Shocking footage shows the moment a man hurled racial slurs and threats of murder and rape at his terrified black neighbors at their Oregon apartment complex.

Shirtless Dominic Austin, 19, is seen pounding on the door as he makes the sinister threats, pacing menacingly in front of the mother and daughters’ doorstep.

He even stabs their front door with a knife and in one clip he can be heard saying: ‘I’ll f**king rape your daughter, b**ch.’

‘You’re about to get murdered,’ he says in another, before ominously adding: ‘Call the cops, b**ch.’ He is also heard mumbling angrily about slavery, before asserting that he wants the women to be whipped.

The tenants on the other side, Nubrittany Smith and her elderly, live-in mother Tasha, say they have been subject to such behavior since June and have filed a restraining order against Austin.

However, Austin was only handed an eviction notice this week, before being arrested Wednesday for menacing the women and violating Smith’s August 23 protective order.

In his arrest report, officers with the Gresham Police report wrote how Austin violated the stalking order at least 10 separate times – repeatedly showing up the mother and daughter’s door to harass them while appearing increasingly unstable.

Smith said she reported the threats to police after ‘each event’ – with videos captured on her Ring Security Camera appearing to show Austin’s escalating behavior, which she said took a turn for the worse on September 8.

According to documents obtained by KOIN, that was when Austin was officially notified by management at The Landings at Morrison that he was being thrown out of the complex due to a stipulation in his rental agreement says tenants will be evicted within 24 hours if they should ever threaten another tenant.

The outlet, however, reported that an eviction notice was only handed to Austin on Monday, allowing him roughly two weeks to ramp up his campaign of harassments against the two women, who moved in in June.

The threats began soon after, with the family filing their first formal complaint against Austin on June 30.

Still, no action was taken until this month – and an arrest was not made until Wednesday, hours after KOIN unmasked Austin’s alleged behavior.

Footage posted to social media by Smith further substantiated her and her mothers’ claims – showing Austin issuing death threats to the pair through their locked door.

However, Austin - reportedly the subject of another temporary protective order filed by another neighbor in August - was only handed an eviction notice this week, before being arrested Wednesday for menacing the women and violating Smith's August protective order

He remains shirtless in all of the videos, which were all shared to Instagram by Smith.

In a GoFundMe asking for money to relocate, she alleged that Austin – who at this point was a day from being evicted – was suffering from a mental affliction, and had been coming down to the unit in such a manner since June 29.

‘Every time he comes down he is either holding a knife or beating on [our] door,’ she wrote on September 17, adding ‘the property management is aware of the situation and appears not to be concerned in our health or safety.’

She further revealed: ‘My mother has requested accommodations as far as being transferred to a different unit or paying for to place us in a hotel.

‘The property management declined both accommodations,’ she said.

Within a day after posting the profile – which has raised more than 10,000 in the span of a week – KOIN published its story about the alleged pattern of abuse, and brass at the posh complex near Portland formally hit Austin with an order to vacate.

That notice came nearly two weeks after management hit him with the 24-warning, which they inexplicably did not act on despite Austin’s visits – and the families complaints – persisting to this past Tuesday, when he was handed the order.

‘I was failed by the system and by the Landings at the Morrison,’ Smith told KOIN Wednesday after Austin’s arrest, adding ‘I don’t feel safe because he’s in jail today… I don’t know what tomorrow is going to be’

The next day, only after being named in the KOIN piece, Austin was placed under arrest  – on 10 charges of violating protection orders, and one count of menacing – a felony.

Upon his arrest, it was also revealed that Austin had a stalking protection order filed against him on August 23 by another tenant at the complex.

In that case, cops said Austin continued to violate that order, as well as Smiths’ until Tuesday – the day before his arrest.

Smith has since retained an attorney, alleging staffers at the Gresham apartment complex failed their tenants by allowing Austin’s pattern of abuse to continue unhindered.

‘I was failed by the system and by the Landings at the Morrison,’ Smith told KOIN Wednesday after Austin’s arrest, adding ‘I don’t feel safe because he’s in jail today… I don’t know what tomorrow is going to be.’

