Mohammed bin Salman has admitted ‘mistakes’ over the killing of US-based journalist and critic Jamal Khashoggi.

In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News, the 38-year-old controversial Crown Prince said he was reforming the kingdom’s security system to avoid such ‘mistakes’ in the future.

‘It was a mistake. It was painful,’ the crown prince said, while insisting that ‘everyone involved’ served jail time.

‘We try to reform the security system to be sure that these kind of mistakes doesn’t happen again, and we can see in the past five years nothing of those things happened. It’s not part of what Saudi Arabia do.

‘We take all the legal measurements that any country took… We did that in Saudi Arabia and the case being closed,’ MbS said.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who wrote for the Washington Post and was critical of the Saudi government was brutally murdered on October 2, 2018, inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in a case that sparked international outrage.

Biden vowed to make Saudi Arabia a ‘pariah’ over the killing while campaigning for president in 2020 after multiple international intelligence agencies pointed to MbS’ involvement in the murder.

But he has since bowed to that reality, patching up relations with the Crown Prince while seeking his help in controlling oil prices and managing other regional issues.

In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News , the controversial Crown Prince also admitted 'mistakes' over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and warned that his country will get nukes if Iran does

MbS was also questioned about the possibility of Iran eventually creating a nuclear weapon, and he confirmed that if Iran were to begin building an arsenal, Saudi Arabia would seek to do the same. (Pictured: an alleged Iranian military bunker)

The Biden administration released a declassified report by U.S. intelligence concluding that MbS ‘approved’ the operation that killed Khashoggi – but took no action against the crown prince himself.

MbS was also questioned about the possibility of Iran eventually creating a nuclear weapon, and he confirmed that if Iran were to begin building an arsenal, Saudi Arabia would seek to do the same.

‘We are concerned if any country getting a nuclear weapon: That’s a bad, that’s a bad move,’ he said. ‘They don’t need to get nuclear weapon because you cannot use it.’

When asked how he would respond to Iran securing a nuke, he said: ‘If they get one we have to get one’.

That has worried nuclear nonproliferation experts, who say the U.S. granting the kingdom the ability to enrich uranium itself could fuel a regional arms race.

During the interview with Baier, MbS also said he doesn’t see an issue with a Saudi Arabian wealth fund injecting $2billion into Jared Kushner’s private equity – despite his family links to former president Donald Trump.

Six months after Trump left the White House in 2020, his son-in-law and former senior adviser Kushner secured a $2 billion investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) led by MbS.

When asked whether this created a conflict of interest – and if the royal family would pull the money should Donald Trump win re-election – MbS said ‘if it’s legal, what’s the problem?’

‘We look for opportunities in investment,’ he said. ‘We have a lot of investment around the globe with a lot of people with economic opportunity.’

On whether the $2billion would remain with Kushner even if Trump becomes president again, MbS answered in the affirmative.

‘It’s a commitment that PIF have and when PIF have a commitment with any investor around the globe, we keep it,’ he said.

Pushed on whether he recognized that this could create a conflict of interest, he said: ‘Saudi Arabia is so big, so I’m quite sure mostly any person around the world directly or indirectly you have something to do with Saudi Arabia.

‘So if that can affect President Trump’s decision if he becomes a President, that means it can affect every president in the world and every person in the world’s decision.

‘Because directly and indirectly they have some sort of interest in something to do with Saudi Arabia.’

The other major topic on the agenda was Saudi Arabia’s efforts to improve bilateral relations with Israel.

Saudi Arabia is discussing a major agreement with the United States to normalize relations with Israel in exchange for a U.S. defense pact and aid in developing its own civilian nuclear program.

But the Saudis have said any deal would require major progress toward the creation of a Palestinian state, which is a hard sell for the most religious and nationalist government in Israel’s history.

‘For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part,’ MbS told Baer.

‘We got to see where we go,’ the prince said. ‘We hope that will reach a place, that it will ease the life of the Palestinians, get Israel as a player in the Middle East.’

He also denied reports that the talks had been suspended, saying ‘every day, we get closer.’

The interview aired shortly after President Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while both were in New York for the meeting of the U.N. General Assembly.

Biden raised concerns about the far-right Israeli government’s treatment of the Palestinians and urged Netanyahu to take steps to improve conditions in the West Bank at a time of heightened violence in the occupied territory.

Netanyahu’s office said the meeting ‘mostly dealt with ways to establish an historic peace agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which could greatly advance an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict and facilitate the establishment of an economic corridor to link Asia, the Middle East and Europe.’

Asked during the interview about working with someone as conservative as Netanyahu, Prince Mohammed said: ‘If we have a breakthrough, reaching a deal that gives the Palestinians their needs and (making) the region calm, we’ve got to work with whoever’s there.

