A huge crowd lined the street in Costa Rica to accompany the coffin of football player Jesus Lopez Ortiz who was savaged by a crocodile while taking a dip in the river to cool off.

Crowds can be seen clapping and cheering, with some carrying instruments and white balloons, as a silver van holding the fallen athlete slowly edges forward during the nighttime procession in Guanacaste Province.

The mourners then followed the vehicle to an event where loved ones held up his trophies and portraits as they comforted one another.

‘Today we said goodbye to you “Chucho”; today, around a thousand people accompany you representing all your friends, family, and the entire country that was with you,’ Deportivo Rio Cañas, the football team for which he played, said in a Facebook post.

Lopez Ortiz, whose nickname was ‘Chucho’, died aged 29 after he was mercilessly killed by the reptile on July 29 in a river in Río Cañas in Guanacaste.

At the funeral ceremony last week, Chucho’s mother gave thanks for all the emotional and financial support she has received since her son passed way.

‘There are no words, I know God will bless them… if it hadn’t been for them, I don’t know what I would have done,’ Giselle Ortiz Cubillo said.

Horrific images of the footballer’s death show the father-of-two fighting for life as he is carried away by the animal in its jaws.

Another clip shows the croc being shot dead in the water and carried to the riverbank, with local residents saying that they followed it in a canoe to recover Chucho’s body.

His team said in a social media post last week: ‘We will remember you in the many facets of your sporting life as a coach, football player and also as a family father. You will always live in our hearts Chucho, fly high friend.’

Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy prohibits the hunting or killing of protected animals such as crocodiles.

It is not currently known if the department is looking into the locals’ decision to kill the crocodile so locals could collect the body.

Local police said in a statement: ‘It should be clarified that all efforts were made to rescue the body of the deceased person without causing damage to the reptile, which was not possible.’

A Christian street preacher was arrested for protesting an LGBTQ pride event – only for the charges to be thrown out when the local DA agreed that detaining him violated his First Amendment rights.

Damon Atkins, 41, was seen on camera holding a sign at the Pride event on June 3 in the city of Reading that read ‘Jesus said go and sin no more’ and was quoting Bible verses at the marchers.

Police came over and confronted Atkins, who pointed out that he was on public property.

The officer can be seen telling him while ‘it is public property’ he should ‘let them have their day’ and ‘respect it’ – referring to those celebrating Pride.

Atkins can be heard replying: ‘Know who’s cheering for us? The people who are in Hell. So you do you and I’m going to do me.’

The First Amendment states that: ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.’

Those words guarantee Americans complete freedom of speech and expression, however offensive their words.

Unlike other countries including the UK, the US does not have any hate speech laws, meaning Americans can say whatever they like in public without fear of legal reprisals.

As the video continues, Atkins can be seen continuing to preach a verse from Corinthians when Officer Bradley McClure is heard saying: ‘That’s it, you’re done’ before putting Atkins into handcuffs.

Atkins is then taken off and put against a wall to be secured – as applause rings out from people in the background attending the Pride event.

‘I can’t believe this is happening in Reading,’ a person can be heard saying off camera.

Matthew Wear, who took the video, added that it was ‘an incredible providence that the Lord is allowing me to film this.’

Reading Police Chief Richard Tornielli said that Atkins was only arrested because he was being ‘disorderly’ and had nothing to do with the content of his speech.

‘Our officers gave him warnings to cease that behavior as it was disrupting the event that was taking place,’ he told WFMZ

The city of Reading’s Pride events are believed to be the first public ones in its history, according to local reports.

Tornelli complained later in the week of getting ‘hundreds of calls on phone lines that are used for emergency and non-emergency requests for police assistance’ complaining about Atkins arrest.

He even suggested that the ‘inappropriate and vile language’ and possible threats used may see them pursue charges against anyone calling in.

However, Atkins had the charges against him dropped on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Berks County District Attorney’s Office.

‘After a review of the incident which took place on June 3, 2023, in the 800 block of Washington Street in the City of Reading, the District Attorney’s Office has withdrawn the charges of disorderly conduct filed against Damon Atkins.’