She told the station: ‘He could be released at any time. Then what happens next?’

Citing how she reported the behavior to police multiple times, Smith said: ‘As a Black woman, we, I felt that we weren’t heard – I feel that we were not important.’

Her lawyer, citing the landlords’ failure to act on their own policy of booting tenants within a day of making threats against a neighbor, said: ‘The people who run this very large apartment complex didn’t give a damn. The police did not give a damn.’

Claiming that both cops and the complex failed Smith and her mom, he added: ‘I don’t know how anyone can look at those videos and come to any other conclusion.’

Gresham police, meanwhile, sent out a statement in response Wednesday, finally addressing Smith’s complaints.

‘We are aware of the terrible conduct of the suspect in this case, including statements that indicate the motivation for the crime is hate or bias.

‘We share in our communities’ concern and appreciate the unique impact bias crimes, in particular, have on victims.

‘Although the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, the investigation is continuing.

‘We are working with the district attorney’s office to ensure the suspect is charged with the appropriate crimes.’

For many pet parents, their cats and dogs have grown to become like family – to the point they couldn’t imagine going a day without them.

From birthdays, weddings and even family holidays, the special memories would be incomplete without them.

And now animal news blog Wacko Jacko has compiled hilarious images from around the world of pets photobombing some pretty magical family moments.

It seems many of the animals wanted in on the action, and were prepared to go through any lengths to get it.

In one photo, a cheeky hound photobombs a romantic proposal, and even appears to mimic its owner’s pose as it goes down on bended knee.

Airport security officer ‘is caught stealing $300 from a passenger by swallowing the cash’

  • A screening officer in the Philippines has been caught allegedly stealing money
  • CCTV footage shows a female airport officer take $300 from a passenger’s bag
  • She then attempts to ‘swallow’ the dollar bills by placing them in her mouth

A screening officer of the Philippines’ Office of Transportation Security (OTS) was caught allegedly stealing $300 dollars from a passenger by ramming the bills into her mouth.

Authorities are now investigating the incident that took place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in the country.

The female security officer took the passenger’s bag for manual inspection while the passenger walked through an X-ray scanner, according to the Manila Bulletin.

CCTV footage from September 8 showed the officer turn away while placing something into her waist area.

A report by airport authorities said the officer operating the X-ray machine was seen passing the screening officer a bottle of water – this officer was then seen attempting to swallow the bills.

According to the report she was ‘clearly seen deliberately swallowing the dollar bills, folded into one small piece’, and even ignored a passing passenger who tried to ask her something’.

‘She was seen to be having a hard time swallowing the bills despite drinking the bottled water earlier given to her,’ the report added.

The screening officer’s supervisor then approached her, while she ‘was seemingly communicating with her as the latter was obviously almost choking in her effort to swallow the dollar bills while using her hanky to cover her mouth,’ the report said.

In a statement on Monday, the OTS said that the identity of the security officer has been established.

‘Upon receipt of the information about the recent allegations of theft involving a Security Screening Officer (SSO) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, where cash amounting to three hundred (300) US dollars went missing, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) took actions to validate the information and launch its fact-finding investigation.’

It emphasised that the incident does not reflect ‘the code of conduct for civil servants, much more of the core values’.

OTS Administrator Undersecretary Ma.O Aplasca encouraged informants to report illegal activities committed by OTS personnel.

Following the first reported theft at the security screening point, Mr Aplasca said  security measures were implemented, which included removing the jackets and searching pockets of security officers’ uniforms.

The staff members involved were immediately dismissed, prosecuted and reported to the public, Mr Aplasca said.

The footage has since been shared to Reddit, where hundreds of users have commented on the incident.

Some joked: ‘Omg money is filthy,’ and ‘She’s money hungry.’

Others questioned her technique: ‘I like how she stands directly in front of the security camera and then takes absolutely ages to finish the job.’

An Oxford-educated junior doctor has been banned from treating patients after he was caught moonlighting at a private cosmetic surgery clinic whilst pocketing paid sickness leave from his £35,000-a-year NHS job.

