  • Production and shipping of the new watch created 75% less carbon emissions
  • New watches, which range in price from $400 to $800, will be available Sept 22
  • READ MORE:  iPhone 15 is officially UNVEILED by Apple

The newly unveiled updated Apple Watch Series 9 will be Apple’s first-ever carbon neutral gadget that requires a simple tap of two fingers to work.

The device, which will become available on September 22, was also made using renewable materials and clean energy, leading to a 75 percent decrease in the amount of carbon waste emitted.

And for the first time, users will be able to control the watch simply by tapping together the index finger and thumb on their watch hand.

The Series 9 will start at $399 while the Apple Watch SE will run you $249. The Ultra 2 model will set you back $799.

The Series 9 was designed with the tech giant's most powerful chip - the S9-Chp - that is twice as fast as the one introduced in 2022

Second to the newly unveiled iPhone 15, the new Apple watches were the stars of Tuesday’s big reveal in Cupertino, California.

The double-tap touchless feature made the biggest splash.

The user need only tap their two fingers together to answer or end a call, set a timer, play music, or snooze an alarm. The small action also allows the user to take a photo with the camera remote on the watch.

The gesture feature relies on the company’s machine learning algorithm called Neural Engine which uses an accelerometer to measure the vibration between the fingers and a heart sensor to detect unique wrist movements and changes in blood flow where the two fingers tap together.

Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said: ‘We’re introducing our best Apple Watch lineup, with incredible new capabilities and technological advancements, including a new double tap gesture, brighter display, on-device Siri, as well as our first-ever carbon neutral products.

‘Whether users are upgrading from earlier models or buying their first, there’s never been a more compelling time to experience Apple Watch.’

Apple also touted its environmentalism wins that propelled it closer to its goal to make all of its products carbon-neutral by 2030.

The watch was made using 100 percent clean electricity while a third was made using recycled or renewable materials, which Apple boasts resulted in a 75 percent decrease in the amount of carbon emissions produced in manufacturing and shipping.

A company statement said: ‘Emissions were reduced from the three biggest sources of greenhouse gases — materials, electricity, and transportation.

‘The small amount of emissions remaining are offset with high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects.

‘Apple Watch packaging has been redesigned to be 100 percent fiber-based, and a new logo on the packaging indicates models that are carbon neutral.’

While the company touted its strides toward meeting its eco-conscious goal, the Tuesday reveal follows years of bad press regarding Apple’s reliance on inhumane working practices in cobalt mines in Africa.

Cobalt is used in a wide array of mobile phones and electric vehicles – almost every tech gadget that uses a lithium-powered battery.

The annual reveal has been a company staple since the original iPhone was unveiled in 2007. The unveiling of the new iPhone 15, which features an updated camera, a brighter retina display, new colors, and a range of other additions, was the headlining event.

Windows 11 has a hidden ’emergency restart’ feature you probably don’t know about – here’s how to find it

  • If your computer is completely frozen, there’s a hidden a hack that may help
  • Windows Central has shared an unexpected way to solve a computer crisis
  • By pressing just a few keys, you can restart your computer in no time at all

There’s nothing worse than a computer crashing in the middle of an important presentation or at the climax of a film.

But, as it turns out, Windows 11 has a hidden ’emergency restart’ feature that may just save you the stress in these situations.

While this tool is far from new, Windows Central shone a light on it two days ago in an effort to give troubled users a helping hand.

So, if a computer is being completely unresponsive, users can simply press the three buttons of Ctrl, Alt and Delete.

Providing the PC has Windows 11, this should bring up numerous options including Task Manager, allowing users to view running applications and sign in options.

If your computer is completely frozen, there’s a hidden a hack that may help (stock image)

HOW TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER IN AN EMERGENCY

  1. Press Ctrl, Alt and Delete
  2. Hold Ctrl again while tapping the Power button
  3. Press ‘ok’ when the emergency restart menu pops up

Shutdown, restart and sleep buttons are among these too, and should be located near the bottom of the screen.

But if none of these options are working, users can hold Ctrl again while tapping Power – the little icon at the bottom of a screen.

This should bring up an emergency menu and, if users click ‘ok’, a restart will take place.

When doing this, it’s important to note that all unsaved documents, files and work will be lost.

The hack is is primarily designed as a last-resort option for the occasions when a computer interface is completely frozen.

But this is by no means the only hack available to Windows users with a QWERTY keyboard.

Others include use of keys such as Scroll Lock and Menu which are often overlooked by users.

For instance, Scroll Lock can be used to alter the behaviour of certain program functions, such as scrolling abilities.

