When you become familiar with someone, you start to recognize their face pretty quickly – but if you see them upside down, studies show it’s harder to tell.

Known as the face inversion effect (FIE), scientists have long been trying to work out whether it’s an evolutionary or learned behavior.

‘Face processing has received a lot of research attention and it’s a relatively well-developed research area, but the brain is complicated and hard to study so we still have only a dim understanding of how face processing works,’ Brad Duchaine, a psychologist at Dartmouth College told DailyMail.com. 

Now, a study by Duchaine’s team provides a unique opportunity to study how we perceive faces.  They studied a Brazilian man named Claudio Vieira de Oliveira who has a congenital joint disorder that causes his head to be rotated 180 degrees.

Because of the position of his head, Vieira de Oliveira mostly sees peoples’ faces inversely. Researchers tested his recognition ability in 2015 and 2019.

The researchers showed Vieira de Oliveira upright and inverted faces, and wanted to study his detection and identity-matching abilities.

Upright faces were those with eyes above the mouth, and inverse faces were those with eyes below the mouth, the study noted.

Researchers determined that if Vieira de Oliveira identified upright faces better than inverted faces, it would mean recognition is based more on experience since this is how he usually perceives people.

Vieira de Oliveira performed similarly on upright and inverted faces, indicating that both evolution and experience impact our ability to perceive faces.

When shown upright faces, Vieira de Oliveira was accurate 61 percent of the time. When shown inverted faces, he was accurate 68 percent of the time.  

Vieira de Oliveira was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a condition that restricts motion in in multiple joints and muscle weakness, and his parents were told he wouldn’t survive past birth. 

However, Vieira de Oliveira currently works as a tax accountant, and has given motivational speeches and written an autobiography.

‘Prior to this study, nothing was known about how a person who has seen lots of faces mismatched to their own face perform with upright and inverted faces,’ Duchaine said. 

‘These results indicate that people with typical face perception are extremely good with upright faces both because of the experience they have had with them and because their visual systems have processes designed to process upright faces,’ he said.

They also showed Vieira de Oliveira ‘Thatcherized’ faces, or faces where certain features like the mouth and eyes are flipped on an upright face, or kept upright on an inverse face.

Looking at the ‘Thatcherized’ faces, Vieira de Oliveira performed better seeing upright faces with altered features. 

 Researchers said they don’t understand why Vieira de Oliveira recognized the Thatcherized faces well, but assume it has to do with a different visual mechanism apart from detecting faces and identities. 

‘Nearly everyone has far more experience with upright faces and ancestors whose reproduction was influenced by their ability to process upright faces, so it’s not easy to pull apart the influence of experience and evolved mechanisms tailored for upright faces in typical participants,’ Duchaine said in a press release.

The researchers want to continue learning about the differences between how evolution and experience factor into how people perceive faces.

They also want to study the different judgements people make when they see faces, such as how they perceive attraction and trustworthiness.

Princess Andre led the celebrity offspring revealing their GCSE results as she went live on Instagram shortly after receiving her grades.

The daughter of Katie Price and Peter Andre, 16, told fans she had passed three of her seven exams, after failing to obtain higher than a four in the subjects.

Princess explained that you need to achieve at least a grade four in order to pass the exam, while the highest mark possible is a nine.

In the video, Princess was joined by her father Peter, 50, who told her he was so proud of her for ‘working her butt off’ ahead of the exams.

Princess, who is already signed to fashion brand PrettyLittleThing, said: ‘I didn’t pass all of them, but it’s fine, because I passed some of them! Apparently grade boundaries were really high this year.’

Peter said: ‘I’m proud of you, I think you worked your butt off. You know what, you worked really hard. saw you working hard, which to me is more important’

Princess revealed she received a 3 in business; a 3 in drama; a 5 in English; a 6 in fashion; a 4 in music; a 3 in geography and a 3 in maths.

Reflecting on her marks, she said: ‘I need to resit maths. I got 89 but I needed 98 out of 200 to pass maths. I think a four is a C.’

Peter reiterated: ‘I can’t speak for every parent, but seeing you work hard is all I need. Look what you got in English!’

Princess: ‘I was bottom set so the best mark you can get it a 5.’

Elsewhere, Jamie Oliver shared a supportive message to children with dyslexia on – saying it can be a ‘stressful day’ for those with learning difficulties.

