Incredible moment crocodiles HELP stray dog in their river by nudging it to safety with their noses instead of eating it

  • Stray dog ran into crocodile infested river after being chased by pack of dogs

A stray dog that was quickly surrounded by three crocodiles as soon as it ran into their river may have thought that it wouldn’t survive another minute.

But in an astonishing turn of events, two of the crocodiles decided to nudge the young stray, which had jumped into the river to escape a pack of feral dogs, to safety with their snouts.

Experts say that instead of devouring the stray dog, the marsh crocodiles ‘guided’ it away from where the barking pack of dogs were waiting for it on the river bank in the state of Maharashtra, western India

‘These crocodiles were actually touching the dog with their snout and nudging it to move further for a safe ascent on the bank and eventually escape,’ the scientists wrote in a report published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa.

‘Given that the crocodile was well within the striking range and could have easily devoured the dog, yet none of them attacked and instead chose to nudge it towards the bank, implies that the hunger drive was absent.’

The scientists are still unsure as to why the marsh crocodiles, which can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, didn’t see it as an opportunity to eat the dog.

But they say that marsh crocodiles, known as muggers, are not always aggressive and that their emotional intelligence could have been on display in this case.

‘Emotional empathy’, which allows a species ‘to experience feelings for another’, has not been investigated in the muggers, the scientists said.

‘The curious case of a dog “rescued” by the group of crocodiles reported her seems more on lines of empathy than altruistic behaviour,’ they said.

The scientists added: ‘Reptiles have been underestimated as far as animal cognition is concerned.’

Marsh crocodiles are most commonly found in India and adult males can reach up to 18ft in length and weight up to 1,000 pounds.

The researchers also detailed how they made the ‘curious’ discovery that marsh crocodiles also adore marigolds. They said the muggers were often found floating and banking in the yellow flowers along Savitri river.

They believed that this could be due to the properties of the flower, which would help protect the crocodiles from fungi and bacteria.

‘This behaviour is novel and intriguing,’ the researchers said while adding the behaviour needed further investigation.’

People who bought ‘pandemic puppies’ are now seeing signs of separation anxiety as more people return to working from the office full-time, an expert warns.

Lorna Winter, dog trainer and co-founder of puppy training app ZigZag, said owners are facing a double whammy of problems.

Those dogs will also be going through adolescence about now, and their anxiety is likely to get worse, she said.

Winter said that it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that anxiety-related behavior is problematic (almost 20 percent of dog owners would consider giving up their animal due to it, ZigZag‘s research found).

But in most cases, there are easy steps to take to deal with an anxious dog – whatever the cause of its anxiety, Winter said.

Forgetting commands

If your dog has forgotten commands it has been trained to obey, this could be a warning sign of anxiety, Winter said.

Winter said: ‘When a dog is anxious they can sometimes go into a state called ‘learned helplessness’, which can look like they’re being distant or ignoring commands.

‘In cases of separation anxiety, your dog might’ve been so panicked when you were gone, that on your return; they pretty much shut down.’

Does your dog sometimes forget commands?

Does your dog sometimes forget commands?

Whining when you leave the room

Barking or whining when you leave the room could be a sign of anxiety, in particular of separation anxiety, Winter says.

Winter said: ‘Does your puppy bark a lot when you leave the house? Or whine even if you leave the room?

‘These are all signs that your puppy could have separation anxiety, a catch-all term used to describe when a dog finds it challenging to be alone.

‘This anxiety often comes out when they are alone and fearful that they have been abandoned.’

Winter recommends going up to the door randomly through the day to get your dog used to the idea, then for the next three days opening and closing the door.

Winter says, ‘Then step out, just for a few seconds, and leave the door on the latch – you don’t want your pup to make any associations just yet Then start upping the time

Make your exits and entrances as fuss-free as possible – help your puppy understand that this is a part of the daily norm and build up slowly!’

Digging

Digging is a ‘displacement behavior’ which offers dogs a sense of comfort if they are feeling anxious, Winter says.

She says, ‘Consider taking the first step by eliminating any potential stressors that might be triggering their desire to dig. It’s possible that they’re signalling their discomfort and expressing a desire for a change of scene.’

She also points out that some breeds are more prone to digging when anxious or excited, including Dachshunds, Beagles and most herding and working breeds.

Dachshunds love to dig along with other breeds, says Winter

Dachshunds love to dig along with other breeds, says Winter

She says that you can channel a dog’s anxiousness into play by providing fun ways to dig such as by filling a children’s sandpit with dirt or dog safe sand and hiding toys in there to encourage digging.

