He’s on the edge! Moment a fight breaks out at Brazil’s famous ‘cliff-hanging’ selfie spot after one man’s photo gets spoiled

  • The unnamed pair fought at the top of Pedra do Telegrafo, in Rio De Janeiro
  • One man pushed the other after he accidentally got in the way of his photoshoot

Two men risked life and limb and got into a fight over a photo at one of the world’s most famous selfie spots.

The two unnamed men got into a scrap at the famous cliff-hanging illusion spot at the top of Pedra do Telegrafo, in the western part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after one man got in the way of another’s photoshoot on Sunday.

The site is famous for its Instagram-worthy images, featuring a giant boulder where people can pose for a picture that from certain angles gives the impression that the person is on the edge of an abyss.

In reality, the rock is just a few inches off the ground.

The furious poser got up from his hanging position and pushed the other man after he seemingly got in the way of the photoshoot, before he was kicked and put into a headlock position.

The man who seemingly started the fight was quickly put into a headlock

The pair quickly tumbled a short distance down the hill as the man who appeared to have started the fight was thrown to the floor.

He can then be spotted putting his hand out and asking the other man to stop, as other tourists come over to break the fight up.

Both men then got up and returned to safety while continuing to bicker as the footage cuts.

The Pedra do Telegrafo, located at the summit of Morro de Guaratiba, is situated in the Pedra Branca State Park, within the sector of wild beaches in Barra de Guaratiba.

Its name originates from the time of World War II when the area served as a military station.

The 2.2-mile hike up to the summit takes visitors to an altitude of about 1160 ft above sea level.

It is one of the most popular photoshoot destinations in the world.

At time of publication, #pedradotelegrafo has been included in over 165,000 posts on Instagram.

Erik ten Hag has urged Manchester United to stick together as they try to weather a storm following four defeats in five games.

United have lost three in a row and go to Burnley on Saturday night in danger of suffering four straight defeats for the first time since Louis van Gaal‘s second season in 2015.

Ten Hag insists that the key to turning the corner after such a poor start to the season is maintaining unity.

Asked if he is surprised by the scale of the challenge, he replied: ‘No. It’s my second year. I know it’s not always going up, you will have your gaps and you get stronger from it as long as you stay together.

‘That’s what we’re doing. The dressing-room, all the staff, coaches, medical, everyone is united and at United you fight.’

There have been concerns over dressing-room leaks about squad unrest at Old Trafford, but Ten Hag added: ‘I don’t know if it’s a leak but I know opinion, I know my players. Everyone can make suggestions, we are okay with it.’

United go to Turf Moor desperately in need of a win to lift morale. ‘At United, you have to win every game so it doesn’t change anything,’ said Ten Hag.

‘As always, it’s about how we play against Burnley. There’s no easy games, definitely not against Burnley. We know how intense they play football, we know their approach. I like the approach from them, the adventure, high intensity and dynamic in their game, so we have to play our best.’

Anthony Joshua backs Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Lionel Messi in a FIGHT, as he reveals he’d love to see rivals square-up in Misfits boxing bout

  • Anthony Joshua backs Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Lionel Messi in a fight
  • The former boxing champion was asked to name two non-boxers to compete
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast ‘It’s All Kicking Off’

Anthony Joshua would love to see Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo go head-to-head in a Misfits boxing match – and while declaring it to be a close contest, he’s backed the Portuguese star to emerge victorious.

The British heavyweight boxer, 33, is currently enjoying some time off after beating Robert Helenius via a seventh-round KO at the 02 Arena in London last month.

And the big football fan has said that he would love to see two icons of the team sport go head-to-head to continue their personal rivalry in the fighting arena.

In an interview posted on YouTube, Joshua was asked to name two non-boxers he’d love to see fight based on personalities alone, and responded with ‘Ronaldo versus Messi’, taking one of modern football’s fiercest rivalries into a new battleground.

