THE MAGIC HOUR

by David Wolstencroft (Scholastic £7.99, 394pp)

Who wouldn’t want an extra hour in the day to finish homework or play games? Well, that’s exactly what Ailsa discovers when she accidentally moves through a portal into a parallel universe of 25-hour days.

But there’s a terrible price to be paid for the chosen ones who visit — a price Ailsa discovers just in time to launch a battle against the forces of evil to save her parents and the world.

This clever debut from a TV writer (Spooks, The Escape Artist) has a wonderful lead character in Ailsa, a cliffhanger ending (teeing up a sequel) and fizzes with funny footnotes.

FABLEHOUSE

by E. L. Norry (Bloomsbury £7.99, 368pp)

The cruel fate of wartime ‘Brown Babies’, born to white British mothers and Black American GIs, is the backdrop to this exciting adventure.

Fablehouse is the orphanage where these mixed-race children were sent, and where lonely Heather befriends three others abandoned by their families.

Exploring the grounds, they discover Palamedes, a black knight from King Arthur’s court, who has slipped through time.

He warns them of a terrible danger as humans are replaced by changelings, and there’s a race to rescue the future.

The author, herself mixed race, was brought up under the care system and the sense of family and belonging shines through.

THE MAGICIAN’S DAUGHTER

by Caryl Lewis (Macmillan £7.99, 290pp)

Abby’s magician mum is dead and her dad’s conjuring act is tired and failing, so much so he gives up his wand and gets a day job. But when she finds a mysterious old book in the shed, Abby discovers that she can cast certain spells and is determined to rebuild her father’s career.

She has just three chances to change their lives and the action builds to a spectacular climax.

This heartwarming, witty and touching story is all about hope and belief, underpinned by the power of love to heal grief. An absolute delight.

This thrilling adventure is based on true events and is witty, warm and occasionally heart-breaking

UNTIL THE ROAD ENDS

by Phil Earle (Andersen £7.99, 288pp)

This touching story, set in London during the Blitz, is narrated by Beau, a stray dog rescued and adored by young Peggy. When Peggy is evacuated to the South Coast and the government orders pets to be destroyed, Beau survives only by becoming a working bomb-dog. Then disaster strikes; Peggy’s parents are killed and Beau must find and comfort her, aided by the family’s sour-tongued cat and a military pigeon.

Based on several true events, this thrilling adventure is exciting, witty, warm and occasionally heart-breaking. Keep the tissues handy . . .

SPELLSTONE

by Ross Montgomery (Walker £7.99, 336pp)

There's no let up in this absorbing tale of ancient powers

There’s no let up in this absorbing tale of ancient powers

The tension in this absorbing tale of ancient powers keeps up to the very end.

Twelve-year-old Evie feels increasingly invisible to family and friends until Wainwright, a mysterious magician, reveals she has untested sorcerer’s powers and recruits her to a secret organisation, The Order Of The Stone.

Together with four other members she must find and protect the Spellstone, the only thing that can fight malevolent Vale, an increasingly forceful renegade who seeks to control the world.

But can she discover and harness her powers in time? Vividly atmospheric with delightful characters, this spellbinding story also teases us with the possibility of a sequel.

THE THAMES AND TIDE CLUB: THE SECRET CITY

by Katya Balen Illustrated by Rachael Dean

Aimed at slightly younger readers, Balen's new book is set on the banks of the River Thames

Aimed at slightly younger readers, Balen’s new book is set on the banks of the River Thames

(Bloomsbury £6.99, 160pp)

Carnegie-medal winner Balen launches a new series for slightly younger readers with this wildly imaginative romp set on the banks of the River Thames. Clem and her friends Ash and Zara are mudlarkers who find hidden treasures (and lots of old rubbish) washed up on the shore.

But when Clem discovers a tangly loop of metal, strange things happen: the river rises up, the buildings shake, cracks appear everywhere.

The mysterious museum owner, Oswald, gives the children seal capes to dive underwater where they discover a royal kingdom — and a very disgruntled Porpoise Princess who has lost her crown . . . Packed with piscine puns and lovely descriptions, this is a watery wonder.

THE BOWERBIRD

by Julia Donaldson Illustrated by Catherine Rayner (Macmillan £12.99, 32pp)

Donaldson and Rayner return with this witty, touching and stunningly illustrated rhyming tale of kindly bowerbird Bert in search of a mate.

He attracts the attention of Nanette, but his modest offering of a purple flower isn’t enough for her, and poor Bert spends his days collecting all sorts of treasures to satisfy his bride-to-be.

When she betrays him he’s bereft — until the arrival of ‘The sweetest bird he’d ever seen, She bowed her head and said, I’m Jean.’

MY DAD IS A TREE

by Jon Agee (Scallywag £12.99, 40pp)

Agee’s deadpan humour finds perfect expression in this absurd and funny story of a put-upon father whose young daughter, Madeleine, insists they stay outside in the garden ‘all day long’ pretending to be trees.

As various creatures take up residence on Dad’s ‘branches’, it starts to rain and, as night falls, Dad’s patience wears thin, but Madeleine’s cheerful optimism about their joint venture sustains the fantasy.

Agee conveys so much emotion through changing facial expression in the simple but bold illustrations, and the bond between father and daughter is truly heartwarming.

THE KING’S HATS

by Sheila May Bird Illustrated by Mark Beech (Welbeck £7.99, 32pp)

THE KING’S PANTS

by Nicholas Allen (Andersen £7.99, 32pp)

Two fun titles for next week’s coronation celebrations start at the head with The King’s Hats, where Charles is feeling the uncomfortable weight of his new crown that seemed to fit his mother perfectly. But his wise gardener shows him how a King can wear all sorts of hats and, if he’s brave, he’ll soon feel at ease with his crown.

And at the other end of the body we have a follow-up to the classic The Queen’s Knickers with this madcap story of how the future King manages to lose a sackful of his underwear when his pants are posted to his loyal subjects and have to be tracked down by sniffer dogs . . .
