Left-wing comedian Hannah Gadsby is roasted by art critics for cringeworthy NYC gallery exhibit seeking to cancel ‘problematic’ Pablo Picasso 50 years after his death: ‘Don’t go’

Australian feminist comedian Hannah Gadsby has been roasted by art critics after launching her It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City.

The art show features more than 100 works including pieces by Picasso and by modern female artists, as well as audio descriptions by Gadsby herself.

An official press release says the exhibition ‘reckons with complex questions around misogyny, creativity, the art-historical canon, and ‘genius”.

Meanwhile, a promo video shows Gadsby strolling through the museum as she refers to Picasso as a ‘misogynist’ whose life needs to be viewed through the fresh lens of feminism.

However, the exhibition has left many attendees unimpressed, with New York Times critic Jason Farago writing: ‘The ambitions here are at GIF level, though perhaps that is the point.’

Farago also criticised the variety of artists displayed, adding: ‘The female artists featured do not include female Cubists, women inspired by Picasso, or the female artists Picasso was actually involved with in his life.’

Meanwhile, Adlan Jackson’s review for Hell Gate was bluntly headlined: ‘Don’t Go to It’s Pablo-matic.’

ARTnews‘ Alex Greenberger also pointed out the artworks ‘have almost nothing in common, beside the fact that they are all owned by the Brooklyn Museum.’

Writer Sophia Benoit Tweeted: ‘So so so happy that Hannah Gadsby made the Pablo-matic (lmfao) exhibit because the reviews of it have been the best, most fun culture writing in a while imo!!!!!’

Other critics noted the exhibit labels written by Gadsby read more like tweets, and offered little in the way of actual insights into the artworks.

Gadsby’s art show was inspired by her 2018 Netflix comedy special Nanette, in which she slammed Picasso and his impact on modern art.

In the stand-up routine she joked that the artist had launched Cubism by putting a ‘kaleidoscope filter’ on his penis.

It comes after it was revealed Gadsby slammed comedy legend Barry Humphries, five years before his death.

In a resurfaced Tweet from 2018, Gadsby labelled Humphries as ‘irrelevant and inhumane’ as she criticised his comedy act.

‘Barry Humphries loves those who hold power, hates vulnerable minorities and has completely lost the ability to read the room,’ she wrote.

‘That’s not a comedian, that’s an irrelevant, inhumane d**k biscuit of the highest order.’

Following news of Humphries’ death in April, media insider Peter Ford reposted the historic Tweet and hit back: ‘Comedy is subjective. We don’t all find the same things funny.’

‘Hannah is entitled to her opinion. However my view is that I understand Hannah identifies as being funny but Barry actually WAS funny. I hope she feels proud the charge she lead against a then 84 year old man.’

Channing Tatum took some time out of his busy schedule to work on a fun art project with some kids in Brooklyn this week.

The dad of Everly, 10, with ex-wife Jenna Dewan, 42, is promoting his third children’s book – The One And Only Sparkella And The Big Lie.

The Magic Mike star read from his book at the Books Are Magic store and then helped the kids paint a colorful mural.

The Lost City actor, 43, wore a navy blue, long-sleeved jumpsuit.

The Step Up star recently revealed the inspiration behind his new book

‘We really had to figure out which direction we wanted to go,’ he said about figuring out the story.

He released The One and Only Sparkella in 2021 and The One and Only Sparkella Makes a Plan in 2022.

‘And if you have kids, you know that they’re going through massive life learning lessons on a daily basis, at a rapid pace. So trying to pick one and solidify it is not the easiest of jobs.’

And it was a real-life incident with Everly that ultimately gave Channing the idea for his latest book.

As a father, the Magic Mike star learned that kids begin experimenting with lying around age five.

‘They really start to experiment with lying and really telling these untruths to see how they make them feel,’ he said. ‘They’re starting to use them as tools in a way.’

He went on to tell a story about a time his daughter took a toy car home from school. The Step Up actor said he could tell it was ‘eating her up.’

‘She calls me in. And she would always hustle me to not go to bed when I’m telling her to. I was like, “Ev, what’s going on?” She’s like, “You’re just going to be so mad at me. I just can’t tell you.” And I’m like, “Evie, just tell me. I’m not going to be mad. I promise. We’ll handle whatever it is. It’s okay.”‘

Everly eventually admitted what she had done. ‘And it was a big relief. She definitely had to go and return it and apologize. But that was the worst of it,’ Tatum explained.

‘I think it was a big lesson for her. It was that first one. That first big, big one that you feel like your world’s going to end.’

In The One and Only Sparkella and the Big Lie, Sparkella attempts to befriend the cool kid at school by taking another friend’s toy to impress them.

‘I usually always kind of connect it to something that I went through with Evie that I can understand at least the emotional journey of it,’ Tatum said.

Art collector buys £8,000 painting – and X-ray shows a £50,000 picture underneath

A collector who bought a portrait by a celebrated British artist has uncovered a £50,000 masterpiece – after an X-ray revealed another picture hidden underneath.

The art lover bought the original piece – a self-portrait by Robert Lenkiewicz depicting the artist in a nude pose with a female model – at auction for £8,500.

But after advice from an expert the unnamed owner took the oil painting to Torbay Hospital in Torquay, Devon to have it X-rayed. He was stunned to see that underneath the naked couple was the portrait of a tramp – worth an estimated £50,000.