When asked who wins, Joshua said ‘Ronaldo’, before adding: ‘I love Messi and Ronaldo. Messi’s got that vision though. I can imagine him bobbing and weaving, angles, but yeah, it’d be tough. They’re both as good as each other.’

Joshua said he would not fight Ronaldo because he has 'respect' for the Portuguese icon

Messi's 'vision' would make him a difficult opponent in a possible fighting match

Ronaldo and Messi have a long-standing rivalry in football which could cross to a new arena

Joshua refused to name a non-boxer that he would like to meet in the ring in a cross-over fight, saying ‘I got no beef with no one’.

When faced with the idea of facing the Portuguese icon was put to him, Joshua said: ‘Nah, I respect Ronaldo.’

The suggestion of a hypothetical fight between two other football rivals was floated as well – Romelu Lukaku versus Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

In response to that, Joshua said: ‘Yeah, they don’t like each other anyway, do they? That would be a bad boy fight too, to be fair.’

Lukaku has made a name for himself with Serie A side Inter Milan, and has joined Roma on loan from Chelsea for this season, while Ibrahimovic retired from football at the end of last season after a long career which saw him finish with AC Milan.

Joshua, a two-time world champion, is expected to face Deontay Wilder next in a mega-money bout in Saudi Arabia before the end of 2023.

Another proposed football fight was between Romelu Lukaku (L) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (R)

  • John was furious after KSI mocked Tommy and his older brother Tyson Fury
  • Security rushed in as a mass brawl broke out between the two teams on stage

Tommy Fury’s father, John, erupted on stage while supporting his son during Tuesday’s press conference.

John was seen flipping tables and shouting at KSI after the YouTube-turned-boxer threw shade on the Fury name.

KSI – who will go toe-to-toe with Tommy at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday, October 14 – was heard mocking the Gypsy family.

KSI’s business partner Logan Paul – who will be fighting Dillon Danis on the same evening – was also heard criticising the Fury’s before John kicked off.

John rose from his chair and shouted ‘the Fury’s are the best fighters in the world’ to cut Logan off mid-way through his speech.

John continued by saying: ‘The Fury’s dominate. We are the best men in the world. We will fight anybody in our way’.

To which KSI responded: ‘Why is Tyson Fury ducking Oleksandr Usyk then? Why is he ducking Oleksandr Usyk?’.

John was furious with KSI and snapped back: ‘Full of s***. Full of s***. Shut up ‘mother******. Come fight me now instead of talking all this bull**** about people’s f****** b*******.

He continued: ‘We are fighting men. My son [pointing to Tommy] will fight him now [pointing to KSI] and then fight anyone else who wants it. Now, lets get the f****** ball rolling.

‘Get the cake and shove it up your a*** hole before I do it. All these little f****** kids. I am a machine. Me! Can anyone question who I am here? I will take them’.

John finished by knocking the microphones over and flipping his table before kicking KSI’s table over too.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer was furious and jumped to his feet to square up to Tommy’s father.

As a result, security rushed in as both teams went gunning for each other.

Liver cancer patients are being spared overnight hospital stays and a painful recovery thanks to a procedure that injects tumour-fighting beads through the wrist.

The beads – called microspheres – kill cancer cells by lodging in blood vessels near the tumour where they give off small amounts of radiation for several days.

Previously they reached the liver via a long tube inserted through the groin, which involved an overnight hospital stay and a greater risk of internal bleeding. Patients also had to lie flat for six hours afterwards to avoid damaging blood vessels in the pelvic area.

But with the new procedure, which uses a long tube inserted in the wrist, patients can return home within two hours.

‘Patients would much rather be up and sitting in a chair straight afterwards than be lying down and unable to move,’ says Dr Pavan Najran, consultant interventional radiologist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester who has been performing the procedure. ‘We hope more hospitals pick this up soon.’