She says, ‘You can also try cutting down the sides on a large cardboard box and fill it with rolled up packing material, then scatter some treats to encourage them to dig and find them. Voilà you’ve made a foraging box or indoor digging pit.

‘Additionally, make sure there’s plenty of blankets in their bed that they can dig and make a nest to snuggle down into when they need to.’

Chewing on shoes

Chewing on sofas, shoes, doors, usually boils down to either anxiety or boredom, says Winter.

She says, ‘This habit for chewing stems from a reliable self-soothing instinct that makes them feel good, as chewing triggers the release of endorphins such as dopamine and serotonin in their brains.

‘Consider offering your pup a safe chew toy – something they can get their teeth into and relieve some of the stress and anxiety they might be feeling. Like stress balls for humans – these toys are great for diminishing pent-up anxious energy and will hopefully stop the sofa destruction!’

Winter recommends keeping an eye on your dog via a webcam when you are not at home.

She said, ‘It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your dog via camera when you’re not at home. Do they appear distressed during their destructive escapades, or do you notice other signs of anxiety? In such cases, delving into a separation anxiety protocol can be beneficial to ease their distress when you’re away.

‘However, if it seems like they’re having a party of their own while you’re absent, then increasing their daily mental and physical stimulation is a wise move!’

Going to the toilet indoors

Most puppies have small bladders and limited control, so it’s natural for them to have ‘spontaneous bathroom breaks’, says Winter.

She said: ‘If your pup consistently uses the indoor facilities when you’re not around or during the night, it’s likely they’re dealing with separation anxiety.

‘Puppies thrive on routines, finding comfort in the predictability of playtime, walks, and mealtimes.

‘Establishing a schedule can work wonders for both puppy separation anxiety and toilet training.’

The chiseled True Blood star, 46, wore a muscle tee with his bag slung across his torso as Bubbles crossed his paws and relaxed in his fur dad’s arm.

His sighting with Bubbles comes just over a month after DailyMail.com exclusively revealed that estranged wife Sofia Vergara ‘graciously’ agreed to hand over full custody of the pup amid their ongoing divorce.

Joe and Sofia announced their separation in July after seven years of marriage.

The former couple did not have children together; she has a 31-year-old son from her previous marriage.

Sofia adopted Bubbles – a Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix – in 2021.

The two have been handling their split amicably, with DailyMail.com insiders revealed Sofia ‘graciously’ allowed her estranged husband Joe to keep their pup – which he had already almost take exclusive ownership of since she adopted him.

‘Not in a million years would Joe part ways with his dog Bubbles and Sofia is well aware of this. Joe said Sofia was gracious about him keeping Bubbles after their break-up,’ a source close to the actor told DailyMail.com exclusively.

‘Neither one of them is bitter or out for revenge, and Sofia loves Bubbles and wants her to be happy which is precisely why she’s letting Joe have custody.

‘He said Sofia has the biggest heart and would never do anything to intentionally hurt him or Bubbles.’

They are in the process of splitting up their assets and possessions as per their prenuptial agreement.

Despite the fact that legally Sofia is Bubbles owner, it is clear in interviews Joe’s unbreakable bond with Bubbles.

Joe has not been shy stating his affection for the tiny pup, as well as holding him in almost ever post on his Instagram.

He proudly calls himself a ‘Chihuahua dad’ and has brought Bubbles with him on red carpets and TV interviews.

In July – one day before Sofia’s 51st birthday – Joe shared a cute video of Bubbles on his 10ths birthday as he spoiled the fur baby with a puppaccino.

In 2022, he said on the Kelly Clarkson Show that his wife ‘wanted the dog but the dog wanted me.’

Their split reportedly came largely from his desire to have children.

Insiders say his close bond with Bubbles has served as almost like a parent-child relationship.

‘Joe said he couldn’t imagine life without his dog and never knew that kind of love. In his mind, he already has a child,’ the insider said.

‘He said if Bubbles could speak, she would say that under no circumstances would she want to be with anyone else but Joe.’

The source added: ‘When we were working on a project together overseas, Joe took Bubbles with him everywhere. On the set, to bars, restaurants.

Their powerful noses are notorious for sniffing out treats.

But dogs are more likely to find food if they see it being hidden by a person rather than relying on scent alone, research suggests.

A team from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna conducted a study with eight dogs.

They tested the ability of each animal to find up to eight caches of food – either after seeing a human hiding them or without the dog witnessing the hiding.

The scientists discovered dogs found more of the food caches – and more quickly with less distance travelled between each – if they had seen the food being hidden.

This suggests they did not just use scent to find the food, the team said.