White House claims Biden was just checking in on Hunter during calls

The White House said President Joe Biden was just calling to check in on Hunter when he was on calls with his son's business associates. 'This is part of the right-wing's misinformation machine to try to confuse people about what the truth is,' White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations Ian Sams told CNN on Wednesday morning. 'The truth is that the president, as he said publicly for years, calls his family every day to check in. He calls his son every day to check in. He calls his other family members to check in to see how they are doing. He loves them. They are a tight-knit family.'

Hunter's former business partner Devon Archer told the House Oversight Committee in testimony this summer that Hunter had put his father on speakerphone during business meetings about 20 times. Sams argued those calls were personal as the White House doubled down on its pushback to Speaker Kevin McCarthy opening an impeachment inquiry into the president. The administration also sent a letter to news organizations pushing the outlets 'to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies.' At the time of Archer's closed-door testimony, Democrats in the room said Archer described the calls as personal.

'The witness indicated that Hunter spoke to his father every day, and approximately 20 times over the course of 10-year relationship, Hunter may have put his father on the phone with any number of different people, and they never once spoke about any business dealings,' Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman of New York said at the time. 'As he described it, it was all casual conversation, niceties, the weather, what's going on. There wasn't a single conversation about any of the business dealings that Hunter had,' Goldman noted. But Republican Chairman James Comer of Kentucky said Archer testified that Joe Biden 'joined Hunter Biden's dinners with his foreign business associates in person or by speakerphone over 20 times' and was put on the phone to sell 'the brand.'

Comer said the testimony shows 'Joe Biden lied to the American people when he said he had no knowledge about his son's business dealings and was not involved. Joe Biden was 'the brand' that his son sold around the world to enrich the Biden family.' The White House has accused Republicans of election-year politics with its impeachment inquiry. 'The president has been in politics for a long time. I think as he would say, he has seen a lot of malarkey along the way, but this might take the cake,' Sams told CNN. 'He's focused on issues that matter to the American people.'

Sams is White House point person on countering Republican accusations against the president and his family. He is part of a war room established in the White House counsel's office specifically to deal with GOP investigations. He noted Biden, who was vice president at the time, was calling Hunter to check in because the family was also dealing with the illness of Beau Biden, the late son of the president. Beau Biden died in 2015 of brain cancer.

Hunter Biden did get sober but his business dealings are being investigated by House Republicans. And the impeachment inquiry - the first step in the impeachment process - will investigate whether President Biden personally benefited from his son's work. Biden has said he had nothing to do with Hunter's business deals. Speaker McCarthy, under heavy pressure from the conservative wing of his party and facing threats to his speakership, declared on Tuesday the inquiry would begin. 'House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden's conduct,' McCarthy said. 'Taken together these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.'

'These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption. And they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives . That's why today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,' he noted. Hunter had business deals with an energy company in the Ukraine, received a discounted stake in a private-equity firm in China , and did consulting for a Romanian real-estate magnate.

The president has denied any involvement in his son's business dealings. But Republicans claim at least a dozen Biden family members could be involved in a scheme to benefit financially from Biden's public office. House investigators are expected to issue subpoenas for the bank records of the president and his family. The GOP also claim Biden sat in on at least 24 calls with Hunter's business partners and was referred to as 'the big guy' by Hunter's business associates. Eddie Jones has dismissed claims made against him by Danny Cipriani – that he badgered him with inappropriate questions about his former girlfriend, TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher – as ‘absurd’ and ‘a fabrication’.

The former England head coach, now back in charge of his native Australia, has responded to allegations made in Cipriani’s autobiography, Who Am I? In it, the ex-England fly-half gave an account of a conversation over dinner in 2016, saying: ‘Eddie comes over and sits next to me.

‘The first words out of his mouth are, “Mate, doesn’t Kirsty Gallacher live around here? Haven’t you shagged her? What’s she like?”.

‘I’ve just split up with Kirsty, after a short relationship, and it’s not something I want to talk to my head coach about, or anyone else for that matter.

‘Eddie keeps pecking, like a horny teenager, and in the end I tell him straight, “Eddie, I don’t want to talk about this, it’s making me uncomfortable”.’

Jones is busy preparing his Wallabies squad for a World Cup opener against Georgia on Saturday, but when contacted by Mail Sport, he refuted Cipriani’s remarks, saying: ‘We didn’t have a close relationship, so I’m hardly going to engage in a conversation like that with him.

‘To be quite frank, it’s a complete fabrication. We didn’t select him. When players don’t get selected, they always have an axe to grind – we know that.

‘He’s selling a book, so nothing surprises me when players want to sell books. It’s absurd. It’s almost too absurd to talk about.

‘I think it’s very sad for him that he feels he has to make something up to sell his book.’

When pressed on whether he had ever spoken to Cipriani in any way about Kirsty Gallacher, Jones said: ‘I cannot remember that.’

And asked if he was upset by the allegations, he added: ‘It’s just f**king nonsense. If anyone is stupid enough to pay attention to it then good luck to them.’