Dr Daniel Coventry, 33, was supposed to be off work at the taxpayer’s expense with a suspected virus, but instead he was offering facial fillers, thread facelifts, and anti-wrinkle injections at a privately run clinic in Brighton.

Coventry was reported to bosses at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex, after concerns were raised due to the amount of sick leave he was taking.

In 2019, a probe was launched and investigators found social media posts showing he had undertaken private aesthetic work at A New You and his own medical practice DC Aesthetics.

Coventry claimed he hadn’t had time to read the NHS policies on sick leave and said he thought there was ‘no conflict of interest’ in doing private work whilst off sick and ‘not rostered’ to work NHS shifts.

He subsequently left his FY2 job before officials were able to give him a final written warning and he was reported to the General Medical Council.

Coventry was suspended from medical practice for six months after he was found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service, in December 2019.

The moonlighting occurred over a six-month period between April and October 2018 just a year after Coventry joined the Western Sussex NHS Trust.

In the run-up to the ban he had been working full time in the private sector at the ‘A New You’ clinic in Brighton – where facelifts cost up to £8,000 and tummy tucks cost up to £6,000.

A consultant surgeon had explained the HR procedures to Coventry and he was advised to access the hospital’s ‘StaffNet’ website to read the Trust’s policies regarding sick leave.

In its determination, Tribunal chairman Samantha Gray said: ‘Dr Coventry chose not to read the policies despite being pointed in the right direction by the Trust.

‘The Tribunal also considered there was an element of deception as Dr Coventry did not tell the management of A New You, or any of his private clients, that he had been off sick from work.’

Ms Gray added: ‘The Tribunal took into consideration Mr Coventry’s submission that there had been no financial gain in this case. The Tribunal did not accept this.

‘Dr Coventry would have been paid for his sick leave from the public purse whilst also being paid for private work.

‘Furthermore, the NHS Trust may have had to fund further staffing to cover Dr Coventry’s absence. This further highlights that there is a way to go before Dr Coventry understands the consequences of his actions.’

Coventry was represented by his own father, Stuart, during the Manchester hearing.

Stuart Coventry said: ‘Dr Coventry was initially clear in his mind that he did not know he was not permitted to work whilst on paid sick leave and he presented evidence to make his point.

‘Instead of the week-long induction most FY2 students received at the Trust, Dr Coventry received an informal HR induction and it was implied that he should find things out for himself. This was not sufficient and Dr Coventry was therefore ignorant of policies. In addition, Dr Coventry’s initial educational supervisor was unable to fulfil her role due to sickness.

‘But he now understands he should have taken steps to know the Trust’s policies. He accepts it was his responsibility to read the policies as instructed and, had he done so, he could have asked any questions of an appropriate person regarding the meaning and application of the sickness policies. He accepts his previous behaviours were against policy and he apologised for this in full.’

Mr Coventry added: ‘At the time of the events, Dr Coventry had the mindset of a newly qualified FY2 doctor and was naïve and inexperienced. He also wishes to emphasise there was no intention of deceiving or defrauding his employer or causing them any loss.

‘He did not take sick leave specifically in order to undertake private work and he did not make any financial net gain. Had he been knowingly dishonest, he would not have posted about his work on social media. There was zero financial benefit to Dr Coventry.

‘Notwithstanding that, Dr Coventry accepts his actions had contravened Trust policy. He understands and accepts his naivety and errors of judgement, has apologised and learned the lessons from the events of 2018. There were no clinical concerns in this case, and there was never a risk of harm to the public or patients.’

Counsel for the GMC Chloe Fairley told the tribunal: ‘Whilst this is not a case in which patients were at unwarranted risk of harm, there are questions to be asked in relation to the reputation of the medical profession.

‘This was not a single isolated omission or error of judgement that could be quickly rectified, rather the misconduct involved repeated occasions of dishonest conduct over a period of six months, during which Dr Coventry had had a number of opportunities where he could have been honest. However, Dr Coventry has put his own personal and financial interests ahead of his duties to the Trust.’