And it provides support for the idea that dogs are capable of observational spatial memory – the ability to remember where another individual has hidden food and pilfer it.

The researchers carried out the same study using wolves – the wild ancestor of modern dogs – with similar results.

They said: ‘While domestication probably affected dogs’ willingness to adjust to humans, the results of the current study collaborate previous findings suggesting that cognitive abilities do not differ very much between dogs and wolves.’

Separate research has found dogs can remember the location of a food item the day after it was hidden.

And while many dog owners enjoy treating their pet to a tasty snack, vets estimate that almost half of dogs in the UK are now overweight.

The 2023 welfare report from the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals revealed a third of dog owners don’t know how much their pet weighs, and 44 per cent don’t know how much it should ideally weigh.

Vets have warned treats should only make up 10 per cent of dogs’ daily calories.

The findings of the current study were published in the journal Plos One.

It’s the cruel disorder people associate with memory issues in elderly people – but dementia can also strike dogs.

If your pet is more than seven years old and suffered a sudden shift in behavior, it could be a sign of Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD).

Dog whisperer Lorna Winter said: ‘Dementia in dogs is not the same as in humans and there are a variety of dietary changes, medications and behavior therapies that can help. Always seek help from a professional first.

Winter, the co-founder of dog-training app Zigzag, added: ‘Being a dog parent isn’t always friendly cuddles and long walks, as just like humans, dogs go through different stages of life which come with specific challenges, new behaviors and changing moods.’

These are the warning signs to look out for:

Lorna Winter is a Winter, co-founder of dog training app Zigzag and a director of Britain’s Dog Behaviour Training Charter (Zigzag)

Lorna Winter is a Winter, co-founder of dog training app Zigzag and a director of Britain’s Dog Behaviour Training Charter (Zigzag)

Staring into space

Winter said: ‘All dogs stare into space at one point or another and you’ve probably thought to yourself, “What are they looking at?”

‘Dogs have different vision to us and are highly receptive to scent – so when they stare into nothing, it might be that they are trying to pay attention to a certain smell, which can look like they’re staring.

But with older dogs, staring into space can be a sign of CCD.

Winter said: ‘If you have an older dog, prolonged staring at nothing, or staring at the floor, could indicate CCD.

‘As dogs get older, they tend to slow down, and cognitive and sensory decline can happen. They’re not trying to be naughty and ignore you – it’s just part of old age.’

Struggling with basic tasks they used to do with ease

If your senior dog is struggling with simple things that they used to be able to do, this could be a sign of dementia.

Winter said: ‘Think about a door that is slightly ajar, usually a dog might think to nudge it open with their nose or paw to get inside.

‘However, a dog suffering from cognitive decline will likely end up just staring at the door because they are unable to think of the next step to get it open.

‘They might have been opening doors for years but cognitive decline means there is a lack of fuel going to your dog’s brain and they might forget how to complete simple tasks like this.

‘Another classic is “forgetting” how to back out of corners.’

Suddenly disinterested in food – or forgetting to eat

When dogs experience dementia, they have feelings of anxiety and stress because they are less sure of their surroundings and the people around them, said Winter.

This can lead to a loss of interest in food, Winter said,

Winter said: ‘A dog with CCD might also forget to eat.

‘However, there are some examples of dogs with CCD eating more than usual because they have forgotten that they’ve already eaten.

‘Either way, keeping a close eye on your senior dogs’ eating habits is a good way to spot any signs that something might be wrong.’

Restlessness and barking at night

In young dogs, barking at night can be a sign of anxiety, but in older animals (seven years old or more, depending on breed), being restless and barking at night can be a warning sign of dementia, Winter warned.

Winter said: ‘In a senior dog, becoming restless and barking at night could be a sign of age-related dementia.’

Going to the toilet indoors

Older dogs commonly ‘have accidents’ indoors if they are suffering from canine dementia, Winter said.

Our flight to New Zealand was ruined because we were sat next to a snorting, farting emotional support dog for 13 hours – it dribbled on my husband’s leg

  • Gill and Warren Press, from NZ, were on a 13 hour flight from Paris to Singapore

A couple are asking for a refund after they sat next to a ‘snorting, farting’ dog on their flight home to New Zealand from Europe.

Gill and Warren Press were on the first leg of their journey home as they flew 13 hours from Paris to Singapore on a Singapore Airlines flight.

However, the Wellington couple were forced to sit next to a passenger with an emotional support dog in their premium economy seats.

Mrs Press said the dog regularly farted and dribbled on her husband’s leg who was wearing shorts.

‘I heard this noise – a heavy snorting. I thought it was my husband’s phone, but we looked down and realised it was the dog breathing,’ Mrs Press told Stuff.