Jones is notoriously tough on his players and uncompromising in his approach, but he categorically denied speaking to Cipriani about any sexual-related matters.

‘That’s hardly the sort of language I would use,’ he said.

‘It’s not how I speak to players. In all the years I’ve coached, there would be very few conversations like that with players.

‘It’s not to say I haven’t had a conversation like that, but there would have been very few – and certainly not with Cipriani.’

Over all his years of coaching, Jones has often been antagonistic and confrontational, but he denied ever being accused of inappropriate behaviour such as this before. ‘I can never recall it,’ he said.

‘And if there was anything, it would have been in the newspapers.

‘I’ve learned to keep an appropriate distance. You don’t coach for the amount of time that I’ve coached without keeping the appropriate distance.

‘I get criticised for being too hard – now someone is trying to make out that I’m too familiar with the players. Work out what you want me to be!’

His player-coach relationship with Cipriani was known to have been tense and strained, but Jones claimed that the last contact between them had been cordial, in sad circumstances.

He said: ‘I sent him a note when his previous girlfriend committed suicide, to ask if he was alright, just out of courtesy.’

More than 100 business leaders in New York City have penned an open letter calling on President Joe Biden to ‘take immediate action to better control the border’ and speed up the asylum and work authorization process for migrants.

The letter published on Monday was addressed to ‘President Biden and Congressional Leaders’ and backed New York Governor Kathy Hochul‘s recent plea for more federal resources to respond to the migrant influx.

The letter comes as New York City has been overrun with 100,000 migrants, filling shelters and leaving many to sleep on the sidewalks throughout Manhattan.

‘The New York business community is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the continued flow of asylum-seekers into our country,’ the letter stated.

‘The situation is overwhelming the resources not only of the border region but of city and state governments across the nation,’ it added, noting that New York City alone has received more than 100,000 migrants whose ultimate asylum and work status remains unclear.

A White House official responded in a statement to DailyMail.com, saying the Biden administration ‘has led the largest expansion of lawful pathways to immigration in decades,’ and is ‘committed to building a humane, safe, and orderly immigration system’.

Signatories of the recent open letter included Pfizer’s Albert Bourla, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jaime Dimon, Jeff Gennette of Macy’s and Goldman Sachs boss David Solomon.

The letter backed Hochul’s recent plea for Biden to take urgent action to help her state absorb a surge of international migrants who have strained New York’s resources and filled homeless shelters.

‘In addition, there is a compelling need for expedited processing of asylum applications and work permits for those who meet federal eligibility standards,’ the letter added.

‘Immigration policies and control of our country’s border are clearly a federal responsibility; state and local governments have no standing in this matter,’ the letter noted.

The White House official told DailyMail.com: ‘Those who arrive through those lawful pathways are immediately eligible to request an employment authorization document.’

The official noted the current process for asylum applications and employment authorization is set by law, which can only be changed by Congress, and noted: ‘The law establishes a 180-day waiting period to obtain a work authorization.’

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told DailyMail.com that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had recently tasked ‘an expert team’ with assessing New York City’s migrant operations.

‘The team was impressed with the exceptional efforts by New York officials under the ongoing strain of accepting a large number of migrants and has provided recommendations for improvements, including data collection, case management, and increased communication with migrants on work authorizations,’ the spokesperson said.

A federal official said the Biden administration had provided New York access to an FAA hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which is being used to shelter 800 single males.

Eleven other federal sites across New York state are being reviewed as potential locations to shelter migrants, the person said.

The migrant humanitarian crisis in New York, long seen as friendly to immigrants, is increasingly driving a wedge between local elected Democrats and the Biden administration.

In a rare public address last week, Hochul said she sent the president a letter asking him to expedite work permits for migrants and provide financial resources to help care for the estimated 100,000 asylum seekers who have come to the state in the last year, mostly to New York City.

‘The reality is that we’ve managed thus far without substantive support from Washington, and despite the fact that this is a national, and indeed an inherently federal issue,’ Hochul said in a speech delivered in Albany. ‘But New York has shouldered this burden for far too long.’

The public plea came after months of private requests to the White House.

The central request of the governor’s letter was for the president to speed up the months-long bureaucratic process under which migrants can obtain work permits, and earn enough money to get off of public assistance.

‘Let them work,’ Hochul said, in remarks directed at the White House.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, also a Democrat, has repeatedly made an identical demand.

New York has always prided itself on its ability to absorb waves of immigrants, but it has struggled to handle the thousands who have come over the past year, many on buses paid for by the state of Texas to rid itself of people entering the US across the southern border.

New York Democrats initially blamed Republican governors of southern states – such as Texas’ Greg Abbott and Florida’s Ron DeSantis – for the crisis, but have increasingly sought to characterize it is a national problem that should be solved by the federal government.

The situation has also provided Republicans in the state with a new political front from which to attack Democrats after an election year where the GOP made gains by criticizing liberals as slow to respond to concerns over crime.