About 6,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with liver cancer every year ¿ mostly aged over 60

About 6,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with liver cancer every year – mostly aged over 60

About 6,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with liver cancer every year – mostly aged over 60. Certain conditions can make you more likely to develop it, such as hepatitis, gallstones and diabetes.

But around half of cases are thought to be linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity and smoking. If the disease is found early, surgeons can cut out the tumour. Most patients have chemotherapy to kill remaining cancer cells. But those deemed too unwell for chemotherapy or find that their cancer returns will then be offered radiotherapy.

With other cancers, a machine delivers beams of radiation to the affected area. But with liver cancer, a procedure known as selective internal radiation therapy, or SIRT, injects microspheres directly into the very small blood vessels that supply the liver tumours, releasing radiation that kills cancer cells.

‘It means the radiation is more targeted, reducing the risk of damaging nearby areas – such as the kidneys or bladder,’ says Dr Najran. ‘We can also use higher doses of radiation because we’re not worried about affecting other organs.’

The traditional method of threading a thin tube called a catheter through the main artery in the groin – the femoral artery – until it reaches the liver, comes with risks. Moving the legs and groin can damage the sensitive blood vessel, causing major bleeding that requires a further operation.

‘It can be difficult to spot bleeding in the groin as the artery is deep within the body, so you don’t always get the distinctive bruising,’ says Dr Najran. ‘If you don’t spot it quickly it can spread, leading to life-threatening complications.’

But with the new procedure, doctors insert the tube into the radial artery in the wrist, which branches off to meet other vessels that supply the liver. Studies show this can slash the risk of major bleeding in half. And three-quarters of patients prefer it, according to surveys.

Prior to the operation, patients are given a medication to widen their blood vessels, making it easier for doctors to insert the tube.

When the two-hour procedure is over, patients can walk around and even use their hands. They are discharged later that day.

One patient to benefit is Heather Norgrove, 74, from the Midlands.

The grandmother- of-two was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer in 2013. Treatment was initially successful, but years later a scan showed it had returned and reached her liver.

Last year, specialists referred Heather to The Christie for SIRT treatment where she underwent the traditional method, involving the artery in her groin. ‘The worst bit was lying there for hours,’ she says. ‘I was desperate to go to the toilet and I couldn’t do anything.’

Last month Heather was offered the chance to have the treatment via the radial artery in her wrist.

‘It was amazing,’ she says. ‘I got straight up afterwards. I was free to have something to eat and the side effects were minimal – my hand went numb and I had pins and needles, but that quickly passed.

‘It was definitely worth it for the freedom.’

Tyler Perry has vowed to help a 93-year-old grandmother of 40 who says property developers are trying to force her from the house that has been in her family since the Civil War.

Josephine Wright’s bungalow in Hilton Head, Carolina sits in the middle of an area being developed by Bailey Point Investment.

They wanted to buy her land, but she refused: they have since sued her, claiming parts of her property are on their land.

‘I’ve been pretty much a fighter all my life,’ she said. ‘It puzzled me at first. But then it got me angry.’

Perry, the billionaire film producers and studio owner based in Atlanta, Georgia, saw the local news report about her case and has now said he wants to help.

Billionaire film producer Tyler Perry, seen in November, has vowed to help Josephine Wright

Perry wrote on Twitter: ”I’ve pretty much been a fighter all my life’ said 93 year old Josephine Wright. Well, that makes two of us.

‘Ms. Wright, please tell where to show up and what you need to help you fight.’

Film producer Will Packer commented: ‘I also got Ms. Josephine’s back. Count me in TP.’

Singer Fantasia agreed, adding: ‘I will stand with you as well Tyler.’

Wright told WSAV that the property had been her family’s home for generations.

‘This house means it’s a home, a place where I want to be at this age,’ she said.

It has been in the family since just after the Civil War.

Her husband was a Gullah Geechee Islander, descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast along the Carolinas. Many came from rice-growing regions of West Africa.

His relatives were escaped slaves and were freed by Union soldiers.

