A Ryanair passenger attacked staff and smashed furniture and a computer during a rampage at Palma airport after he missed his flight, it has emerged.

Video shows the topless man, who has not been named, throwing a bin at a wall before gesticulating furiously at Ryanair staff who were hiding behind a glass door.

The furious passenger was filmed shouting abuse at the panicked ground staff at 5.43am this morning after he missed his flight to Gran Canaria.

The aggressive man had stripped off his T-shirt in rage before he began throwing furniture towards the airport staff.

At one point, he picked up a computer and threw it against one of the walls before doing the same with a chair, printer and bin, reports Ultima Hora.

Moments earlier he had allegedly physically assaulted a Ryanair staff member.

The panicked Ryanair staff called for help and six security guards arrived at the chaotic scene to find the man still throwing objects at walls and shouting abuse.

Broken pieces of furniture were seen strewn across the floor of the boarding gate.

The man is said to have then entered the women’s bathroom, where he broke the mirror and threatened to kill himself.

The man reportedly cut himself on his chest and abdomen before the security guards managed to restrain him until the Spanish Guardia Civil officers arrived.

The officers took the man for treatment at a hospital before he was detained at a police station.

President Joe Biden fluffed his lines on Friday as he delivered a speech on an improving jobs market, accidentally saying that unemployment had been below 14 percent for more than a year.

In fact, he meant that it had been below four percent.

The 80-year-old made his blunder in the Rose Garden, during a speech to mark how his policies had helped Americans get back to work after pandemic lockdowns.

‘When I took office, the unemployment rate was 6.3 percent,’ he said, wearing Aviator sunglasses against the September sunshine.

‘The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted that it would not get below four percent until the end of 2025.

‘Now, the unemployment rate has been below 14% for the last 19 months, the longest stretch in over 50 years. We recovered all the jobs lost during the pandemic.’

And the economy has added a million new jobs, he said.

He spoke soon after publication of the July jobs report. It concluded that the national unemployment rate had ticked up slightly to 3.8 percent as some of the heat left the jobs market.

Biden said it came off the back of a period of historic job growth.

‘It wasn’t that long ago that America was losing jobs,’ he said. ‘In fact, my predecessor was one of only two presidents in history, who entered his presidency and left with fewer jobs than when he entered.

‘Look at where we are right now. Just this morning, we learned that the economy created 190,000 jobs last month. All told we’ve added 13.5 million jobs since I took office.’

That may be true. But President Donald Trump’s time in office started with jobs growth and ended with massive economic shutdown, sending people home as COVID-19 gripped the country.

Earlier the monthly jobs report showed how an overheated job market was returning to room temperature.

The jobless rate rose to 3.8 percent in August, up from 3.5 percent in July and the highest since February 2022, the Labor Department said in its employment situation report on Friday.

Employers added 187,000 new jobs last month, more than economists had expected, and up from 157,000 in July, a figure that was revised downward by 30,000.

But the rising unemployment rate suggests that job seekers are spending more time between positions, as the number of openings drops from the dizzying levels seen last year, when companies were desperate for labor.

‘We are beginning to see this slow glide into a cooler labor market,’ said Becky Frankiewicz, chief commercial officer at the employment firm ManpowerGroup. ‘Make no mistake: Demand is cooling off. … But it’s not a freefall.’

The labor force participation rate, which had been flat since March, increased to 62.8 percent, finally reaching a level in line with figures recorded before the pandemic.

The number of ‘new entrants’ among the unemployed, referring to people with no prior work experience, edged up as well, suggesting that first-time job seekers are spending longer on their job hunts.

Signs of a cooling labor market should be welcome by the Federal Reserve, which has been trying to tame inflation with a series of aggressive interest rate hikes.

The central bank wants to see hiring decelerate, because strong demand for workers tends to fuel rapid wage increases and feed inflation.

The new data showed that average hourly earnings in August rose 0.2 percent, slower than the month before, to $33.82. Average hourly earnings are up 4.3 percent from a year ago.

People who feel safe from crime in their communities are less likely to die from heart attacks, a new study suggests.

Researchers wanted to see whether living in neighbourhoods with certain characteristics could have an impact on death rates and the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Academics examined data on almost 36,000 adults from China aged 35 to 70.

People filled out questionnaires about the environment in their neighbourhood, including information on how safe they felt from crime; community satisfaction; the aesthetics of their neighbourhoods including trees, litter and pavements; ease of access to shops and other factors.

