Country singer Zach Bryan is seen in new bodycam footage telling cops he’s a ‘famous musician’ after being stopped for speeding

  • Zach Bryan, 27, had been pulled over for speeding in Verdigris, Oklahoma on Sept. 4,  three days before his Sept. 7 run-in with cops in Vinita, Oklahoma
  • Bryan did not want to disclose his address and later revealed to the officer that he was a ‘famous musician’

Country singer Zach Bryan is seen in new bodycam footage telling police officers that he’s a ‘famous musician’ during his arrest earlier this month.

Bryan, 27, had been pulled over for speeding in Verdigris, Oklahoma on September 4, three days before his September 7 run-in with cops in Vinita, Oklahoma.

During the September 4 incident, Bryan was pulled over for going 68mph in a 50mph zone and handcuffed. Bodycam footage shows the officer asking Bryan where he currently lives and the singer responding that he ‘doesn’t really feel comfortable sharing his address.’

On the video, he reiterates that he ‘doesn’t feel comfortable’ sharing where he lives. The officer urges him to provide the information he needs for the ticket, or informs him that he will go to jail. Then asked again, ‘are you going to give me the information I need?’

Bryan snapped, ‘I don’t know the address, sir,’ before the officer responded, ‘Why didn’t you just say that, but the singer quipped,  ‘because I don’t think it’s any of your business where I live. I’m a famous musician, and I don’t want people knowing where I live.’

The country crooner apologized to the officer and was let go with a warning.

On September 7,  Bryan had his second run-in with the law after he was charged with obstruction of an investigation on September 7 after he was taken into custody in Vinita, Oklahoma.

He called himself a ‘dumbass’ who ‘acted like an idiot’ after he was taken into custody on September 7 after a clash with highway cops in Vinta, Oklahoma

In a video he posted, he said that an officer came up to his window and asked for his driver’s license, registration and home address. He said he refused to give out his address because he is a recognized musician.

However, the officer then threatened to arrest Bryan – but he wouldn’t budge. He was held in custody in the Craig County Jail in connection with the obstruction of an investigation. He bonded out nearly and hour and a half after being booked.

He tweeted an apology on his social media on Thursday and spoke of the ordeal.

‘Today I had an incident with Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Emotions got the best of me and I was out of line with the things I said. I support law enforcement as much as anyone can, I was just frustrated in the moment, it was unlike me and I apologize,’ the singer said.

A group of five French tourists and one Swiss tourist have been arrested after a British teenager was allegedly gang-raped in the holiday resort of Magaluf.

A judge in capital Palma found there were video clips of the alleged rape on at least one of the suspects’ phones, police said.

She met the suspected rapists on Monday night and later went to the hotel room of one of the suspects, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the six, the police press office in Mallorca cited the alleged victim’s statement as saying.

The Civil Guard showed up at the hotel after receiving a phone call from the hotel’s security staff who found the young woman crying in desperation.

Police detained the suspects, all of whom are over 20, shortly after.

In the first pictures of the six men, one of the suspects held his head down and stared at the ground as he was led into a court in the Majorcan capital Palma in handcuffs by a Civil Guard officer

All the suspects were escorted into the court building in Palma in handcuffs.

Although the suspects are being held in jail, none of them has been formally charged as yet, as the investigation is ongoing. There were no details released on their identities nor that of the alleged victim.

Detectives inspected the room where the alleged assault occurred and reviewed CCTV footage of the hotel entrance as part of the ongoing investigation.

A medic checked the woman over and is said to have found grip marks on her arms.

Earlier this month, a 21-year-old British woman told Greek police that she was raped by an Israeli man after meeting him in a nightclub in Athens.

The young tourist was allegedly attacked at the man’s home in the early hours the previous week after a night out in the Keramikos area.

She told police that during the sexual assault, the man’s three friends appeared out of nowhere and filmed her with their mobile phones.