By pressing just a few keys, you can restart your computer in no time at all

By pressing just a few keys, you can restart your computer in no time at all

Generally, when using Excel, the arrow keys can be moved to scroll up or down one cell at a time when Scroll Lock is disabled.

But when turned on, arrow keys can be used to scroll through the worksheet area more quickly – moving one row up/down or one column left/right at a time.

Meanwhile, the Menu button – which looks like a mini page with a few lines on it – can also come in handy.

When pushed, it has the same effect as a right click, opening a context menu for the current application being used.

While this key is often forgotten about, it can be useful for those who find clicking on a laptop mousepad slightly tricky.

With this tool, computer users can dodge the pad altogether, as arrow keys can also be used to scroll through each menu option.

The Enter button can then be pressed to select a chosen option, with your hands not once leaving the keyboard.

Instagram finally launches feature users have been crying out for, for years…

Instagram has been desperate to regain its edge from rival social platform TikTok, going so far as to offer thousands of dollars to popular TikTok creators in recent years, hoping to lure them on to its own short video feature, Reels.

Now, Instagram has belatedly added a long-desired feature to Reels to make it more competitive: The ability to download short videos from Reels for reposting across the rest of social media.

The ability for TikTok users to download a watermarked version of their favorite videos and post them anywhere online has helped immeasurably to catapult the Chinese-owned platform from niche social site to global phenomenon

Instagram hopes to draw new users to Reels with this same strategy, while still allaying the concerns of its most privacy conscious members.

Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri posted an announcement about the new download feature for Reels to his own Instagram, using the platform’s new ‘broadcast channels’ feature on Tuesday.

Mosseri noted that the feature protects private accounts by preventing their followers from downloading and disseminating their Reels, as well as also allowing public Instagram accounts to disable the new feature, if they so desire.

For now, Mosseri wrote, the feature will only be available in the US, but if past updates are any indication users could be downloading Reels worldwide in the near future.

Instagram users will be able to access the feature, the CEO said, by tapping on the ‘Share’ icon for the desired Reel and clicking ‘Download.’

Last August, YouTube took similar steps to catch up to TikTok — when they began adding watermarks to their similar YouTube ‘Shorts’ feature downloads.

While Mosseri did not explicitly mention that platform would be watermarking downloaded Reels, the examples posted, as first caught by TechCrunch, did show videos branded with an Instagram logo and the user’s account name.

Back in February of 2021, Instagram told creators that it would begin to specifically target and de-rank watermarked clips from other platforms, like TikTok

So, their new move suggests that Instagram might well be taking on some risk of down-ranking retaliation with their new Reels feature itself.

There’s one thing no one wants to do in London‘s stifling 30 degree heat… and that’s take the Tube.

But fear not, travel app Citymapper has introduced a ‘With Air Conditioning’ feature that shows which modes of transport you should take if you want to beat the heat.

Brits have been facing soaring temperatures this month, with highs of 32C in some places.

But as the heat outside rises so too does the heat underground, where temperatrues on deeper-level Tube lines, like the Central and Bakerloo, can reach a stifling 32C – making for a rather miserable commuter-packed rush hour journey.

Pictured is a map showing the ‘with air-con’ and ‘without air-con’ routes for travelling from Stratford to Westminster

There are just four tube lines that currently have air-conditioning – Circle, Hammersmith and City, District and Metropolitan.

Other transport options in the capital that offer a breezy commute are the Overground, Northern City line, Elizabeth line, Thameslink and London Trams.

Citymapper is a handy directions app for those trying to navigate the capital’s complicated travel network, with helpful features such as advising which carriages are busiest and which station exits to come and go from.

The app gives you a list of suggested routes you can take – which can vary in duration and ticket cost.

And you don’t have to use the app any differently to access its new air conditioning feature, as when you map directions to a destination it will automatically highlight which routes have air-con for the whole journey. This will be below the suggested routes.

To test its feasibility, MailOnline compared four cross London journeys to regularly-visited areas to see how the air-con routes stand up on price and journey-time. All journeys were mapped for the commute time on a weekday at 7am.

And the feature proved pretty successful, with the journey time and ticket price working out very similar to the non air-conditioned routes.

There was only one journey where going for the air-conditioned route was going to add more than 10 minutes to your journey – travelling from Ealing Common to London Bridge.

The quickest route Citymapper suggests for that journey takes 36 minutes and involves getting the Piccadilly line to Green Park, then changing to the Jubilee line.

But if you want to keep cool, the shortest air-conditioned route is to get the District line to Ealing Broadway, then change to the Elizabeth line to Farringdon, before jumping on the Thameslink to your final destination of London Bridge. But this journey still only takes 47 minutes.

And for one journey, travelling from East Putney to Shoreditch, choosing the route without air-conditioning will actually take you the same amount of time – and cost more.