Academics also looked at the medical records of people involved with the study.

After an average of almost 12 years there were just over 2,000 deaths, including 765 deaths from cardiovascular disease.

There were also 3,000 ‘cardiovascular disease events’ – which includes incidents of heart attacks and strokes.

They found that people who reported living in areas where they felt safe from crime were 9% less likely to die during the follow-up period.

And they were 10% less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases, according to a paper, which has been presented at the ESC Congress in Amsterdam.

A higher neighbourhood environment score was associated with a 6% lower risk of heart attacks and strokes, they said.

‘There is increasing evidence that the neighbourhood we live in affects our health,’ study author Dr Mengya Li, of the National Centre for Cardiovascular Diseases in Beijing, said.

‘This study highlights the importance of many aspects of our surroundings for heart health and longevity, including feeling safe, having shops, transport and parks close by, cleanliness, and feeling that our neighbourhood is a good place to live and to raise children.’

A hero uncle fought a jaguar with his bare hands to save his two teenage nephews when the predator attacked them during a camping trip in Brazil.

Erivaldo Moriman had gone on an early morning walk on the banks of a Jureana river in central Brazil – but when he came back to where his family were camping he was horrified to find the jaguar attacking his nephews, who are aged 15 and 18.

Powered by sheer adrenaline and gut instinct, Moriman bravely shouted and waved his arms at the fierce predator in an effort to distract it and save the lives of the two youngsters in Salto do Augusto on 13 August.

The jaguar quickly turned its attention to Moriman and charged at the uncle before sinking her claws into his body and tackling him to the ground.

In a manic bid to survive, Moriman grabbed onto the jaguar’s leg before it bit his head, leaving the indigenous man with a huge gash and blood pouring down his face.

But Moriman somehow survived the vicious mauling and managed to fight off the jaguar with his bare hands in a life-or-death struggle.

Speaking of his fight for survival, Moriman told local media: ‘She dropped the boys and came at me.

‘I shouted to the boys that the jaguar was going to get me and when they looked up it had already got me.

‘I held onto her leg behind a tree trunk and kept holding on. I foolishly tried to run, and as I tried to run, she attacked again, and that’s when she got me.

‘She didn’t just scratch me; she actually bit me on the head.’

Despite being terrified, Moriman, powered by adrenaline, fought back.

He said: ‘It was very hard for us to witness this, to experience this, to embrace a jaguar. Nobody believes it, but it was true.’

After the attack, Moriman wasn’t able to be instantly rescued. Instead he had to travel for nearly two hours by boat to reach the airstrip of a private lodge, all while grimacing from the pain of his injuries.

He received first aid from a doctor who had happened to be staying there before being taken to the Albert Sabin Regional Hospital in Alta Floresta more than three hours away.

Despite his injuries, Moriman was discharged the following night on 14 August.

Around 50 per cent of the world’s jaguars can be found in Brazil as they are most suited to habitats close to lakes, rivers and inland wetlands.

Shocking moment angry driver attacks traffic warden with wooden pole as the pair brawl on the street in east London after officer took photos of the man’s van

  • The fight, caught on film in London, left the traffic warden with a broken finger

This is the shocking moment a traffic warden and furious driver went toe-to-toe in a daylight brawl.

The fight broke out on a road in Manor Park, east London, last week. The clip, filmed by a passerby, starts with the warden taking photos of a man’s van.

The enraged driver, who is dressed in hi-vis, grabs a wooden pole and starts attacking the officer, smacking him twice before the stick snaps.

‘Come on you pussy mother f*****,’ rages one of the men as the brawl spills out across the road, with the traffic warden punching the man to the floor before the fight is broken up by a third man.

Police said the warden suffered a broken finger and the other man was arrested. The matter has since been resolved using a community resolution.

The witness who shot the video, but asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘To be honest it didn’t really faze me, as you see so much crime around that area.

‘I didn’t think the man was going to get a piece of wood though. I was just glad it didn’t get out of hand.’

The witness said he was stuck on the street for around 10 minutes watching the brawl.

He added: ‘I was just driving down the street but they were blocking the road so I couldn’t get through. I was driving to see my mate but couldn’t get through. There were a lot of people around watching.’

The Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called at 12.34pm on Wednesday, 16 August to reports of an altercation between two men at Chesterford Road, E12.

‘Officers attended. At the scene a 38-year-old man, a traffic warden, has suffered an injury to his finger. His injury did not require medical treatment.

