British chip designer Arm set for £40bn Wall St debut

British chip designer Arm will begin trading on Wall Street today in what is expected to be the biggest US public listing of the year.

The semiconductor firm has secured enough backing from investors to hit the top end of its £37.60 to £40.80 per share price range, which would value Arm at more than £40billion.

Just 10 per cent of shares in the Cambridge-based company are scheduled to start trading in New York today, raising about £4billion for Japanese owner SoftBank, which will retain a 90 per cent stake.

The company reportedly closed its order book early on Tuesday, indicating strong demand for the shares, most of which has come from institutional investors and tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, Google, Intel and Samsung Electronics.

Marketing efforts for the Initial Public Offering have been targeted at institutional investors, leaving retail savers to buy shares at potentially higher prices once they begin trading, according to Reuters.

Susannah Streeter, head of markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: ‘The first chance UK investors will get to snap up a slice of the company will be when the company starts trading on the NYSE and so they should be prepared for volatility that often can hit stocks after a launch onto the stock market.

‘Retail investors hoping for a front seat on Arm’s journey ahead should be mindful that the future AI landscape is hard to map.’

Arm’s core business is designing chips for smartphones – it has a 99pc share of the mobile phone market – and it is hoping to expand its reach in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The British firm’s decision to list in the US was a blow for the London Stock Exchange.

The company was founded in Cambridge in 1990 and was part of the FTSE 100 when it was publicly listed in London and New York between 1998 and 2016, before it was taken private by SoftBank.

The Japanese investor had planned to sell Arm to rival US chip firm Nvidia in 2020 but the £31billion deal fell apart after hitting regulatory hurdles.

After the deal failed, UK politicians lobbied SoftBank to have a dual listing in London as well as the New York Stock Exchange. But SoftBank snubbed the City in March, saying New York was the ‘best path forward’.

US listings have become increasingly popular tech entrepreneurs, allowing them to reach higher valuations.

Streeter added: ‘Arm was very much seen as a British success story, but owner SoftBank is pulling no sentimental punches here and wants the best bang for its buck.’

The City suffered a further setback on Tuesday as packaging giant Smurfit Kappa said it would move its premium listing from London to New York as part of a merger with US firm WestRock, meaning it will leave the FTSE 100 index.

Building supplier CRH has also announced plans to switch its primary listing to New York later this month and plumbing supplier Ferguson shifted its listing to the US last year.

Aaron Rodgers injured his left ankle after getting sacked by Leonard Floyd of the Buffalo Bills on the fourth snap in a nightmare start to his New York Jets career, ending his first game for his new team minutes after it had begun.

Rodgers was carted away for an X-Ray, which returned negative. He is expected to have an MRI scan amid significant fears he has an Achilles injury that could end his season, as well as his first Jets game.

Rodgers dropped back on first down from the Jets’ 43-yard-line and tried to roll out to his left before being sacked by Floyd for a loss of 10 yards. But his left foot appeared to get stuck in the Jets’ turf as he was being tackled.

The quarterback hit the ground and grimaced as he clambered back up to his feet for a moment, before dropping back down and sitting on the turf. He had to helped off the field as Zach Wilson made his way out to replace him. Rodgers, 39, went straight into the medical tent in scenes that left the entire NFL stunned.

The quarterback emerged to be helped onto a cart and was driven off for an X-Ray. He was listed as questionable to return but it didn’t take long for him to be officially ruled out of the rest of the game. He was seen with his left foot in a black protective boot.

‘He’s dealing with an ankle issue, we’re getting it checked out and we’ll have an update,’ Jets coach Robert Saleh said at the break between the first and second quarter.

The amount of scrutiny and excitement over Rodgers and his move to the Jets had dominated the offseason and the hype had reached new heights in the hours before Monday night’s game.

Things started quietly enough. After a 26-yard run by Breece Hall on the Jets’ opening play, Rodgers threw his first pass away after getting heavy pressure from Gregg Rousseau. Rodgers threw incomplete on the next play, but Terrel Bernard was called for defensive holding.

