Galatasaray ‘could swoop for Tottenham outcast Tanguy Ndombele’ after failing to agree a deal with Manchester United for wantaway midfielder Fred

Galatasaray are set to move for Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele after failing to agree a deal with Manchester United for Fred.

The 26-year-old has failed to live up to expectations in north London, having joined for £55million in 2019.

And Ndombele, who has spent the last two seasons away on loan at Lyon and Serie A champions Napoli, is an option for the Turkish champions, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

New boss Ange Postecoglou is understood to have paved the way for the French midfielder to leave the club this summer.

And reports suggest the Spurs outcast could be available for just £11m.

Galatasaray are still keen to sign wantaway Fred this summer.

Their undisclosed bid was turned down by United last month but with discussions continuing, a departure before the transfer deadline remains possible.

Fred, who recently changed his agency as he seeks an exit from Old Trafford, has entered the last year of his contract and is valued at around the £20million mark.

It is believed he has also been on the radar of Fulham and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

The 30-year-old joined United in 2018 for a fee of £52m and has made 213 appearances across all competitions to date, scoring 14 goals.

With United having strengthened their midfield with the arrival of Mason Mount from Chelsea, the club are open to several departures in the position.

Row at the General Medical Council as doctors accuse the regulators of failing to tackle medics who spread Covid vaccine conspiracies

  • Doctors have accused the GMC failing at its role as the standards regulator
  • It is supposed to police doctors and ensure standards to protect the public

Angry doctors have accused the General Medical Council of negligence for failing to crack down on medics who spread false information about Covid-19 jabs.

They say the doctors’ regulator – charged with protecting patients and maintaining standards in medicine – is shirking its statutory responsibility to police its members properly.

All practising doctors in the UK must be registered with the body.

Six clinicians have launched a crowdfunding initiative to raise £15,000 to pay for a judicial review of the GMC’s decision not to bring high profile doctors before a fitness to practise panel.

They say its failure to do so has serious implications for public health. Dr David Nicholl, one of the six and a consultant neurologist in Birmingham, said: ‘I am so angry that the GMC is doing nothing.

‘It’s in direct contravention of what it should stand for.

‘I’m a passionate believer in free speech, but with it comes responsibility. The question here is should doctors be free to publicly say what they want, whatever the consequences?’

A small number of high-profile British medics have used their social media status to repeatedly spread vaccine misinformation, the doctors allege. This includes heavily disputed claims on Twitter and in TV interviews that some or all Covid vaccines are ineffective and cause widespread serious heart problems.

In a statement last week the group said some of the anti-vax messages implied ‘particular deaths are due to the vaccines, when there is no evidence to support that link’.

It added: ‘We don’t mean pointing out that vaccines occasionally cause harm. We mean wilfully and repeatedly misrepresenting the evidence on vaccines in a way that significantly over-emphasises their harm.

‘The GMC has a statutory remit to investigate doctors who… behave in a way that brings the profession into disrepute.’

The group said the failure to act is in direct contrast to the recent expulsion by the Conservative Party of North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen for making ‘false and misleading’ anti-vaccine statements.

Watchdog Ofcom ruled last month that GB News was at fault for allowing a doctor to liken the vaccine roll-out to ‘mass murder’.

The six doctors’ statement added: ‘Surely the GMC should also be investigating doctors who make statements that are scientifically incorrect and misleading?’

Trisha Greenhalgh, Professor of Primary Healthcare at Oxford University, expressed her support for the action on Twitter.

She said: ‘I agree that the GMC should not routinely wash its hands of such cases.’

In a statement to The Mail on Sunday, the GMC said: ‘We take action where there is evidence of a risk to patients or public confidence or a serious breach of proper professional standards or conduct.

‘We don’t take this responsibility lightly and realise that our decisions can sometimes be disappointing for complainants.’

Donald Trump rages at Texas Governor Greg Abbott for not standing by the state’s impeached Attorney General: ‘MISSING IN ACTION!’

  • Trump said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was ‘MIA’ for failing to back AG Ken Paxton
  • The Texas House of Representatives voted to impeach Paxton on Saturday
  • Trump voiced his support for Paxton before the debate even began

Donald Trump has slammed Texas Governor Greg Abbott for failing to get behind his Attorney General Ken Paxton – who was impeached this weekend over misconduct allegations.

Trump, who is a longtime ally of the state’s top lawyer, described Paxton on Saturday as as ‘one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States’.

That came hours before the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to impeach Paxton on 20 counts that included bribery and abuse of public trust.

But Abbott, who is now empowered to appoint an interim attorney general, has remained silent on the impeachment throughout the week and weekend, causing Trump to take aim at him personally.

‘MISSING IN ACTION! Where is the Governor of Texas on his Attorney General’s Impeachment?’ he wrote in a Truth Social post on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day before the debate in the House began, Trump voiced his own support of Paxton, and called the Texas House speaker facilitating the impeachment a ‘Republican in name only’.

