Former Proud Boys boss Enrique Tarrio has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison after begging a judge for mercy for commanding the Capitol siege – the longest sentence handed down over January 6.

Tarrio, 39, was the final leader of the neo-fascist group convicted of seditious conspiracy to be sentenced and faced 33 years in prison. Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that Tarrio was ‘the ultimate leader of that conspiracy,’ but still did not abide by the government’s sentence request.

During his hearing, Tarrio dropped a bombshell and admitted that Trump lost the 2020 election. ‘On November 3, 2020, something that I never expected happened – my candidate lost. I felt like something was personally stolen from me.’

The Florida-native turned to blame the right-wing media saying: ‘Every media channel that I turned to told me I was justified.’ He said that he was ‘not a political zealot’ and changing the outcome of the election was not his goal on January 6.

The far-right propagandist wasn’t in Washington on January 6 – he was arrested two days earlier in a separate case – but he was convicted of helping put in motion and encourage the violence interrupted Congress‘ certification of Biden’s electoral victory after Donald Trump‘s electoral loss.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and escorted by U.S. Marshals, the Cuban-American from Florida took the stand to ask judge Timothy Kelly for mercy, apologizing to the officers who responded during the riot and the citizens of D.C., saying he ‘blamed himself.’

‘Today I stand before you a different man… I wish to reorient my life’s purpose… I want to rejoin my local church and be an active part of helping others,’ Tarrio told the court. ‘I hope your honor can hear the sincerity… please show me mercy… ‘Do not take my 40s from me… God bless this entire court.’

He claimed that he had really believed the presidential election was stolen and let media coverage influence his desire to ‘protect’ right wingers from Antifa protesters.

‘I have failed as a son, as a fiancée, as a brother, as a nephew… I have been selfish,’ Tarrio said.

Judge Kelly said of January 6: ‘That day broke our previously unbroken tradition of the peaceful transfer of power, which is truly among the most precious things that we had as Americans… that previously unbroken string is now broken. And it’s going to take time and effort to fix it.’

The judge seemed to be particularly disturbed by Tarrio’s infamously comparison of the January 6 rioters to the nation’s founding fathers.

He added: ‘[Tarrio’s] apologized here today, but I must say, comparing what Dominic Pezzola did to George Washington – the man who helped encourage the notion of a peaceful, orderly transfer of power – by relinquishing power to let someone else be chosen… it slanders the father of our country.’

Three fellow Proud Boys found guilty by a Washington D.C. jury of the rarely used sedition charge were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 18 years – less than prosecutors wanted.

Tarrio’s defense team argued during the sentencing hearing that the convicted sedition conspiracist is a ‘misguided patriot’ instead of a terrorist, and was just being a ‘Keyboard Ninja,’ saying things ‘he shouldn’t have,’ as reported by independent journalist Gonzo News.

Judge Kelly reminded Tarrio’s lawyers team that a jury did not buy that defense strategy when it decided to convict him, and ruled that Tarrio was at the top of the Proud Boy’s command structure during the riot.

Ultimately the judge ruled Tarrio’s crimes intended to coerce the conduct of government when his lieutenants brought down a barrier between police and rioters and thus qualified him for terrorism enhancement for his sentencing.

However, the judge again noted the Proud Boys’ crimes did not have the terror ‘intent’ of someone who blows up a building.

Tarrio’s aunt and godmother sent in letters pleading for leniency which were read by defense attorney Nayib Hassan.

‘Henry [Tarrio’s birth name] is not a monster like he’s made out to be,’ the letter read.

Tarrio’s mother, fiancée, and his younger sister also spoke of Tarrio’s character as they asked for leniency, saying his incarceration has greatly affected his family.

The younger sister teared up as she spoke, saying: ‘he is the glue that keeps us together… the idea of him not being around for all the milestones is hard to bear.’

The Justice Department has asked for Tarrio to spend more than three decades in prison, describing him as the ringleader of a plot to use violence to shatter the cornerstone of American democracy and overturn the election victory by Joe Biden, a Democrat, over Trump, the Republican incumbent.

Tarrio discussed ‘revolutions’ and ‘storming’ the Capitol complex prior to January 6, but was arrested upon entry into the capital on January 5, 2021 for a prior offense of burning the Black Lives Matter flag and on several weapons charges.

The Miami native was supposed to be sentenced last week in Washington’s federal court, but his hearing was delayed because Judge Kelly got sick.

Kelly, who was nominated to the bench by Trump, sentenced Tarrio’s co-defendants to lengthy prison terms – though far shorter than prosecutors were seeking.