Then, Rodgers tried to avoid a rushing Floyd, who wrapped up the quarterback and took him down to the MetLife Stadium turf.

And in the cruelest twist of fate, his first game was over just as it had started. Rodgers looked stunned and ashen faced, albeit not in significant pain by his facial expression, with all eyes in the stadium on him rather than the play unfolding on the field itself in the immediate aftermath.

In the moment before the game began, Rodgers had played a central role in the 9/11 tributes at the stadium on the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attack.

He came out onto the field for his first game holding the American flag as fans got their first look at the quarterback who, in no uncertain terms, has underlined his dream of leading the New York team to Super Bowl glory.

Rodgers had looked like calmness personified as he warmed up for his first Jets game and even headed over to greet Jake Paul, one of the celebrities watching on in the crowd.

As a hurt Rodgers made his way off the field, coach Saleh looked lost for words as he tried to retain focus on organizing his team for the rest of the game itself.

The Jets play Dallas Cowboys next Sunday, a game that Rodgers already looks destined to miss. For both Rodgers and his team, the question marks will inevitably rest on whether the quarterback can play again this season.

Social media was immediately engulfed by speculation on how Rodgers was hurt, with one account – ProFootballDoc – suggesting Rodgers had torn his Achilles due to the way his foot had plugged in the ground.

If so, it would rule Rodgers out for the season. People typically need 4-6 months to return to normal activity from such an injury.

Rodgers has repeatedly said he won´t be one-and-done with the Jets.

He agreed in July to a restructured contract that gives him $75million in fully guaranteed money over this season and next. It amounts to a nearly $35m pay cut from the deal he had with Green Bay in which he was set to make $110m guaranteed.

There’s no doubt that Yannick Alleno is one of the world’s greatest chefs – he’s dripping in Michelin stars, with 15 across 17 restaurants around the world.

Two in France each hold three Michelin stars – Alleno Paris au Pavillon Ledoyen and Le 1947 a Cheval Blanc in France’s Courchevel 1850 ski resort.

My review of Le 1947 declared the food to be ‘out of this world’.

Now Britons have a chance to try the chef’s stellar cuisine without the faff of a trip across France – because Monsieur Alleno has launched a restaurant set within the seductively suave Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane.

It’s called Pavyllon, and it’s a game-changer – artistry and a soupcon of flamboyance, but food that’s filling, too. And the service? A masterclass in how it should be done. The wine is top-tier, too.

And what’s more, while a heavenly meal at Le 1947 costs 415 euros (£370), the prices are more down to earth at Pavylloyn, with a five-course set lunch menu available for just £55.

Before you even sit down, you’ll be feeling that whatever you’re about to shell out will be money well spent.

The restaurant is sumptuous and smothered in calming hues by acclaimed Parisian designer Chahan Minassian, who oversaw the interior design. The piece de resistance – the magnificent 30-seat wooden counter, where I sat.

Here guests can dine and watch the impressively well-drilled kitchen brigade prepare their food, with waiters and sommeliers weaving in and out of the chefs with mesmerising efficiency, never losing their cool even in the most frantic of moments and delivering the food and drink with effortless charm.

If this scene was a TV channel – I’d tune in.

The bonus on the night I visited was that Yannick himself was present, gently guiding laser-focussed head chef Benjamin Ferra Y Castell and the rest of the team, and gamely pausing from time to time to pose for photographs for guests.

I tried a £148 tasting menu with paired wines. That’s a hefty bill, but the quality never dips below impressive.

First up was a quirky number – a trio of warm potatoes glazed with lovage mayonnaise and served with cucumber and seaweed. This was followed by a refreshing ‘modern gazpacho’, served to me by (warmly smiling) Yannick himself, with cured ham and celery sorbet in the mouthwatering mix.

