filming him swimming in the sea in Greece

The 26-year-old man tragically died this afternoon while at the beach in the Agia Agathi area of Rhodes.

Emergency services rushed the man to the shore and desperately tried to save his life but he did not survive.

A 47-year-old local football player Brazilian Wander Machado, who attempted to save the Brit, told Greek outlet Rodiaki: ‘As soon as I got close to him, I saw that he was face down in the water and his face was bruised.

‘I immediately knew that every second was crucial and started pulling him to the shore.’

It’s understood that other tourists had urged the man to leave the water when he encountered difficulties at around 1.30pm local time (11.30am BST).

His horrified girlfriend along with other beachgoers reportedly started calling for help after he got into trouble in the water.

He was pulled out of the water by those on the beach.

While Rodiaki reported that he had been paddleboarding, other news outlets claim he had been swimming at the time of the incident.

The witness who plays for Agios Georgios Malonas football team added: ‘I was worried that the same thing would happen to me as it was still raining but I didn’t stop.

‘The rescuers arrived shortly afterwards and performed all the resuscitation procedures to keep him alive. Unfortunately, I found out a little later that he didn’t make it.’

The man was taken to the Archangelos Health Centre, where emergency services frantically tried to resuscitate him but sadly he could not be saved.

An investigation by the Central Port Authority of Rhodes has been launched according to the local news outlet.

At the time of the tragic accident, the area off the Greek island was reportedly experiencing poor weather and severe thunderstorms.

An FCDO spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Rhodes and are in contact with local authorities.’