‘The victim’s earphones were also broken in the assault. A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and causing actual bodily harm.

‘However, after speaking with the victim and the suspect, officers were able to resolve the incident by way of a Community Resolution.

‘The victim agreed to accept payment from the suspect to replace the damaged earphones. The assault allegation was not proceeded with.’

A Newham Council spokesperson said: ‘We are pleased the police have taken immediate action to deal with this man, who attacked one of our staff as he was carrying out his duties.

‘The prompt arrest underlines our own clear message of Newham’s zero tolerance policy to abuse and violence aimed at staff. We will always stand by employees in pursuit of justice if they are victimised.’

Sweden is at a ‘heightened threat’ of terror attacks after recent Koran burnings in the country sparked widespread protests in the Muslim world, its domestic security service said on Wednesday.

The agency, known by its acronym SAPO, said the burning and desecration of religious books in Sweden, and ongoing disinformation campaigns on social media and elsewhere, have negatively affected the country’s reputation.

A recent string of public desecrations of the Koran by a handful of anti-Islam activists in Sweden and most recently in neighbouring Denmark has triggered anger in many Muslim countries, and among Muslim communities residing in the Nordic nations.

There is no law in Sweden specifically prohibiting the burning or desecration of the Koran or other religious texts.

The image of Sweden has changed ‘from a tolerant country to a country hostile to Islam and Muslims, where attacks on Muslims are sanctioned by the state and where Muslim children can be kidnapped by social services,’ SAPO said in a statement.

This risks fuelling threats against Sweden ‘from individuals within the violent Islamist milieu’, the agency said, adding that the current risk of terrorism in Sweden remains at an elevated level, at three on a five-point scale.

‘It’s a serious situation that we’re in,’ Susanna Trehorning, SAPO’s deputy head of counter-terrorism, told Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

‘It’s a heightened threat and an attack can occur within the framework of a heightened threat.’

Like many Western countries, Sweden does not have any blasphemy laws.

The right to hold public demonstrations is strong in Sweden and protected by the constitution. Blasphemy laws were abandoned in the 1970s.

Police generally give permission for public gatherings based on whether they believe an event can be held without major disruptions or risks to public safety.

Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said on Wednesday that the Koran desecrations have made Sweden a target of malicious influencing campaigns ‘by states and state-like actors with the aim of damaging Swedish interests and ultimately Swedish citizens’.

He debunked claims that the Swedish government grants permission for people to burn Islam’s sacred text or other religious books, something that ‘is factually incorrect’.

‘No state permits are issued for burning,’ he told reporters at a news conference.

‘The state guarantees the right to freedom of expression but does not sanction political messages. Sweden has no tradition of burning holy scriptures.

‘On the contrary. Sweden is a secular country where religious freedom is a cornerstone and where there is respect for different beliefs.’

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, in a statement on Wednesday, condemned the religious book desecrations in Sweden and Denmark, saying the acts ‘by individual provocateurs only benefit those who want to divide us and our societies’.

‘Respect for diversity is a core value of the European Union. This includes respect for other religious communities,’ the EU’s top diplomat said.

‘The desecration of the Koran, or of any other book considered holy, is offensive, disrespectful and a clear provocation.

Expressions of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance have no place in the European Union.’

The head of Russia‘s Wagner mercenary group has unleashed an explosive tirade of abuse at Vladimir Putin‘s cronies after Moscow was attacked this morning by suspected Ukrainian kamikaze drones.

In a furious 70-second rant, a ruthless Yevgeny Prigozhin screamed vulgar insults at Russia’s defence whom he described as ‘smelly scumbags’ and ‘b*******’.

The Wagner boss said he was ‘deeply outraged’ by Putin’s troops doing ‘f*** all’ to prevent explosive drones raining down on the Russian capital this morning. Shortly after, Putin claimed that Moscow’s air defence system worked ‘satisfactorily’.

Known for his foul-mouthed rants, Prigozhin, who handed Bakhmut over to Russia’s army last week, was translated as shouting: ‘Smelly scumbags! What are you doing? Get your a**** up from the offices you’ve been put in to protect this country.

‘You are the Ministry of Defence. You’ve done f*** all in order to advance.  Why the f*** are you allowing these drones to fly to Moscow? Who gives a s*** that they are flying to your homes on Rublyovka! Let your houses burn.