Bailey Point has started construction of a 147-unit site, set over 29 acres.

They wanted to buy her land: when she said no, she claimed a campaign of harassment begun. She said her tires were slashed, trash thrown on her property and a snake hung from one of her windows.

Bailey Point says Wright is blocking their construction progress, and they have sued her, accusing her of having her porch on their land.

Wright already paid to move a shed, which cost about $1,900, and got rid of a satellite dish.

Former State Representative Bakari Sellers is now working with Wright’s legal team, and is asking people to call the developer and lawmakers to help Wright keep her property.

‘We sent a letter two weeks ago simply asking the developer to communicate. Simply asking the developer to speak to us. Speak to her. Just to have a common conversation about how to move forward,’ said Sellers.

‘I think more disrespectful than a no is a non-response.’

Wright has a lawyer and is fighting the lawsuit, but her family is asking for help paying the legal bills for that battle. A GoFundMe has been set up to help Josephine with her legal expenses.

‘We are very big on generational wealth, or trying to accrue it,’ explained Sellers.

‘When you talk about poverty in our communities it’s because we don’t have land, and when we do, people want to take it away.

‘There are a lot of people to pick on. Pick on me.

‘Don’t pick on a 93-year-old woman who has lived her life doing nothing wrong.’

Wright’s neighbors are now involved, working to protect her and the land.

‘We don’t have the right to change what has already been approved; that ship has sailed. We can’t change the zoning,’ said Kelly LeBlanc, part of the newly formed Jonesville Preservation Society.

‘The town is looking very closely at the permitting, at the approval phase. The town is making sure it is done to the letter of the law.’

Wright said she intended to fight to keep her home.

‘I guess they figured I would become so unnerved with the harassment that I would say take it. But they don’t know me. I am here to fight for what I have,’ she said.

‘I don’t want to say anything that can be used against me, but I think they are unscrupulous and greedy and they want all the property they can get their hands on.’

Perry is known for his generosity, particularly in the Atlanta area.

In February, he made a $2.75 million donation to assist low-income seniors with their property tax payments through the Invest Atlanta Partnership nonprofit.

He had already donated $750,000 for the first year to cover the back taxes and any increase in property taxes, and has pledged $500,000 each year over the next four years to ensure the residents don’t pay any more in such taxes.

Perry hosts annual food giveaways in time for Thanksgiving, and has helped out numerous organizations that have fallen victim to criminals.

His charitable efforts also include building a home for a great-grandmother of seven who lost everything in a fire; surprising kids with a trip to Disney World; and holding a camp quarantine at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Dillian Whyte has hit back at Eddie Hearn‘s claims that he ‘priced himself out’ of a rematch with Anthony Joshua

The pair were expected to face each other on August 12 but Hearn affirms that they were unable to come to an agreement on the financial side of the deal.

However, according to Whyte no such negotiations took place.

‘They’re talking rubbish,’ Whyte told The Sun in response to Hearn’s recent comments. ‘I haven’t turned down the fight.

‘All I got, after Eddie talked publicly and often about making me an offer to fight AJ, was a very short email late in the evening on Friday 2 June.

‘I absolutely 100 per cent want to fight AJ and called Eddie to discuss the offer but couldn’t get hold of him. I messaged him too. I didn’t hear back from him so I sent him an email to confirm I wanted the fight.

‘I didn’t turn down the offer or propose a counter-offer. All I did was ask normal questions on his three-line email so-called offer.

‘Even before I emailed, Eddie was already saying publicly that his offer was unacceptable. So, why make it in the first place?’

Joshua is now expected to face a different opponent on the same date while Whyte is left in limbo.

Hearn had promised the ‘Bodysnatcher’ a second fight with Joshua in the spring time after beating Jermaine Franklin.

Yet the Matchroom Boxing chief opted to go with the American instead.

After Joshua beat Franklin on points, the Whyte rematch was spoken about as a possible warm up fight ahead of AJ’s blockbuster showdown with Deontay Wilder in December.