The woman, who had been partying with her friend from Portugal beforehand, told the group she was leaving but the man refused to stop the act, according to local media

After a struggle the woman managed to escape the property and told police of the incident.

A case has been filed against the Israeli man for rape.

Just last month another British tourist accused a 47-year-old Greek man of raping her in a hotel while on holiday on the island of Rhodes, according to local media.

The 21-year-old said she was attacked at around 2am on July 3 in Pefkos and made a complaint to the local police hours later, prompting a case to be opened.

According to Greece‘s ANT1News, the young woman’s lawsuit claims the older man took her from a ‘health care store’ in Lindos, found on the south of the island, to a hotel in Pefkos – the main city on the island that sits around 15 miles from Turkey.

There, the outlet reports, the woman claims the man forced her to have sex with him through threats of physical violence.

Upon making her complaint, the police asked a medical examiner to carry out an assessment, ANT1News said.

She handed over the clothes she was wearing on the night which were reportedly sent to Greece’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations for DNA testing.

According to the same publication, a second British woman made a complaint over an incident in Faliraki – seven miles south of Pefkos – 24 hours earlier.

It reports that the 18-year-old British tourist was attacked in the early hours on Sunday, July 2, at a nightclub in the popular destination.

She has told police she was at the club with two of her friends, when she suspects an unknown person injected her with a narcotic substance in her hand – without her realising that it had happened at the time.

From that moment, she says she suffered from complete memory loss, leading her to suspect that she was secretly injected with some form of drug.

As with the first case, a coroner’s examination has been ordered and police have launched an investigation into the alleged attack.

In yet another grim case, a 21-year-old British tourist was allegedly raped after she was dragged into bushes on a popular Algarve holiday beach last month.

The woman told police the sex attack took place on the sand by a walkway at Praia da Rocha beach in the municipality of Portimao.

And last month, two Irishmen were arrested on suspicion of raping a British tourist in a hotel in Magaluf.

The Briton, who has not been named, told police she had been sexually assaulted by the two men in a hotel room in Calvia by Magaluf in the early hours of July 19.

The Irishmen had reportedly fled the hotel before they were arrested by police officers at the airport as they tried to return to Dublin.

Police had arrived at the hotel on July 19 where the woman claimed she had been raped by the two tourists.

The alleged victim was taken by officers to Son Espases Hospital by the policeman where she underwent an examination of her injuries. The Guardia Civil confirmed that the woman had been raped.

It came days after a British tourist was arrested at the Palma Mallorca airport after allegedly raping his girlfriend at their hotel on the Spanish island.

The 38-year-old was held as he tried to fly home after his 24-year-old partner went to police to say he had forced himself on her in the bathroom of their hotel room.

The couple are said to have been staying at a three-star hotel near the resort of Magaluf when the incident allegedly occurred.

Meanwhile in May, a British tourist was arrested on suspicion of raping a female friend of his son’s at a hotel in Magaluf.

The holidaymaker was also held at Palma Airport after allegedly packing his bags and trying to leave the island in a hurry hours later.

The woman, also believed to be British, told detectives she was raped after falling asleep in her friend’s room, which had an internal door leading into his dad’s room.

The older man is said to have surprised her in the middle of the night after entering the room while his son was out partying.

The alleged rape victim, who is understood to be aged around 20, fled the unnamed hotel and raised the alarm at a Civil Guard office near to the Punta Ballena party strip in Magaluf according to local reports.

British 19-year-old ‘is secretly filmed having sex by one of two Israeli teens she invited back to her hotel room’ on Greek island as cops hunt suspects

  • On Tuesday the woman brought back two men to her Rhodes hotel room

A 19-year-old British woman has claimed she was secretly filmed having sex by one of two Israeli teenagers she invited back to her hotel room in Rhodes.

Local police said the teenager was staying at a hotel in Theologos while on holiday with two of her friends, according to Greek media.