‘The charges were withdrawn after the District Attorney’s Office reviewed the videos of the incident along with applicable case law.’

Steinbaugh, an attorney for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, said he’s ‘relieved but still found the entire ordeal ludicrous.’

‘Damon should never have been in handcuffs in the first place and the city needs to take measures to correct its officer’s misconduct and ensure that its officers will not violate the First Amendment in the future,’ Steinbaugh added.

Atkins spoke on Tuesday about his arrest with CBN, saying he was thankful for the support he received even before the charges were dropped.

‘I don’t want anyone to think that I hate anyone. I love my neighbor as Lord Jesus has taught me to love myself, that’s why I was there,’ he said.

He did say, however, say it was ‘scary’ to see drag queens in public, especially around children.

‘I need to warn my brothers and sisters – and I’m not just talking about them – I like to talk about Jesus and I warn everyone. There’s people who come up to me who are living in woeful sin. It’s not just homosexuals.’

Shocking footage has revealed the scale of Philadelphia’s untamed ‘tranq’ epidemic, which has transformed the city’s streets into a drug-infested hellhole.

The Kensington neighborhood – known as ‘ground zero’ for the city’s drug crisis – is seen littered with zombie-like addicts, with many shamelessly shooting up in broad daylight.

Gruesome scenes in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ show droves of homeless addicts aimlessly staggering through the streets, surrounded by tents and scattered trash

The harrowing situation is fueled by the rise of the drug Xylazine, also known as ‘tranq’ – a lethal sedative that is often used to enhance the effects of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine.

Philadelphia has become overwhelmed with drug-fueled crime under woke District Attorney Larry Krasner, a self-described ‘progressive prosecutor.’

His failure to clamp down on crimes and handling of the city’s drug crisis led to his impeachment in 2022 for ‘dereliction of duty’, however he remains in office after his impeachment trial was indefinitely postponed.

But the effects of his tenure has seen tranq take over the streets of Philadelphia, with new footage showing a mass of addicts hunched over in a stupor or passed out on the sidewalk.

‘I’ve never seen human beings remain in these kinds of conditions,’ said Sarah Laurel, who runs outreach organization Savage Sisters, earlier this year.

‘They have open, gaping wounds, they can’t walk, and they tell me, ‘If I go to the hospital, I’m going to get sick. They’re so terrified of the detox.’

Earlier this year, disturbing photographs obtained by DailyMail.com laid bare the scale of the city’s tragic drug problem.

Amid a flood of the popular and dangerous drug, the sidewalks are more reminiscent of a scene from the Walking Dead than a bustling metro.

Tranq can be consumed in a number of ways as it is mixed with other substances to enhance its ‘high’ – which has a similar effect to other opioid drugs.

Users are seen smoking, snorting, injecting, swallowing and inhaling the drug, with some even seen injecting it between the toes in their feet.

The effects of the drug appear very similar to that of an overdose, as victims suffer from an uncontrolled stupor of sedation, slowed breathing and unconsciousness.

Xylazine also often causes raw, gaping wounds on its victims, many of whom are found suffering from gruesome injuries while they lay among garbage and syringes.

Startling figures also found that tranq had been found in more than 90 percent of fentanyl samples in Philadelphia, and emergency rooms have reportedly seen skin and soft tissue injuries increase four-fold in the last three years.

The above graph shows the CDC estimates for the number of deaths triggered by drug overdoses every year across the United States. It reveals figures have now reached a record high, and are surging on the last three years

Deaths caused by fentanyl in the US surged in the 2010s. At the start of the decade, 2,666 Americans died of a fentanyl overdose. This figure shot up to 19,413 by 2016. Covid made the situation worse, with a record 72,484 deaths recorded in 2021

Users roam the streets in a trance-like state while on the drug, unaware of their movements and sprawled out on the filthy sidewalks.

It has taken center stage on the drug market as a powerful cutting agent, and the zombie-like drug is one of the most addictive substances on the black market.

Philip Moore, chief medical officer for the nonprofit treatment provider Gaudenzia, previously detailed how weaning people off Xylazine is a complicated procedure.