‘Kathy Hochul´s solution after twiddling her thumbs after so many months is to write a strongly worded letter to Joe Biden? Come on, it´s not serious,’ said David Laska, New York Republican Party spokesperson.

The situation has also created tension between Democrats within the state.

As New York City’s homeless shelter system became overwhelmed, and the cost of housing migrants in hotels and temporary shelters mounted, Adams began organizing bus trips of his own to take migrants to other parts of the state, to the frustration of officials in those communities.

Lawyers for Hochul and Adams have sparred in court over how best to house and expend resources to care for the migrants.

Four-fifths of New Yorkers say the recent influx of migrants is a ‘serious problem’ for the state, according to a recent poll

The state has earmarked up to $1.5 billion for its migrant response. Hochul asked Biden for financial assistance to help cover those costs and a projected $4.5 billion needed next year.

In addition, the governor requested that the city and state be allowed to use federally-owned properties to house migrants.

New York City shelters have been at near capacity and officials have scrambled to set up temporary housing in hotels, recreational centers, school gyms and a hospital parking lot. The city is legally obligated to find shelter for anyone needing it.

Republicans are already seeing the response to this wave of migrants as an opportunity for campaigning in the 2024 election.

‘New Yorkers won’t forget what happened on Kathy Hochul’s watch,’ Laska said.

‘They won’t forget that communities from all over the state have been strained beyond their ability to handle this influx of migrants and the real solution is to close the border.’

The city’s migrant situation has also led to clashes, such as on Sunday when protestors and counter-protestors battled outside Adams’ Gracie Mansion.

About half of the 100 people gathered were espousing messages demanding the shelters stop and the migrants be sent away, while others were counter-protesters who also denounced what they called the ‘white supremacist NYPD.’

Open Letter to the President & Congressional Leaders from Concerned Business Leaders Regarding the Asylum-Seekers Humanitarian Crisis

August 28, 2023

Dear President Biden and Congressional Leaders:

The New York business community is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the continued flow of asylum-seekers into our country. The situation is overwhelming the resources not only of the border region but of city and state governments across the nation. New York City, alone, has received more than 100,000 asylum seekers whose status is uncertain and who lack authorization to work. Increasingly, these are families with young children.

We write to support the request made by New York Governor Hochul for federal funding for educational, housing, security, and health care services to offset the costs that local and state governments are incurring with limited federal aid. In addition, there is a compelling need for expedited processing of asylum applications and work permits for those who meet federal eligibility standards. Immigration policies and control of our country’s border are clearly a federal responsibility; state and local governments have no standing in this matter.

There are labor shortages in many U.S. industries, where employers are prepared to offer training and jobs to individuals who are authorized to work in the United States. The business community is also providing in-kind assistance and philanthropic support to organizations that are addressing the immediate needs of this largely destitute population.

Bipartisan action by Congress and the Administration is ultimately the way to resolve immigration issues, but that will take time. In the interim, we urge you to take immediate action to better control the border and the process of asylum and provide relief to the cities and states that are bearing the burdens posed by the influx of asylum seekers.

The letter was signed by more than 100 business leaders, including:

Albert Bourla, Chairman & CEO, Pfizer Inc. and Co-Chair, Partnership for New York City

Rob Speyer, President & CEO, Tishman Speyer and Co-Chair, Partnership for New York City

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales has apologised for kissing player Jenni Hermoso following his country’s Women’s World Cup final win over England in Australia.

The football chief had faced a wave of criticism and resignation calls after planting the unsolicited kiss on Jenni’s lips following the match.

In a video address today after leading politicians said he should quit or apologise, Rubiales admitted he had made a mistake.

He started the video by saying the Spanish team had achieved an ‘historic feat’ and it was one of the ‘happiest’ days for Spanish football.

But he added: ‘There is also something I regret and it’s over something that happened between a female player and myself who enjoy a magnificent relationship the same as I have with other women players.

‘I’ve no doubt made a mistake and I have to admit it.’

He continued: ‘At a moment of maximum excitement, without any bad intention or bad faith, what happened happened in a very spontaneous manner, I repeat without bad faith on either side.

‘We didn’t understand really what occurred afterwards because we saw it as something normal and natural but it has caused a controversy in some sectors and some people appear to have been upset and therefore I have to apologise.

‘Moreover I have to learn from this and understand that when someone presides an institution as important as the Spanish FA he has to take more care in events like ceremonies.’

Defending his initial reaction in the wake of the controversy, when he branded the people who had criticised the kiss as ‘idiots’, and admitting he was saddened because it had tainted the historic Spanish victory, he continued: ‘Within the Spanish FA no-one lent the slightest importance to this but outside it seems they have.

‘I also want to apologise to those people because if people have been affected outside, they will no doubt have their reasons.’

Rubiales made his public apology as he faced resignation calls over his controversial post-Women’s World Cup celebrations which included giving player Jenni Hermoso an unwanted kiss on the lips.