But it is now looking more likely that he will box European heavyweight champion Agit Kabayel in two months’ time.

Whyte has since come out and declared that he is willing to accept Hearn’s terms but said that he doesn’t think Joshua and co are serious about making the fight.

When asked if he would accept the offer he’s been made during a recent appearance on talkSPORT. Whyte replied: ‘100 per cent, of course I would, I wanna fight AJ and beat him.’

In a clash for the ages between two of the world’s richest tech titans, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have vowed to throw it down in a cage fight in Las Vegas.

While Musk is by far the richer of the two and is both heavier and taller than his Meta counterpart, Zuckerberg poses a serious threat, thanks to his keen passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

The Facebook founder posted on his Instagram Stories asking Musk to ‘send me the location’ after Musk tweeted on Wednesday night bragging that he was ‘up for a cage match if he is’.

In response to an article by The Verge about the proposed fight between the two tech giants, Musk responded to the location by tweeting: ‘Vegas Octagon’.

The Octagon is the official competition mat and fenced-in design for Ultimate Fighting Championship cage fights.

The social media taunts – fittingly delivered on the respective platforms owned by the billionaires – set the stage for a Silicon Valley rumble that would dwarf the magnitude of the string of celebrity bouts that have been big hits in Las Vegas.

Analyzing both Musk and Zuckerberg across a more unorthodox tale of the tape, DailyMail.com sizes up the contest between the two.

Here, DailyMail.com compares the two tech titans in a typical tale of the tape

With Musk 12 years his senior, Zuckerberg would hope to be able to run rings round the Tesla chief.

Coming in at 5’7′ and weighing around 70kg, Zuckerberg is the lighter and more nimble of the two and has previously fought and won in jiu-jitsu matches.

Zuckerberg recently picked up two medals in a jiu-jitsu tournament and has said in the past that his diet is more vegetarian based.

He shared: ‘This year I’ve basically become a vegetarian since the only meat I’m eating is from animals I’ve killed myself.’

His go-to food is reportedly grilled chicken, which he eats for its high protein content.

On an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Musk has openly talked about his fitness regime and said: ‘The older I get, the harder [it is] to stay lean, that’s for sure.’

After word of the fight spread on social media, Musk tweeted: ‘I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids and throwing them in the air.’

Musk does have both height and weight on his side, with Total Shape estimating the billionaire weighs around 81kg and stands at 5’11’.

When it comes to his diet, he has claims he starts his day with octopus, a bowl of ice cream, eight oatmeal biscuits, and a donut. “I’d rather eat tasty food and live a shorter life,” he said.

With age on his side and the fact he already competes in fights, Zuckerberg remains favorite to outfight the more senior tech giant in Musk.

Zuckerberg replied on his Instagram story, sharing a screenshot of Musk's challenge, writing: 'Send me location.' The Meta CEO recently placed a jiu-jitsu tournament in May

Disciplines

A keen martial artist, Zuckerberg has shared pictures of himself winning Brazilian jiu jitsu tournaments onto his Instagram page.

Zuckerberg had competed and won medals at the BJJ Tour competition in Woodside, California, in May.

He wrote: ‘Competed in my first jiu jitsu tournament and won some medals for the Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu team.’

The Meta CEO walked away with a gold medal in the Nogi Master 1 White Belt Feather Weight Division and the Silver medal in the Gi Master 2 White Belt Feather Weight Division.

Previously, comedian, UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan hailed Zuckerberg as being a ‘f**king savage’ over his contest wins.

On his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, Musk said he had trained Kyokushin karate, taekwondo, judo and ‘Brazilian jiu-jitsu briefly’ throughout his life.

Musk has also shared a photo of himself fighting a sumo wrestler in the past.

After word of the fight spread on social media, Musk tweeted: ‘I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids and throwing them in the air.’

Based on this metric, Zuckerberg again remains a clear winner in the bout.