‘We’ll start treating for opioid withdrawal, and they should be getting better — but we’ll see chills, sweating, restlessness, anxiety, agitation,’ he said.

‘They’re very, very unpleasant symptoms. That’s what triggers us that we’re dealing with a more complicated withdrawal, that there’s more xylazine in the mix.’

He said he had prescribed clonidine and lofexidine, both medications for high blood pressure, to get patients through withdrawal, as well as sedatives such as phenobarbital or Valium.

Moore said there needs to be better education for medical practitioners, to enable them to deal with the withdrawal symptoms.

‘The challenge is educating other physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and the community,’ he said.

‘If we don’t recognize xylazine withdrawal, patients are really uncomfortable and they’ll leave treatment because they don’t feel like they’re getting better.’

Philadelphia is not alone in its struggle to contain rampant drug addiction.

In 2021, there were over 107,000 deaths from drug overdoses, an increase of nearly 15 percent from the year prior.

National trends indicate the numbers of drug deaths continue to soar, with tranq and fentanyl ‘zombies’ slumped on streets across America.

‘This is the picture of addiction… This is what happens’: Mother of xylazine overdose victim describes her son’s addiction

Nora Sheehan lost her son Andrew Jugler, 29, in October, 2021, after he took a deadly concoction of xylazine and fentanyl following an eight-year battle with addiction.

She said her son’s addiction began after he started taking the oxycontin painkiller in 2010, but then gradually progressed to heroin and fentanyl.

In the wake of her loss, Sheehan, 56, shared a photo of her last moments with her son on social media to try and raise awareness about the devastating impact of the opioid crisis.

‘Holding my dead son in my arms, this is the picture of addiction… This is what happens,’ caption Sheehan, from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

The administrative coordinator feared for her son when he joined a group living in the woods in Elkton, Maryland last summer at the height of his addiction.

She and Andrew’s two sisters, Candace Jugler, 38, and Haley Jugler, 30, tried to enroll him in a rehab program but failed.

She said: ‘When he moved to the woods I asked him if I could buy him a new tent or a new sleeping bag but he refused. I begged him to come home.

‘While I was trying to drive Andrew to a detox center in September he opened the door while my car was going 60 miles per hour as if to throw himself out.

‘I stopped the car and started screaming. I asked him in that moment where he wanted to be buried.’

The 29-year-old died on October 7 but it was two days before Ms Sheehan could identify her son’s body.

Ms Sheehan said: ‘I couldn’t grieve until I saw him. Until then I had been holding out hope.

‘They told me to prepare for the smell in the room, because his body had been outside for a while in the hot weather.

‘That was the farthest thing from my mind. I wanted to hold him and hug him one last time.

‘Andrew was incredibly kind and caring. He was a self-made mechanic and so loved by all of us, by his sisters and his niece and his stepdad.’

Instead of a traditional funeral service, Ms Sheehan and her family held a memorial service in his name and invited Andrew’s friends, who were battling homelessness and addiction.

She added: ‘I hope that sharing this image will impact addicts but mainly I hope the rest of us stop walking around blindly.

‘I never thought heroin and fentanyl were as prevalent in my community as they are. It’s an epidemic.’

Republican Party presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy has donated $10,000 to a crowdfunding effort for Daniel Penny who was charged with second-degree manslaughter for the death of a homeless schizophrenic.

The GiveSendGo fundraising campaign – which has now soared to $2 million in donations – was set up by the 24-year-old ex-marine’s attorneys after a video emerged of him holding Jordan Neely in a chokehold on a New York City subway on May 1.

They say it will be used to pay for the Long Island native’s legal fees and for ‘any future civil lawsuits that may arise, as well as expenses related to his defense.’

On May 5, Rawaswamy tweeted his opinions on the case, stating that Jordan Neely was a ‘habitual offender’ who should have ‘faced justice’ earlier.

He went on to list a series of crimes which Neely had been arrested for in the past eight years.

He penned: ‘The moral of the Jordan Neely story isn’t complicated: he was a habitual offender who should’ve been behind bars or in a mental institution, not free to terrorize New Yorkers. If local police had been allowed to do their jobs, that man would still be alive today – in custody.