A beautifully cooked slice of red mullet garnished with chorizo butter and served with a chermoula sauce was the delicious third act, followed by a succulent lamb chop accompanied by green shiso coulis and moreish anchoiade.

The primary-school-aged version of me would have been licking the sauce off the plate.

Not the done thing here, so I wiped every last molecule up with some of the fantastic homemade bread that was in seemingly endless supply.

The final two acts? A duo of delectable desserts – raspberries with a coconut and dill sorbet (an unexpectedly flavoursome combination) and then a well-executed vanilla Napoleon (aka mille-feuille) with Earl Grey caramel (I felt uneasy about this one beforehand because I’m not partial to the pungent taste of Earl Grey, but the way it was blended in here was most pleasing).

By the time I’d finished dish number five I had room for only the thinnest of wafer-thin mints.

Each of the paired wines that knowledgeable head sommelier Baptiste Beaumard picked for the meal was thoughtfully matched with the food and enthusiastically presented.

He took my tastebuds from the Alsace (a white 2021 Domaine Ostertag Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes) to Austria (a knock-out Burgenland Umathum) via Normandy – a stupendous 2022 pear cider by Eric Bordelet that coupled wonderfully with the raspberry and coconut pudding.

The hospitality competition in this quarter of the UK capital has always been hot – Yannick and his able Pavyllon team have just turned up the temperature even further.

TRAVEL FACTS

Menus at Pavyllon London run from breakfast to dinner, encompassing a la carte and two tasting menus (£98 and £148 respectively) as well as a lunch-time set menu at £55.50 for five courses. Visit www.fourseasons.com/london/dining/restaurants/pavyllon-london.

Ted was hosted by Four Seasons hotels.

PROS: Suave setting, kitchen counter seating is thrilling, stellar food and wine, top service.

CONS: It’s not Yannick Alleno at his most artistic (but then, it’s probably not supposed to be) – to sample his top-level food Britons will need to travel abroad. Tasting menu is pricey.

Rating out of five: ****

The history of the world’s most popular combat sports – mixed martial arts and boxing – are inexorably linked. While both can trace their roots to the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece, MMA’s modern history owes itself to boxing.

After all, the first mixed rules fight to be televised saw ‘Judo’ Gene LeBell take on boxer Milo Savage in 1963 in an early attempt to answer the question of whether a good grappler could defeat a good boxer.

And Savage’s exploits soon convinced other boxers to compete in proto-MMA, with Muhammad Ali infamously facing Japanese pro wrestling icon Antonio Inoki in a 15-round mixed rules bout in 1976.

These days however, with MMA having grown into a legitimate sport in its own right it has become much more common to see fighters transition into the sweet science rather than the other way around.

Conor McGregor set himself up for life while putting up an admirable performance in defeat against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, but not all fighters have come away from their forays into pugilism with such happy memories.

Conor McGregor – 0-1

Regardless of your opinion on the crossover era of combat sports that it birthed, it’s hard to judge Conor McGregor’s sole outing as a professional boxer as anything other than an unqualified success.

In just over three years in the UFC, McGregor went from a highly-touted yet relatively unknown prospect to the promotion’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion with a popularity that transcended the sport as a whole.

Though there is debate whether Mayweather intentionally carried the Irishman to the later rounds when they fought, it is undeniable that McGregor’s performance surpassed the expectations of many and enshired him place as one of the world’s most recognisable athletes.

Anderson Silva – 3-2

Possibly the greatest striker ever to compete in MMA, in his prime Anderson Silva was a force of nature; capable of exposing just how rudimentary many of his opponents were on the feet.

Prior to signing with the UFC in 2006, Silva had competed in a pair of boxing matches in his native Brazil before putting his pugilism career on hold as he embarked on his legendary run inside the Octagon.

Though he suffered an ignominious exit from the promotion, Silva would find success returning to his first love, defeating former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and fellow MMA veteran Tito Ortiz before dropping a decision against Jake Paul last year.