Net worth

Boasting a net worth well over double that of Zuckerberg, Musk is proving to be seemingly untouchable as the world’s richest man.

The Twitter CEO reclaimed the crown as the world’s richest person, knocking the boss of luxury goods giant LVMH Bernard Arnault off the top spot earlier this month.

Deriving most of his wealth from shares in Tesla, a rise in the value of the electric car company earlier this month keeps him firmly ahead of Zuckerberg who places 9 spots behind Musk – making Musk victorious over his octagon rival.

Meta vs Twitter

Musk took over control of the social media giant last year and so far has experienced highs and lows of running the site which boasts around 353 million annual users.

So far, he has dealt with a staffing crisis after 3,700 workers where laid off within a few days of him being appointed CEO.

They found out when they were unable to log in to their emails and work computers. Musk defended the layoffs saying he had no choice when the company was losing $4m a day.

As members of staff were cut, so too were the first users of the site who started to leave in droves.

Last month, an evaluation of the social media site showed that the company had hemorrhaged value, losing one-third of its worth since he took over.

Twitter's value is now just one-third of what it was when CEO Elon Musk purchased it in October, some $15 billion compared to its sticker price of $45 billion last year

On the other hand, Meta, which includes sites including Facebook and Instagram, boasts global monthly users totaling over 3.7 billion – much more than Twitter levels.

While Meta, previously known as Facebook, suffered a large stock plummet when it was first announced and went through a tricky transition, it has remained a powerhouse of social media.

On this front, Zuckerberg, who is largely responsible for the growth of social media with his site Facebook, is a clear winner.

Companies

Zuckerberg’s Meta is considered one of the world’s most valuable companies and is among the top ten largest publicly traded corporations in the United States.

With over 77,000 employees as of March this year and assets totally $185 billion, it is considered one of the Big Five American tech companies alongside Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft.

Last year Musk muscled his way into the world of social media with his acquisition of Twitter.

Aside from this he has dabbled in space exploration with his company SpaceX and has a firm grip on the electric car market with the widely popular Tesla car company.

With more companies spread across a wider range of topics like space exploration, tunnel construction with The Boring Company, and neurotech with Neuralink – DailyMail.com gives the companies round to Musk.

Verdict

With Zuckerberg winning on three out of five aspects, DailyMail.com declares the Meta CEO as the likely winner should the fight be given the go ahead.

A keen martial artist that keeps himself in top shape, Zuckerberg should have no issue in flexing his experience on Musk, who admits to not having a regimented workout regime.

Fitness site Total Shape also estimates that, should the two men meet in the octagon, Zuckerberg would come out on top.

A spokesperson for the site said: ‘Placing both titans in a cage, Mark Zuckerberg would have the edge of agility and endurance needed to take Musk down, given Musk isn’t able to forcefully strike him earlier on in the fight.

‘When it comes down the ideal body type and general endurance and skill for cage fighting, Mark Zuckerberg would have the upper hand.

‘With a high protein, health infused diet and demonstrative skills in mixed martial arts – he would most likely win.’

In a Wednesday evening vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that punts government funding negotiations to the day before Christmas Eve.

Members of Congress voted 224 to 201 on a short-term spending deal that will keep federal dollars flowing through December 23.

Nine Republicans crossed the aisle to join Democrats in passing the bill – including outgoing Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

‘The legislation before us today is a simple date change that keeps the government up and running as we negotiate the details of final spending bills and complete the work of funding the government programs that meet the needs of hardworking Americans,’ House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro said before the vote.

The bipartisan bill now heads to the Senate, which must take action by Friday to avoid a government shutdown.

On Tuesday, lawmakers leading the spending talks finally announced a compromise that would cover a year of federal funding.

But negotiations over the so-called ‘omnibus’ bill have hit fierce opposition from Republicans in the House.

Earlier on Wednesday, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy called for a slightly longer resolution that would have funded the government until January 3 – when House control would turn over to Republicans.