‘In 2015, Jordan Neely kidnapped a 7 year old girl. In 2019, Jordan Neely punched a 64 year old man in the face. In 2021, Jordan Neely slugged a 67 year old woman in the face as she exited the subway, breaking her nose and fracturing her orbital bone. Neely was arrested 44 times, but never faced real justice for terrorizing New Yorkers. The @ManhattanDA shares responsibility for his death for creating an anti law enforcement culture. Habitual felons like Neely should not roam freely to terrorize & prey on innocent members of our communities.’

On Friday, Penny was freed pending trial hours after turning himself in at a police precinct and appearing in court to answer criminal charges. He did not enter a plea.

On Sunday, the campaign page hit the £1 million mark after Florida governor Ron DeSantis shared a Twitter link to the page – showing that support for the former soldier has soared quickly.

Many of those who have donated large sums to Penny’s cause are anonymous, including another who also made a $10,000 pledge.

They left a comment which read: ‘Thank you for protecting the citizens that day.’

The third highest giver, who pledged $5,000, is also anonymous.

That person wrote: ‘Do the right thing. Dan did. It’s not that tough.’

Following his arrest, Bail bondsman Ira Judelson told DailyMail.com Penny was ‘very quiet and nervous’ and was ‘respectful’.

While Penny was charged in the aftermath— the other two men seen in the video seen holding Neely down were never named nor charged with any wrongdoing.

Now, Penny’s family says, the Marine vet is being ‘railroaded’ by the legal system.

‘It’s disgusting,’ Justine Baldwin, Penny’s cousin, told the New York Post. ‘Here’s a young man who served our country.’

‘What about the other two gentlemen on the subway who were helping him (restrain Neely)? They haven’t even been named.’

While footage of Penny restraining Neely sparked controversy, his relatives have described him as ‘calm’ and a ‘fun kid’.

Some have attempted to depict the veteran as a privileged individual in the aftermath of the incident, but those that knew him revealed he grew up in a middle-class military family in Long Island.

‘He was always there for his family and his sisters,’ added Baldwin. ‘Danny has always been calm, he comes from a calm family.’

Neighbors reportedly added that he even lived out of a van at one time, while he previously shared a three-bedroom home with his three sisters and parents.

‘Danny was always fun and goofy and never harmed anyone,’ said the Marine’s friend Devin Marino.

‘He was always super inclusive,’ he added. ‘His family was really nice and had an open door policy.’

Neighbors who knew Penny and his family in West Islip also praised the veteran, with Marcia Mulcahy, who lived across the street from him for four years, describing him as ‘a lovely kid.’

‘The family could not have been nicer,’ she added. ‘Just look at the fundraiser to see how people feel about him.

‘We’re all contributing to it. He was just trying to help on the subway. It was obviously a scary situation and it all went wrong. But he didn’t go in there trying to hurt anyone. He was trying to help.’

Penny’s lawyer, Thomas Kenniff, revealed the veteran had been deployed twice over four years of service with the Marines, where he rose to the rank of sergeant before he was honorably discharged in 2021.

A stressed bull suffered incurable catastrophic injuries after leaping over a wall with a sheer drop behind it during a Spanish festival.

The 91-stone (580 kilograms) animal, called Vicioso, was sedated before being put to sleep after vets concluded nothing could be done to save it.

Dramatic footage showed the bull jumping 50ft into the abyss after it was let loose to charge at crowds during the Bou de les Penyes festival in the Valencian municipality of Ontinyent on Saturday.

Revelers gasped and put their hands to their heads in shock when the animal went over the edge of the low stone wall without seeing what lay behind it.

The animal crash-landed on the hard edge of a river bed near a bridge a few feet upstream.

Vicioso was the second bull to appear during the fourth day of the bullfighting and running festivities.

All was proceeding as normal until the animal slipped free from his rope and ran along the curved edge of a road at a high speed.

Upon reaching the bend in the road that crosses the town’s Pont Vell bridge, without slowing down, the powerful animal leapt clean over the parapet of the bridge, which stands just over half a metre high.