Ms Fairley added: ‘At present, there is no real insight demonstrated by Dr Coventry and he is yet to take responsibility for his actions. Members of the public are entitled to place complete reliance upon a doctor’s honesty, and the relationship between the profession and the public is based on the expectation that doctors will act with integrity at all times.

‘Any insight that had appeared to be present at the Trust investigation in December 2019, when Dr Coventry stated that he accepted the investigation’s findings, has been undermined by his evidence during this hearing, when he stated that he had said those things merely for the sake of “moving things on”. This was a case involving deliberate deceit within a professional context.’

Coventry studied medicine at Oxford after graduating with a first class degree in Biology at the university of Brighton.

As news of a South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s secret affair with Corey Lewandowski came to light, questions have swirled about the state’s First Gentleman.

Bryon Noem, who says ‘marrying Kristi was the best decision he ever made,’ has stayed silent amid the explosive revelations.

Bryon has often loomed in the shadows as Noem ascended through politics – eventually taking the helm of South Dakota as their 33rd governor in 2018 when she promised to uphold the wholesome family values the state has ‘long embraced.’

According to the governor’s website, The 33rd First Gentleman grew up on a farm near Bryant where he says his love of small towns began.

Bryon is an American businessman, rancher and insurer but is best known for his role as Noem’s second half.

Married South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, 51, and ex-Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski (pictured in Ohio in 2020)  have been engaging in a years-long romance, despite both being married, DailyMail.com revealed

Graduating from Northern State University with a degree in business and finance Bryon worked on the family farm, coached basketball and eventually moved into the world of insurance.

He met Noem in high school when she had aspirations of becoming a farmer and rancher.

Together the pair operated a farm and ranch, opened an ice cream store helped manage a family restaurant, and pursued numerous other business ventures together.

While photographs of the couple show them beaming as they embrace and in front of the cameras, at least, showing a united front.

The pair had three children which they describe as their ‘greatest accomplishment’ –  Kassidy, Kennedy, and Booker.

As the glamorous Noem takes center stage, most recently endorsing Trump at a party fundraiser in Rapid City, Bryon continues to operate an insurance agency in Bryant and Watertown and coaches basketball.

His focus as First Gentleman of South Dakota has always been to keep small towns thriving given his personal history.

‘I am proud to be from rural South Dakota. It’s where I learned the values of hard work and self-reliance, where Kristi and I chose to raise our kids, where we started an insurance business and hunting lodge, and where my family has farmed and ranched for a century,’ he explained on his bio.

‘But many small towns like ours are struggling today. Class sizes are dropping. Businesses can’t afford to stay open. And fewer kids are coming home to farm or ranch.

‘While South Dakota has grown by more than 100,000 people since 2000, rural populations have decreased.

He added that seeing the larger communities flourish is ‘exciting’ but didn’t want to ‘lose South Dakota’s rural culture.’

‘I want to remind people that these are some of the best places to raise a family or start a business,’ he said.

‘I want to show that our way of life here is worth celebrating and promoting. I want to listen to peoples’ stories and learn from their experiences, then share them with others.’

News of the affair between Married Noem and Lewandowski, who is also married, broke on Friday.

The clandestine relationship could threaten to wreck Noem’s chances of joining Trump’s ticket in a potential rematch with President Joe Biden.

Neither denied the affair when asked by DailyMail.com. The Governor issued a statement questioning the timing of the article, while Lewandowski did not respond to a request for comment.

However, after the initial publication of the article, Noem’s spokesman Ian Fury vehemently insisted the pair had never had an affair.

The two met up on Friday last week when Lewandowski traveled with Trump to Rapid City, South Dakota, for a campaign rally.

But the pair – who were made aware of a pending story about their relationship – were careful to have no public interaction in contrast to previous occasions, as DailyMail.com’s exclusive photos show.

Glamorous Noem – who served four terms as her state’s only member of the US House of Representatives – won the governorship in 2018 promising to uphold the wholesome family values that she said South Dakotans have ‘long embraced’.

Defending ‘traditional marriage,’ which she defined as ‘a special, God-given union between one man and one woman’, was particularly important to her.