Pictured is a map showing the ‘with air-con’ and ‘without air-con’ routes for travelling fromEast Putney to Shoreditch

Underground furnace: How temperatures soared on the Tubes during the 2018 heatwave

Underground furnace: How temperatures soared on the Tubes during the 2018 heatwave

Scientists claim the rising temperatures – which resulted in Britain experiencing its hottest summer on record in 2022 – are ‘only the beginning’, so air-conditioned commutes might become more of a necessity.

However TFL has said there are plans in place to introduce air-con on other London lines, including the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Waterloo and City and Central.

New designs for Piccadilly line trains mean it could have air conditioning as soon as 2025.

But while the other three lines are due upgrades in the near future, there are no set dates as of yet.

One of the reasons the majority of Tube lines – Central, Bakerloo, Victoria, Piccadilly, Northern, Jubilee and Waterloo and City – don’t yet have air-con, is that the systems are very old.

The tunnels were built in the Victorian era and have just enough room for the trains themselves to fit through.

And according to charity Engineering & Technology, this means there would be nowhere for the hot air pushed out of the carriages to go. This hot air would just heat up the trains even more.

Building new ventilation shafts would be expensive and the small tunnels don’t have enough room to bolt on large air-con devices.

The lines that have air-con are simply newer, so the tunnels were made large enough to fit the equipment.

In order to fit the old Piccadilly line tunnel with air-conditioning, new train designs have reduced the number of bogies, structures holding train wheels in place, underneath. This extra space is to be used for air-con systems.

It comes after the BBC revealed London Underground journeys are on the rise again, and now 90 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

According to data from TfL, 91 million Tube journeys were made in April. This compares to 101 million for the same month four years ago in 2019.

Journeys on the network have however risen by almost 12 million since the same time last year – when the country was still reeling from the effects of Covid.

Saturday and Sunday are currently off-peak all day, resulting in a reduced fare, with peak times being Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 9.30am and between 4pm and 7pm.

After data showed that Fridays see 28 per cent less Tube customers than Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, it was suggested TfL might make travel cheaper either side of the weekend.

But responding to the claims, a TfL spokesperson said that there were currently no plans to change the timing of off-peak tickets.

Snooping on a partner’s phone is not unheard of in a mistrusting or unfaithful relationship.

But WhatsApp users have joked that cheating has now been ‘upgraded’ thanks to the app’s new Chat Lock feature, which allows users to keep secret conversations locked up with a password.

While it can be used for more innocent purposes such as planning surprises, many have thanked owner Mark Zuckerberg for helping to keep infidelities under the radar.

‘This is so great and wonderful news thanks Mr,’ one Facebook user said. ‘Cheating has been upgraded.’

Yet, a cybersecurity expert also warned that it could be used for ‘nefarious purposes’, with numerous Metropolitan Police officers previously charged and sacked over discriminatory WhatsApp messages.

HOW TO LOCK WHATSAPP CHATS

  1. Open the WhatsApp app and tap on the name of a group or one-to-one chat
  2. A lock option should then appear, prompting users to enter the device password or biometric data (like a fingerprint) to secure the chat
  3. To reveal these again, the password or biometric data should be applied after pulling down on a WhatsApp inbox

The Chat Lock feature was rolled out as part of WhatsApp’s continued efforts to keep messages ‘private and secure’.

In a blog post, it said: ‘Locking a chat takes that thread out of the inbox and puts it behind its own folder that can only be accessed with your device password or biometric, like a fingerprint. It also automatically hides the contents of that chat in notifications, too.

‘We think this feature will be great for people who have reason to share their phones from time to time with a family member or those moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra special chat arrives.’

Yet Facebook has been flooded with comments after Zuckerberg suggested that it could be used to hide a ‘secret sauce recipe’ and a ‘fight club’.

Drawing to the 1999 film starring Brad Pitt, one user joked: ‘First rule of fight club…’

Another added: ‘On behalf of CPA (cheating partners association) we commend the great work you are doing.’

Someone else chimed in: Wow, this is absolutely fascinating and groundbreaking!

‘The realm of cheating has just entered a whole new level of sophistication and advancement. Thank you for enlightening us with this intriguing information.’

However, the feature also comes at a time when numerous Metropolitan Police officers have been charged or sacked over discriminatory messages.

Sarah Everard’s murderer Wayne Couzens was found to be in a WhatsApp group called ‘Bottles & Stoppers’ where officers joked about rape.

Meanwhile, eight Metropolitan Police officers were previously charged following their involvement in another warped WhatsApp conversation.