‘These are unexpected accidents’, said Vicioso’s owners. ‘With brave bulls, you never know how they are going to react or behave. In this case there was a low wall, and he came out very strongly. It is clear that he saw it as an opening’.

Saturday’s incident led to a suspension of the festivities.

German Zaragoza, who had helped organise them, said: ‘This was a tragic accident of the sort that happen rarely.

‘The bull was coming down the slope very fast and jumped without seeing what was behind the wall.

‘The veterinary service acted very quickly to sedate it.’

A spokesman for the livestock farm which had raised Vicioso added: ‘With fighting bulls like these you never know how they’re going to react or behave.

‘In this case there was a low barrier, it went off very fast, and obviously it saw a clearing in the crowd.’

But critic Marco Pereira raged: ‘This is pure and utter barbarianism.

‘There’s no tradition here, it’s idiocy.’

Another enraged local said: ‘It’s shameful that people still play with animals.’

An 82-year-old man had to be hospitalised after being tossed in the air by a bull in Ontinyent last December. Initial reports at the time said he had suffered bad injuries but medics later confirmed the animal’s horns had pads on them which saved the pensioner’s life.

Researcher Rosa Fernandez found last year 34.7 per cent of the Spanish population supported festivities involving bulls and wanted to keep them, 44.1 per cent wanted them banned and 21.2 per cent were against them but did not want them banned.

Aaron Rodgers looks like he is already loving life in New York as he attended the Rangers playoff game against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

And if he was in any doubt about just how much his move has enraptured the city, he now knows exactly how hyped Jets fans are now after receiving a massive cheer when his face appeared on the screen at MSG.

Rodgers, a four-time MVP, looked humbled by the reception before appearing to mouth ‘Let’s Go’ at the camera.

The Rangers even shared the clip themselves on Twitter, saying: ‘GREAT CHOICE, AARON. Welcome to the best city in the world.’

The new Jets quarterback watched the playoff game alongside new teammate Breece Hall and Allen Lazard, who like Rodgers has joined the Jets from the Green Bay Packers.

Connor McGovern and Tim Boyle were also in attendance with the trio – Lazard, Hall and McGovern were even pictured in Rangers jerseys.

The Jets shared a picture of the group, captioned: ‘Boys night out.’

Rodgers appeared to be a good luck charm for his new local hockey team, as well. The Rangers won 5-2 on Saturday night and take the series with the Devils down to Game 7.

And Lazard later shared a clip on his Instagram story celebrating a goal with Rodgers, with the two of them singing along to the Rangers goal song.

It comes as Rodgers’ new coach at the Jets, Robert Saleh, hailed his short-term impact on the team.

‘It’s been a fun week, a fun week,’ he said, according to ESPN. ‘To get Aaron here, it’s a blessing. We got a lot better this week – a lot better this week.

‘We’re a really, really young team, especially on offense, and just to watch him and Nathaniel (Hackett) and the way they communicate together, he’s already made his presence felt with regards to meetings and input, just discussions on all of the different things we’re trying to get accomplished on offense.

‘He’s a tremendous human, first and foremost, Aaron is. Just listening to him, there are little, subtle things I’m not going to get into, but he definitely cares about people and you can tell in the way he speaks to people. So we’re really fortunate that he’s here.’

The 39-year-old Rodgers said at his unveiling on Wednesday that he wanted Super Bowl glory with the Jets – the team have not got their hands on the Vince Lombardi trophy since 1969.

‘I’m an old guy. So I want to be part of a team that can win it all. I believe this is a place we can get it done,’ Rodgers said of the Jets’ Super Bowl chances.

‘I noticed, walking in this morning that Super Bowl III trophy is looking a little lonely. I really believe this is where I’m meant to be.

‘This is a surreal day for me. After spending 18 years in the same city…I’m here because I believe in this team and I believe in coach Saleh. I think the excitement of a new chapter has been fueling my offseason workout.’

And after such a big welcome at MSG, Rodgers must only feel more confident he has made the correct decision.
