TRANSFER GOSSIP COLUMN: Everton eye audacious swoop for PSG outcast Hugo Ekitike, Barcelona are REFUSING to give up on Bernardo Silva and Napoli are locked in talks over a huge new deal for Victor Osimhen

  • Everton’s need for attacking reinforcements has seen them eye Hugo Ekitike
  • Barcelona’s long-running pursuit of Bernardo Silva is contuning apace right now
  • Premier League transfer window: Club-by-club list of all the summer moves

The start of the season across Europe’s top five leagues is rapidly approaching – but many managers remain short of players they are after in a bid to deliver success.

Plenty of movement is still expected – in spite of the millions already shelled out this summer – with championship-contending sides, as well as teams expected to struggle down the bottom, planning further business.

Bayern Munich remain locked on landing Harry Kane from Tottenham, while Manchester United are expected to get a couple more through the door as they clear out some of their fringe stars.

Manchester City could see one in, one out, in midfield with firm interest in West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta, while there is a sense that PSG are in selling mode after five players were brutally told they are surplus to requirements in the French capital.

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at all the latest news and transfer gossip on Thursday.

Ex-Navy SEAL Republican Dan Crenshaw pops out glass eye and drops into team trophy as a protest over refereeing in congressional soccer match win

  • Crenshaw was injured by a bomb blast in Afghanistan more than a decade ago
  • He made the bizarre protest over a disputed penalty kick that referees refused to award
  • The game took place at MLS team DC United’s Audi Field late on Tuesday

Soccer officials  are used to coming under fire from players over their allegedly poor decisions.

But one U.S. lawmaker had his own way of making his feelings known over a disputed penalty kick that was not awarded at the 9th annual Congressional match in Washington, D.C,. on Tuesday.

Dan Crenshaw, who turned out for the Republican team that triumphed 4-2 over the Democrats, removed his glass eye to complain about the standard of refereeing in the game.

‘The refs have two eyeballs, but they don’t use them, so I’m just going to give them one of mine,’ Crenshaw said before it into the winners’ trophy.

The Texas Congressman, a veteran of the elite Navy Seals force. lost his right eye and sustained damage to his left eye in Afghanistan in 2012 when a bomb exploded.

The 39-year-old went on to serve two more tours after the injury.

He had appeared alongside fellow House members Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.), Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) and former Minnesota GOP Rep. Erik Paulsen.

Valadao also complained that the referees failed to award a goal that he said had crossed the line.

Lining up for the Democrats were Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.), Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.) and Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).

Hosted by the U.S. Soccer Federation, this year’s game took place at D.C. United’s Audi Field, the MLS soccer team coached by England legend Wayne Rooney.

Last year, it was the Democrats who romped to victory over their GOP rivals, beating the Republican team 5-3.

It’s a big week in congressional sports as the annual Congressional Baseball Game is set to be held Wednesday evening.

Artificial intelligence technology helped researchers identify a trio of chemicals that target faulty cells linked to age-related health issues, including certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease.

The algorithm comb through a library of more than 4,300 chemical compounds and identified 21 drug candidates that could prompt cell senescence.

This is a phenomenon in which faulty cells stop multiplying but do not die off as they should and continue to release chemicals that can trigger inflammation.

Of those 21 candidates, the scientists zeroed in on three compounds – ginkgetin, oleandrin, and periplocin – which were able to remove defective cells without harming healthy ones when tested on human cells.

AI is increasingly becoming a fixture in medical and scientific research, able to sift through mountains of dense data far faster than a human ever could to aid in the diagnosis of and treatment for diseases.

The research team headed up by experts at Scotland's University of Edinburgh devised an algorithm that successfully zeroed in on three natural compounds that can help stave off age-related health declines such as vision loss, loss of mobility, and Alzheimer's

The research team headed up by experts at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh devised an algorithm that successfully zeroed in on three natural compounds that can help stave off age-related health declines such as vision loss, loss of mobility, and Alzheimer’s

The team led by researchers from the University of Edinburgh said their machine-learning technology led to several hundred-fold reductions in the cost of screening for effective ‘senolytic’ drugs.

‘Senolytic’ drugs induce death of senescent cells and improve health in humans.

Dr Diego Oyarzún, a co-author of the study, said: ‘This study demonstrates that AI can be incredibly effective in helping us identify new drug candidates, particularly at early stages of drug discovery and for diseases with complex biology or few known molecular targets.’

Cellular senescence occurs in a wide range of health conditions associated with getting older, including vision decline, osteoarthritis, a chronic lung disease known as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, and atherosclerosis, a cardiovascular condition that develops when sticky plaques build up in the arteries.

Cell senescence is a marker of an aging immune system.

It refers to a state of the cell cycle when cells cannot grow and replicate but don’t die either as part of a natural process known as apoptosis.

Instead, the senescent cells remain active within the body and release harmful substances that can cause inflammation and harm to nearby healthy cells, similar to how a moldy piece of melon would contaminate the entire fruit salad.