‘The RINO Speaker of the House of Texas, Dade Phelan, who is barely a Republican at all and failed the test on voter integrity, wants to impeach one of the most hard working and effective Attorney Generals in the United States, Ken Paxton, who just won re-election with a large number of American Patriots strongly voting for him,’ he wrote.

‘You would think that any issue would have been fully adjudicated by the voters of Texas, especially when that vote was so conclusive….’ he added.

Paxton has been under criminal indictment since 2015 over conduct from before he took office but was reelected in both 2018 and 2022. In 2014, he admitted that he breached Texas laws by failing to register as an ‘investment advisor’ while soliciting clients.

A year later, he was indicted on felony charges by a grand jury in his hometown near Dallas following accusations he defrauded investors in a tech startup. He has since pleaded not guilty to two felony counts that carry a potential sentence of up to 99 years in prison.

The move to impeach Paxton on Saturday made him the third sitting official in Texas’ nearly 200-year history to have been impeached.

Paxton shared a statement in which he called his impeachment an 'ugly spectacle'. He is pictured reading a statement in his office in Austin, Texas, on May 26

Paxton has decried what he called ‘political theater’ based on ‘hearsay and gossip, parroting long-disproven claims’, and said it’s an attempt to disenfranchise voters who reelected him in November.

Trump echoed that sentiment. ‘Hopefully Republicans in the Texas House will agree that this is a very unfair process that should not be allowed to happen or proceed – I will fight you if it does,’ he wrote in another post.

On Friday, his son, Donald Trump Jr., called the impeachment proceedings a ‘disgrace’.

Hours after his impeachment Paxton took to Twitter himself. ‘The ugly spectacle in the Texas House today confirmed the outrageous impeachment plot against me was never meant to be fair or just,’ he began a statement.

‘I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just,’ he wrote.

Lloyds Bank this weekend fired a salvo at Facebook-owner Meta, slamming it for failing to stop a ‘Wild West’ surge in online shopping scams. Britain’s biggest retail bank – which has 26 million customers – blasted the social media giant for enabling so-called ‘purchase’ frauds.

The banking group claimed two-thirds of the scams start on Meta-owned platforms, which also includes Instagram.

Banks and insurance groups have been frustrated for years that social media companies are not made to pay their fair share of compensation to victims for frauds hosted on their platforms.

But it is highly unusual for a lender like Lloyds to take aim at an individual tech firm like Meta.

The intervention puts Lloyds Banking Group boss Charlie Nunn at loggerheads with Facebook tycoon Mark Zuckerberg.

British banks have previously urged ministers to tackle online financial scams amid concerns that criminals are using Facebook and Google to place fraudulent advertisements with impunity.

The failure of internet giants to check the authenticity of digital ads has led to a surge of scams, they claim. These include ‘brand cloning’, where criminals impersonate legitimate businesses to dupe victims into handing over their savings. Purchase fraud tends to target younger consumers who are tricked into paying for sought-after items that don’t actually exist.

Victims are lured by the offer of a cheap deal – often advertised on social media – and then asked to send money from their own secure online bank account direct to the seller via a transfer system known as faster payments.

However, this provides very little protection when things go wrong.

The scam is a small but growing part of online fraud, which now accounts for 40 per cent of all crime and costs £7 billion a year, according to latest government figures.

The number of purchase frauds has soared by 40 per cent since the start of the pandemic to over 117,000 cases in 2022, according to the UK Finance trade body. It coincided with a boom in online shopping, more time spent on social media and shortages of certain goods caused by supply chain issues.

Lloyds, whose brands include Hailfax and Bank of Scotland, estimates that someone falls victim to the scam on a Meta-owned platform every seven minutes, costing consumers £27 million this year alone.

The average amount lost by the victims of purchase scams is around £570. Clothes, trainers, gaming consoles and mobile phones are among the most common goods being falsely advertised for sale.

Lloyds said it reimburses ‘the majority’ of victims and has invested ‘hundreds of millions of pounds’ in security systems to beat the scammers.

But refunds don’t address the emotional trauma of being a victim of fraud or stop the flow of money to organised crime, it added.

‘Social media has become the Wild West of online shopping in recent years, with very few checks in place to verify who is selling what,’ said Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds Banking Group.

The Government’s new national fraud strategy allows banks more time to slow down suspicious payments. But Ziegler said banks couldn’t fight the ‘epidemic of scams’ alone.

‘It’s high time tech companies stepped up to share responsibility for protecting their own customers,’ she said.

‘This means stopping scams at source and contributing to refunds when their platforms are used to defraud innocent victims.’

An amendment to the long-delayed Online Safety Bill requires social media firms to prevent paid-for fraudulent adverts, regardless of whether the ads are controlled by the platforms or an intermediary. It followed pressure from consumer groups, charities and the banking industry who claimed the Government’s approach to tackling online fraud was ‘flawed’.

