For property hunters with limited cash to splash, a quirky houseboat in New York has hit the market for just $250,000. 

The floating one-bedroom abode – which is also on Airbnb at a rate of $149 per night – is currently docked at a marina close to Rockaway Beach in Queens and around an hour’s drive to Manhattan.

Photos of the unique structure reveal its eclectic interiors, with everything from fishing rods to surfboards attached to the ceilings, and a hoard of other maritime-themed objects can be seen on display.

Alternatively, it could be seen as an investment ‘for a very profitable Airbnb rental.’

The property currently has a 4.68 rating out of 5 on Airbnb.

One traveler who stayed there in July wrote: ‘We had a lovely time on the houseboat! 

‘It was very charming, sun soaked, and comfortable to spend time on. It’s a short walk / drive to a great surf spot as well.’

Another fan added: ‘The James Franco is absolutely magical!

When it comes to local attractions, the boat is two blocks away from a train station and it is ‘close to surf breaks, shops and restaurants.’

Holidaymakers often assume that Airbnbs and Vrbo rentals are cheaper than hotels – but that’s generally not the case, Which? has found.

The watchdog compared the cost of thousands of hotels – excluding five-star hotels – with 300,000 one-bed listings on Airbnb and Vrbo around the world, from San Francisco to Southwold, and found the price for rentals outstripped the average cost of a hotel in 38 of 50 destinations. 

Private rentals are almost a fifth (19 per cent) more expensive on average – £120 ($148) a night compared to £101 ($125) for hotel rooms.

In some destinations, holidaymakers could be spending an extra £80 per night by choosing to stay in a private rental over a hotel, the consumer champion reveals. This could set travellers back hundreds of pounds more for a rental over a week-long stay, even before accounting for Airbnb and Vrbo’s service charges, which were not included in the watchdog’s price analysis.

The biggest price difference could be found in Santorini, where a one-bed rental on Airbnb and Vrbo is £203 a night on average, 71 per cent (£84) more than a hotel stay (£119). Over the course of a week, the savings for hotel guests could be substantial, with holidaymakers cutting their costs by as much as £588 on average, Which? notes.

In the Portuguese town of Almancil, meanwhile, travellers could save as much as £81 per night by choosing a hotel (£63) over a private rental (£144) – making it the second-biggest price gap in the study.

The third biggest saving to be had is in the picturesque seaside town of Southwold in Suffolk, which draws thousands of visitors every year. 

At an average of £155, the cost of a hotel room in Southwold is among the priciest the consumer champion found in the UK. However, this is still significantly cheaper than the average cost of a listing on Vrbo or Airbnb in the town, which sits at a hefty £223 per night, an increase of 44 per cent (£68). Over the course of a week-long stay, holidaymakers could stand to save as much as £476 by opting to stay in a hotel.

The fourth biggest price gap is in Amsterdam, where one-bed Airbnb and Vrbo listings are 58 per cent more expensive per night on average at £183, compared with £116 a night for a hotel. That means travellers could pay as much as £496 more on average over a seven-night stay (£67 per night).

In the U.S, the biggest price gap is in San Francisco, where hotels are £53 ($65) per night and private rentals are £163 ($202) – making a hotel stay £36 ($44) cheaper.

And the most significant discrepancy in Australia is in Sydney. There, private rentals are priced at £121 per night, whereas a hotel stay is £87 – a saving of £34.

Hotels work out cheaper on average in all four of the UK’s capital cities. In Greater London, an Airbnb or Vrbo stay costs almost 59 per cent more (£60 per night) at £162, than the average hotel stay (£102).

In the U.S, the biggest price gap is in San Francisco, where hotels are £53 ($65) per night and private rentals are £163 ($202) – making a hotel stay £36 ($44) cheaper

In Edinburgh, meanwhile, holidaymakers could save £22 per night, with the average cost of a hotel stay coming to £104, compared to £126 for an Airbnb or Vrbo rental.

In Cardiff and Belfast, savings are more modest, but could still see holidaymakers make savings over the course of a week, with hotel rooms costing £5 less on average in Belfast (£99 versus £104), and £11 less in Cardiff per night (£108 versus £119).

Which? found that hotel rates in many Asian cities are also comparatively cheap when contrasted with listings on Airbnb and Vrbo. In Hong Kong for example, one-bed listings are 85 per cent (£45) more expensive on average, setting travellers back £98 per night, compared with just £53 for a hotel room, with similar findings in Singapore and Dubai.

That said, hotels aren’t cheaper everywhere. For instance, in France, which has one of the largest supplies of private rentals in the world (the number of listings for France is second only to the U.S, Which? notes), Airbnb and Vrbo listings are cheaper or the same price as hotels in five of the seven destinations researchers looked at. A one-bedroom rental typically cost less than a hotel room in Antibes, Biarritz, La Rochelle and Avignon, while they are the same price in Nice. However, rental listings in Bordeaux and Paris are more expensive on average, the watchdog adds.