‘And what should ordinary people do when drones with explosives crash into their windows? So as a citizen, I am deeply outraged that these scum sit quietly with their fat a**** smeared with expensive creams.

‘And that’s why I think the people have every right to ask them these questions, these b*******.

‘But I have already warned about this many times, but no one wants to listen. Because I’m angry and I upset bureaucrats who have a great life.’

His astonishing meltdown comes after several buildings in the wealthy suburbs of Moscow were damaged by suspected Ukrainian kamikaze drones, just hours after Putin unleashed yet another volley of strikes on Kyiv.

Workers were pictured fixing damaged buildings, while smoke billowed across the Russian capital in the background.

A deluded Putin and his cronies today accused Ukraine of trying to ‘frighten’ Russians with their ‘increasingly reckless behaviour’ after Moscow came under fire.

Seemingly forgetting that Russia has unleashed a series of deadly airstrikes on Ukrainian cities that have killed thousands in the past 15 months, Putin claimed Kyiv had chosen the ‘path of trying to frighten the citizens of Russia’.

The ranting Russian despot admitted there was ‘some work to do’ on Moscow’s air defence system in a sign of his growing frustration with Russia’s defences.

‘Moscow’s air defence system worked normally, satisfactorily, although there is some work to do,’ Putin said on Russian television.

Who is Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin?

Nicknamed ‘Putin’s chef’ due to owning a number of restaurants and catering firms that supply the Kremlin, Yevgeny Prigozhin is the oligarch founder of the notorious Wagner Group.

Prigozhin was born in the Soviet Union on June 1 1961, before spending a period of time in jail for numerous crimes including fraud and robbery, during his teens.

After spending 9 years in prison, Prigozhin launched a number of businesses following the collapse of the Soviet Union, including grocery and gambling firms.

In 2014, Prigozhin founded Wagner Group during Russia’s first invasion of Ukraine. The mercenary group has since become notorious for doing the Russian military’s dirty work, leaving behind trails of brutal violence, rape and war crimes.

Prigozhin long denied any affiliation with the group until September 2022, when he admitted to founding the mercenary force.

He is often seen on the frontlines of the conflict with Ukraine, criticising Russian military leadership and accusing them of starving Wagner troops of supplies.

Air defences around Moscow – which as the capital of the world’s biggest nuclear power is already protected by an extensive early warning system – would be strengthened as a result, Putin said.

A Ukrainian presidential aide denied Kyiv was directly involved in the Moscow attack, but said Ukraine was enjoying watching events and forecast more to come.

‘Of course we are pleased to watch and predict an increase in the number of attacks. But of course we have nothing directly to do with this,’ Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said.

One kamikaze drone exploded into a mushroom cloud near the village of Usovo, which is just down the road from Putin’s official Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside of the capital.

‘[Putin’s residence] would be in earshot of the explosion,’ one local said.

In the city, explosive drones struck blocks of flats in Leninsky Prospekt and Profsoyuznaya Street about six miles from the centre of Moscow, reportedly wounding several residents and damaging the buildings.

Ukraine made no immediate comment on the attack, which would be one of its deepest and most daring strikes into Russia since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than 15 months ago.

It is the second time Moscow has come under attack this month after the Kremlin  came under a kamikaze drone attack – a move which Russia described as an ‘assassination attempt’ on their leader.

Moscow has largely remained undisturbed since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine last February, although around 220,000 Russian troops have been killed in the war.

Vladimir Putin launched an attack on Ternopil in Ukraine just before the city’s most famous residents Tvorchi performed at the Eurovision song contest.

Warehouses were targeted by Russian missile strikes and two people were injured, Ternopil Oblast Governor Volodymyr Trush confirmed.

It is reported that the warehouses that were hit and caught fire belonged to commercial enterprises and a religious organization.

Ten minutes before performing inside the Liverpool Arena, Tvorchi posted on Instagram citing reports of Ternopil in western Ukraine being attacked.

After performing, Tvorchi posted again saying: ‘Ternopil is the name of our hometown, which was bombed by Russia while we sang on the Eurovision stage about our steel hearts, indomitability and will.

‘This is a message for all cities of Ukraine that are shelled every day. Kharkiv, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Uman, Sumy, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Kherson and all others.

‘Europe, unite against evil for the sake of peace!’

Eurovision commentator Timur Miroshnichenko said: ‘Well done, boys! For Ternopil, which is being bombed now, for Mariupol, which was bombed a year ago. For all the cities and people of our country!’