The 45-year-old had been accused of committing ‘sexual violence’ overnight by Spain’s acting Equality Minister Irene Montero for the unsolicited smacker following the country’s 1-0 win against England.

He initially laughed it off as a ‘peck on the lips between two friends celebrating something’ even though 33-year-old Jenni admitted she hadn’t liked it in a post-match live online stream from the dressing room.

Footage subsequently emerged of Rubiales grabbing his crotch and appearing to make an obscene gesture during his wild celebrations in the stands beside Spain’s Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter.

This morning Anna Caula, General Secretary of Sport for the regional Catalan government, said he should resign.

She called the kiss he planted on Jenni Hermoso’s lips as a ‘harsh aggression’ and added: ‘We must be aware there are things that are not a price that we should have to pay.

‘In football things are still not equal, we still have a lot of work to do.

‘It is up to a president of the Spanish FA to be scrupulous in the way he behaves himself

‘The explanation for this kiss and the subsequent declarations that have been made justifying it means us normalising attitudes that are not acceptable.’

Marta Lois, parliamentary spokesperson for Spanish left-wing coalition party Sumar, said: ‘This type of sexist behaviour towards the Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso is intolerable.

‘Mr Rubiales must resign. It’s shocking.’

Colleague Ernest Urtasum insisted Rubiales should resign ‘tomorrow’ insisting: ‘The image he has shown the world is one of repugnant machoism. This cannot go unpunished.’

Spanish politician Pablo Echenique, a member of hard-left wing party Podemos, was among those who picked up on Rubiales’ crotch grab while the controversy surrounding his kiss was still raging.

He tweeted along video footage of the alleged obscene gesture: ‘As well as giving Jenni Hermoso a non-consensual kiss on the lips while he grabbed her head, an act that could represent the commission of a crime, Rubiales also celebrated Spain’s victory grabbing his testicles next to the queen and her daughter.’

He also posted a photo of the Spanish FA president planting a sloppy kiss on the left cheek of goalscorer Olga Carmona, who learnt after the match her father had died, and wrote on his Twitter feed: ‘Here he is too with Olga Carmona.

‘It seems this guy was drooling over and stalking the whole team.’

Rubiales has yet to comment on the claims he grabbed his private parts in front of Spain’s leading female royals.

He was filmed in the dressing room after yesterday’s World Cup final, announcing a trip to Ibiza for Spain’s winning women as a prize before joking in front of Jenni Hermoso and her teammates: ‘In Ibiza we’ll be celebrating Jenni and Luis Rubiales’ wedding.

Hermoso admitted she hadn’t liked the kiss in a live online stream to fans from the dressing room.

In subsequent comments facilitated by Spain’s FA, the Madrid-born footballer who currently plays for Mexican side Pachuca, referred to the moment as a ‘mutually and totally spontaneous gesture’ and insisted: ‘The president and I have a great relationship.’

Calls to ban cereal and yoghurt manufacturers from putting cartoon characters on the side of boxes were rejected today.

Influential experts want firms to adopt plain packaging on sugar-laden cereals and yoghurts.

Products packed with up to four teaspoons of sugar are designed to attract children  through the use of characters, animations and bright colours, obesity campaigners say.

Some companies even use superheroes such as Spider-Man and Disney favourites like Stitch to lure children.

But health minister Will Quince branded Action on Sugar’s proposal a ‘nanny-state intervention’ and said plain packaging would be a ‘step too far’.

A MailOnline audit of more than 200 cereals sold in supermarkets revealed Kellogg's Frosties Cereal (37g) and Crunchy Nut (35g) contain more sugar than half a packet of 'choc chip' Maryland cookies (31g)

A MailOnline audit of more than 200 cereals sold in supermarkets revealed Kellogg’s Frosties Cereal (37g) and Crunchy Nut (35g) contain more sugar than half a packet of ‘choc chip’ Maryland cookies (31g)

He told Times Radio: ‘It’s one of those things where it should be in moderation. Yes, I do let my children have those cereals, but not every day.

‘And actually what we need to do, and I think the companies that manufacture these products need to do, is help educate parents as to what is actually in their products and ensure that it is a treat and it is not a daily product they should be consuming.

‘But that very much should be for the parent to make that decision.’

Mr Quince added: ‘I’m not in favour of those kinds of nanny state interventions because as a parent, it’s my responsibility to educate my child as to what is and isn’t appropriate for daily consumption and as a treat.

‘I like Krave cereal as much as the next person… it’s very nice, but would I have it every day? No, because I know the implications of that. I want to educate my children about that.

‘So what it means is we need to empower people to make healthier life choices.

‘And that means putting information like calories and sugar content and salt content on the front and centre of packets that is already there. But if we need to go further, we can look at that but I think plain packaging is certainly a step too far.’

Research by Action on Sugar, based at Queen Mary University of London, compared cereals and yogurts offered by different companies in the UK.