On Tuesday at around 2.45am she reportedly invited two 19-year-old men she had met two days earlier at a bar in the notorious party resort of Faliraki back to her room.

While engaging in consensual sex with one of the Israelis, the other covertly filmed her, she claimed.

Upon discovering the illegal recording, the woman confronted the teens who then escaped.

Police are hunting down the perpetrators and the investigation is ongoing.

It comes weeks after a 20-year-old British tourist was allegedly raped in the sea during a summer holiday on the same island after she visited a beach with a man she had met online.

The Briton, who has not been named, told police a 23-year-old Albanian man raped her after they went for a swim at Glystra beach on the east coast of the island.

The young woman claimed the man, who she had been speaking to online for two weeks before meeting in person, then took her back to her hotel room in Kiotari where he attacked her and tried to rape her a second time, reported the Vradini newspaper.

The Albanian man, who has not been named, has since been arrested by police on the Greek island on suspicion of rape and attempted rape. He denies the charges.

In a separate case days later on the island of Crete, two British teenagers were arrested after a British woman told police they raped her and filmed the act after a drunken night out.

The 24-year-old unidentified Briton claimed the two 19-year-olds took advantage of her inebriated state in her hotel room in Rethymno.

She alleged the pair, who are also British, filmed the sexual assault, according to Greek press.

It is not clear whether the trio knew each other before the night leading up to the alleged rape.

Greek police yesterday arrested the two unidentified teens on suspicion of rape, while the 24-year-old was taken to a medical examiner to undergo tests.

Horror as Spanish cops find dissolved remains of woman, 22, inside wooden crate hidden between two walls ‘after her ex-boyfriend confessed to killing her’… nine years after she vanished

  • Sibora Gagani went missing in 2014 shortly after breaking up with her partner
  • Spanish police had abandoned the search until the boyfriend’s arrest last month
  • Investigators found remains stuck behind a wall at the pair’s old flat

Spanish police have found the remains of a young woman who had been missing for nine years behind a wall at her old flat.

Sibora Gagani, 22, went missing nine years ago shortly after breaking up with her boyfriend, but Torremolinos police gave up their search for her after finding nothing.

However, the former partner was detained last month for the murder of a more recent love-interest, known only as Paula.

On arrival at Torremolinos police station he saw the Italian-Albanian woman’s picture on a noticeboard, and reportedly confessed to her murder, including saying that he had dissolved her remains in acid.

Shortly after, the police reopened the investigation into Italian-Albanian Sibora.

Marco Gaio Romeo, Sibora’s boyfriend shortly before her disappearance, was detained on May 17 in relation to the murder of Paula, a 28-year-old from Italy, after being seen entering and leaving her home.

Paula was allegedly stabbed 14 times by Romeo; father to one of her three children.

Despite not admitting to Paula’s murder, the 45-year-old reportedly spontaneously confessed to the earlier crime after just seeing Sibora’s picture still on the wall after she went missing on July 7 2014.

According to a central government official’s statement, he claimed to have dissolved Sibora’s remains in acid before walling them up in a box.

Members of the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit of the National Police inspected the attic apartment where the couple lived together before the disappearance.

The flat, which had already been searched in the original investigation, was located in the neighborhood of El Calvario in Torremolinos.

After noticing that the lines through floor tiles either side of what was believed to be just one wall were inconsistent, officers used an X-ray system to detect a wooden crate hidden between two walls.

Inside the box the body was distributed between bin bags, with police also finding  a bouquet of flowers.

German cops investigating Madeleine McCann‘s disappearance are set to give an update on samples taken from an Algarve reservoir as soon as tomorrow, according to a report.

Detectives from the Federal Criminal Police (BKA), Germany‘s equivalent of the FBI, spent days searching land beside the Arade Dam last week.

They used search teams, sniffer dogs and radar to scour the location, just 31 miles from where three-year-old Maddie disappeared in 2007.