‘The legislation before us today is a simple date change that keeps the government up and running as we negotiate the details of final spending bills,’ House Appropriations Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro said on Wednesday

He also knocked his GOP colleagues in the Senate for helping Democrats ‘jam through’ a year-long spending bill after leaders announced they ‘should’ be able to clear a deal to fund the government and avert a shutdown.

‘The majority right now wants to put a small continuing resolution to bump all the members up to days before Christmas to try to vote a package that cannot be written by two individuals will not be here,’ McCarthy said.

‘The people deciding it aren’t going to be held up to the voters,’ McCarthy said, referring to retiring Sens. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

Unlike McCarthy, GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell is prioritizing a full-year spending bill, arguing a short-term deal would leave the military and other agencies in limbo.

‘The Democrats have been in power. They’ve had the House, the Senate and the presidency. They did not do their work. They should not jam us now,’ the California Republican said, noting that funding for fiscal year 2023 was meant to be passed at the start of the fiscal year, October 1.

If Congress fails to pass an omnibus bill this month, McCarthy said he would force Democrats to eliminate ‘waste and wokeism’ from government spending in 2023.

'We are 20 days before new members will be sworn-in,' McCarthy said, calling for a full-year spending bill to be pushed to next Congress

Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., reached an agreement with his Republican counterpart Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) to fund the government through the end of the current fiscal year. It still must pass both chambers, with a short-term funding bill set to expire Friday

The top House Republican signaled he did not want omnibus legislation and instead wanted 12 appropriations bills voted on and passed separately.

‘We are 20 days before new members will be sworn-in,’ McCarthy went on.

The GOP leader held off on criticizing McConnell for the deal, as he did last week on Fox News, and instead went after retiring GOP Sen. Richard Shelby.

‘We have two members leading appropriations who will not be here,’ he said, referring Shelby and Leahy.

Asked about McCarthy’s opposition to the omnibus bill, Shelby, R-Ala., told the Huffington Post: ‘He’s running for speaker, he’s supposed to say that.’

Last week McCarthy said on Fox that Republicans are ‘wrong’ to cut a year-end spending bill with Democrats.

‘Does that include McConnell?’ host Laura Ingram asked.

‘Yes,’ McCarthy said. ‘Why would you want to work on anything if we have the gavel inside Congress?’

McCarthy on Wednesday decried that House and Senate appropriators had announced they reached a deal without even revealing a top number.

‘We don’t even know what the baseline is yet. And they want to vote on it next week!’ he said.

McCarthy went on about the $31 trillion in national debt and noted the nation has paid $100 billion in interest on its debt this year.

‘Why would you feel comfortable moving forward? I don’t think this is a partisan issue.’

Meanwhile a group of top House and Senate appropriators announced that the outlines of a deal had been reached that ‘should’ be able to clear Congress – which would avert a shut-down crisis by dispensing with the need for short stop-gap bills.

They did not say how much money they had agreed on, providing no details in statements from three key appropriations negotiators, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, Republican Senator Richard Shelby and Democratic Representative Rosa DeLauro.

It all comes as lawmakers rushed to find a way to reach a deal before government funding runs out at midnight Friday, with lawmakers anxious to get home and avoid yet another chapter of holiday shutdown drama.

The White House has also been pushing for Congress to complete its spending work and pass the measure set to exceed $1.5 trillion, even as Biden hailed a drop in the annual deficit.

‘If all goes well, we should be able to finish an omnibus appropriations package by Dec. 23,’ said Shelby, the retiring top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

House Appropriations ranking member Kay Granger, R-Texas, didn’t take part in the deal announcement. She attended McCarthy’s press conference to express her opposition to the deal.

The news came hours after the House began moving a stopgap spending bill to avoid a partial shutdown that would otherwise begin on Friday, providing time to pass the sweeping full-year bill, which was expected to include more than $1.5 trillion in funding and will run through the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2023.