It was the foundation for her beliefs, policy priorities and the ideals she lives by, said Noem, who has a son and two daughters with her husband Bryon who she married in 1992.

She has long been linked with Lewandowski, 49, who has been pushing hard for Trump to add her to his ticket.

The far-right website American Greatness claimed in 2021 the two had been romantically involved, although it gave no details.

At the time she scornfully dismissed the story as ‘total garbage and a disgusting lie’, and said she loved her husband and was ‘proud of the God-fearing family’ they had raised, and the story quickly died.

But a DailyMail.com investigation has uncovered extensive evidence of the couple’s romantic relationship: Dozens of trips that mixed business with pleasure, flights on donors’ private planes, and stays at luxury resorts where their intimacy was observed and noted.

Lewandowski, who married 9/11 widow Alison Hardy in 2005 and has four children, did not respond to requests for comment.

He allegedly had an affair with campaign press secretary Hope Hicks, and in the run-up to the 2016 election he was arrested for manhandling Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields at a press conference in Florida. Charges were later dropped.

  • READ MORE:  Nevada boy dies from rare brain eating amoeba from Lake Mead

An Arkansas toddler has died after being infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba he was exposed to at a Little Rock country club.

The 16-month-old was playing at the country club’s splash pad when he was infected with Naegleria fowleri, a water-dwelling amoeba that causes inflammation in the brain and destroys tissue, killing nearly 100 percent of its victims.

The Arkansas Department of Health confirmed through lab testing that the water playground where the young boy and likely many other children were playing contained traces of the amoeba. The club promptly shut the pool and splashpad down.

The state coroner said the child, Michael Alexander Pollock III, died the evening of September 4 at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

He is believed to be one of five victims of the brain-eating infection this year, the most recent being a Texas resident who died after swimming in an Austin lake

Naegleria fowleri is a single-celled microorganism that lives in warm freshwater, the type that spurts out of water fountains on splash pads.

When the parasite gets into the nose and travels through the nasal passages, it reaches the brain where it feeds on brain tissue, leading to severe neurological damage. The infection is called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

It is not clear how much time elapsed between Michael’s exposure to the brain-wasting organism and his death, though the infection typically progresses quickly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms come on between one and 12 days after swimming in contaminated water, and death typically follows about five days later.

Symptoms resemble a virus at first, including headache, nausea, fever, and stiff neck. But they quickly progress to more severe neurological issues including seizures, hallucinations, coma, and often death.

Just 157 cases of PAM were confirmed from 1962 to 2022, but only four people survived.

The Arkansas Department of Health, which sent water samples to the CDC for testing, said: ‘The CDC has reported one splash pad sample as confirmed to have viable Naegleria fowleri. The remaining samples are still pending. The department has been in contact with the Country Club of Little Rock, and they have been cooperative in inquiries with the ADH.’

While generally very rare, there are believed to have been at least five other casualties in the US this year. Last month, a man in Texas died of the infection after taking a swim in in Lake Lyndon B. Johnson near Austin.

That incident came about a month after a similar death in Georgia. Just a few weeks before the Georgia case, a two-year-old in Nevada succumbed to the infection from the amoeba.

Another death due to the infection was reported in Charlotte County, Florida, around 70 miles south of Tampa, back in March.

The last case reported in Arkansas was in 2013 when a 12-year-old girl named Kali Hardig who contracted the infection from a water park, and survived.

What is Naegleria fowleri?

Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba that ‘literally eats the brain tissue,’ according to Dr Anjan Debnath, a parasitic disease expert at the University of California, San Diego.

It thrives in warm climates in freshwater including hot springs and lakes.

Improper water treatment in pools, private ponds and even tap water can lead to deadly exposure to the amoeba as well.

The amoeba travels up the nose where it has a direct route to the brain.

Once a person’s olfactory nerve in the nose is exposed, symptoms typically come on within one to nine days.

Those who are infected will usually die within five days of symptoms first appearing.

Early stage symptoms resemble those of the flu.

Symptoms as the infection worsens include severe neurological issues like seizures, hallucinations, confusion, and coma.