It found 47 per cent of cereals and 65 per cent of yogurts contained a third of the recommended daily maximum sugar intake for a four to six-year-old, excluding the milk.

Health officials advise 4 to 6-year-olds consume no more than 19g of added sugar per day, equivalent to 5 teaspoons. These are sugars added to food or drink, rather than those that occur naturally.

However, the Lidl Crownfield Choco Hazelnut Pillows cereal contained 28.5g sugars per 100g, equal to 8.6g of sugar or 2 teaspoons per serving.

What should a balanced diet look like?

Meals should be based on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy carbohydrates, ideally wholegrain, according to the NHS

Meals should be based on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy carbohydrates, ideally wholegrain, according to the NHS

  • Eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. All fresh, frozen, dried and canned fruit and vegetables count;
  • Base meals on potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or other starchy carbohydrates, ideally wholegrain;
  • 30 grams of fibre a day: This is the same as eating all of the following: 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, 2 whole-wheat cereal biscuits, 2 thick slices of wholemeal bread and large baked potato with the skin on;
  • Have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks) choosing lower fat and lower sugar options;
  • Eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins (including 2 portions of fish every week, one of which should be oily);
  • Choose unsaturated oils and spreads and consuming in small amounts;
  • Drink 6-8 cups/glasses of water a day;
  • Adults should have less than 6g of salt and 20g of saturated fat for women or 30g for men a day.

A MailOnline audit of more than 200 cereals sold in supermarkets revealed that the worst offender had even more than that, though.

Malt O Meal Marshmallow Mateys sold at Sainsbury’s contains 41g per 100g — more than two Lotus Biscoff Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

For comparison, a McDonald’s small chocolate milkshake has 27g.

Kellogg’s Frosties Cereal (37g) and Crunchy Nut (35g) contain more sugar than half a packet of ‘choc chip’ Maryland cookies (31g).

Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut Salted Caramel (32g) and Crunchy Nut Chocolate Clusters (30g) are the next most sugary cereals.

Adding 125ml of whole milk can add, on average, around 7g of sugar. Milk does not count as an added sugar.

Graham MacGregor, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary University of London and chairman of Action on Sugar, said: ‘Obesity is estimated to cost the UK £58billion each year, having a huge impact on economic productivity and the NHS.

‘Drastic changes are needed to the food system and that includes responsible marketing of food and drink, especially to children.’

In terms of yoghurts, Action on Sugar’s analysis found Nestlé Smarties Vanilla had 14.6g of sugars per 100g, equal to 4 teaspoons sugar per serving.

Dr Kawther Hashem, campaign lead at Action on Sugar, said: ‘It’s ludicrous that whilst breakfast cereals and yoghurts celebrate the largest reductions in sugars during the Sugar Reduction Programme, those same products with child-appealing packaging still have excessive amounts of sugars, unsuitable for regular intake by children.

‘Given the soaring numbers of under-18s suffering weight-related health problems and tooth decay being the leading cause of child hospitalisation, now is the time for companies to be forced to remove child-appealing packaging from products that are misleading parents and making our children unhealthy and sick.’

Action on Sugar wants firms to remove cartoon characters, animations and vibrant colours from food graded as high or medium for sugar, salt or saturated fat, based on the Department for Health’s nutrition guidelines.

Christopher Snowdon, of the Institute of Economic Affairs thinktank, told MailOnline: ‘The government is right to give this policy the thumbs down. Something similar was tried in Chile a few years ago without success.

‘We have heard quite enough from Action on Sugar for one lifetime. None of their anti-obesity policies have worked anywhere.’

A Kellogg’s spokesperson said: ‘We offer a broad range of cereals to meet our shoppers’ needs, whether that’s an indulgent cereal for a treat or a family breakfast cereal that’s lower in sugar. We understand we have a role to help people make healthier choices. That’s why since 2011, we’ve reduced sugar across our cereals by 18% and salt by 23%.

‘For those wanting a lower sugar option, many of our cereals, including Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Coco Pops and Special K Original are classed as non-high in fat, salt and sugar (non-HFSS) using the government’s own nutrition standards. Four out of our five top-selling cereals are non-HFSS.’

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: ‘We offer a range of branded and own brand breakfast cereal products in our stores to offer our customers choice.

‘This cereal is a branded item, which is imported as part of our world food range and found in the American section of some of our stores.’

MailOnline’s analysis was based on nutritional information taken from websites in August 2023.

Rugby legend calls for Matildas to complete revenge mission on England after the pain of the 2003 World Cup: ‘It still haunts me’

Two decades on and the Wallabies‘ infamous extra-time final loss to England in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final still haunts Mat Rogers.

The dual international has never watched a replay of the game, having no desire to relive Jonny Wilkinson’s painful drop goal with 28 seconds remaining in Australia’s 20-17 loss at Sydney‘s Stadium Australia.