Israel Adesanya 5-1

Much like his spiritual predecessor in the UFC’s middleweight division, Israel Adesanya combined his early MMA career with several forays into the squared circle.

Unlike some of his contemporaries on this list, the UFC Middleweight Champion fought accomplished opposition right from the start of his boxing career, losing a decision to 38-fight veteran Daniel Ammann in his pro debut.

In the following twelve months, Adesanya would fight a further five times, twice triumphing in one-night Super 8 Boxing boxing tournaments in the cruiserweight division before turning his attention back to kickboxing and MMA.

Francis Ngannou – 0-0

Much like McGregor, Francis Ngannou will make his first foray into professional boxing – whilst in the prime of his MMA career – against an elite opponent when he faces Tyson Fury in October.

Unlike McGregor though, Ngannou has ventured into the sweet science without the blessing of the UFC, and with a significantly more mixed reaction to the news from the general public.

If any fighter in the history of MMA has possessed the kind of power necessary to topple an elite heavyweight it would be Ngannou. However, the gargantuan difference in skills and boxing experience will likely see his crossover into boxing be unsuccessful, though highly lucrative.

Tom Aspinall – 1-0

Having enjoyed a successful return to the Octagon last month, Tom Aspinall is riding a wave of momentum that has seen him emerge as a potential contender for Jon Jones’ heavyweight crown.

In 2017, however, Aspinall found himself struggling to get fights on the UK’s regional circuit and briefly embarked on a career in boxing.

Training alongside Tyson Fury, Aspinall stepped into the ring for his one, and thus far only, professional boxing match that year, comfortably defeating Hungarian journeyman Tamas Bajzath via first-round knockout.

Tyron Woodley – 0-2

After Ben Askren became the first MMA fighter to be defeated by Jake Paul, his teammate Tyron Woodley was drafted in to face the ‘Problem Child’ in August of 2021.

The former UFC Welterweight Champion proved to be a tougher out for Paul, but ultimately suffered from a gun shyness that plagued his later career inside the Octagon en route to a decision defeat.

Woodley would receive a shot at redemption against Paul that same year as a late replacement, but this time would find himself on the receiving end of a brutal sixth-round KO.

Kimbo Slice – 7-0

An early star of the internet for his success in bareknuckle street fight videos, Kimbo Slice instantly became must-see TV on his transition to MMA in 2007.

After participating in the first MMA event to be shown on prime time network television in the US Slice would embark on a brief run in the UFC via The Ultimate Fighter, but was released by the promotion in 2010.

In the following years Slice would make a total of seven professional boxing appearances, winning all of his fights against low level opposition before returning to MMA to sign with Bellator in 2015 before his untimely death the following year.

Michael ‘Venom’ Page – 2-0

One of the most skilled fighters ever yet to have competed in the UFC, Michael Page has nevertheless transitioned his skills in point kickboxing into a successful career in professional combat sports.

After scoring some of the most unique KO’s in the history of MMA during his time with Bellator, Page announced he would transition to ring in 2017 after signing with former heavyweight champion David Haye.

A pair of fights under the Hayemaker Ringstar banner followed, with MVP receiving criticism from boxing analysts for showboating against in victories against opponents that were significantly below his skill level.

Clay Collard – 9-6-3

While most of his contemporaries on this list dabbled in boxing before committing to MMA, or transitioned for a high-profile crossover fight, Clay Collard took a need for quick money and turned it into an eventful career in the ring.

After winning just one of his first 5 fights, Collard developed a habit of upsetting prospects during later outings, defeating the previously 9-0 Quashawn Toler, 5-0 Raymond Guajardo and 6-0 David Kaminsky in successive fights in 2020.

Collard has since returned to pursuing MMA as his priority, and recently qualified for the PFL lightweight playoffs where he will face fellow UFC veteran Shane Burgos later this month’s for a place in the promotions final with $1million at stake.

