To British firearms officers, it could be a tempting recruitment offer from police in Australia: ‘We’ve got your backs, mate.’

The authorities Down Under yesterday stepped up their pitch to hire UK officers – pledging they wouldn’t drag them through years of hell if they shot someone.

The message will not be lost amid the current furore over a Met policeman charged with the murder of Chris Kaba, who was shot in south London last year.

Western Australia is pursuing an audacious bid to ‘steal’ hundreds of police officers by luring them from Britain to work in the sunshine.

It can be revealed that more than 1,400 applied to make the move after the huge recruitment drive was launched in February promoting the area’s wine regions, coral reefs and culinary scene.

And as the first cohort of 23 Brits was sworn in this week – in a ceremony under ‘magnificent clear blue skies’ – the message from Aussie police chiefs was clear: ‘We protect our officers.’

Western Australia’s minister for police Paul Papalia told the Mail: ‘It’s very topical because yesterday we had a fatal shooting by police in Kalgoorlie.

‘Without speaking in advance of the full investigation, I can tell you that our police officers behaved incredibly well. I’ve seen the body-worn camera footage.

‘They acted entirely in accordance with their protocols, responsibly and properly. Sadly, they’ve had to shoot someone for their own protection. They did it absolutely correctly.’

Mr Papalia said that within an hour of the fatal shooting – of a 58-year-old man who had charged at officers with a gun – the commissioner of police and a local senator had publicly backed the officers.

Anna Miller, a 38-year-old recruited from West Yorkshire Police, said moving to Australia had made her feel ‘supported and appreciated’.

Speaking from Perth, Western Australia, where she moved with her family seven weeks ago, she told the Mail: ‘The biggest thing we like here is the appreciation for the police. I did not feel at all appreciated in the UK. In Australia, the community support their cops and they trust them.

‘The feeling among myself and colleagues [in the UK] was that officers weren’t backed… it feels a little bit, as police officers, they will happily throw you under a bus to present a [more positive] picture to the public.

‘Don’t get me wrong, I had some fantastic supervisors, but I think policing as a whole, I don’t think they feel supported.’

Ms Miller worked at West Yorkshire Police for 15 years. She moved to Australia with her husband Andrew and their children Isabelle, seven, Tom, six, and Emma, three, for ‘an adventure’, saying: ‘It gives us the outdoor active lifestyle we wanted.

‘It’s fantastic. There is so much to do on your doorstep – we went kayaking and saw seals, there is snorkelling, fantastic cycle paths and the Australian people are so chilled, friendly and have an enthusiasm for life.’

Ben Woods, a 33-year-old sergeant from Sussex Police, added: ‘My colleagues were naturally sad to see me go, but are now sick of my social media – “can you stop posting beautiful beaches, and posting views with koalas”.’

He said: ‘[Perth] is one of the cleanest, tidiest cities I’ve ever been to. The sunrises and sunsets are just phenomenal. The crime rates are clearly lower, there’s no graffiti, no gangs of kids – it feels like a nice safe place to be.’

The pair were sworn in as constables of the Western Australia Police Force on Monday, giving their allegiance to King Charles III, in a ceremony with an aboriginal theme.

Mr Woods said: ‘An aboriginal lady came in and read scripture welcoming us, giving us strength and good spirits.’

Mr Woods, a 33-year-old sergeant from Sussex Police, added: 'My colleagues were naturally sad to see me go, but are now sick of my social media'

Peppermint leaves were lit to create aromatic smoke, and Ms Miller said: ‘The smoke and the ceremony was around wishing us well, good luck and keeping us safe. It was lovely.’

All police officers in Western Australia are armed, meaning most UK recruits will need firearms training.

Ms Miller said: ‘I don’t have a strong feeling. It’s just a piece of kit that officers have. I’ll learn how to use it.’

The police minster told the Mail: ‘We protect our officers. They’ve all got tasers, Glocks [pistols] and body armour.’

Mr Papalia said: ‘I’m intent on stealing your best people. Unashamedly. You guys have been taking our best for decades, it’s a rite of passage for Australians to go to the UK.

‘We’re aiming for 150 police officers this month, and 150 every year thereafter for five years. They come from a variety of forces. I’ve met all of them. They’re a good crowd.

‘They all love policing and had their expectations met when doing swearing in – the skies in Perth were magnificent clear blue skies. Everything they had hoped for.

‘Western Australia is a great place to live and work. Compared to the UK, we have higher wages, a lower cost of living and the perfect climate for year-round adventure.

‘The response has been extremely positive, meaning WA Police can handpick the best of the best.’