“I know what happened. Not a fond memory, unfortunately,” Rogers told AAP on Tuesday.

It’s little wonder, then, that Rogers would love nothing more than for the Matildas to gain a semblance of revenge for the Wallabies – and an entire nation – over the old enemy on Wednesday night.

The Matildas’ Women’s World Cup semi-final against the Lionesses is unquestionably the biggest sporting contest at the same venue between Australia and England since that fateful November night 20 years ago.

“They probably say they owe us from the Ashes that just happened. But there is nothing better than getting one over the Poms,” said Rogers, who still loses sleep over not playing his own opportunistic role in changing the course of sporting history.

The Matildas have surged into a World Cup semifinal against England and Mat Rogers hopes they win to partially erase the pain of losing the Rugby World Cup to England in 2003

The fullback was under captain’s orders from George Gregan to send the clearing kick to the sideline for a lineout, rather than allowing England to counter-attack.

But a crash tackle from England flanker Lewis Moody knocked Rogers off balance.

“I was moving to my left and could only go to the left, which is fine being a left-footer, but it cut my angle down,” Rogers recalled.

“I wasn’t going to be able to get yardage. I remember thinking in that split second ‘should I just reef it straight down the middle of the field and back our defence?’.

“And I didn’t. I thought I’d just stick to the game plan.

“We still defended well off the back of the lineout but (halfback Matt) Dawson threw the dummy, went through the hole and it was all over.

“It was brutal. It still haunts me.”

With Rogers’ 15-year-old daughter Phoenix playing soccer for Gold Coast United in the National Premier League, with aspirations of one day herself being a Matilda, the former Cronulla, Gold Coast, Queensland State of Origin and Australia rugby league star is extra invested in the World Cup.

“I’m not just on the bandwagon. I’m proper into it,” he said.

“We’ve met the players, gone to other games prior to World Cups, had photos with the girls.”

He’s a true believer, likening the patriotic fervour for the Matildas to that which the Wallabies enjoyed 20 years ago at their home World Cup.

“There are a lot of parallels,” Rogers said.

“We were sort of the underdogs too.

“We’d been pumped earlier in the season by the All Blacks but as the competition went on and we beat the All Blacks in the semi-finals, people were excited. The country just lit up.”

Rogers can see the irony if the Matildas beat England on penalties to advance to the final.

“Not the nicest way to win,” he said “But if you win that way, you’ll take it.”

2019: In January, Apple reports its first decline in revenues and profits in a decade. CEO Tim Cook partly blamed steep declines in revenue from China.

2020: In March, Apple closes all its bricks and mortar retail stores outside of China in response to coronavirus.

2021: In an online virtual event in April CEO Tim Cook declared Apple’s goal of becoming carbon neutral for Earth Day. Later in the year the iPhone 13 was announced.

2022: In September the iPhone 14 was announced. One of the new features included a new sensor to detect if a user had been in a car crash as well as an improved camera system.

2023: So far this year Apple has brought back its ‘Home Pod’ after the first generation was discontinued. The ‘Home Pod’ can be seen as an alternative to Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home as it is powered by voice commands.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for supporters to protest and ‘stand up for their rights’ after he was sentenced to three years in jail for illegally selling state gifts he received while premier.

The 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was arrested after police descended on his home in Lahore – Pakistan’s second biggest city. He will now be taken to the capital, Islamabad, before being imprisoned in the central jail in Adyala, Rawalpindi.

‘I have just received the information that Imran Khan has been arrested,’ Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, told reporters.

After he was taken away by police Saturday, a video statement Khan made before his arrest was posted to his Twitter account with him urging his supporters not to stay silent.

‘My fellow Pakistanis, they will have arrested me and I’ll be in jail by the time this message reaches you. I have just one request and appeal, that you are not to sit silently at home,’ he said.

‘This is a war for justice, for your rights, for your freedom… chains don’t just fall off, they have to be broken. You must continue peaceful protest until you get your rights.’

Police have already been pictured making arrests as protests from Khan’s supporters began almost immediately after his arrest – just months after mass demonstrations took place when he was detained in May.

Legal experts say guilty verdict reached by a district court could end Khan’s chances of participating in national elections that have to be held before early November.

Khan was not present for the hearing at the Islamabad High Court, and the judge ordered his immediate arrest and banned him from politics for five years. It’s the second time the popular opposition leader has been detained this year

‘Judge Humayun Dilawar announced that involvement in corrupt practices has been proven,’ Pakistan TV said.

Khan is facing over 150 cases brought against him since being ousted in April last year – charges he says are politically motivated. Khan’s legal team said they would be filing an immediate appeal.

‘It’s important to mention there was no chance given to present witnesses, neither was time allotted to round up arguments,’ a member of the team said.

The sentence relates to an inquiry conducted by the election commission, which found Khan guilty of unlawfully selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

Khan – who was ousted after a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022 – denies any wrongdoing.