Because cell senescence entails a halt in the replication of cells, the process is believed to have a suppressive effect on tumors.

At the same time, senescence can promote cancer development by altering the environment around the cell.

The researchers said: ‘Besides their role in cancer and aging, the senescent program has been linked to adverse effects in a broad range of conditions, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, pulmonary fibrosis, SARS-CoV-2 infection, hepatic steatosis, and neurodegeneration.’

Only one therapy, a combination of Dasatinib plus Quercetin, has been shown in clinical trials to reduce the volume of senescent cells in mice.

Among the three compounds the researchers identified as able to eliminate senescent cells, oleandrin proved more potent than cardiac glycosides, the best-performing family of senolytic drugs.

The three compounds identified in the study, published in the journal Nature Communications, are natural products found in traditional herbal medicines.

Dr Vanessa Smer-Barreto, a co-author, said: ‘This work was borne out of an intensive collaboration between data scientists, chemists and biologists.

‘Harnessing the strengths of this interdisciplinary mix, we were able to build robust models and save screening costs by using only published data for model training. I hope this work will open new opportunities to accelerate the application of this exciting technology.’

Two women who accidentally sealed their eyes shut with superglue after mistaking the bottles for eye drops have shared their agonizing recoveries.

Jennifer Eversole, from Santa Rosa, picked up the bottle from her dresser, which she had put next to her drops after gluing on her daughter’s nails, and only realized the mistake when she poured some into her left eye.

The mother-of-six was rushed to the hospital, where doctors eventually pried her eye open and cleared the superglue.

Revealing the mistake online, she said: ‘Well, I’ve gone and done it. I have won the most idiot person award. I wasn’t paying attention, and now my eye is glued shut.’

‘I just feel so stupid.’

Last year, a 22-year-old woman named Lyd detailed a similar incident: she woke up in the middle of the night, reached for eye drops, and grabbed glue instead.

Jennifer Eversole of Santa Rosa, California, accidentally glued her eye shut after mistaking the bottle of nail superglue for her eye drops. She documented her experience on TikTok and said she has since made a full recovery

Ms Eversole revealed the accident on TikTok earlier this week in a video that reached 4.4 million views, saying that she realized something was wrong the moment she poured the glue into her left eye.

In a video explaining how it felt, she said: ‘Intense burning. Really bad burning, it felt hot.’

She quickly shut her eyes, which she thought kept most of the glue from getting into her eyeball, and then called an ambulance.

At the hospital, doctors put a specialist antibiotic ointment onto her eyelashes and eyelids to disintegrate the glue. The antibiotics also helped minimize the risk of infection.

They could then pry open the eyelid and check damage to her eyeball. She was able to keep it open after using numbing eye drops.

Later she was discharged but told to keep a bandage on her eye and apply ointment daily to help gradually disintegrate the remaining bits of glue trapped underneath her eyelid.

Ms Eversole said her vision was still ‘super, super blurry’ after all the glue came off.

But she revealed in a post yesterday that her eye was ‘healing nicely’. Doctors expect her vision to return to normal within days, she said.

She does not appear to have suffered any lasting damage to her eyeball, although she said she felt like the glue had scratched it at the time of the accident.

‘I am definitely more appreciative of my eyesight,’ she said. ‘You don’t know how much you need both your eyes until you can’t use one of them.’

When asked how she made that mistake, Ms Eversole showed images of the two bottles and said that they looked very similar and that she wasn’t paying attention and didn’t notice.

‘I was distracted talking to my daughter getting ready to pick up groceries, and I just grabbed it. They are the same size!’ she said.

It’s unclear whether she wears contact lenses, although this appears likely. In other videos, she is pictured wearing glasses.

Despite the EMTs not seeing another case like this, this issue is common enough for the glue company Super Glue Corporation to have an FAQ section on its website.

However, most cases do not have severe effects. A 2012 study in the International Journal of Ophthalmology examined people with superglue in their eyes and found no instances where permanent damage was caused.

The worst the researchers found were cases where the eye had sealed shut, and parts of glue remained in the eye.

Lyd, 22, shared on TikTok last year that she put superglue in her eye after waking up in the middle of the night and grabbing the wrong bottle. Doctors had to pry her eye open

Ms Eversole isn’t the only person to make that mistake.

Last year, 22-year-old Lyd shared on TikTok that she also glued one of her eyes shut.

In a video with 5.5 million views, Lyd said she had mistaken a superglue bottle for her eye drops.

Like Ms Eversole, she went to the hospital. Doctors first asked her to apply ointment to break down and dissolve the glue.

However, when that didn’t work, they then started picking at the glue. Eventually, doctors had to use ‘a metal tool to pry it open and finally got it to open.’

In the comments, Lyd explained that she had woken up in the middle of the night to use her eye drops and had accidentally reached for the wrong bottle.

‘Man I bet that was really eye opening,’ one user commented.

‘Didn’t see it comin,’ Lyd replied.