In a nod to the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ scheme introduced after the Second World War, Western Australia’s shameless ambition is to grab 31,000 British workers, with police joining doctors, nurses and construction workers.

They can ‘have it all’, with energy bills almost half in Australia, allowing the savings to be spent on 183 pints of beer, 110 roast dinners or 500 jars of Marmite, boasted Mr Papalia.

The British Medical Association revealed before Christmas that a third of junior doctors are planning to leave the UK – with the majority choosing Australia or New Zealand.

The NHS is battling shortfalls of 12,000 hospital doctors and more than 50,000 nurses and midwives.

An Australian delegation arrived in the UK on February 25 and held jobs fairs in London, Edinburgh and Bristol.

The scheme also targeted those in other professions hit by labour shortages including miners, plumbers, mechanics and builders.

Almost 25,000 applications to get documents needed to secure a job overseas were made to UK healthcare regulators in 2022. The vast majority represent NHS workers.

The toll, uncovered by a MailOnline investigation, dwarfs the 10,000 figure seen before Covid struck.

Senior leaders in the health service warned ‘the exodus is only just beginning’ and said the stats should ‘stun ministers into action’.

Disgruntled NHS medics say the pandemic has shone a light on how poorly they are valued in the UK, a factor that helped launched a wave of strike action across the UK to boost their pay.

Australia has also launched a wave of ‘cheeky’ tactics touting the merits of a move Down Under, such as deploying mobile billboards to NHS strike picket lines to recruit disenfranchised medics.

Yet some medics who’ve made the move Down Under have complained that it’s not exactly the dream some are selling.

British health staff wanting to apply for a job overseas need to get documents from their UK regulator as part of the application.

These prove to their potential employers they don’t have any marks on their record, their training is up to date, and they can be trusted with patients.

Figures obtained by MailOnline reveal nearly 7,000 doctors applied for documents to support an application to work abroad from the British medical regulator, the General Medical Council (GMC), in 2022.

This was up from 6,100 in 2019.

Separate figures for 2023, which only go up until May, suggest this year will see an even bigger exodus, with almost 3,500 applying for their documents so far.

For nurses and midwives, the figures are even starker.

Interest in life Down Under has peaked for nurses and midwives in the most recent financial year, with some 4,000 applications made

Nearly 16,000 similar applications were made in 2022/23 — compared to just under 5,500 in 2018, according to the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Pristine beaches and sunny weather appear to have convinced many to seek a job in Australia.

Australia topped the charts for total applications in both professional groups.

Nearly 9,000 doctors have applied to work Down Under in the last five years. A third of these were made in 2022/23.

And Australian efforts to lure medics Down Under appear to be paying off.

Data from the Australian Medical Council, the Aussie equivalent of the GMC, show almost 1,000 British medics signed up in 2021/22, the latest data available, up 16 per cent on the year before, and the biggest number of any nation.

This is equivalent to roughly half the UK medics who applied to work Down Under getting a job there.

For nurses and midwives, 11,000 applications were made to Australia since 2017/18.

But the number has accelerated in recent years, with 4,000 making an application in the last financial year alone.

Anthony Joshua would love to see Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo go head-to-head in a Misfits boxing match – and while declaring it to be a close contest, he’s backed the Portuguese star to emerge victorious.

The British heavyweight boxer, 33, is currently enjoying some time off after beating Robert Helenius via a seventh-round KO at the 02 Arena in London last month.

And the big football fan has said that he would love to see two icons of the team sport go head-to-head to continue their personal rivalry in the fighting arena.

In an interview posted on YouTube, Joshua was asked to name two non-boxers he’d love to see fight based on personalities alone, and responded with ‘Ronaldo versus Messi’, taking one of modern football’s fiercest rivalries into a new battleground.

When asked who wins, Joshua said ‘Ronaldo’, before adding: ‘I love Messi and Ronaldo. Messi’s got that vision though. I can imagine him bobbing and weaving, angles, but yeah, it’d be tough. They’re both as good as each other.’

Messi's 'vision' would make him a difficult opponent in a possible fighting match

Ronaldo and Messi have a long-standing rivalry in football which could cross to a new arena

Joshua refused to name a non-boxer that he would like to meet in the ring in a cross-over fight, saying ‘I got no beef with no one’.

When faced with the idea of facing the Portuguese icon was put to him, Joshua said: ‘Nah, I respect Ronaldo.’

The suggestion of a hypothetical fight between two other football rivals was floated as well – Romelu Lukaku versus Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

In response to that, Joshua said: ‘Yeah, they don’t like each other anyway, do they? That would be a bad boy fight too, to be fair.’