Prime suspect Christian Brueckner, 45, once called it his ‘little paradise’.

After the dig police left behind two-foot deep bore holes and the soil they took from them is being forensically analysed in Germany.

Authorities gather at a makeshift base camp in the Arade dam area during the search operation amid the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance on May 23

Authorities gather at a makeshift base camp in the Arade dam area during the search operation amid the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance on May 23

It was thought that this analysis, which could result into vital clues about Maddie’s disappearance, could take months.

But the results could be revealed as soon as tomorrow, the Mirror reports.

It still remains unclear exactly why investigators decided to search the land near the dam so closely.

Police teams were seen methodically taking down trees and hacking at the undergrowth to expose an area just a short distance from the water.

Photographs appear to show the remains of a camp at the mysterious spot with broken furniture, a torn ship’s buoy and even what looked like a makeshift toilet made from a chair.

Portuguese sources point to an informant handing police a specific tip-off that Brueckner visited the site just days after Maddie disappeared from her room in Praia da Luz.

This tip-off is believed to have been matched with geolocation clues found in Brueckner’s collection of 8,000 videos and images.

Together it is thought that these clues combined triggered the search at the remote site.

It was claimed they were looking for a camcorder and a gun tossed into the water but Portuguese police sources were quick to dismiss this.

.

.

Madeleine (left) was aged three in May 2007 when she vanished from her bedroom in the apartment her family were staying at in the Praia da Luz resort on the Algarve coast. German prosecutors believe Christian Brueckner (right) is behind her disappearance

German criminal profiler Axel Petermann says the cops were right to dig at a place Brueckner is so fond of.

He told The Mirror: ‘The criminal perpetrators who I got to know over the years tend to hide their victims in places where they feel safe and can assess danger.

‘These are places which are secluded and secret and where they can stop and assess various risks.

‘They can also be places where they feel good, and where there is a certain private memory of a certain act.

‘So, I think the search activity may have been going in this direction.’

He added: ‘My recommendation when dealing with suspects in the case of missing people is always to find the places where these suspects spent time, where they had secrets, where they could assess risks, so from this point of view I think the investigators’ current search was very important.

‘You must always delve into the life of the suspect so you can find out about their preferences, their tendencies, their favourite locations where they liked to spend time.

‘And I don’t think you can really find any better possibilities than to look in secret, confidential locations.’

Bruecker is now behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve region from where McCann went missing. He has always said he has nothing to do with Maddie’s disappearance.

He is currently due for release in 2026 and argues that police and prosecutors are ‘attempting to create a monster’ to ‘divert and let people think that I am the right one’.

However, chief public prosecutor Hans-Christian Wolters, who is pursuing the case against Brueckner, has said in the past they have ‘concrete evidence’ that Maddie is dead and believe Brueckner killed her.

Wolters confirmed that they will be making an announcement about the results of the dig soon.

Yet he suggested that his investigation team may not have discovered any crucial evidence just yet.

Speaking to The Mirror, Wolters said: ‘We will issue a short press release. But please don’t expect too much, especially nothing spectacular.’

Investigators leading the search for Madeleine McCann reportedly believe there are two other areas in Portugal they can scour for clues.

When investigators last week searched the remote Barragem do Arade reservoir in the Algarve, police said they found a ‘relevant clue’ during their search of the beauty spot after an informant was able to match photographs showing Brueckner close to the reservoir.

It is now understood there could be other areas surrounding Praia da Luz, where Madeleine had been staying with her family, that police can search after German detectives scoured through more than 8,000 photographs belonging to Brueckner.

A source told the Sun: ‘German officers have gone through more than 8,000 pictures belonging to Christian B. That forensic work led to them to Barragem – but there are other places that have come up in the pictures too.

‘Detectives are seeking to work out where they are and why Christian B was taking pictures of those places.’

A ‘relevant clue’ was found during the last day of the search, leading police to focus on a specific area of the secluded beauty spot.