Clay Collard enjoyed several upset victories inside the ring before returning to MMA full-time

Nate Diaz – 0-0

Though he has long been admired for his boxing skills within MMA, Saturday’s clash with Jake Paul will mark Nate Diaz’s maiden outing as a professional boxer.

The Stockton native’s combination punching, seemingly endless cardio, and ability to absorb punishment has seen him defeat several top names in the UFC including Conor McGregor and he will hoping those skills carry over to the boxing ring when he takes on Paul in the event broadcast on DAZN on Saturday night.

While Nate hasn’t competed in boxing, brother Nick Diaz did make a sole foray into the sport in 2005, defeating Alfonso Rocha before returning to the UFC.

It’s the world’s biggest cruise ship and tickets are selling by the boatload.

Royal Caribbean has revealed that Icon of the Seas has been the fastest-selling ship in a maiden season in the cruise line’s history, with only limited spaces available for its debut Caribbean voyage in January 2024, which will depart from Miami.

And with CEO Michael Bayley telling investors this year that Icon of the Seas – which has a capacity for 7,600 guests – is the ‘best-selling product in the history of the business’, the mood at Royal Caribbean is undoubtedly buoyant.

Royal Caribbean’s floating city has been filmed out on the open water for the first time as she underwent sea trials ahead of her public launch.

Icon of the Seas sailed hundreds of miles on the open sea before returning to the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, where she’s currently under construction.

Incredible video footage shows the colossal vessel, which is 1,198ft (365m) long and weighs 250,800 gross tonnes, gliding through the water, dwarfing the tug boats deployed to help steer her.

The camera also spins around the multi-coloured slides on the upper deck of the vessel. They are among some of the standout features on board, which will also include the first suspended infinity pool at sea and a three-storey family suite.

A third scene offers a close-up of the ship’s livery, while other clips show workers testing the ship’s key technical areas.

Carrying out the sea trials involved more than 2,000 specialists, four 37 to 67-tonne tugboats and more than 350 hours of work, Royal Caribbean reveals.

It notes that during the trials, preliminary tests were carried out on everything from the main engines and the hull to the ship’s brake system, steering and noise levels.

However, it says that Icon of the Seas passed its first sea trials’ with flying colours’, with its second sea trial due to take place later this year.

The latest construction update for the ship is that the ‘crew neighbourhood’ is being built. A space spread over four decks, it’s designed to be a ‘home away from home’ for the 2,350 crew members on board.

Icon of the Seas is taking the title of the world’s biggest cruise ship from another Royal Caribbean vessel, Wonder of the Seas, which is slightly smaller at 1,187ft (362m) long and a weight of 236,857 gross tonnes.

The ship’s three-storey family suite comes complete with its own white picket fence and mailbox. Other room options for guests include the ‘Surfside Family Suite’, with alcoves for kids ‘tucked away from the adults’, ‘Sunset Corner Suites’ and ‘Panoramic Ocean View’ quarters.

Once they’re out of bed, guests will find so many water features they may have trouble distinguishing the boat from the ocean.

For starters, Icon of the Seas will feature the largest waterpark at sea – called ‘Category 6’ – containing six ‘record-breaking’ slides: ‘Pressure Drop’ and its 66-degree incline – ‘the industry’s first open free-fall slide’; the 46ft- (14m) tall ‘Frightening Bolt’, the tallest drop slide at sea; ‘Storm Surge’ and ‘Hurricane Hunter’, the first family raft slides at sea – and ‘Storm Chasers’, which Royal Caribbean claims is ‘cruising’s first mat-racing duo’.

The waterpark will be on Thrill Island, which Royal Caribbean trumpets as a ‘lost island adventure where vacationers can test their limits and scale new heights’.

Icon of the Seas will also debut the line’s first swim-up bar at sea – called ‘Swim & Tonic’ – and ‘Royal Bay Pool’, the ‘largest pool at sea’. Both of these features will be on ‘Chill Island’.