The TV chef, 48, was among celebrities sending their well wishes on the Year 11 results day, while other nervous parents including Dan Walker revealed their child was one of the pupils awaiting their fate.

Jamie, was himself diagnosed with dyslexia in primary school, posted the positive message to his Instagram page on Thursday morning.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects accurate and fluent word reading and spelling, which affects individuals of all intelligence levels and can result in poor or inconsistent spelling and writing.

Jamie has previously been candid about his experience with the condition and explained that he has ‘come to terms’ with not learning the same way as others.

Understanding that it may be a difficult day for some, the empathetic star admitted a ‘lot of bright kids’ may be disappointed with the GCSE results they receive. 

Writing on Instagram, he said: ‘Today is GCSE results day, which I know can be a stressful time. A lot of bright kids with dyslexia will be frustrated by what they receive, because the education system doesn’t play to their strengths – but I’m always keen to say don’t let this define you.

‘The wider world is more open to you coming at life in a slightly different way. You don’t have to be conventional, you just have to have the confidence to do it. 

‘And remember, school is just one part of your journey. We’ve come a long way since I was at school, but it’s nowhere near enough. 

‘We need to embrace everyone’s inner genius, which definitely comes in different shapes and forms. Whatever your results today, I know you can and will achieve amazing things! #gcse.’

Alongside his kind words, Jamie posted a picture of himself posing against a promotional poster for his book, Billy and the Giant Adventure.

Elsewhere on social media, Channel 5 presenter Dan, 46, revealed his eldest child, Susanna, 16, was one of the teenagers expecting their GCSE results.

Dan, who said it was the first time he was experiencing the day as a parent, said: ‘All the best to everyone getting their GCSE results today… and big love to the parents involved (I am one of them for the first time).’

Sharing his own experience of GCSE results day, The Chases’ ‘Dark Destroyer’ Shaun Wallace posted an encouraging message on his Twitter page.

The successful quizzer revealed that he had flunked his own exams and insisted that results are about more than just coming top of the class. 

He said: ‘Results normally follow hard work It’s not always about coming top of the class, it’s about coming ‘top’ of your potential But when you work to your full potential, results often follow. Speaking from experience, I failed my exams! Have a great day.’

He also posted a clip, where he said: ‘Nothing works until you do!’ 

Coronation Street actress Cait Fitton, who plays Lauren Bolton, shared a message of support on behalf of the soap cast on their Twitter page. 

In April, Jamie said he recorded his first books on a Dictaphone instead of writing them down because of his struggles with dyslexia.

Last year, Jamie discussed his ‘frustrating’ struggle with dyslexia in a lengthy post as he explained he put his resentment towards school behind him.

Posting a carousel of lengthy text panels, Jamie detailed his battle, beginning: ‘Something i don’t really talk about much is the constant battle I have with words and reading…without question it is a love hate relationship.

‘In the old days at school it made me very frustrated and resentful about school as an institution and over the years i’ve come to terms with not learning the same way as most people not as a failure but an opportunity. 

‘An opportunity to look at things very differently, I’m older enough now to have a little wisdom on my shoulders only gained by the way mainly through failures and learning from them and evolving and staying authentic o the original dream and trying again and again and I realise my grammar here is s**t.

‘I’m also using autocorrect which can get me in a lot of trouble sometimes but that’s my point… if you understand what I’m saying I’ve done my job.’

Jamie continued to detail his struggle during school, admitting that getting info on paper was ‘almost impossible’ as he recalled ‘hating words and reading with a passion’.

The chef is known for his cookbooks, having released over 20 books of different styles of cooking and cuisines.

But admitting he has ‘never written a word’ of any of them, the TV personality wrote: ‘Here I am 46 years old, written 26 books apparently one of the most published authors on the planet ? No I’m not showing off I’m in as much shock as you are…but ive never ever physically written a word! 

‘I used to write my books on a Dictaphone then when I was eventually able to afford to employ an editor I would then dictate to them and that’s how I work it’s more complicated than that because I’m easily distracted and my working day has to be structured in a way that I’m kept invigorated and not allowed to get bored = fall asleep.’

‘But that’s within our gift to try and manage our time best for us to thrive and find what ever balance we are looking for right ?! when I show people around my office they often say what do all these people do? and I say they are really good at things I’m really bad at! and I’m bad at a lot of things…and this is all true.’