Two easyJet passengers who had sex in a plane toilet on a flight to Ibiza emerged to applause and cheers of ‘top girl’ as they wandered shamelessly back to their seats.

An earlier clip recorded passengers whooping and screaming with delight when a cabin crew member opened the door to expose the duo having sex.

The footage taken on the flight from Luton appears to show the pair were in no mood to stop early, with the man promptly shutting the door again so they could join the so-called ‘Mile High Club’.

A second clip sees the pair waving their arms defiantly with no hint of blushing as they walk down the aisle of the plane to their seats, while thrilled passengers cheered them on.

The plane was met by police when it landed in Ibiza and the duo were led away.

An EasyJet spokesperson told MailOnline the flight was met by police on arrival on the Spanish party island.

Those in the rear seats who watched the situation unfold appeared to find what was happening hilarious and could be seen watching opened mouthed. One woman was heard screaming ‘Oh my f***ing God’, before asking her friend if she had videoed what happened.

But the cabin crew member seemed unsure how to respond and could be seen in the clip holding his head in the hands after catching the couple in the act.

The video has been shared widely on social media, with one user joking: ‘Ryanair would charge extra.’ Another added: ‘Hope that wasn’t the pilot.’

An easyJet spokeswoman told MailOnline: ‘We can confirm that this flight from Luton to Ibiza on September 8 was met by police on arrival due to the behaviour of two passengers onboard.’

The identity of the couple is not known and it has also not been confirmed whether any arrests were made in Ibiza.

Bedfordshire Police, which is responsible for policing at Luton Airport, confirmed to MailOnline that it was not involved in the response.

Section 71 of the Sexual Offences Act 2004 states that it is illegal to have sex in a lavatory to which the public has access.

Seeing the Northern Lights is something that features on many people’s bucket lists.

And if you’re lucky, you could tick it off your list tonight.

A photographer couldn’t believe his luck when he snapped spectacular photos of the aurora from Cornwall last night.

Ross Jennings, a photographer from Camborne, posted the photos on his Facebook page, writing: ‘These Pillars really flared up for about 10 minutes… and I’m pretty sure it’s the strongest I’ve ever seen them.’

If you missed them, there’s good news, as the Met Office says there’s a chance the stunning display will be out again tonight.

Where to see Northern Lights tonight

If you missed last night’s display, the good news is that the Met Office says there’s a chance it will be visible for many Britons again tonight.

‘A minor enhancement to the auroral oval is likely in the coming days, most notably on 14-15 Sep,’ the Met Office explained.

‘Aurora may become visible to the naked eye along the northern horizon from Scotland (where skies are clear) and perhaps briefly Northern Ireland and Northern England.

‘Activity likely subsiding from 16 Sep.’

Mr Jennings was alerted to the Northern Lights ‘last minute’, and quickly headed out at around midnight to Hells Mouth Coastal Walk to try to snap them.

‘After catching an Aurora alert at the last minute, full of snot and freezing cold I headed out to the North Cliffs,’ he posted on his Facebook page.

‘And it didn’t disappoint…’

His stunning photos show the magical pink, yellow and blue lights in the night sky, while the waves lapped the shore below him.

Several viewers expressed their delight at the images, with one calling the photos ‘absolutely gorgeous’, and another adding that his early start was ‘so worth it.’

While auroras are best seen at night, they’re actually caused by the Sun.

Solar storms on the sun’s surface give out huge clouds of electrically charged particles, with some travelling millions of miles to eventually collide with Earth.

While most particles are deflected away, some are captured in the Earth’s magnetic field, accelerating down towards the north and south poles into the atmosphere.

‘These particles then slam into atoms and molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere and essentially heat them up,’ said Tom Kerss, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory.

‘We call this physical process “excitation”, but it’s very much like heating a gas and making it glow.’

Here on Earth, what we are seeing are atoms and molecules in our atmosphere colliding with particles from the Sun.

The aurora’s characteristic wavy patterns and ‘curtains’ of light are caused by the lines of force in the Earth’s magnetic field.