The former Pakistan PM is accused of misusing his premiership to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees.

His dramatic arrest in May – where he was filmed being forcibly removed from court by security officers – sparked nationwide violent demonstrations from supporters of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in almost all of the country’s major cities.

Hundreds of protesters were arrested after government and military property was attacked and at least eight people died as unrest gripped Pakistan.

In the aftermath of his release following three days in custody, PTI has been targeted by a crackdown with thousands of arrests, reports of intimidation and muzzling of the press.

Among the hundreds of cases brought against him, several involve corruption, terrorism and inciting people to violence over the deadly protests.

His arrest followed months of political crisis and came hours after the powerful military rebuked the former international cricketer for alleging a senior officer had been involved in a plot to kill him, which saw an assassination attempt last year.

Khan has long warned he would be arrested to prevent him participating in elections that are due to be held before the end of the year.

Parliament is likely to be dissolved after it completes its term in the next two weeks, with national elections to be held by mid-November or earlier.

Khan rose to power in 2018 on a wave of popular support, an anti-corruption manifesto, and the backing of the powerful military establishment.

When he was ousted in April last year, analysts said it was because he lost the backing of the top generals.

In his campaign for re-election, Khan has highlighted the power the top brass wield behind the scenes – a subject historically considered a red line in Pakistan.

While many analysts believe Khan came to power with the help of the military, the former cricketer has been one of the army’s most vocal critics.

Khan is the seventh former prime minister to be arrested in Pakistan. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was arrested and hanged in 1979. The current prime minister’s brother, Nawaz Sharif, who also served as prime minister, was arrested several times on corruption allegations.

Sunrise host Natalie Barr rips into the Big Four Aussie banks: Here’s how they are giving YOU a raw deal as they make millions

  • Major banks to crop grilling in parliament this week
  • CEO’s of Westpac, NAB, ANZ and CBA to front the inquiry
  • Banks to be grilled over interest rates for savings accounts

Sunrise host Natalie Barr has ripped into Australia’s biggest banks as the Big Four prepare to front a parliamentary inquiry into savings rates.

Australia’s major banks are set to cop a grilling this week as chief executives appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Economics.

The CEO’s of NAB, Westpac, ANZ and Commonwealth Bank will be asked why interest rate rises are not being passed on in full to customers’ savings accounts, despite passing them on in full to mortgage holders.

While the national interest rate sits at 4.1 per cent, the ongoing rates on the major banks’ online savings accounts remains between 1.05 and 2.15 per cent.

Finance expert Steve Mickenbecker labelled it a ‘raw deal’ for customers with Barr joining in on the pile-on.

‘We all know we want strong banks and we do have them in this country, but is this being a bit rich?’ Barr asked Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume on Wednesday.

‘What would you do to fix this problem?’

The shadow finance minister said the only way interest rates could be brought back back down was by getting inflation under control.

‘That’s why we want to make sure the government make sure that its fiscal responsibility is being met, it’s reigning in and suspending suspicions,’ she said.

‘You’ve got to reign in your spending to do that and that way we don’t have to keep raising interest rates and punishing mortgage holders more and more.’

Ms Hume said the major banks would be held to account during the inquiry.

‘That’s a good thing, we want to make sure that when they’ve raised those [interest] rates that it’s done so in a timely and transparent way,’ she said.

‘They’ll have to answer to members of parliament as to why they haven’t done that.’

Since May 2022, Australia’s major banks have passed on repeated rate rises in full to variable mortgage customers but not to all savings accounts.

The ongoing rates in online saver accounts have only increased by between 1.05 and 2.15 per cent in the last 14 months of repeated rate hikes.

This means people who have an existing online savings account with the big four have missed out on up to 2.95 percentage points.

The move has drawn outrage with financial comparison website Canstar group executive financial services Steve Mickenbecker calling it a ‘raw deal’ for customers.

‘Savers should do well in a rising-interest-rate environment, and some are, but there is a whole group getting a raw deal,’ he said.

‘Savers who have their money in a regular savings account … are setting and forgetting their way to substandard interest returns when they should be on the winning side of rate increases.’

Sally Tindall, the research director at RateCity.com.au, said customers of the big four shouldn’t assume they were getting each rate hike in full.

‘While the big banks have increased some savings rates by more than the RBA hikes, which is fantastic, millions of customers with online saver accounts are on ongoing rates that are around half, if not a quarter of the current cash rate,’ she said.

‘That’s about as far from fantastic as it can get.’

Ms Tinfall said savings accounts had been purposefully designed to catch customers out with an abundance of fine print, balance caps and introductory rates.

‘The big four banks should consider simplifying their savings account options to make it easier to understand and navigate for all customers, instead of the survival of the fittest approach they’ve adopted thus far,’ she said.

The chief executives of ANZ and NAB will appear before the parliamentary inquiry on Wednesday, with CBA and Westpac to follow on Thursday.