Jamie ended the long post by explaining his reasoning for opening up on the matter, explaining that ‘many of us are not brought up to embrace the currency of failure enough’.  

‘I believe that if our relationship around failure is managed properly, it is the key to a much happier, healthier future. If you personally struggle with anything, maybe look at it differently and take a different approach. 

‘Everyone struggles, everyone has a story that can be used to propel them forward or pull them back and i believe it’s how you choose to look at it that defines which path you take …you just need to find a way around it, do your thing and problem solve and please dream.’

Jamie has now healed his previously resentful relationship with his school days, concluding: ‘I will sign off by saying I no longer am resentful about school – quite the opposite, I think that our teachers and our schools are our secret weapon!!

‘I think it’s more than time for an education revolution especially in times like this! We need to propagate and take real care of the seedlings ~ of the future and that will fruit all that we dream and crave for our diminishing economy.’

Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Cara Delevingne led the jaw-dropping parade of celebrity guests who flooded into Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley’s wedding over the weekend.

Jack, a music producer, and Margaret, an actress, are slated to tie the knot on Saturday at the picturesque seaside resort town of Beach Haven, New Jersey.

A dazzling array of famous faces lent their high-octane glamour to the proceedings, including Taylor and Lana, who both have a longstanding professional connection to the groom.

Enjoying a brief respite from her barnstorming world tour, Taylor, 33, cut a classically elegant figure in a baby blue lace frock with an intricately designed floral motif.

The ensemble featured a corset top that lent it a dash of showbiz flair and emphasized the pop star’s athletic frame, no doubt honed by a chockablock concert schedule.

Her outfit featured a tier of frills that twirled its way down the skirt, which fluttered slightly in the breeze a she headed out into the sunshine.

She wore her silky curtains of caramel blonde hair down, sporting a charming bit of fringe, and plumped for classic makeup including bright red lipstick.

Balancing on a towering pair of silver slingback heels, the We Are Never Getting Back Together singer kept her jewelry subtle, in the form of a simple necklace and unobtrusive earrings. 

Taylor arrived at her friends’ nuptials amid a thicket of security, including one member of her detail who was spotted wearing a bulletproof vest. 

As the festivities got going, Taylor was seen surrounded by somewhat glitzier company – Big Little Lies actress Zoe Kravitz and Magic Mike heartthrob Channing Tatum.

Channing and Taylor were glimpsed with drinks in hand as they spilled out into the sunshine, flanking Zoe, who like the bride hails from a showbiz family.

Rihanna is now counting down the days until she welcomes her second child with ASAP, and has often been spotted out and about sweetly showing off her bump in very fashionable ensembles.

Beyonce revealed her second pregnancy with an iconic lingerie shoot back in 2017, which caused a huge stir when she shared it to Instagram at the time.

She further surprised her fans when she confirmed she was expecting twins with her husband Jay-Z, after they welcomed their first child Blue Ivy in 2012.

In an extravagant announcement, Beyonce donned a veil and silk underwear against a backdrop of gorgeous flowers to announce her twin pregnancy.

Before Beyonce’s second iconic pregnancy reveal, the star had already shocked fans when announcing she was expecting her first child – Blue Ivy, now 11.

Back in 2011, Beyonce revealed her first pregnancy while she was on-stage, performing her hit single Love On Top at the 2011 Video Music Awards (VMA’s).

She took to the stage in a purple sequinned jacket, which she wore buttoned up over a white shirt and smart black trousers.

Demi Moore arguably had one of the most famous celebrity pregnancy photoshoots of all time with her iconic Vanity Fair cover.

At the time, Demi’s August 1991 cover shoot, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, shocked the world and was even censored at some newstands, but it has since become one of the most iconic celebrity magazine covers of all time.

She posed on the cover naked cradling her blossoming baby bump while she was seven months pregnant with daughter Scout – her second child with Bruce Willis.

Demi kickstarted the trend for pregnancy photoshoots, inspired other stars to pose nude while pregnant over the years, including the likes of Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Cindy Crawford.

The actress has since spoken about the iconic shoot, admitting it was originally just intended to be a personal shot for her family, rather than a magazine cover.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2019, Demi shared: ‘It was one they did for me and the family and I said wouldn’t it be amazing if they had the courage to put me on the cover.’