Lukaku has made a name for himself with Serie A side Inter Milan, and has joined Roma on loan from Chelsea for this season, while Ibrahimovic retired from football at the end of last season after a long career which saw him finish with AC Milan.

Joshua, a two-time world champion, is expected to face Deontay Wilder next in a mega-money bout in Saudi Arabia before the end of 2023.

Berkeley maintains expectations despite housing market weakness

Berkeley Group has upheld annual profit guidance despite the value of home reservations plummeting in recent months.

The blue-chip listed housebuilder anticipates earning at least £1.05billion in pre-tax profits for this year and the next, compared to £604million for the 12 months ending April 2023.

Berkeley told investors on Friday that weaker trading conditions had been offset slightly by a solid opening forward sales position, with more than 90 per cent of turnover for the 2024 financial year exchanged.

A London-listed special purpose acquisition company has moved closer to launching a vehicle designed to give investors access to the Lloyd’s of London insurance market.

Financial Acquisitions Corp said this morning it had established London Innovation Underwriters Limited (LIU), as part of a plan to deploy funds in the historic insurance market and build a reinsurance book with up to £1billion of capacity.

The SPAC intends to combine with LIU and raise a ‘significant sum’ of equity capital on the London Stock Exchange, the statement said, adding a further statement would be made once the combination was entered into.

Berkeley’s London office may be its trump card

Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown:

‘It looks like the recent interest rate hikes pushing up mortgage costs are causing a relative lack of urgency among new buyers as private sales reservations dropped 35 per cent.

‘Pricing’s remained resilient though, due to the constrained supply of new-build and second-hand homes, giving Berkeley the confidence to reiterate its guidance for £1.05billion of pre-tax profits across the coming two financial years, weighted slightly towards the current year. That represents declines of around 10 per cent in consecutive years.

‘In the meantime, Berkeley’s taking action to protect its financial resilience by carefully matching its supply with demand and completely stopping spending on new plots of land. That’s expected to keep net cash at £325million by the end of October, down around 20 per cent since April but should be enough to help cushion the impact of lower sales in the near term.

‘Looking bigger picture, Berkeley’s London focus offers something different to peers, and demand in the capital’s likely to remain more robust than other areas of the country.

‘Add to the mix that the UK housing market’s suffering from a fundamental supply shortage, and the long-term picture doesn’t look so bleak. But in the short term, there’s plenty of stormy clouds for Berkeley to weather.’

CMA backs aviation watchdog over Heathrow pricing row

Britain’s competition regulator has said it provisionally backs the Civil Avivation Authority in most of its decisions over how much Heathrow Airport can charge airlines over the 2024-2026 period, after both airlines and the airport launched appeals.

The Competitions and Markets Authority, the CMA, stepped in to review the CAA’s decision after the cut to charges it proposed for the next three years angered both sides.

Britain’s Heathrow said lower fees would hit investment, while the airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, said the cuts did not go far enough.

The CMA now has until 17 October to decide whether to allow or dismiss the appeals, it said in its statement on Friday.

;Overall we provisionally consider that the CAA was not wrong in most of the decisions that were appealed to us,’ the CMA said.

The White House has opened the door to an audacious plan to block sunlight from hitting the surface of the Earth in a bid to halt global warming

Despite some scientists warning the effort could have untold side effects from altering the chemical makeup of the atmosphere, President Joe Biden‘s administration have admitted they’re open to the idea, which has never been attempted before.

In a report released Friday by the White House, officials suggested limiting sunlight to rapidly cool the planet, a process known as solar radiation modification (SRM).

The administration added a note of skepticism to the report by noting that Congress ordered it, insisting it has not made any decision on ‘geoengineering’ policy.

President Biden has opened the door to an audacious 'geoengineering' plan

President Biden has opened the door to an audacious ‘geoengineering’ plan

The report noted several ways authorities could look to achieve SRM, all of which come with potentially devastating consequences if they backfire.

One method would be to significantly increase the amount of aerosols in the stratosphere, which would reflect the sun’s rays from the planet.

Other ideas floated included increasing cloud coverage over oceans, or reducing the amount of cirrus cloud formations, which reflect solar radiation back to the Earth.

The report noted that undertaking the mammoth task could have severe ramifications weather patterns and food supplies, which would in turn impact biodiversity, geopolitics, and health.

It also suggested that committing to the idea then backtracking and changing course could lead to abrupt warming as the suns rays suddenly heat the Earth once more.

While insisting that it was not definitively moving ahead with the plan, the Biden administration insisted in its report that the idea appeared promising.