Several items were removed from the site, which may or may not be of relevance to the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. They include a bra strap, pieces of clothing and plastic items.

The source said German cops believe that the original investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance by Portuguese cops was flawed.

They said: ‘German detectives remain hugely skeptical about the way the investigation has been carried out in Portugal which is why they are keen to carry on searching and looking at areas – even those where Portuguese cops claim to have examined.

‘They believe fresh work could unlock new clues which move the case forward.’

For more than a decade, Madeleine’s anguished parents Gerry and Kate (pictured together in 2017) have waited in vain for any news – any clue – that their little girl is somehow alive after all this time

Last week’s probe was first major search for the toddler in nine years and comes after German police discovered photos of Brueckner at his self-described ‘little paradise’ in the Portuguese region, it is understood.

Brueckner would camp by the reservoir at weekends and is understood to have set up a sinister base there to ‘cleanse himself’, it emerged last week.

A former friend of Brueckner, who has lived on Algarve for nearly 30 years and has been helping police with their investigation, claims the criminal would visit the reservoir ‘often’ but was ‘always secretive about it’.

The German mother-of-three, whose identity has not been publicised, recalled how Brueckner would drive his camper-van to the edge of the lake because he ‘liked to be near the water’.

She claimed he always camped in the same location and ‘there was usually no one else around’.

‘This was his exact special spot that he said he liked to come to cleanse himself,’ she said of his campsite, telling The Sun: ‘I don’t know what he did there as he was very secretive.’

Details of Brueckner’s secret lair came to light as a British couple told The Mail on Sunday how they spotted a bizarre ‘shrine’ to Madeleine in the reservoir just seven months after she vanished.

The retired couple, who have asked to be named only as Ralf and Ann, were so disturbed by what they saw they took pictures and sent them to Portuguese detectives, thinking they were of significance but, amazingly, never heard back.

Consisting of boulders in the shape of an arrow pointing towards a picnic site which was dug over by police last week, the makeshift memorial was weighed down by a large rock and had a bouquet of flowers and a photograph of abducted Madeleine on it.

Three years ago – when prime suspect Brueckner, 45, was identified by German police – the couple contacted detectives after seeing an appeal for anyone who was on holiday in the Algarve when Madeleine went missing in May 2007 to get in touch.

This time, the German officers from the BKA (criminal investigation unit) responded within hours of Ralf and Ann emailing them and quizzed them on the telephone for several hours before asking them to give a formal statement.

It raises the question whether it was their information that prompted the German authorities to request a search of the remote picnic area campsite on the edge of the reservoir near Silves, which Brueckner used to call his ‘little paradise’.

German prosecutors last year named convicted child abuser and drug dealer Brueckner as the prime suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance.

She was three in May 2007 when she vanished from her bedroom in the apartment her family were staying at in the Praia da Luz resort on the Algarve coast. The reservoir is about 31 miles inland from the resort.

Sources close to Brueckner’s legal team said any new searches will be a ‘waste of time’.

The source told the Sun: ‘He didn’t kill Madeleine and all of this is taking attention away from the job of finding out who really did.’

Brueckner was known to break into Algarve hotel rooms and apartments to supplement his income from drug dealing, and left the south of Portugal suddenly in 2007 – the year Madeleine vanished – after more than a decade living there.

He is alleged to have admitted abducting Madeleine to a friend in a bar – and German investigators are said to firmly believe he killed the three-year-old.

But more than three years after linking Brueckner to Madeleine’s disappearance, he has still not been charged regarding her abduction as prosecutors do not have enough evidence.

Investigators hunting for signs of Madeleine McCann cut down tree branches and brought in sniffer dogs today as they searched a secluded woodland spot next to a remote Algarve reservoir said to be linked to chief suspect Christian Brueckner.

The search for evidence connecting the toddler’s 2007 disappearance the German convict entered its second day today, as it was claimed the operation is taking place following a tip from a ‘very credible’ German police informer.