The suspended infinity pool, meanwhile, will be in an area called The Hideaway and surrounded by a multi-level sun terrace with whirlpools.

Once guests have dried off they’re sure to be lured to ‘AquaDome’, a ‘transformational place unlike any other’ that’s perched at the top of the ship.

Royal Caribbean describes it as a ‘tranquil oasis by day’, where guests can enjoy a bite or drink while soaking up wraparound ocean views and gazing at an ‘awe-inspiring waterfall’.

By night, we’re told, the venue becomes ‘a vibrant place that’s great for a night out, complete with restaurants, bars and aqua shows’.

The vessel will sail seven-night Caribbean voyages throughout 2024. And in 2025? Another Icon-class ship will be launching. Watch this space.

Royal Caribbean said: ‘Since we revealed Icon of the Seas in October 2022, we have seen an incredible reaction. This interest contributed to the single largest bookings day and highest volume booking week in Royal Caribbean’s 54-year history when we opened Icon for sale. The ship has continued to be one of the strongest preforming in our fleet with sailings across its maiden season sold out. In fact, we have seen the one-of-a-kind Ultimate Family Townhouse sold across all of 2023.

‘With a more than 50-year history in building incredible ships and delivering memorable vacations to millions of guests, we are excited to officially welcome it to the fleet in January 2024.’

Watching raunchy scenes with parents is a somewhat uncomfortable feat.

But it’s clearly not an issue for Damian Hurley, who has directed his mother in frisky scenes with another woman.

The budding filmmaker, 21, has marked his writing and directorial feature debut with upcoming mystery drama Strictly Confidential.

Risqué pictures show model Elizabeth Hurley, who plays Lily, appearing to be seduced by Natasha, played young actress Pear Chiravara.

Ms Hurley, 58, dressed in a plunging metallic gown, accepts a drink from Ms Chiravara, who then starts to kiss her chest.

Damian praised his mother for sticking to her promise to star in his first feature film when shooting wrapped in December on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Sharing behind-the-scenes pictures on Instagram, he wrote: ‘Everyone involved deserves public declarations of adoration (all of which will come in due course) but right now I want to worship @ElizabethHurley1 who, during the making of my first ever short film back in 2010 (when I was 8) promised me she’d be in my first feature; true to her word, the minute this film was greenlit, Mama dropped everything and raced out to the beautiful Caribbean to help. Working together was a dream.’

The mystery drama follows Mia, played by CBBC star Georgia Lock, as she is drawn into a ‘world of sex, duplicity and betrayal’ while trying to uncover the mystery surrounding her best friend Rebecca’s suicide.

Damian, who graduated last summer, was praised by his famous friends including Trinny Woodall who said: ‘What an amazing achievement Damien, after all your passion and hard work, it’s paid off well done darling, so so happy for you and it really does help to have the best mama in the world.’

Susannah Constantine added: ‘Beauty AND brains.’

It is not the first time Ms Hurley has starred in one of her son’s projects.. She also flew out to Saint Kitts and Nevis for his short film, The Boy on the Beach, last year.

Ms Hurley’s previous roles include The Royals, Bedazzled and Austin Powers.

In 2018 she revealed the secret photographer behind her seemingly endless stream of bikini Instagram posts was in fact her only son.

Damian’s shadow is even visible in some of the images, where she frolics on the beach in a two-piece swimsuit.

She made the revelation after uploading a series of sizzling holiday snaps of herself braless and in a bikini for Valentine’s Day.

The actress, who rose to fame at 29 with her Estee Lauder cosmetics campaign, stunned her 833,000 followers with the suggestive images, but some were unsure how to take her confession, with several branding the relationship ‘weird’.

According to The Sun, Ms. Hurley said: ‘[Damian] definitely takes some, but I do have other friends that I can torture for some too.’

Damian, who was brought up in Gloucester by his mother and her then-partner Arun Nayar, has followed in her footsteps to become an actor.

He has had roles in Australian soap Neighbours and American drama The Royals.