Self-described Proud Boys organizer Joe Biggs sobbed as he was sentenced to 17 years on Thursday for his role in the riot after pleading for leniency to take care of his daughter and ailing mother.

Judge Kelly wasn’t having it, as he said Americans are the envy of the world and U.S. elections must be respected, telling Biggs: ‘You did play a role in riling up the crowd.

‘If you don’t like how an election is being conducted… you can speak out, call, write or meet with election officials. You can engage in peaceful protest. File a lawsuit.’

The judge ruled that Biggs qualified for a terrorism sentencing enhancement because he teared down a fence that stood between police and rioters.

Prosecutors on Tuesday asked Kelly to hand out a harsher punishment for Tarrio than his co-defendants, arguing he was the leader of the operation, and as a someone with a criminal record was a less sympathetic figure than Biggs, who’s a veteran.

‘We need to make sure the consequences are clear to anybody who might be unhappy with any future election as long as this case is remembered…this was a calculated act of terrorism,’ prosecutors said during the sentencing.

Ethan Nordean, who prosecutors said was the Proud Boys’ leader on the ground on January 6, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, tying the record for the longest sentence in the attack.

Prosecutors had asked for 27 years for Nordean, who was a Seattle-area Proud Boys chapter president.

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, who was found guilty of seditious conspiracy in a separate case, was sentenced in May to 18 years in prison. Prosecutors, who had sought 25 years for Rhodes, are appealing his sentence and the punishments of other members of his antigovernment militia group.

‘Tarrio has repeatedly and publicly indicated that he has no regrets about what he helped make happen on January 6,’ prosecutors wrote in court documents.

Lawyers for the Proud Boys deny that there was any plot to attack the Capitol or stop the transfer of presidential power.

‘There is zero evidence to suggest Tarrio directed any participants to storm the U.S. Capitol building prior to or during the event,’ his attorneys wrote in court papers.

‘Participating in a plan for the Proud Boys to protest on January 6 is not the same as directing others on the ground to storm the Capitol by any means necessary.’

Police arrested Tarrio in Washington on Jan. 4, 2021, on charges that he defaced a Black Lives Matter banner during an earlier rally in the nation´s capital, but law enforcement officials later said he was arrested in part over concerns about the potential for unrest during the certification. He complied with a judge´s order to leave the city after his arrest.

On Jan. 6, dozens of Proud Boys leaders, members and associates were among the first rioters to breach the Capitol. The mob´s assault overwhelmed police, forced lawmakers to flee the House and Senate floors and disrupted the joint session of Congress for certifying Biden´s victory.

The backbone of the government´s case was hundreds of messages exchanged by Proud Boys in the days leading up to Janury 6.

As Proud Boys swarmed the Capitol, Tarrio cheered them on from afar, writing on social media: ‘Do what must be done.’ In a Proud Boys encrypted group chat later that day someone asked what they should do next.

Tarrio responded: ‘Do it again.’

Prosecutors argued the Proud Boys were at the front lines of the mob on Capitol grounds and were there when the first barriers were breached

‘Make no mistake,’ Tarrio wrote in another message. ‘We did this.’

Tarrio led the neo-fascist group – known for street fights with left-wing activists – when Trump infamously told the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by’ during his first debate with Joe Biden.

During the month long trial, prosecutors argued that the Proud Boys viewed themselves as foot soldiers fighting for Trump as the Republican spread lies that Democrats stole the election from him.

Attorneys argued that members of the group were prepared to go to war to keep their preferred leader in power.

Defense lawyers denied there was any plot to attack the Capitol or stop Congress’ certification of Biden’s win.

The investigation has become the largest for the Justice Department in American history, and it hadn’t tried a seditious conspiracy case in over a decade.

The riots followed months of false claims by Trump and his allies that the election had been rigged against him.

A select House committee investigated the riots and in its final report accused Trump of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The committee estimated that from the election to Jan. 6, the president and aides made hundreds of efforts to pressure officials to overturn the results.

Targets included states he lost but that had GOP-led legislatures such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona.

Trump has since been indicted for this role in the riots, with a grand jury indictment accusing him of spreading ‘lies’ and ‘sham’ investigations while stoking an ‘angry’ mob on January 6.

Special Counsel Jack Smith said in a televised public statement following the release of the indictment that the attack on the Capitol was ‘fueled by lies’ made by Trump ‘targeted at obstructing the bedrock function of the U.S. government – the nation’s process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.’ He pledged that his office will conduct a ‘speedy’ trial.

Trump is facing four counts including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and obstruct the electoral count for trying to overturn the 2020 election. The 45-page indictment says he was ‘determined to remain in power’ despite ‘having lost.’

