Conor McGregor’s tense Ultimate Fighter showdown with Michael Chandler lasted 30 MINUTES… as ‘Notorious’ tells his new rival ‘I’m gonna PIN YOU’ on his UFC comeback

Michael Chandler has revealed he and Conor McGregor‘s tense showdown in the opening Ultimate Fighter episode lasted for 30 minutes as they were made to wait in a gym during filming.

The two fighters are leading teams in the new series before they then fight each other later this year – a date and venue are still to be revealed.

It will be the first time McGregor has been in the octagon since badly breaking his leg in a fight with Dustin Poirier nearly two years ago but judging by the opening scene in the new series, the Irishman hasn’t lost a shred of self-belief.

McGregor and Chandler met face-to-face in a strangely awkward scene; McGregor paced around in a sharp suit, seemingly unsure whether to goad Chandler while the American tried to keep his cool and stay out of what he later called ‘verbal ju-jitsu’.

‘What was the Mystic Mike prediction?’ McGregor asked Chandler with a smirk.

McGregor told Chandler 'I'm gonna pin you' when they eventually fight later this year

McGregor told Chandler ‘I’m gonna pin you’ when they eventually fight later this year

‘Second round KO,’ Chandler responds. ‘Hit you with the hard ones in the first.’

‘Keep dreaming bud, keep dreaming,’ McGregor retorts. ‘Have I told you what weight it is gonna be? 185. You’ll do what you’re told. I am going to pin you. This is my game. This is my game forever.’

Speaking after the show was broadcast, Chandler lifted the lid on what it was like to come face-to-face with his tetchy opponent.

‘Conor and I had met, we shared a press conference before. When he fought Poirier, I fought Dan Hooker,’ Chandler said. ‘They said go and wait in the gym, I stood there for 10 mins and then they sent Conor in there and leave us for 30 minutes.’

For his part, Chandler still looked to get at McGregor. In an unseen slip later shown on ESPN after the episode, he told McGregor: ‘It’s the pressure you can’t deal with – the fight pressure.’

But Chandler revealed he didn’t feel a need to taunt McGregor excessively.

‘What do you do? Start talking trash-talking, insulting each other? Conor and I have a ton of respect for each other.

‘He is a wordsmith, so comfortable in that realm. I don’t think Conor wanted to come in spitting venom like he usually does. What is he going to say? I’m not going into the show thinking I am going to win the verbal ju-jitsu match.

‘Sometimes you have to lead with humility and show them they are not going to win that.’

McGregor still toyed with Chandler over the weight they will fight at.

‘It’s a good fight,’ McGregor said. ‘Have I told you what weight it is gonna be? 185? See what happens. Stay ready. 205? Good with 205? You’d make 155?’

Chandler said after the show that McGregor, 34, might not be able to carry the extra mass that he is clearly carrying.

‘He’s gonna slim down a little bit, I am sure,’ Chandler said. ‘You go into a training camp and you are gonna lose some excess mass. He has definitely put on some mass.

‘Conor and I are about the same size. He picks the right photos for his Instagram feed. Can he carry that mass well? Can he be fast, reactive? It remains to be seen, he is definitely a lot bigger.’

NATURE

One Medicine: How Understanding Animals Can Save Your Life

by Dr Matt Morgan (Simon & Schuster £16.99, 288pp)

Feel this!’ said Matt Morgan’s ex-patient, offering his wrist. The doctor felt for a pulse — and there was none.

The man, who Morgan had treated for a bad heart condition, should by rights have been dead.

Yet there he was, meeting Morgan after a talk the doctor had given. The answer to the mystery was that other medics had later fitted a machine inside his body, which pumped his blood smoothly and continuously, rather than in spurts like the heart.

Did you know that giraffes have helped prevent fighter pilots from blacking out? A new book reveals the healing powers of animals

Hence the lack of a pulse. The machine mimics the way a whale’s heart works. The smooth flow is better for critically ill people.

We have long known the medical benefits of learning from other species. Morgan’s book examines the different ways treatments for humans have been influenced by animals. Did you know that giraffes have helped prevent fighter pilots from blacking out?