Artist Robert Lenkiewicz and Edwin McKenzie

The owner of the double portrait, who bought it in a collective auction of Lenkiewicz’s work in 2003, believes the artist must have painted over it for some reason.

He said: ‘When the experts looked at it they reckoned it contained another picture underneath.

‘So I took it to Torbay Hospital and discovered the tramp, which could be worth more than what is painted over it.

‘The picture I bought at auction could soon be valued at more than £50,000. It is a private work and perhaps should never have gone under the hammer at the estate’s sale in 2003.’

Lenkiewicz, of Plymouth, Devon, died of a heart attack aged 60 in 2002 and left behind no cash but a collection of art worth an estimated £2million.

He was famous for his works with the homeless and after he died the embalmed body of a 72-year-old tramp was found stuffed in a drawer in his studio.

The tramp – Edwin McKenzie, known as Diogenes – was a close friend of the artist and his whereabouts since his death in the 1980s had been a mystery. It was believed the dying wish of Mr McKenzie, who had no known family, was that his friend should embalm his body as a ‘work of art’.

The pair first met when the tramp was living in a concrete barrel at a rubbish tip near his studio and the artist embalmed him in 1984.

Officials at Plymouth City Council later tried to seize the corpse but couldn’t find the it until it was discovered hidden following Lenkiewicz’s death.

It is technically possible to remove the top painting to reveal the tramp materpiece underneath, but the price tag would not be justified on a £50,000 painting.

Art dealer Adrian Phippen, a Lenkiewicz expert, said the double portrait was ‘a very important piece of work’ by the artist.

‘Works like this one will become more valuable and highly prized by collectors than the self portraits with women that he painted.

‘To remove the top painting would be expensive but whoever buys it will have a unique piece by a leading British artist.’

A spokesman for South Devon Healthcare Trust added: ‘On rare occasions the hospital’s radiology team will be asked to X-ray an object.

‘We will always try to aid people. In this particular case the trust was happy to help and staff gave up their own time outside clinical hours to carry out the unusual request. They will be pleased to know that they have been part of such a remarkable finding.

‘We would like to offer our congratulations to the owner of the painting, who must be delighted with the discovery. Where the trust had been able to assist, a donation to the trust fund is usually made.’

The owner of the portrait, who lives in London and Ashburton in Devon, now plans to sell it at the Driftwood Gallery in Padstow, Cornwall.

He said: ‘I think the image there now is very good and rare. And it would be expensive to restore it to get to the tramp.’

The popularity of Lenkiewicz’s work has increased since his death and the current world record for one of his pictures stands at £57,600 for a self-portrait in 2005.

His work was virtually ignored by the art establishment during his lifetime, but now experts are comparing his colourful bohemian style with Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.

Many of his paintings depict characters from around his home including skinheads, punks, criminals, fishermen, and the many women in his life.

Lenkiewicz learnt to paint with brushes made from his own hair and was married and divorced three times, leaving 11 children by various women.

An artist has taken camouflage to the next level with her incredible body illustrations that see her models blend into beautiful murals.

Emma Hack, famed for her work on Gotye’s music video, paints the skin of nude bodies and has amassed over 500 million Youtube hits with her mesmerizing work on the famous music video.

Now the Australian artist will take her work to an exciting new level as she prepares to paint a model live for the first time in a UK gallery.

The 41-year-old will spend up to 15-hours illustrating the nude’s skin to make her blend into the background of an artwork.

The exhibition that will be shown at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London is made up of Emma’s latest collections.

The collection, entitle Blossom, features four wallpaper artworks by the later interior designer Florence Broadhurst that Emma uses as a backdrop for her models.

Emma who will be creating the live installation at the gallery on the preview day  says that she is not nervous to be doing her work in front of an audience but she is worried about becoming distracted.

‘I don’t find it daunting, but it is exhausting and time-consuming, also chatting to viewers distracts me so I do plan to create as much as possible prior to the public viewing.’

For Emma the process of creating her work can be a lengthily one as she says she has many things to consider when coming up with the design.

‘Generally I research the idea and look at photos I have taken from my travels. I consider what I want the viewer to feel, how the flow of composition appears for the viewer.

‘I then either paint a background or choose some wallpaper from an archive, before heading into the studio with my model, slowly painting her outer edges, then filling in the detail on centre of the form.’

In an exciting twist several pieces called Birds of a Feather feature live birds that are held by the naked models, who wear nothing more than a glove to protect their hands.

Emma says that having live animals in the piece can add complications so she doesn’t involve them until completion.

‘If there is a bird in the work, they arrive towards the end of the process and are positioned. I then photograph the results.’

Although Emma seems completely at ease with the nudes that she works with she admits that she wasn’t always so comfortable with the naked body.

‘In the beginning I found the nude models daunting as I have always been quite shy about my own body.

‘I think this is why I was trusted by my first models as I always make sure they are comfortable with what I am doing.’

Despite each piece taking between eight and 15 hours to complete Emma is not yet jaded by the process and says that working with animals makes her job entirely unpredictable.

‘You never know what to expect working with birds and animals. The owl is very cute, but also very naughty and it is hard getting him to look at me.

‘We tend to throw things on the ground or play phone sounds to make noise to get his attention.

‘It’s very hard for the model to hold a straight face while this is happening and quite often they get the giggles.’

The exhibition will be on show Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery in London from June 25 until August 2.