He and his six co-conspirators ‘used knowingly false claims of election fraud’ to try to ‘subvert the legitimate election results and change electoral votes’ to take down Joe Biden, according to the indictment.

He has plead not guilty.

A six-month-old boy prescribed an antiviral drug to treat Covid had a bizarre reaction – his dark brown eyes turned a bright blue within 18 hours of therapy.

The unnamed infant from Thailand was given favipiravir, a treatment commonly used for influenza and Ebola, which is approved as a Covid treatment in parts of Asia – but not yet approved in the US.

Doctors in Bangkok who treated the infant said the antiviral drug released a fluorescent chemical that accumulated in the boy’s corneas.

While the boy’s eyes changed hue shortly after receiving the treatment, they returned to their natural color five days after medication cessation.

The six-month-old boy's eyes are naturally dark brown. He was diagnosed with Covid and given favipiravir as a treatment - making him the youngest patient to receive the drug

In Thailand, favipiravir is the main antiviral given to children infected with SARS-CoV-2.

The most common side effects of the treatment include an increase of uric acid in the body, diarrhea and a low count of white blood cells, which account for roughly 20 percent of adverse events.

Favipiravir is approved in Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova and Kazakhstan and received approval for emergency use in Italy in 2020.

The US began trialing the drug in April 2020 with a small group of 50 people at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve favipiravir in the US.

The report on the infant was published in April 2023, but the exact date of the side effect is unknown.

On day one, he received 82 milligrams, and 18 hours later, his mother noticed the eye color change.

‘No bluish discoloration was observed in other areas such as skin, nails, or oral and nasal mucosa. Symptoms improved after three days of favipiravir therapy,’ the researchers wrote in the study published in the journal Frontiers in Pediatrics.

An eye examination was performed after treatment was over.

‘The patient was able to fix and follow the light in all directions,’ reads the study.

Researchers wrote that this fluorescence ‘may be due to the drug, its metabolites, or additional tablet components such as titanium dioxide and yellow ferric oxide.’

Several medications can affect the eye, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, blood thinners and antihistamines.

A class of medication called prostaglandins, used to treat glaucoma, has a side effect of darkening the iris color that can be permanent.

Doctors also found the cornea was clear and lacked a bluish corneal hue, and no blue pigment deposit was observed on the surface of the iris or the anterior lens capsule.

While the boy is the youngest patient to receive the treatment, he is not the first to experience the bizarre side effect.

A 2021 study reports the case of a 20-year-old man in India who endured the exact eye color change.

He received favipiravir, and on the second day, he noticed discoloration of his eyes – the same deep blue that returned to natural brown when treatment had stopped.

‘We assumed that the bluish corneal hue could be related to favipiravir and advised the patient to stop using favipiravir immediately. It was remarkable to note that the very next day, upon stopping favipiravir the patient’s corneas returned to normal color,’ reads the paper published by a team from Medicine Healthway Hospitals in India.

Following this case, the team sifted through the literature to find other instances but determined this man is the first case of favipiravir causing bluish discoloration of the corneas.

Boys should be exposed to ‘bromances’ in English lessons, like the one between Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, to promote close male friendships.

This is the view of an English teacher, who also believes Frodo and Sam in the Lord of the Rings are good role models for ‘bromance’.

Matt Pinkett, a teacher who challenges the ‘toxic masculinity’ encouraged by people like influencer Andrew Tate, wants boys in school to embrace the ’emotional openness’ of close male friendships dubbed ‘bromances’.

In a new book, he warns that the men boys encounter in literature at school are not ‘great examples of male kindness’.

Ebenezer Scrooge, for the majority of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is ‘a bit of a numpty’, for example, and Macbeth ‘kills lots of people’.

Many of the men in the GCSE curriculum are ‘tools’, he says – a term which means an unlikeable or foolish person.

In his book Boys Do Cry, due to be released next month (SUBS – pls keep name of book), Mr Pinkett, an English teacher in Surrey, states: ‘In order to combat the glut of male toolishness that pervades the GCSE curriculum, it’s important that at Key Stages 1, 2, and 3 we expose children to texts that include close, emotionally intimate, and enriching male relationships.

‘There are plenty of books out there brimming with bromantic relationships. ‘Sam and Frodo. Holmes and Watson.’

The teacher, who gathered evidence from school staff, wellbeing experts and therapists, encourages teachers to make close male relationships the norm by complimenting male colleagues.

They should discuss barriers to bromance, like fear of ridicule or people questioning boys’ sexuality if they have a close friendship.