After requesting to move seats, the couple were informed the only available seats were at the back of economy so they decided to stay where they were.

They then endured an unbearable smell on the flight as the animal took up Mr Press’s legroom and farted.

As the dog could not be put in the aisle, Mrs Press said the dog was practically laying underneath her husband’s legs.

After filing a claim for compensation to the airline, they were offered a travel voucher of NZ$200 (£95) per passenger.

However, Mrs Press is arguing this is unacceptable and she now wants a full refund.

A Singapore Airlines spokesperson said the carrier was directly in contact with the couple.

‘Singapore Airlines endeavours to notify customers who may be seated next to an assistance dog prior to boarding the flight,’ they said.

‘We sincerely apologise that this did not occur in this case, and will work with our airport teams to ensure that this lapse does not occur in future.

‘In circumstances where customers seated next to an assistance dog request to be moved, Singapore Airlines will assist to re-seat customers within the same cabin where space permits.’

  • The owner was sent back home, but she has not given up hope in finding her dog

A woman was offered $1,800 from Delta Airlines after they lost her dog at Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta Airport in Georgia on August 18.

Paula Rodriguez booked a flight to San Francisco from the Dominican Republic with her dog Maia for a two-week long vacation.

During their layover in Georgia, Rodriguez was soon informed that her tourist visa ‘didn’t meet requirements’.

Her visa was then canceled as border control staff told her she had to go back home on the next flight which wasn’t until the following day.

The border patrol staff then moved her to a detention center to stay in overnight.

In this time she was not able to have her dog back and was told she would get that opportunity once she touches back down in the Dominican Republic.

According to New York Post Delta promised to keep an eye on Rodriguez’s six-year-old dog while she awaited deportation.

Their new flight back home was scheduled for 10.20am the following day where she was told her and her beloved pup would reunite, but Maia did not show up.

Rodriguez told 7NEWS: ‘I started asking questions about where she’d be spending the night, and told him that she’d been in a lot of distress on the flight.’

Maia had diarrhea and puked when they got to Atlanta.

Because of US regulations Rodriguez was not allowed to stay at the airport to wait for her dog and had to get on the flight back home without her.

The airline put her on a flight to Punta Cana, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Santo Domingo.

She hoped that the airline would put her dog on the next flight back to their home, but that never happened.

She filed a report as soon as she got to Punta Cana after Maia was nowhere to be found.

While she stayed put, her mother decided to go to the Santo Domingo airport in case the dog showed up there.

Claims were then filed at the Atlanta and San Francisco airport. Staff went around to local shelters as well, but still, no sign of the dog.

‘She’s been missing for more than 72 hours in the biggest airport in the United States,’ Rodriguez told Atlanta News First.

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is 4,700 acres.

Mia still hasn’t been found and Delta Airlines reached out to Rodriguez and offered compensation of $1,800 which her attorney’s called an ‘insult.’

In a statement Delta said that the money is not an ‘offer of compensation’ and claimed they ‘have shown sympathy through many actions, gestures and communications with our customer.’

Delta added that they remain ‘heartbroken’ over the situation.

Taking matters into her own hands, Rodriguez has turned to social media and posted videos on TikTok warning people to be on the lookout for Maia if they are at the Atlanta airport.

She has also issued a $1,000 reward for any information on where Maia might be.

Rodriguez’s sister Danielle has also created a GoFundMe dedicated to raise money to help get the best possible resources to help find Maia.

The Holiday Guru is here to answer travellers’ questions.

This week he tackles queries that revolve around airport security recognition scanners, Eurostar‘s policy around pets, easyJet flight delay compensation and more…

Q. I had a cataract removed and replaced with a new lens a few weeks ago. We are flying to Nuremberg next month – will my new eye be accepted by airport security recognition scanners? Or will I have to join queues for manual passport inspection?

Susan Trower, via email

A. Whether Nuremburg or anywhere else, the Home Office says that e-Passport gates at airports do not in fact scan eyes, stating: ‘Cataract surgery will have no implications for an individual using them’. The gates authenticate passports and then using ‘facial biometric comparison techniques to confirm the identity of the holder’. Further information can be found at ‘e-Passport gate guidance’ at gov.uk.

Q. Our easyJet flight was delayed four hours from Barcelona to Manchester. My husband got compensation [under EU regulation 261]. But I’ve been told I’m not eligible. Why is this? I sat next to my husband on the flight.

Lynne Horabin, via email

A. Because you booked your flight via a travel agent, you needed to tick a box on the compensation form that says your agent rather than you were the ‘booker’. Your husband must have done this. EasyJet says it will call and talk you through it; you are due £350 compensation.