The animals’ legs have super-thick skin to push blood back upwards as they run — otherwise the forces sending it downwards would result in too little going to the brain, depriving it of oxygen.

The G-forces in a plane have the same effect on the pilot, meaning they can crash and be killed. So special ‘pneumatic’ trousers have been invented, which use pressure to push blood back up towards the pilot’s brain.

Meanwhile, a crane’s legs contain some very clever plumbing that keeps the bird warm as it stands in freezing cold water. The veins carrying cold blood upwards are right next to arteries carrying warmer blood down from the body, so allowing a heat exchange to take place. What’s more, the process reverses in summer to prevent overheating.

The same principle is now used on patients in intensive care: if their temperature is too high, tubes with cold water flowing through them are attached to their skin. Those recovering from hypothermia get warmer water.

Are you scared of injections? The mosquito might be coming to your rescue. When the little so-and-so bites you (only the females do, incidentally), the reason you don’t feel it is because of the mosquito’s curiouslyshaped mouth.

This is an outer tube containing two jagged jaws either side of a central needle. First the tube touches your skin, then the jaws, and only then the needle. The insect repeats this sequence hundreds of times, until the whole structure is under your skin.

This not only spreads out the force needed to bite you, but the mouth vibrates as it goes, so activating your skin sensors rather than your pain sensors.

A team in Japan is working on a syringe that copies this design, opening up the possibility of pain-free injections.

Turtles have a thin membrane in their rectum that lets them breathe through their backsides.

Sex gets its usual coverage. Until the 1960s, human pregnancy tests involved frogs — you injected a urine sample into the animal’s back, and if it laid eggs by the next day, the human concerned was pregnant.

The same principle of giraffes' legs are now being used on patients. This is the same for other animals such as the crane and kangaroos

Kangaroos have three vaginas — two for conception, each linked to a uterus (this is why the male has a two-pronged penis), and one for giving birth.

Whales, meanwhile, favour the menage a trois: ‘Two males work together, one holding the other upright to aid the insertion of its penis into the female.’

But the most interesting story was that of Chris, a North Sea diver whose oxygen ran out while working on an underwater pipe. Colleagues on board a ship saw on video cameras his body lying on the seabed, twitching and then lying still.

Chris spent 37 minutes without breathing before they reached him and took him to a diving bell. Incredibly, he survived.

‘You do know it’s OK, don’t you?’ he told them afterwards, talking of the death that everyone, Chris included, had assumed would be his fate.

‘It’s just like drifting off to sleep. I was sad for a bit. I was cold and got a bit numb, but then it was just like falling asleep.’

UFC flyweight fighter Tim Elliott has accused his ex-wife Gina Mazany of cheating on him with his friend and teammate Kevin Croom throughout their marriage – including on their wedding night, it’s been reported by The New York Post.

The report found Elliott took to Twitter to make his accusations – posting a picture of Mazany reading wedding vows to his daughter Sterling (who he had through a past marriage) while Croom holds a microphone for her.

‘You want to see something gross? This is my “wife” reading vows to my daughter on our “wedding” night,’ Elliott wrote.

‘The guy holding the microphone was my “friend/teammate” my wife cheated on me with this guy the same night! and they have had a relationship our entire “marriage.”‘

The Post reports Elliott also says that he is no longer married to Mazany. He also says Mazany and Croom are currently together. Dailymail.com has reached out to their representatives for comment.

Elliott says he found out about the alleged infidelity through text messages sent by Mazany to a friend, according to the report.

He also says Mazany later confessed to him.

He also says that the wedding night cheating happened as he went back home to put his daughter to sleep.

Mazany didn’t go back with him afterwards due to ‘friends there from out of state’.

Mazany has deleted her Instagram account recently. However, there are a number of posts of the former couple still up on Elliott’s page.

Both Mazany and Croom were cut by the UFC last April following losses – but they have since pursued other promotions.

Elliott has not fought in the UFC since his appearance in UFC 272 where he defeated Tagir Ulanbekov by unanimous decision.

He’s next scheduled to face Victor Altamirano on June 3.