DeLauro, who head the House Appropriations panel, said lawmakers would ‘work around the clock’ to complete the job.

A first, procedural vote on the stopgap legislation was set for Wednesday.

‘The experiences of the last decade show that those who risked shutdowns in order to make political points always lose in the end,’ said Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York on Wednesday. He called it ‘a roadmap for funding the government before the conclusion of the 117th Congress’ and said there was ‘still have a long way to go.’

‘Long-term continuing resolutions cheat our armed forces out of the resources and the certainty that our commanders and civilian leaders need to keep modernizing our forces, investing in crucial weapons, and outcompeting adversaries such as China,’ said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

The full year ‘omnibus’ bill is also expected to contain new emergency funds to aid Ukraine in its battle against Russian forces.

Ukraine could get billions more, after Biden asked Congress last month for $37 billion.

It also is expected to fold in an unrelated bill reforming the way Congress certifies U.S. presidential elections by reforming the Electoral Count Act.

Negotiators have mostly settled on a Defense funding totaling $858 billion – a 10 per cent jump from prior-year funding. There was a $26 billion difference between the two sides haggling over non-defense funding, the Hill reported.

Democrats wanted $813 billion, and Republicans wanted $787 billion in non-defense spending.

The latter is aimed at avoiding a repeat of the deadly turmoil of Jan. 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump tried to stop the certification of Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Lawmakers, predominantly Democrats, have complained that Trump was able to exploit ambiguities in the law and wanted to underline the largely ceremonial role carried out by the vice president. In 2020, Trump wanted then-Vice President Mike Pence not to accept the electoral vote count.

McConnell said Republicans want work on the omnibus bill wrapped up by Dec. 22. ‘We intend to be on the road going home on the 23rd,’ he told reporters ahead of the agreement.

AstraZeneca signs huge deal with UK start-up to create treatments for diabetes and other autoimmune diseases

Pharma giant AstraZeneca has signed a huge deal with a UK start-up to create treatments for diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

The FTSE 100 firm will team up with London-based Quell Therapeutics to collaborate on research and the licensing of any new medicines.

The aim is to develop treatments for Type 1 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease through the use of genetically engineered ‘regulatory T-cells’ – ‘Tregs’ for short.

Tregs help to stop the immune system from overreacting in areas of the body affected by a disease. Quell’s technology is an extension of therapies which have proven successful in treating cancer.

Astra says it will pay Quell £68m upfront to help fund the research.

The start-up will also be eligible for over £1.6billion in development milestone payments and royalties if any drugs are approved for sale.

Mene Pangalos, executive vice-president of biopharmaceuticals research at Astra, said the deal would allow it to ‘explore the untapped potential with Treg cell therapies’.

Quell boss Iain McGill added: ‘This collaboration builds on our pioneering work to develop exquisitely engineered, multi-modular Treg cell therapies for immune disorders.’

Quell was founded in 2019 by six immunologists from King’s College London, University College London and Hannover Medical School.

Prior to the deal with Astra, it raised about £175m from a consortium of investors and is valued at about £239m.

A major backer is London-listed firm Syncona, a trust that invests in companies focused on cell and gene therapies. The firm owns just over a third of Quell.

‘Astra’s expertise and capability will be instrumental in driving these important programmes forward,’ said Martin Murphy, who is chairman of both Syncona and Quell.

News of the tie-up came as Astra announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had voted to recommend its drug nirsevimab as a treatment to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants.

RSV is a common infection that causes cold-like symptoms. Most people recover within two weeks but the illness can become serious in infants and older adults and may lead to lung infections and pneumonia.

If nirsevimab is approved, it will be the first medicine designed specifically to protect infants from RSV.

‘We look forward to continuing to work with the FDA to complete their expedited review, and we hope to see nirsevimab available as soon as possible given the significant burden of RSV in infants,’ said Iskra Reic, Astra’s executive vice-president of vaccines and immune therapies.