It said a ‘program of research’ into the practice would ‘enable better-informed decisions about the potential risks and benefits’ of blocking the sun.

The White House added that exploring the idea would also allow a better understanding of ‘the foundational elements of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and adaptation.’

‘SRM offers the possibility of cooling the planet significantly on a timescale of a few years,’ the report claimed.

While noting the idea could have benefits, the White House maintained that it has made no firm decision over using the risky plan

While noting the idea could have benefits, the White House maintained that it has made no firm decision over using the risky plan

While some scientists feel the plan could be used as a last resort against climate change, others warn it could have catastrophic consequences on the atmosphere

While some scientists feel the plan could be used as a last resort against climate change, others warn it could have catastrophic consequences on the atmosphere

In a statement accompanying the report, the administration said ‘there are no plans underway to establish a comprehensive research program focused on solar radiation modification.’

Scientists have been split over the potential benefits of the risky plan, with some warning it could result in a catastrophic change in the earth’s atmosphere.

Others, however, claim it could be used as a last resort if fears over climate change are realized in the coming years and decades.

‘The fact that this report even exists is probably the most consequential component of this release,’ said Shuchi Talati, the executive director of the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering, to Politico

‘This report also signals that the U.S. government is supportive of well-governed research, including outdoor experimentation, which I think is quite significant.’

The Biden administration made climate policy one of its central policy platforms in recent years, inserting the issue into other sectors including infrastructure and transportation.

This marked a significant shift in policy from Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, who famously once described climate change as a hoax created by the Chinese.

In its report, the White House doubled down on its commitment to tackling climate issues.

‘Climate change is already having profound effects on the physical and natural world, and on human well-being, and these effects will only grow as greenhouse gas concentrations increase and warming continues,’ the report stated.

‘Understanding these impacts is crucial to enable informed decisions around a possible role for SRM in addressing human hardships associated with climate change.’

Nationwide backs Mail campaign on savings: Top five building societies support demands to stop tax grab

Nationwide has led a chorus of top building societies calling for the Government to spare hard-pressed savers from being dragged into paying a stealth tax.

Current rules mean any interest earned on savings over £1,000 – or £500 for those in the higher rate income tax bracket – is subject to tax.

But rising interest rates mean that many with only modest savings will end up doing so.

Nationwide, Britain’s biggest building society, which is run by Debbie Crosbie, together with Skipton, Coventry, Yorkshire and Leeds have all backed the Daily Mail campaign demanding a rethink from Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Together the top five building societies hold £311billion of savings deposits in Britain.

Tom Riley, director of retail products at Nationwide, said: ‘We are supportive of raising the tax-free threshold for savers, particularly at a time many households are struggling financially.’

Savers have been suffering for years with near-zero interest rates. Back in 2016, then-Chancellor George Osborne introduced the tax-free Personal Savings Allowance – with the £1,000 and £500 thresholds – saying those who have already paid tax on their salaries ‘shouldn’t have to pay a second time when they save it’.

Now rates are rising, which is good for savers. But it also means that what Osborne wanted to stop is happening, effectively penalising consumers for being thrifty.

It means that more than 6million people face paying interest on their savings. Maitham Mohsin, head of savings at Skipton Building Society, said: ‘It would be great to see the Government meeting us halfway in taking another look at the personal savings allowance limit.’

Back in 2016, a basic rate taxpayer could hold just under £70,000 – or about £35,000 for a higher rate taxpayer – without having to pay a penny of income tax.

But rates have risen sharply since then as the Bank of England has hiked its main benchmark rate from 0.1 per cent in December 2021 to 4.5 per cent, and markets expect this to climb further to 5.5 per cent by the end of the year.

Today a basic rate taxpayer would only need about £20,000 – or £10,000 for a higher rate payer – to be dragged into paying tax.

Matthew Carter, head of savings at Coventry Building Society, added: ‘Many savers who have worked hard to build up a decent savings balance could well see double taxation on both income and taxable savings, just at a time when their cost of living is rising fast as a result of inflation.’

Laura Suter, head of personal finance at AJ Bell, has described the frozen PSA thresholds as a ‘stealth tax on steroids’

Ceres Power, one of the biggest companies on AIM, leaps to the defence of the London Stock Exchange after series of departures

One of the biggest companies on AIM has leapt to the defence of the London Stock Exchange following a series of recent departures.

Ceres Power, which specialises in green energy technology, announced last week it was planning to move its listing to the LSE’s main market.

A series of companies including building materials group CRH and chip maker Arm have revealed plans to shift their listing to – or float in –New York, snubbing the City.

But Ceres Power’s chief executive Phil Caldwell said there would be a ‘danger of getting lost’ in the US market, which is already packed with tech firms.