WHAT ARE AURORAS AND WHAT TRIGGERS THE STUNNING NATURAL DISPLAYS?

The Northern and Southern Lights are natural light spectacles triggered in our atmosphere that are also known as the ‘Auroras’.

There are two types of Aurora – Aurora Borealis, which means ‘dawn of the north’, and Aurora Australis, ‘dawn of the south.’

The displays light up when electrically charged particles from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

Usually the particles, sometimes referred to as a solar storm, are deflected by Earth’s magnetic field.

But during stronger storms they enter the atmosphere and collide with gas particles, including hydrogen and helium.

These collisions emit light. Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are common.

Steve Smith narrowly escapes sensational run out from England’s substitute fielder… before being brilliantly caught by Jonny Bairstow

  • Steve Smith was given a narrow reprieve after it seemed he had been run out
  • Sub George Ealham and Jonny Bairstow combined to stump the former captain
  • But it was not given out, only for the England wicket keeper to dismiss him after

Steve Smith narrowly escaped a sensational run out from England’s substitute fielder, George Ealham, during the second day of the fifth Ashes test match at the Oval.

It was almost reminiscent of Ricky Ponting’s dismissal at Trent Bridge in the 2005 Ashes series and ironically, the former Australian captain was on Sky Sports’ commentary at the time the incident took place .

The decision, which has sparked much discussion online, saw Smith knock a ball from Chris Woakes down to mid-wicket.

On the television coverage, the ball seems to trickle away out wide, with the 34-year-old and his batting partner, Pat Cummins, attempting to make it back to the crease in time for two runs.

But appearing from out of the picture of the television coverage came Earlham, who steamed in to throw a rocket of a ball into Jonny Bairstow.

The England keeper took the catch and swung his hands into the wicket as Smith dived for his crease with the bat.

The decision went upstairs to the television match official, with Ponting initially saying ‘this could be out’ before asking the question everyone in the stands was thinking ‘had Smith made his crowd.’

It was a very hard decision for the TMO to call, with there being millimetres between Smith’s bat and the crease.

But it seemed that Bairstow had made contact with the stumps before he caught the ball and under Law 29, the wicket was not removed fairly and subsequently decision was ruled as ‘not out’.

Ponting, meanwhile, who had notably been dismissed by substitute fielder Gary Pratt in a similar incident was on hand to tell Smith that he should have learned from his mistakes.

‘The lesson is, don’t take on the sub fielder you know nothing about … the bloke’s covered 100 metres in 8.5 seconds,’ Ponting said on Sky Sports.

Woakes would be back to attack Bairstow again soon after, with the Australian swinging again with his bat towards mid-wicket, but he erroneously caught it wrong and sent the ball up into the air with a poor top edge flying backwards behind his own wicket.

Bairstow was on hand once again and this time made no mistake, running backwards to take an impressive catch on the run to dismiss Smith for 71 off 123 balls.

Within surfing and lifeguarding communities, the media has developed a bad reputation for overexaggerating the threat rip currents pose to beach goers – ironically putting them at even greater risk.

Although the overwhelming majority of deaths on American beaches are caused by ‘deadly’ rip currents, experts warn that in almost every case the fatality was not caused by the current itself, but rather the swimmer’s response.

DailyMail.com spoke with Wyatt Werneth – former Lifeguard Chief of Brevard County in Florida – about how to cope with rip currents and his advice was quite simple: ‘Just lay on your back and float, that’s all you’ve got to do.’

As a lifeguard shortage plagues America’s coastal states, swimmers descending on the nation’s beaches this summer are being encouraged to educate themselves on rip currents, among other ocean hazards.

Rips are strong, narrow currents that flow roughly from the shoreline through the surf and out to sea. Crucially, they never flow downwards and cannot pull swimmers underwater.

Wyatt Werneth served as the chief lifeguard for Brevard County in Florida from 1999 until 2008. He suggested staying calm and merely keeping afloat was key to surviving a rip current

Wereneth said the typical advice of swimming parallel to the shore to escape a current was not always effective because, where there is a rip current, there is often another beside it. Trying too hard to escape can cause exhaustion and result in drowning. Pictured is a series of rip currents above Pensacola Beach in Florida

There are more than 100 deaths per year in the US attributed to rip currents, according to the United States Lifesaving Association – almost all of which are avoidable. This year alone, rip currents have killed 39 people, according to the National Weather Service

Nearly half of those were in Florida.