Photos and footage of the search operation today showed a group of Portugal’s National Republican Guard (GNR) being led by sniffer dogs to a small copse of trees close to the water’s edge. Officers were seen clearing branches shortly after.

This comes amid reports that officials are seeking any fragments of clothing and old rags that could be related to her disappearance – particularly the pink pyjamas she was wearing the night she vanished.

Meanwhile, respected Portuguese media outlet Expresso said the informant gave detectives ‘details’ they took ‘very seriously.’ The flagship weekly publication named Rainer Grimm as the man leading the probe for Germany’s central criminal investigation agency the BKA, saying he was among the officers at the site.

‘Expresso knows that these searches have their origin in a tip from a BKA informant who that police force considers very credible,’ it reported on its website. ‘This informant told investigators details that the German police took very seriously.’

It added: ‘The searches were requested by the German police after receiving this information.’ The media outlet said it had obtained its information from a ‘source close to the investigation.’

Emergency services with brush cutters to clear the search area arrived at the temporary camp set up on the shores of the Arade reservoir early on Wednesday.

Portuguese police, assisted by German and British counterparts, had focused their search on Tuesday on the reservoir’s shoreline.

This morning police appeared to be focusing on a valley slightly north of a secluded clearing behind trees near to where three tents were put up on Monday.

The dense vegetation meant they had to use tools including chainsaws to remove trees to access it properly.

Meanwhile, a fire service vehicle and rigid-hull inflatable boat were again on the banks of the reservoir, and appeared ready to launch on to the water.

Madeleine was aged three in May 2007 when she vanished from her bedroom in the apartment her family were staying at in the Praia da Luz resort on the Algarve coast. The reservoir is about 31 miles inland from the resort.

The first major search for the toddler in nine years comes after German police discovered photos of Brueckner at his self-described ‘little paradise’ in the Portuguese region, it is understood.

German prosecutors last year named convicted child abuser and drug dealer Brueckner as the prime suspect in McCann’s disappearance.

He is currently behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve region from where McCann went missing.

The case, unsolved for the past 16 years, remains a mystery as no body has ever been found. It sparked a media frenzy in Britain, with developments also followed by outlets around the world and celebrities joining appeals to help find Madeleine.

On Wednesday, the German prosecutor leading the country’s investigation into Brueckner’s suspected link to Madeleine’s disappearance said they do not have a confession from the convict.

Braunschweig prosecutor Christian Wolters said that while investigators have ‘indications’ that evidence could be found at the reservoir, this has not come from Brueckner himself.

‘We have indications that we could find evidence there. I don’t want to say what that is exactly, and I also don’t want to say where these indications come from,’ Wolters told German public broadcaster NDR today.

‘The only thing that I would clarify is that it doesn’t come from the suspect – so we don’t have a confession or anything similar now, or an indication from the suspect of where it would make sense to search, ‘ Wolters said, adding that ‘it was other indications that prompted us to conduct this search.’

However, Wolters appeared to calm expectations of what might be found, saying, ‘We never said that the girl disappeared where we are now searching.’

Tuesday saw about 20 officers with rakes and hoe-like tools spread out in a line, poking and raking the soil close to the Arade dam. Police also used a drone to scan the area from above and searched with sniffer dogs on both sides of the water.

Footage from the site showed officers taking bags away from the reservoir yesterday afternoon but it was not clear what was inside them. One video showed an officer being handed a bag by a colleague as they drove by in a black Ford SUV.

Last night a Portuguese source close to the investigation told The Sun: ‘The search is being taken very seriously and is being controlled totally by the Germans.

‘They asked Portuguese officers assisting them to look for any evidence – but especially rags.’

The Times reported that Madeleine’s pyjamas, which were pink and decorated with images of Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh, were a focus of the hunt.