He said London is still a ‘very attractive market’ for the Sussex-based company and that the Government could do more to keep innovative firms in the UK by offering more green investment schemes.

Caldwell added: ‘For me personally, it’s really important to be in the UK. It’s a natural progression for us to graduate from AIM to main, to give us more international exposure and attract a bigger pool of international investors.

Once Ceres Power – which has been listed on AIM since 2004 – joins the main market, it may be eligible to join the FTSE 250 in the autumn reshuffle of the major indexes.

The company, which has almost 600 employees, is already worth £567 million – bigger than the likes of Asos and CMC Markets.

‘Justin Fields is going to be in the MVP conversation this season’: Dan Orlovsky backs Bears’ breakout QB to light up the NFL in 2023 despite team having worst record last year

  • Chicago traded for WR DJ Moore to give Fields a true No. 1 wide receiving option
  • Fields broke out last year recording over 2,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing

Chicago Bears breakout quarterback Justin Fields is set to enter this year’s MVP conversation, according to ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky.

‘Just to remind everybody at home that the Chicago Bears had the No. 1 pick last year. They were terrible last year, the only reason they were actually in games was Justin Fields,’ said Orlovsky.

‘Fast forward to this year their general manager Ryan Poles has done a couple things. No. 1 this offensive line has gone from weakness to potential strength.

‘No. 2 DJ Moore, there’s finally some decent talent on the outside that he’s going to have the chance to throw to.

‘And then three the growth that he is going to have. Everyone continues to say ‘follow the Jalen Hurts model,’ for the style, no. Justin Fields season should look a lot like Josh Allen’s second season did that last half.’

The Bears traded for WR DJ Moore to give Fields a true No. 1 wide receiver in the passing game

‘ I remember everyone talking about I think his last 11 games of his second season he went for like 18 touchdowns and like three picks.

‘And you saw uh oh it’s starting to take off. That’s what this season should look like for from start to finish for Justin Fields.

‘I will say it again, he’s finally going to be in the MVP conversation this year because he has the right people around him to allow his talents to excel.’

As Orlovsky mentioned the Bears dedicated to this offseason to building up the offense around their young QB who broke out last season in a major way.

Aside from acquiring DJ Moore to give Fields a true No. 1 target in the passing game, something he did not possess previously, the Bears also added free agent pick up Nate Davis and first-round draft pick Darnell Wright, allowing Tevin Jenkins to move inside from tackle to guard.

Last season Fields threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and ran for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.

Allen’s second season saw him end the year with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions before his numbers skyrocketed to 37-10 in his third season.

If Fields can duplicate this type of progression it would see the Bears take a tremendous leap towards being one of the top teams in the NFC, along with sending Fields into the heart of the conversation awards.

In a project which marries the beauty of the female form with spectacular scenes from nature, an artist has created stunning UV images on women’s backs.

John Poppleton, from California, creates incredible works of art painted directly onto human skin using fluorescent shades of lilac, orange and green and then photographs them with stunning results.

His project, called Under Black Light, consists of ‘bodyscapes’ of spectacular natural phenomena such as African sunsets, tropical oceans during rainstorm, and mountain ranges under moonlight.

In more otherworldly, eerie designs the artist depicts cosmic scenes of stars, galaxies and shimmering auroras.

His gorgeous painterly scenes are photographed under black light to produce the seemingly glowing images.

John incorporates the curves and shapes of the models into his paintings, and in some the canvas is stretches beyond the back of the model onto the background behind.

The artist dabbled in photography as a hobby until several friends convinced him to photograph their weddings in 1993. He then became a professional portrait photographer as has flourished in the industry for more than 20 years.

It has always been John’s goal to create something original and different but fantasy portraits were never part of the plan. ‘I wasn’t looking for it, it found me’, he says.

‘Around 2003 Photoshop introduced a new tool called liquify and just to show what it could do I stretched a brides ears and turned her into an elf. (‘Lord of the Rings’ was in theatres about this time.) It turned out so nice I put a copy in my portfolio and it just evolved from there.

‘But things really took off when the owner of a faerie collectable store asked me to create 12 images for a calendar. That’s what gave me the biggest push.’

In 2010, while suffering from a sleepless night in a hotel room bed, John received his inspiration for using black light and he was off on what has become the biggest adventure of his career.

John has received numerous awards for his wedding and fantasy portraits through Wedding & Portrait Photographers International, and his work has been featured in many acclaimed photography books.

He now lives in the quiet little town of Wellsville in Northern Utah, with his wife Becky and their three children.