The book also discusses how ‘bad banter’ between boys should be discouraged by teachers, as name-calling, mockery and ‘verbal abuse’ can make it hard for young men to admit when they are struggling with an issue.

Mr Pinkett says teachers should be aware of body image as a problem for boys, who are faced with ‘sun-kissed and statuesque exemplars of male bodily perfection on television programmes such as Love Island’ and social media influencers ‘whose abdominal muscles have abdominal muscles’.

He also believes Frodo and Sam in the Lord of the Rings are good role models for 'bromance'

Bigorexia, an anxiety disorder which leads someone to believe that they are too small or skinny, or that they are never muscly enough, can lead boys to become fixated on gaining muscle, doing excessive weight-training and taking anabolic steroids to bulk up.

The book advises teachers not to tell boys they’ve ‘shot up over the summer’ or say things like ‘I need a few strong boys to help me take these books next door’ which could make some children feel uncomfortable by suggesting some body types should be praised.

The book also suggests teachers teach boys about ‘unrealistic’ male bodies in adverts, on reality TV shows and social media, which may have been digitally altered, and that they warn about the potential negative consequences of steroid abuse, such as hair loss, breast development and severe acne.

Concerns are raised about PE lessons and sport in schools, which can lead to some boys being ‘ostracised and bullied for their lack of sporting or physical ability’, whilst those that excel in sport can become part of a culture where ‘toxic expectations of masculinity’ are expected and encouraged.

The book discusses that boys told problems by their friends are more likely to respond with humour, try to minimise the problem or blame their friend, and so may need to be helped learn how to listen.

On the role of teachers, Mr Pinkett said: ‘I am not suggesting that we should ever try to be therapists – that would never work.

‘But the fact is that we are in front of these children for massive chunks of their life.

‘If we can speak positively about male emotions and demonstrate ways of dealing with problematic feelings, that would be a powerful thing.’

He added: ‘We need to teach boys to be kind, and that it is OK to be vulnerable and emotionally articulate.’

CHILDHOOD BULLYING IS LINKED TO MANY LONG-TERM NEGATIVE MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES

Bullying can affect everyone; those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness bullying.

Bullying is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on mental health, substance use, and suicide.

It is important to talk to children to determine whether bullying, or something else, is a concern.

Children who are bullied

Children who are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues.

Children who are bullied are more likely to experience:

Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy.

These issues may persist into adulthood.

Health complaints

Decreased academic achievement—GPA and standardised test scores—and school participation.

They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school.

A very small number of bullied children might retaliate through extremely violent measures.

In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied.

Children who bully others

Childrens who bully others can also engage in violent and other risky behaviors into adulthood.

Children who bully are more likely to:

  • Abuse alcohol and other drugs in adolescence and as adults
  • Get into fights, vandalise property, and drop out of school
  • Engage in early sexual activity
  • Have criminal convictions and traffic citations as adults
  • Be abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, or children as adults

Bystanders

Children who witness bullying are more likely to:

  • Have increased use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs
  • Have increased mental health problems, including depression and anxiety
  • Miss or skip school

The Relationship between Bullying and Suicide

Media reports often link bullying with suicide. However, most youth who are bullied do not have thoughts of suicide or engage in suicidal behaviors.

Although children who are bullied are at risk of suicide, bullying alone is not the cause.

Many issues contribute to suicide risk, including depression, problems at home, and trauma history.

Additionally, specific groups have an increased risk of suicide, including black and minority ethnic, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

This risk can be increased further when these children are not supported by parents, peers, and schools.

Bullying can make an unsupportive situation worse.

It’s 1984. In the wake of the Falklands War and against the backdrop of the Troubles, five squaddies and an officer are laid up with injuries at the  Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital in Woolwich.

Jonathan Lewis was once stuck on such a ward as a young officer with an acute cyst on his bottom, and what he heard and saw forms the basis of his play, Our Boys, first performed in 1993.

As much as anything, it’s about killing time. Trooper Joe (Laurence Fox) has the lightest wounds. Rifleman Ian (Lewis Reeves) has a brain injury; an Ulster Ranger (Cian Barry) is there with a leg wound that may be all in the mind; a gunner, Mick (Matthew Lewis), is in for a circumcision, while a fusilier called Parry (Arthur Darvill) lost his toes to frostbite when an officer forbade him to remove his sodden boots.

Jolyon Coy plays the officer who reluctantly joins the japes, and exists, socially, in class limbo. He’s the only one to wear proper pyjamas but turns out to be a scholar, not a toff.