Doctors could soon use AI to diagnose HEART ATTACKS: Algorithm can rule out cardiac incidents with 99.6% accuracy

  • Scientists have developed an algorithm which could reduce pressure on A&E
  • It rules out a heart attack in more than double the patient than current methods

Heart attacks could soon be diagnosed with better speed and accuracy than ever before thanks to a new AI tool.

Researchers have developed an algorithm which they say could reduce pressure on A&E and reassure patients suffering from chest pain.

A new study suggests that compared to current testing methods, their algorithm was able to rule out a heart attack in more than double the number of patients with an accuracy of 99.6 per cent.

The team, from the University of Edinburgh, said this ability to quickly rule out a heart attack could greatly reduce hospital admissions and rapidly identify patients that are safe to go home.

The current gold standard for diagnosing a heart attack involves measuring levels of the protein troponin in the blood.

WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK?

Figures suggest there are 200,000 hospital visits because of heart attacks in the UK each year, while there are around 800,000 annually in the US.

A heart attack, known medically as a myocardial infarction, occurs when the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked.

Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, and feeling weak and anxious.

Heart attacks are commonly caused by coronary heart disease, which can be brought on by smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Treatment is usually medication to dissolve blots clots or surgery to remove the blockage.

Reduce your risk by not smoking, exercising regularly and drinking in moderation.

Heart attacks are different to a cardiac arrest, which occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood around the body, usually due to a problem with electrical signals in the organ.

But the same threshold is used for every patient, meaning factors such as age, sex and other health problems which affect troponin levels are not considered – affecting how accurate heart attack diagnoses are.

Previous research has shown that women are 50 per cent more likely to get a wrong initial diagnosis, and people who are misdiagnosed have a 70 per cent higher risk of dying after 30 days.

The team said their new algorithm, called CoDE-ACS, is an opportunity to prevent this.

It was developed using data from 10,038 patients in Scotland who had arrived at hospital with a suspected heart attack.

It uses routinely-collected patient information, such as age, sex, ECG findings and medical history, as well as troponin levels, to predict the probability that an individual has had a heart attack.

The result is presented as a probability score from 0 to 100 for each patient.

Professor Nicholas Mills, who led the research, said: ‘For patients with acute chest pain due to a heart attack, early diagnosis and treatment saves lives.

‘Unfortunately, many conditions cause these common symptoms, and the diagnosis is not always straightforward.

‘Harnessing data and artificial intelligence to support clinical decisions has enormous potential to improve care for patients and efficiency in our busy Emergency Departments.’

Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation, who funded the research, said: ‘Chest pain is one of the most common reasons that people present to Emergency Departments.

‘Every day, doctors around the world face the challenge of separating patients whose pain is due to a heart attack from those whose pain is due to something less serious.

‘CoDE-ACS, developed using cutting edge data science and AI, has the potential to rule-in or rule-out a heart attack more accurately than current approaches.

‘It could be transformational for Emergency Departments, shortening the time needed to make a diagnosis, and much better for patients.’

Figures show there are around 100,000 hospital admissions each year in the UK due to heart attacks – the equivalent of one every five minutes.

Clinical trials are now underway in Scotland to assess whether the AI tool can help doctors reduce pressure on overcrowded emergency departments.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine.

WHY DOES THE HEART NOT GET TIRED?

In a person’s lifetime, a human heart can contract billions of times.

The heart is still a muscle, much like the bicep or the hamstring, but the heart never tires.

The reason for this rather crucial detail of anatomy keeps us alive, as without a pumping heart death will shortly follow.

Hearts, although muscles, are made up of different fibres than their counterparts.

This type of fibre, known as cardiac tissue, only exists in the heart and nowhere else in the human body.

Skeletal muscle tires quickly, and can switch from aerobic respiration to anaerobic respiration – producing lactic acid which causes cramp.

If this was to happen in the heart it would cause a heart attack.

To avoid this happening and to allow for constant use without fatigue, the cardiac tissue has a different arrangement.

Cardiac tissue has far more mitochondria which produces a huge amount more energy in the form of a chemical called Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).

Mitochondria are small organelles within cells which are considered to be the powerhouse of the cell and convert glucose into energy inside the organelle.

Having more of these means the heart as an organ will never run out of energy under normal circumstances.

The reason this arrangement does not occur in all muscle sis the energy requirements would be enormous, and unsustainable.

The human body would simply demand more energy than it can create.