But critics say the proposals still don’t go far enough. ‘Fraudsters don’t just pay for adverts or create fraudulent content that fits within the scope of the Bill,’ said a banking industry source. ‘The exclusion of online marketplaces like Facebook’s is therefore a significant loophole.’

Campaigners say only the threat of fines will force the social media companies to act.

‘Without penalties there’s nothing in it for them to stop the scams from happening,’ said consumer champion Baroness Altmann. She fears the Government is ‘absolutely terrified of upsetting the tech companies’ and of being seen to clamp down on the free market.

James Daley, founder of consumer campaign group Fairer Finance, said social media sites had become ‘a gateway for fraudsters’.

‘Firms like Meta have a clear responsibility to step up and protect their users,’ he said. ‘But if past experience is anything to go by, it’s unlikely these firms will do much if they don’t have to.

‘The Government announced plans to introduce new protections last year, but these have now been kicked into the long grass again.’

Meta said purchase fraud was ‘an industry-wide issue’ with scammers using ‘increasingly sophisticated methods’ to defraud people ‘in a range of ways, including email, text and offline’.

A spokesman said: ‘We don’t want anyone to fall victim to these criminals which is why our platforms have systems to block scams. Financial services advertisers now have to be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.’

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology was approached for comment.

The Arizona sheriff at the sharp end of the country’s immigration crisis slammed the Biden administration on Thursday, saying it had failed to prepare for the end of Title 42.

‘It’s a cluster,’ Sheriff Leon Wilmot told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview.

He said Border Patrol detained about 1200 people on Wednesday and were on course to do the same again on Thursday.

It was part of an expected surge of arrivals by migrants as the U.S. relaxes a tough public health restriction that meant millions of arrivals could be immediately expelled without even making asylum claims.

On Thursday, Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls demanded that President Joe Biden declare a national emergency at the southern border.

'It's a cluster,' Yuma Sheriff Leon Wilmot told DailyMail.com Thursday in an exclusive interview about the end of Title 42. He and his county are in the frontline of the border crisis

And Wilmot said the lack of preparation meant President Joe Biden was unable to enforce existing border laws and said overwhelmed authorities in nearby Cochise County were already releasing people on to the streets without proper processing or court dates.

He reserved particular fury for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and claims that the U.S. was toughening its response.

‘Any good leader that was facing this kind of situation would have stood up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), got emergency funding for ICE, put up shelters in their temporary buildings to accommodate all this, so proper processing could be done,’ he said.

‘He did none of this. So he doesn’t have a plan.

‘His plan is obviously intentionally to just allow everybody into this country and try to track down that many millions of people years down the road.

‘It’s a false narrative that this administration is pushing to the American people.’

On Thursday morning, the extent of the surge was evident in Yuma even before the sun came up. More than 300 people waited in line to register with Border Patrol officers as buses pulled up and departed filled with migrants.

Many were from Peru. But the arrivals included people from China, Georgia, Uzbekistan, and the African nation of Mauritania.

Wilmot said that made for a security risk not just for his community but communities across the country that had advertised themselves as sanctuary cities.

Some 4,000 people he said were currently in custody in Yuma, far more than the capacity of local agencies.

Wilmot has been sheriff of Yuma since 2013, putting him in the frontline of the crisis.

The county has long known as a favorite crossing point, with cartels directing people to the border here for a fee.

The sheriff had been patroling along the border late Wednesday night and suffered a puncture to his Ford Raptor truck.

DailyMail.com caught up with him as he had a new tire fitted the following day and prepared for the end of Title 42.

‘This is on this administration,’ said Wilmot. ‘The president needs to enforce the rule of law. Period.

‘It’s just totally aggravating to see a lack of leadership at the highest level of government.

Sheriffs, he added, were stepping up as much as they could.

‘We’re doing our job. I’ve already told my guys if they trespass on somebody’s property arrest them.

‘There’s gonna be 100 percent prosecution for anyone that breaks state law.’

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas explained Thursday that the end of Title 42 meant migrants would now be processed under Title 8

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas explained Thursday that the end of Title 42 meant migrants would now be processed under Title 8

Earlier Mayorkas insisted that new arrivals would not receive softer treatment with the end of Title 42. It simply meant migrants would now be processed under Title 8 and a new regulation that meant most people could only enter if they had booked an appointment with an app, he added.

‘Here’s what that means,’ he said. ‘If anyone arrives at our southern border after midnight tonight, they will be presumed ineligible for asylum and subject to steeper consequences for unlawful entry, including a minimum five-year ban on reentry and potential criminal prosecution.’

Don’t listen to the people offering you a path to the promised land, he added.

‘Know this: Smugglers care only about profits not people,’ he said.