Q. Is Eurostar planning to allow dogs to travel in the near future? I drive to southern Italy at least once a year, so I can take my dog with me, but at 1,800 miles each way, it takes its toll. I would love to go by train to Paris and onwards to Italy.

Antonio Sandivasci, via email

A. Unfortunately not. Eurostar says its trains are not equipped to safely transport dogs – and the same problem crops up at terminals in European cities. Eurostar allows only guide dogs and assistance dogs but it must be alerted in advance so staff can book a seat both for the owner and the dog (at no extra cost) to allow enough space.

Q. Will we need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel and Information Authorisation) and go through the EES (Entry/Exit System) to enter the EU from the UK in the future?

Geoff Dowdall, via email

A. Yes. ETIAS travel permits, which last three years or until your passport runs out, will cost £6 and are ‘expected’ to be introduced next year (etias.com). Meanwhile, the Entry/Exit System, which will scan passports and use biometrics, is also due next year.

Q. I plan to go to Las Vegas in December, but my passport will be beyond the ten-year period since being issued. I have extra validity on the passport beyond ten years as I renewed it early. Will I be ok?

Eddie Jones, Portsmouth

A. You’ll be fine. It is only within the EU that you must have a passport issued within ten years.

Q. My husband and I travelled to Sydney, flying with Qatar Airways from Manchester via Doha but our luggage did not arrive. We were told to purchase what we required and claim it back. After a few days, the luggage had still not come so we went to the airport. A kind official helped us find our bags, which had not cleared customs. We have made a claim for expenses from Qatar but have heard nothing. Can you help?

Christine Truslove, Bolton

A. Qatar Airways apologises for the delayed baggage and will cover your expenses.

The week before, sources claimed Adam had been secretly dating for four weeks, and the swimmer has already spent time at her family home in Rock, Cornwall.

A source told The Sun: ‘Holly is a gorgeous girl and Adam sparked up a conversation on social media. He was liking a lot of her photographs on Instagram and he’s now made a move.

‘They have been seeing each other for around a month and Adam is made up. Holly invited Adam to spend time with her at the house owned by her dad (TV chef) Gordon and mum Tana.’

‘It gave them proper alone time and made them realise they wanted to become more serious.’

Rumours began swirling between the pair when Holly posted a selfie showing her preparing for a night out at the Cannes film festival wearing only a hotel dressing gown.

Holly then finally confirmed her rumoured romance with the former Strictly star, as they appeared to enjoy a romantic week together.

The stunner – who met the athlete when her sister Tilly, 21, appeared with him on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021 – took to her Instagram to share with followers a sizzling bikini snap before tagging her new man, who was behind the camera.

This is the shocking moment a woman goes on a wild rant at her neighbor after being asked to keep her dog off their property.

Footage of their exchange has been shared on Reddit of the argument, which is believed to have happened in a suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina

According to the homeowner who started filming, the angry woman’s dog had been frequently entering her garage.

The property owner can be heard from her door camera saying: ‘You got to get your dog, you’ve got to put your dog on a leash and keep your dog out of my yard.’

The video then cuts to that of a phone camera on the sidewalk outside of the two homes.

The angry neighbor told the woman 'I will f***ing show you crazy' before launching into a rant at the woman

The angry neighbor told the woman ‘I will f***ing show you crazy’ before launching into a rant at the woman

She continues: ‘I’m not going inside, this is my property. I’m not on your property, you look crazy. You look like you lost your mind.’

Her angered neighbor can be heard screaming: ‘I will f***ing show you crazy then.’

The neighbor then appears with two other unidentified woman and sits on a chair on the sidewalk before she starts speaking what appears to be Arabic.

The woman filming continues: ‘You’re acting like a child, is this how you talk to people?’

Her neighbor then begins approaching her and grabs and pulls another woman, who is presumed to be a relative of hers, out of the way.

In a bizarre statement, she then tells the woman filming: ‘Girl you better get the f**k off of me’ followed by, ‘you’re black so you think you got rights.’

Horrified, the woman recording fires back saying: ‘Oh girl, let’s make it good. She got to say what she got to say. I’ll make sure everybody knows you’re a racist.’

Marching towards her, the angry neighbor then says: ‘You are racist, you just think you are black so you are up in my face right.

‘Oh she’s black you guys, be scared, run. I don’t give a flying f**k if you are purple.’

The woman continues: ‘You let your dog run in my garage on my property, how am I wrong.’

The entire exchanged had happened in front of the children of the angered neighbor.