His father was American businessman and film producer Steve Bing, who committed suicide in 2020 by jumping from the 27th floor of his Los Angeles condominium.

A teenager in love –with the Fifties: Jake Bugg’s debut album is almost too good to be true

Jake Bugg: Jake Bugg. Mercury, out October 15

Rating: 4 Star Rating

Plenty of noise has been made to mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first single. And rightly so, because Love Me Do is as close as pop gets to Neil Armstrong setting foot on the Moon. It was both a small step and a giant leap: a modest little number and the start of the greatest recording career of all.

There’s just one problem. With The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan also  celebrating golden jubilees, there is a danger that 1962 will become engraved on the public consciousness as pop’s Year Zero. In fact, all these titans started by looking back more than they looked forward.

Dylan borrowed tunes and themes from folk songs by Woody Guthrie and others. When Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who had been contemporaries at primary school, bumped into each other again as teenagers at Dartford station, they bonded over some blues LPs.

JAKE'S PROGRESS: The 18-year-old Jake Bug's debut is a near

JAKE’S PROGRESS: The 18-year-old Jake Bug’s debut is a near

Two of The Beatles – Paul and Ringo – had fathers who worked on the cruise ships sailing in and out of Liverpool, and both men brought records from America back for their sons. The Beatles, like the Stones, were a covers band first, and when they did start writing, Lennon and McCartney followed trails blazed in the Fifties. ‘No Shadows, no Beatles,’ was George Harrison’s tersely eloquent tribute to the best British band before his. And the Shadows’ place in that sentence could just as well have gone to the Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry or Carl Perkins.

Lest we forget how good the music of the late Fifties was, here comes a new voice who seems hellbent on reminding us. And the extraordinary thing is, he wasn’t born till 1994. Jake Bugg, an 18-year-old from Nottingham, is almost too good to be true: he could be a member of the skiffle band in the play One Man, Two Guvnors.

His look is that of a mid-Sixties pop star – dark fringe, cute face, a hint of attitude and vulnerability. But his sound comes straight from the late Fifties. Fresh, clear and uncluttered, it is mostly just a voice (nasal twang, crisp diction) and a guitar (a Telecaster, bustling, bursting with life). It’s as if Buddy Holly had grown up on a council estate in the East Midlands.

The 14 songs here are short, sharp and engaging. The fast ones are rock ’n’ roll with a touch of folk or blues, while the slow ones lean towards country. These are old, old forms, and many of today’s teenagers have given up on them, preferring hip-hop, dance music or indie. But Bugg makes them young again, and adds a  dollop of contemporary jadedness (one song is entitled Seen It All) that takes him close to the best of Noel Gallagher.

The album gets off to a scorching start with singles Lightning Bolt and Two Fingers before slowing down and becoming more middling in the second half. If Bugg had restricted himself to his strongest  ten songs, it would be a masterpiece, but  consistency is a lot to ask of a teenager.

At his best, he is superb. ‘I drink to remember,’ he announces over a rhythmic strum, ‘I smoke to forget’: a self-portrait painted in two brushstrokes. When he sings of yesterday, he doesn’t tell us he believes in it; he holds two fingers up to it. Spending time with his album makes you want to see him live. He is doing a short tour in November and a longer one in February.

Jessie Ware, a gifted backing singer, has made an album of her own, Devotion, one of the Mercury Prize Albums of the Year. In the intimate surroundings of St Luke’s church, she was likeable between songs (‘great honour to be on the shortlist for the Mercurys, I watch it every year’) and a curious mixture during them, veering from powerful to tentative.

Ware’s album has done much better in the charts than her singles, which seems the wrong way round. The singles Running, 110% and Wildest Moments are her strongest tracks: sophisticated electronic soul, skilfully played by her supple three-man band. Warming to the task, she allows herself some unfettered fervour, which makes a nice contrast to the severe  elegance of her look. It’s like watching Sade and the Banshees.