Which? notes that holiday lets rose in popularity during the pandemic, and continued demand has likely played a role in rising prices.

It says that although a hotel stay may be more cost-effective than a room rental in many destinations, hotels have also seen their prices rise rapidly, with UK room rates up 11 per cent on average last year when compared with 2019, and U.S rates up 14 per cent, according to hospitality analyst CoStar.

The watchdog notes that private rentals can still offer good value, however – and larger groups are more likely to save when compared to booking into a hotel.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: ‘Many holidaymakers may be surprised to discover that the average cost of hotels in many destinations is cheaper than one-bedroom holiday lets, which are often promoted as a popular option for travellers trying to save money.

‘When planning your next trip, don’t assume a hotel will cost more, but instead check rates across different platforms. For larger groups that need more rooms and space, private rentals are still likely to beat hotels on price.’

Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds has firmly put Wrexham on the map. 

The Deadpool actor, 46, took over Wrexham AFC with his friend, sitcom star Rob McElhenney, in 2021.

The team’s fortunes have been transformed under the celebrity duo’s leadership, with the Red Dragons getting promoted to League Two in April, ending their 15-year exile from the Football League. 

And it’s game on for Wrexham’s tourism industry too, with the allure of the A-listers leading to a surge in holidaymakers in the city. There’s been a 44 per cent rise in the number of visitors arriving by rail since April, according to Trainline, and Airbnb has recorded a boom in Wrexham getaways over the past couple of years. Jim Jones, chief executive of North Wales Tourism, said that Reynolds and McElhenney have given the region a ‘£1billion boost’ since acquiring Wrexham AFC. 

In light of Wrexham’s newfound fame, local Robin Proctor – who has lived there for 25 years and rents out his home on the house swap site HomeExchange – has shared his tips for the best things to do in Wrexham and the surrounding Wrexham County Borough, from restaurants to dine at to historic sites to visit…

TOP SPOTS FOR FOOD AND DRINK

Robin says The Fat Boar bar and restaurant, which lies on Yorke Street, is the ‘perfect’ city centre spot, whether you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, a drink in a beer garden or a romantic meal for two. 

Dishes include servings of steak and fish and chips, while drinks range from ‘real ales’ to a ‘huge list of gins’ , the bar’s website reveals. 

If you’re up for a short drive, Robin – who runs a property development business – recommends heading to The Boat at Erbistock, a riverside pub that’s set along the river Dee in the nearby village of Erbistock. 

The 17th-century pub is worth the trip, he says, praising the ‘great’ food and location.

‘We aim to use as much fresh local produce as possible,’ the pub’s website notes. It adds that beer drinkers are in luck, as the venue is ‘blessed with a number of extremely good breweries within just a few miles’. 

Another historic restaurant recommended by Robin is The Corn Mill, a 14th-century watermill and pub that overlooks the rapids of the river Dee in the ‘beautiful’ nearby town of Llangollen.

There, you might dine on wild boar pie for main course followed by marmalade and white chocolate cheesecake for dessert.

Watching Wrexham AFC – the Red Dragons – play a match at The Racecourse Ground, the city’s football stadium, is the most obvious form of entertainment when visiting Wrexham, Robin says.  

The stadium is the world’s oldest international football ground still in use – Guinness World Records reveals that ‘the first international match was played at the Racecourse on March 5, 1877, when Scotland visited Wales’.

Also in Wrexham is ‘one of the seven wonders of Wales’ – Saint Giles parish church, which was built in 1506.

Robin notes that thrill-seekers can go mountain biking in Llandegla Forest, which lies near the city, with adventure company OnePlanetAdventure. 

The Wrexham local also recommends a trip to Erddig Hall, an 18th-century manor surrounded by 1,200 acres (486 hectares) of parkland south of the city.

He notes that it might appeal to Downton Abbey fans, as it has been described as ‘the most evocative Upstairs Downstairs house in Britain’ due to the insight it offers into the lives of both the staff and well-heeled residents that formerly inhabited the property.

Robin suggests that you hop on a train at Wrexham General Station and ride along the coast. One enticing destination is the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno (above) 

Another place to visit, Robin advises, is the ‘beautiful’ 19th-century Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Wrexham County’s World Heritage Site. He says that you can walk or cycle along it, or even choose to glide along the top in a canal boat.  

Eryri National Park, formerly known as Snowdonia, is just an hour’s drive from the city centre. Although it’s not in Wrexham County, Robin says it’s a great day trip if you are staying in or around Wrexham. He suggests climbing the national park’s mountains or visiting its breathtaking beaches.  