A similar pair of pyjamas was held up by Kate and Gerry McCann during a press conference in June 2007, the month after their daughter vanished, in the hope of prompting witnesses who may have seen her that night to come forward.

Also last night the McCann’s former spokesman Clarence Mitchell told the Mirror the couple were being kept updated.

‘Until a body is found and proved to be Madeleine’s, Kate and Gerry are not giving up hope. They will be kept informed every step of the way of any development. It leaves Kate and Gerry on tenterhooks. It is another incredibly difficult time for them.’

Police are aiming to build up a picture of sole suspect Christian Brueckner’s life on the Algarve and the places he frequented as they search the Barragem reservoir in Silves, Portugal

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, excavations were carried out at two different spots around the water’s edge on Tuesday.

The reservoir is currently less than half full owing to a drought affecting Portugal and neighboring Spain. Much of the area being searched would be below water level in years of normal rainfall.

In the afternoon police appeared to be concentrating their efforts on a peninsula of land jutting into the reservoir.

Officers using sticks were beating back undergrowth as they inched their way through the woods before fanning down onto the beach to carry on the search.

However, just before 5.30pm, a violent thunderstorm and driving rain struck the search area and the operation was abandoned after it became clear the weather would not improve. The search was meant to continue until 9pm.

A no fly zone has been set up around the area extending for six miles.

This is due to expire at 10pm on Wednesday night fuelling suggestions the search will only be short.

The Portuguese police are expected to give an update on the operation once it has been completed later this week.

Two sides of the area have gently sloping banks towards the water, while the third is a sheer cliff, where three white police tents could be seen set back from the edge.

The reservoir is popular with tourists, particularly campervan users, and has BBQ stands and sun loungers scattered around.

Brueckner is known to have driven there frequently in his VW campervan, and is understood to have described it as his ‘little paradise’.

Sources close to the investigation have said they had evidence the clearing in the trees – where the white tents have been set up – was the spot Brueckner used to spend time at after parking up his campervan nearby.

A local who asked not to be named, but knows the area well, said: ‘It’s pretty well-hidden by the trees and you don’t realise it’s there until you’re almost upon it.

‘People wild camp there overnight from time to time which is why you’ll find the remains of fires inside small walls of stone.

‘It’s got old sun loungers in it and makeshift benches that visitors use to rest on. It’s very out-of-the-way and very peaceful but at the same time it’s got a slightly eerie feel about it,’ they said.

Local Portuguese reports, partly confirmed by police sources, claimed the searches were requested and authorised after German police obtained videos and photos of Brueckner by the planned dig site.

They are thought to have been found buried in the paedophile’s ‘secret lair’ in a dilapidated factory site in the German village of Neuwegersleben 65 miles south-east of Hanover.

Police raided the site in February 2016 in search of the body of missing five-year-old Inga Gehricke, who vanished while on a family outing in Saxony-Anhalt in May 2015 and has been dubbed the ‘German Maddie.’

Reports at the time said German detectives had discovered more than 8,000 images and videos on USB sticks and hard drives filled with child abuse images.

They were said to have been buried under the body of Brueckner’s dead dog.

Officials have been tight-lipped about the search.

In a statement on Tuesday, German prosecutor Wolters said: ‘Criminal proceedings are currently taking place in Portugal as part of the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case. Wolters said German officers are investigating in Portugal ‘on the basis of certain tips.’

He said he was unable at this stage to give more detail on what prompted the search, and what officials were hoping to find, but said that such details would be released ‘if we… think the results are publishable’.

‘Yes, the measures in Portugal are connected with the Madeleine McCann proceedings, which means that we are investigating there in Portugal on the basis of certain tips (tip-offs),’ Wolters said on Tuesday.

‘There is a major search operation taking place that is being implemented by the Portuguese authorities. But there are also German officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office on site who are supporting the whole thing.’

He added: ‘I can’t disclose the background at the moment, i.e. why we are searching there and what we hope to find there. That shall remain our secret for the moment.’