Jennifer Lopez confirmed she was pregnant on stage during her concert stop in Miami of her El Cantante Tour back in 2007.

The singer, 53, announced she was expecting her first child with her then-husband Marc Anthony on the very final night of her tour.

As Marc joined her on stage, she told how she hadn’t wanted their exciting news to ‘take away’ from the tour as she excitedly told her fans about her baby news.

Katy Perry kept her baby news quiet for some time before confirming she was expecting her first child with Orlando Bloom in a music video.

The singer, 38, sneakily debuted her baby bump right at the end of her music video for her track Never Worn White, which was released in March 2020.

Waiting right until the end of the video to confirm the news, Katy cradled her baby bump in a glamorous white gown in a sweet moment.

After the video was released, Katy took to Twitter to address her pregnancy announcement, admitting she was pleased not to have to keep it a secret anymore.

She penned: ‘Omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore, or carry around a big purse lol.’

Cardi B announced that she was expecting a baby with partner Offset during her Saturday Night Live performance back in 2018. 

The singer debuted her song Be Careful in a ruched white gown that hugged her new bump on stage. 

After keeping the pregnancy a secret for so long, she said as she walked offstage: ‘I’m finally free.’

Cardi B welcomed her daughter Kulture, four, in July 2018, and she later confirmed her second pregnancy on stage in 2021.

At the BET Awards, her husband Offset’s rap trio Migos took to the stage to perform two of their hits, and were joined by Cardi B to perform Type Sh*t.

MICHAEL BUBLE’S SWEET CAMEO

Michael Buble sweetly revealed his wife Luisana Lopilato was expecting their fourth child in his music video for I’ll Never Not Love You.

Confirming the news in February 2022, actress Luisana made a cameo in Michael’s music video along with their three children.

In the closing scenes of the video, she revealed a growing baby bump as she visited a supermarket with her husband.

In short teaser clips of the music video, Michael had left fans in suspense as he played on the ‘how it started’ vs. ‘how it’s going’ troupe, before the big reveal. 

The music video is a love story dedicated to the first time they met on set of the production for Haven’t Met You Yet.

Not every performer began their career as a child star — but thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) we can now all catch a glimpse of what their childhood fame might have looked like.

DailyMail.com has obtained photorealistic AI-generated images from Midjourney for seven of the world’s most recognizable celebrities.

It comes after an image of an infant Elon Musk — showing the billionaire as a toddler wearing brown overalls — gave the internet baby fever.

The adorable (or possibly disturbing?) photo is not from the billionaire’s own family archives, however. Like these celebrities, it too was made with the help of artificial intelligence.

Midjourney, created by scientists in Silicon Valley, was made available last summer allowing a host of people to get the AI to generate an image for any of their prompts.

AI-generated images have since taken over the internet in recent months, some sparking joy and others causing terror.

In March, a photo of Pope Francis donning a huge white puffer jacket immediately fooled the internet.

The image was outrageous enough to prompt Chrissy Teigen, 37, to address her 12.9million Twitter followers.

The model and TV personality wrote: ‘I thought the pope’s puffer jacket was real and didn’t give it a second thought. No way am I surviving the future of technology.’

And in the same month, a gallery of snaps showing shocking scenes of Donald Trump being tackled to the ground by police officers emerged.

This was around the same time that the former president was due to be indicted over allegations he paid hush money to a porn star. However, the public knew something was off with the images.

Other AI-generated images, like one claiming an explosion occurred at the Pentagon last month, sparked concern over the tech.

The internet was, however, a big fan of the baby Elon Musk image. 

Twitter user Samantha Sherwin commented: ‘Aw, this is so cute. Is little Elon open [to] getting adopted?’

While another user posted: ‘Lol the real boss baby mystery.’

Last month, two-time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks made waves on a comedy podcast when said that he could easily live forever on the big screen with the help of artificial intelligence.

‘What is a bonafide possibility right now is — if I wanted to — I could get together and pitch a series of seven movies that would star me in them in which I would be 32 years old from now until kingdom come,’ said Hanks, 66, speaking with British comedian Adam Buxton.

If these Midjourney images are any indication, the same could be said for many of today’s best-known and most bankable performers.