Don’t have a car? Robin suggests that you hop on a train at Wrexham General Station and travel along the Cardiff to Holyhead line, stopping off along the way at Chirk Castle or the neighbouring walled city of Chester.

He says that the train also runs along the North Wales coast, with stops that include the historical town of Conwy, seaside resort Colwyn Bay and, via a change of train, the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno.

WHERE TO STAY

Wrexham has several attractive properties available for visitors to rent via HomeExchange, Robin highlights.

The website, which operates in the UK as well as France, Croatia and the U.S, allows travellers to swap homes with fellow members of the site. 

Robin, who has five exchanges planned this year via the house swap site, says: ‘For just £180 a year membership, you can stay in Wrexham for every single football game of the season if you please.’ 

If you stay in Robin’s riverside home, a converted watermill with five bedrooms, you’ll be based just a 10-minute drive from the Wrexham AFC football ground.

There are plenty of Airbnb options to choose from too. Airbnb has seen a significant upturn in visitors to Wrexham since Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the football club, with nights stayed in the Welsh town ‘hitting an ‘all-time high’ in 2022, the booking platform told MailOnline Travel. 

Amanda Cupples, general manager of the UK and Northern Europe at Airbnb, said: ‘The rise of the Red Dragons is drawing guests to Wrexham and putting money in the pockets of local families who host on Airbnb.

‘As the cost of living continues to rise, this will help more locals boost their income and help make ends meet.’

Just outside of the city, you’ll find Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa, a four-star hotel with ‘beautifully modern bedrooms’ and ‘opulent’ spa and leisure facilities. 

Another option is The Hand at Llanarmon, an ‘ancient hostelry’ that lies around a 40-minute drive away from the city. The Mail checked in and found that it ‘offers a rare mix – fine cuisine amid authentic muddy countryside’.

An American Airbnb host has been slammed for leaving their guests with a ‘ridiculous’ amount of rules plastered onto all surfaces of the property, including potted plants and door knobs.

Becky, from Texas, went on a weekend getaway with a her family and a few friends – but the sight of their rental ‘took away the feeling of being on holiday’.

The group was disgruntled to find labels on cupboards, beds, doors, walls, and more with passive aggressive caution notices.

Most of the rules warned renters against touching fragile property – including a supposedly 10,000-year-old room divider that would ‘break’ if looked at the wrong way.

Other notes dissuaded renters from ‘pushing’ or ‘pulling’ the door on the microwave, touching potted plants, or turning the lever on an antique door.

Becky walked through the property and made note of some of the rules, recording her process in a video.

‘I don’t get it, the rules displayed all over the house just killed me,’ she said.

‘It seemed like every room and surface had a note. It almost felt like it wasn’t a vacation with so many rules.’

Some notes were reasonable, such as notifying renters that the microwave was automatic and didn’t need to be slammed, or asking not to clean marble countertops with abrasives. 

But others made Becky question why the property was rented out at all.

A note was found on a large wooden display cabinet, saying: ‘Antique and fragile. Please do not attempt to open or pull on knobs.’

All the bedrooms in the property had a large warning stuck above the beds claiming jumping was not allowed, and that ‘any breakage of beds will be immediately passed to renters.’

Shelves with copper utensils and potted plants were deemed for ‘owner use only’ and renters were instructed not to touch them.

The wooden dining table was also deemed fragile, with a large note informing: ‘This was our grandmother’s table. Please be kind to it and use a placemat.’

‘Upon departure please leave all furniture and bedding in respective rooms and houses where originally found,’ the last one said.

Many were confused about the owner’s decision to rent such a fragile property out to strangers. 

‘Sounds like this stuff should not be in an AirBnB,’ a woman said.

‘Never put sentimental, priceless, or antique items in an Airbnb,’ another wrote. ‘There’s a reason they’re all filled with the same IKEA showroom furniture.’

‘I think they are in the wrong business. Maybe they meant to open a museum,’ a man joked.

‘Why the hell do they have so many personal or sentimental items in a space that is rented out?’ a fourth asked.

With less than a month before Warner Bros.’ highly-anticipated Barbie movie, fans can get a chance to stay in the real life Malibu DreamHouse… for free.

AirBnB announced on Monday that the DreamHouse in Malibu will be available for fans to book two free one-night stays for two guests apiece on July 21 and July 22.

The stays will be free of charge because, according to an Airbnb press release, ‘because Ken couldn’t figure out how to put a price on Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse.’

Fans can start to request a room at the DreamHouse on Monday, July 17 at 10 AM PT at AirBNB.com/KensDreamHouse. 

The press release – which features photos from photographer Joyce Lee – even includes a quote from the fictional Ken – played by Ryan Gosling, who just embarked on a global press tour with co-star Margot Robbie.