‘If we find something and we think the results are publishable, then we will certainly inform you about it. But give us a little bit of time. The action itself will also take a bit of time. It will not be completed within two hours or so. And whether we then find something and what we find, of course, we have to see that first.’

The Metropolitan Police has said officers are present in Portugal so they can inform Madeleine’s family if there are any developments.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell said: ‘The Met continues to work with and support colleagues in Portugal and Germany, with their investigations into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

‘Met officers will be in Portugal and I am grateful to the Policia Judiciaria and Bundeskriminalamt for allowing us to be present whilst their work is ongoing, so that we can inform Madeleine’s family of any developments.’

The reservoir was searched by divers hired by a Portuguese lawyer in February and March 2008. Back then, the diving team leader described the ‘long process’ his team faced navigating the ‘black’ waters.

Marcos Aragao Correia organised the privately-funded operation after claiming he had been tipped off by underworld contacts that Madeleine had been murdered and her body thrown into the reservoir within 48 hours of her disappearance.

Two bags containing small bones were found during the second search after divers had earlier recovered several lengths of cord, some plastic tape and a single white cotton sock.

Portuguese police were alerted following the discovery but subsequently ruled out the possibility the bones were human because of their size.

Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann had previously dismissed Mr Correia as a self-publicist and said there was no evidence suggesting any link between their daughter and the reservoir.

The dam, near the town of Silves where a lorry driver says he saw a woman handing a child like Madeleine over to a man two days after she went missing from her Praia da Luz holiday apartment on May 3 2007, is not thought to have been searched since March 2008 as part of the ongoing investigation into her disappearance.

The search is the first major operation of its kind since June 2014 when British police were given permission to do digs in Praia da Luz that involved sniffer dogs trained in detecting bodies and ground-penetrating radar.

The Scotland Yard digs nearly nine years ago in Praia da Luz were linked to the leading UK police theory at the time Madeleine died during a break-in and burglars dumped her body nearby.

The searches failed to find any trace of the missing youngster.

In a smaller operation in July 2020 Portuguese police and firefighters searched three wells for Madeleine’s body but failed to find any trace of her.

The abandoned wells are a 15 minute drive from a cottage Brueckner rented on the outskirts of Praia de Luz, on a narrow road leading down to a beach where the paedophile used to park his VW camper van.

German prosecutor Wolters has consistently said he is convinced Madeleine is dead and caged paedophile Brueckner has been named as the sole suspect.

The deviant, currently serving time for the September 2005 rape of an American OPA in the resort where Madeleine vanished, has yet to face any formal accusation over the youngster’s disappearance.

Last April he was made an official suspect or arguido in Portugal over Madeleine’s disappearance, although his defence lawyer Friedrich Fulscher labelled it a ‘procedural trick’ linked to statute of limitations legislation at the time.

Last autumn Bruecker was charged in Germany with several sex crimes on the Algarve against women and children including the rape of an Irish holiday rep in 2004 and the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old girl on a beach near Praia da Luz in 2007.

Brueckner’s lawyer revealed in April those charges had been dropped against him in a bombshell development after successfully arguing prosecutors had no jurisdiction over him in Braunschweig where the Madeleine case was being brought.

Portuguese media outlets reported yesterday that excavations at the reservoir had begun, with video appearing to show police officers digging at the site

The case could end up with prosecutors in Saxony-Anhalt instead but an appeal lodged by the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office has yet to be decided.

Braunschweig prosecutor Mr Wolters has insisted they are still in control of the Madeleine McCann investigation and Brueckner, who denies any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, remains in custody.

The Arade Dam, the Barragem do Arade in Portuguese, is fed by the watercourse of the Arade River whose source lies to the southwest of the Serrra do Caldeirao mountain range and runs through the municipalities of Silves, Lagoa and Portimao before reaching the ocean.

Construction was completed in 1955 and it began operating the following year.