Werneth served as the chief lifeguard from 1999 until 2008, during which time he trained hundreds to man Brevard County’s 72 kilometers of coast.

He is now based in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and serves as spokesperson for the National Lifeguard Association, and in the Aviation unit of the Brevard County Sheriff’s office, where he conducts ocean rescues from a helicopter.

In 2007 he paddleboarded 345 miles from Miami to Jacksonville to raise awareness of rip currents, a stunt for which he became a Guinness World Record holder.

‘Out of the 11 [fatalities] that have happened here this year in Brevard County, they were all rip current-related,’ said Werneth. ‘Over the years I’ve been lifeguarding, the majority of fatalities have been rip currents.’

‘All of this could be predicted and prevented,’ he said. In the most simple terms, his advice was: ‘Don’t panic.’

And while that may seem trivial and fairly obvious, it’s absolutely critical. If somebody in a rip current panics, they may well exhaust themselves and struggle to stay afloat.

‘What we ask people to do if they are in a rip current is not to panic, just kind of relax, wait for help, and try to maintain your buoyancy,’ said Werneth.

If those caught in currents can stay afloat they can simply ride out the current, which more often than not will actually loop around and lead them back to shallow water.

Werneth claimed to be at such ease with rip currents that he could ride in them – a common trick among experienced surfers who will use the assistance to take them out to sea.

‘I’m not going to drown in a rip current,’ he said.

‘In fact, we use rip currents. When I go surfing, the first thing I do is walk down to the beach and I look and see where the rip current is and I jump in it.

‘A trained individual, they’re not going to drown in a rip current in normal circumstances, there’s no reason,’ he added.

A rip current warning on a beach in Galveston, Texas, offers the traditional advice of swimming  parallel to the shore to escape the flow

Traditional advice that’s also long been circulated around rip currents is to ‘swim parallel’ to the shore as opposed to directly towards it.

While there may be some value in that advice, Werneth suggested it was not necessarily that helpful and if doing so is going to exhaust the swimmer, it would be best to focus on staying afloat.

‘There used to be [advice to] shoot parallel along shore to get out of a rip current but actually studying the beach and watching the beach that I’m responsible for, swimming parallel doesn’t work because you’d swim right into another one – they’re right side by side.’

Dyes and aerial cameras can be useful for revealing how rip currents actually work, and in many cases, particularly when caused by man-made phenomena, a series of rip currents can form side by side. They also come in various shapes.

‘They’re not just a lane or an area. It can be one alongside the other, and they don’t necessarily just go straight out, they loop around,’ said Werneth.

When asked if a rip current could take a swimmer so far out into the ocean that they wouldn’t be able to return, Werneth said that was not a likely scenario.

‘I can tell you nothing like that’s ever happened,’ he said. ‘If the person’s doing everything right, they’re just floating in the water, it’s just a day to day at the beach, They’re not going to drown because the rip current pulled them off.

‘I haven’t ever heard of a case where someone got pulled out and lost in a rip current because they went too far out. That’s not to say something like that may not happen, that hasn’t happened in my experiences,’ he added.

Werneth also offered DailyMail.com advice for bystanders or people on the coast considering how to rescue those struggling in the water.

Crucially, he said that if somebody else is caught in a rip current you should not enter the water to rescue them unless you have some type of float.

‘If you have to respond to someone never go into the water without a floatation, you become part of that problem, you won’t be a solution,’ he said.

Werneth said that during his eight-year tenure as lifeguard chief there were 26 fatalities – of those more than half involved ‘a double drowning or a rescuer drowning’.

And in his experience the person who goes out to make the rescue was more likely to die than the person requiring rescue.

‘I think the person is panicked, and uses the rescuer to sustain flotation, pushing them under water and basically beat the hell out of the rescuer,’ he said.