The so-called ‘Secret Squirrel S**t’ chat was revealed to contain sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic profanities

With that in mind, Jake Moore, a Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, believes privacy features could be used for ‘nefarious’ purposes, though he acknowledged it is difficult to establish how so, this early on.

He said: ‘It’s difficult to point the finger at who specifically would use the feature but it could suggest nefarious use indeed.

‘Locking chats with a passcode adds a layer of security and improves privacy from prying eyes with physical contact.

‘Many other privacy focused chat applications are available but WhatsApp is the clear front runner with most people. Although messages are sent with end to end encryption (meaning that such messages cannot be intercepted) the key to unlocking these messages is the device passcode.

‘For more private chats, the ‘Disappearing Messages’ feature in the app adds a much better level of security which wipes messages completely after a certain amount of time.’

To lock a chat, users should open the WhatsApp and tap on the name of a group or one-to-one conversation.

A lock option should then appear, which will prompt users to enter the device password or biometric data to secure that chat.

To reveal these, a password or biometric data should be applied after pulling down on a WhatsApp inbox.

WhatsApp claims that more options are to be added to this feature over the next few months.

It said: ‘Over the next few months we’re going to be adding more options for Chat Lock, including locking for companion devices and creating a custom password for your chats so that you can use a unique password different from the one you use for your phone.’

WhatsApp has been approached for comment.

BEST WHATSAPP ALTERNATIVES

If you’re considering deleting WhatsApp, you’ll be happy to hear that there are several alternative apps to choose from:

1. Telegram

With more than 400 million users, Telegram is one of the most popular WhatsApp alternatives.

While it looks very similar to WhatsApp, what sets it apart is the fact that it gives the option to set messages to self-destruct after a given period of time, leaving no trace.

Telegram also offers end-to-end encryption.

However, as a WhatsApp spokesperson pointed out, Telegram ‘does not offer end-to-end encryption by default so it’s not necessarily more secure than WhatsApp’.

2. Signal

Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps, thanks to the fact that it is open-source.

This means that the code for the app is publicly available to view, making it near-impossible for the app’s creators to sneak in any backdoors that could allow governments or hackers to spy on your messages.

3. iMessage

If you use an iPhone, you may consider simply switching to iMessage, Apple’s own messaging app.

The app has a number of impressive features included no character limits, the ability to send pictures and videos, and of course Apple’s animated emoji feature, Animoji.

Unfortunately, iMessage is only available for iPhone users, so you’ll struggle to interact with anyone using an Android.

4. Google Messages

Google’s answer to iMessage is Google Messages, an Android-only messaging service.

The app replaces your standard SMS app, and integrates with all of Google’s apps and services, making it easy to share images or use Google Assistant.

5. Facebook Messenger

If you were put off using WhatsApp due to its sharing of data with Facebook, Facebook Messenger may not be the best option for you.

However, the app offers a number of helpful features, including games, secret conversations and video calls.

Revealed: Uber to launch flight-booking feature on its app this summer for UK users

Uber has announced a new UK feature that will allow users to book flights directly in the Uber app.

The new functionality – powered by online travel agent Hopper – will be available to all UK users this summer and will allow them to book domestic and international flights from the app.

To book a flight Uber app users will need to enter their travel details, including where they will be travelling to and from, along with dates.

Customers will then be able to select their departing flight and returning flight if a round trip.

With major carriers, users will be able to select seats in the app and then pay, just as they would for any Uber service.

Uber said this new functionality ‘will allow for a true door-to-door experience for air travellers, with all legs of the journey being manageable in Uber’s smart travel itinerary’.

In addition, the ride-share firm said that ‘through working with Hopper’, it can offer customers ‘multiple unique peace of mind products to help make air travel stress-free’, including ‘price freeze, flight disruption guarantee, cancel for any reason, change for any reason and VIP support’.

Flights on Uber join existing transport options including Uber Rides, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, train journeys across the National Rail network, Eurostar and coach travel with National Express and Megabus.

And Uber recently integrated bookings with Heathrow Express, allowing for seamless booking through the airport shuttle service.

Andrew Brem, General Manager at Uber UK, said: ‘We’re incredibly pleased to introduce flight bookings as the latest addition to Uber’s suite of travel booking options.

‘Perfect for business travellers and tourists alike, our new functionality will make the booking and managing of air travel simple and stress-free, with the booking process taking as little as one minute in the Uber app. Over the past 12 months with the addition of rail, coach and now flight bookings, Uber is truly a one-stop travel solution.’

Frederic Lalonde, CEO and Co-Founder of Hopper, said: ‘The addition of flights to the Uber app is a big win for UK consumers who are looking for an easier way to book travel. This new partnership will offer Uber users choice, transparency and flexibility when booking flights, all in the same place they are already booking their other transportation.’