Most of the banter is as coarse as sandpaper: bowel trouble and circumcision provide ample scope for lots of Carry On-style comedy. But there’s also a sense of just how vulnerable these bedridden men are.

The cast is terrific, especially Fox, who is more coiled with anger than any of the others.  A survivor of an IRA bombing, his closing monologue is a devastating glimpse of the iceberg of pain that lies beneath the men’s visible wounds.

The play is full of compassion and humour – I laughed at the game of Beer Hunter, in which the men play Russian roulette with shaken cans of lager. But when the authorities rumble  the illegal party, the group’s solidity is undermined by an  act of betrayal.

Between the scenes comes the stabbing sounds of the era’s music, including The Jam, The Clash and XTC. David Grindley directs  with piercing insight into tenderness and rivalries  on the ward.

This is a funny, sorrowful evening, and an admirably non-tub-thumping comment on how cruelly injured soldiers become surplus to requirements having laid their lives on the line. It’s as shamefully true today as it ever was.

FINE ART: Joe Newman, lead singer of the Mercury awards winners Alt-J

Alt-J are four Leeds University graduates with one claim to fame: their debut album, An Awesome Wave, has just won the Mercury Music Prize for the Album of the Year. At their first London show since, they could have been expected to wallow in their triumph. If they were a hip-hop act, they would have talked of little else.

In the event, they didn’t mention it. The only thing being celebrated was Thom the drummer’s birthday: the others presented him with a cake, fondly brought on by their all-female support band, Stealing Sheep.

Like a once-scruffy neighbourhood, rock music is being rapidly gentrified. In the age of Mumford & Sons, we are getting used to hearing songs made by nice young people, but Alt-J take this to another level.

The first thing lead singer Joe Newman says is: ‘It’s lovely to be here – thank you so much for coming.’ The last thing he says is: ‘You’ve been amazing, we’ve had a lovely, lovely day for Thom’s birthday.’

Asked what they would do with their £20,000 Mercury cheque, Alt-J said they would buy flights to somewhere nice, and a slap-up meal in a restaurant – for their parents. Whatever happened to youthful rebellion?

But if all this makes them sound conservative, they are not. They are worthy winners of the Mercury, because they have moved music forwards. It took them five years to release their album and they used the time to develop a distinctive sound.

Newman’s vocals tend to start off pure as a choirboy before veering into an arty warble that stays just this side of irritating. Thom Green’s drums are all clicks and clacks, as if he is trying to be a machine.

Both of them, along with the bass player Gwil Sainsbury, studied fine art, and their canvases are crisp Mondrians rather than chaotic  Pollocks.

Newman’s guitar and Gus Unger-Hamilton’s synths are deployed as daubs of colour, never overdone. And almost every track has a catchy melody, a crunchy rhythm, or both. The whole package is complex, but effective.

The lyrics are studenty, but not in a bad way. In a world overstocked with love songs, it’s safe to say that nobody else has released one called Tessellate, or used the chat-up line ‘triangles are my favourite shape’.

Even the band’s name is triangular: on an Apple Mac, Alt-J is the keyboard shortcut for the Greek  letter delta. Their one concession to showmanship is to have a big neon delta sign behind them.

In rock ’n’ roll, the delta usually means the Mississippi delta, the crucible of the blues. Alt-J are in a different tradition, more English, eccentric and electronic. They were on a roll even before the Mercury, and now they are in the spotlight, their singles – none of which has gone higher than No 75 – are crying out for re-release. As well as Tessellate, Breezeblocks and Something Good come across as hits-in-waiting.

The Staves: Emily Staveley-Taylor, Jessica Staveley-Taylor and Camilla Staveley-Taylor

The Staves: Emily Staveley-Taylor, Jessica Staveley-Taylor and Camilla Staveley-Taylor

The Staves are also part of the polite-pop movement, but they lean towards the traditional. They are three sisters from Watford, Emily, Jessica and Camilla Staveley- Taylor: one better than the Pierces and the Webb Sisters, then.

They sing folk songs with a twist of Seventies singer-songwriter introspection. One reason why this generation of musicians are seldom rebellious is that they can’t argue with their parents’ record collection. Mr and Mrs Staveley-Taylor, both music-lovers, brought their girls up on The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and it shows in their ear for an elegant tune.

Their debut album, Dead & Born & Grown (Atlantic, out tomorrow) co-produced by Ethan Johns and his father Glyn, is entrancing from the opening minute of Wisely & Slow, which features no instruments at all – just the Staves’ three voices, playing off each other as only siblings can, blending, diverging and blending again.

You may struggle to work out which sister is which, but you don’t need to: just sit back and enjoy the beautiful noise.
