Pep Guardiola has admitted that Kalvin Phillips still ‘struggles’ in Manchester City‘s system but insists the midfielder ‘always wants to learn’.

Phillips, 27, has made just 23 appearances for the Treble winners since completing a £45million move from Leeds United back in 2022.

Much had been expected of the England international, after strong performances at Leeds, however he has played a bit-part role for Guardiola’s side.

Phillips, however, may get another chance to prove his worth on Wednesday night when Manchester City travel to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup

With a number of injuries in the squad, Phillips will likely feature in the match and, ahead of the game, Guardiola opened up on the midfielder’s struggles.

Reflecting on Phillips’ time with Leeds, Guardiola said: ‘Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career,’ said Guardiola.

‘I’d love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him. We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him]’.

During his eight years in the Leeds first-team, Phillips established himself as one of England’s strongest holding midfielders – leading City to launch a lucrative bid for him.

However, after making just 21 appearances in all competitions last season, there were rumours that Phillips could be on his way out during the summer window.

‘The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes,’ said Guardiola. ‘He said ‘no, I want to stay’.

‘We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open minded, always wants to learn and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do.’

City have been contending with persistent injury problems at the start of the campaign and are set to rest a number of stars at St James’ Park.

Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias will not start the third-round game, with Phillips set to be given an opportunity to impress in Rodri’s absence.

‘The problem is the lack of rest – mentally especially,’ Guardiola added. ‘This is the problem. Two or three weeks off between seasons, it’s nothing.

‘The problem is a lack of rest, year on year. The Champions League will be longer in future and it is what it is. I complain a little bit here and then forget it’.

Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Rippon made history this weekend as the oldest ever contestant to perform on the BBC ballroom show.

And though the broadcaster, 78, floored viewers and judges alike with her impressive flexibility and THAT high leg kick, she has admitted that her ageis something that ‘does worry’ her on the show.

Angela told Radio Times that she has wanted to do the show for years but has only been given the opportunity now.

She told the publication: ‘The first words out of my mouth were, “Why didn’t you ask me ten years ago when I was a lot younger?”

‘I’m doing Strictly this year because it’s the first time they’ve asked me.’

But despite her late-coming to the programme, Angela is determined to let nothing hold her back.

She continued: ‘I look at the younger people and I know I’m not as fit or strong – that’s just a medical fact. But I play tennis, I go to pilates and ballet classes, so I’m pretty fit for someone of my age.

‘I’ve told my pro partner, Kai, there are things I can do, and things I can’t. I just want to do everything properly. I’ve told him, “Challenge me.”’

Angela, who hosted the original version of the programme Come Dancing, has been partnered with professional dancer Kai Widdingtron.

Angela and Kai performed the Cha Cha Cha to Shirley Bassey‘s version of the Pink! song, Get the Party Started and received 28 points out of 40 on Saturday.

During the routine, Angela shocked the judges and viewers when she showcased her incredible flexibility and stretched her leg over head head.

And it appears their relationship may take plenty of credit for Angela’s glowing performance.

She explained: ‘I love him already. We clicked when we met… We laughed all through our first meeting. I’m a very happy bunny that it’s Kai.

‘I told the producers, “I need someone strong, patient and with a sense of humour.” He’s got all those qualities, and he’s a brilliant dancer and choreographer. He and his partner, Nadiya Bychkova, are both fabulous.’

As for what’s next after Strictly, Angela explained that she simply wants to continue working, in a profession she ‘adores’.

She said: ‘People told me, “They’ll never employ anyone over 50.” Well, there’s me, Gloria Hunniford and Julia Somerville, and we’re in year 15 of Rip Off Britain – we’re still hanging in there.’

On Saturday, Angela wowed viewers with her performance.

She looked sensational in silver fringe mini dress as she performed to Shirley Bassey‘s cover of Pink’s Get The Party Started before kicking her partner lifted her leg for the dramatic finale.

With the duo impressing the duos scoring 28 for their performance which saw them briefly at the top of the leader board.

Taking to Twitter one fan said:  ‘I need some tips off Angela Rippon. I’d love to dance like she does and I’m literally half her age!’.

While a second wrote: ‘Angela Rippon’s leg though!’.

Someone else joked:  ‘When I grow up I want to be Angela Rippon’.

And: ‘I want Angela Rippon’s legs!’.

It comes after Angela admitted she is finding Strictly training ‘very gruelling’ and her legs ‘feel like they’re going to collapse.’

Speaking in an interview, Angela shed some light on how her training with professional partner Kai is going.

She told The Mirror: ‘My legs feel like they’re about to collapse.

‘I know what I should be doing, I know how it should be feeling, it’s actually making my legs do it to the music. I’m just getting cross and frustrated.’

Angela continued: ‘I’m exhausted. There are bits of me aching that I didn’t know I had. I’m enjoying doing it and I’m fine with the bits that I get right. But I get very angry with myself when I absolutely muck it up and do it wrong.’

Angela’s Strictly stint comes 47 years after she stunned the 27 million viewers of Morecambe and Wise’s 1976 Christmas special by emerging from her newsreader’s desk to perform a high-kicking dance routine, in an era when journalists never ventured into light entertainment.

Aaron Rodgers has told Pat McAfee he considered retiring from football due to the torn Achilles that ruined his season with the New York Jets as it had just got started.

Rodgers. 39, joined McAfee’s show live from his rehab room to provide an update on his comeback and admitted that while thoughts of leaving the game entered his head, he is working on returning.

‘It’s tough, every single day is tough. I’ve been grinding on the rehab and looking forward to getting back out to Jersey at some point,’ Rodgers said. ‘It’s disappointing not to be out there.’

Rodgers, who turns 40 in December, joked that his rehab is the ‘reverse darkness retreat’ as he was in a white room without anything on the walls.

‘I’m well taken care of. This is the time for me to sit and receive and try and find some joy in the process.

‘There’s been some progressions the last couple days that get the hope meter trending upwards a little bit and the joy meter trending up a little bit.

‘I don’t wanna get caught in a timeline, I want to get healthy mentally and physically. But I’m gonna do everything that I can to put myself in a position to play football again at some point.

‘Obviously when this happens there are thoughts of ”is that it’ and ‘are you done?’. I don’t feel like I am. I am going to put myself in position to play again.

‘The first goal was to get out of the cast. The second goal, get out of the boot which coincides with walking. Walking leads to movement, faster movement, ultimately running at some point.

‘Getting out the boot is the next goal. When I can stand up on my own, the boot comes off and then it gets exciting.’

Rodgers admitted he is using manifestation to inspire his comeback.

‘Visualization is an important part of the manifestation process,’ he said. ‘At the core of manifestation is belief. You have to believe it is going to happen again.

‘I’m just visualizing being back on the field. Not a timeline, not this year or next year but being able to run out of a tunnel back out onto a field to do exactly what I love.’

  • Arsenal secured 1-0 win over Everton, marking Toffees fourth loss of the season
  • It ended a long running hoodoo of poor results for the Gunners at Goodison Park
  • Boss Dyche acknowledges that there is ‘massive work to do’ at Merseyside club

Everton boss Sean Dyche admitted he had ‘massive work to do’ at Everton after the Toffees faced their fourth loss in the opening five games of the Premier League campaign.

Arsenal overcame their Goodison Park problems by earning a 1-0 win over Everton courtesy of substitute Leandro Trossard‘s second-half goal.

The Gunners were on a run of bad form when visiting the blue half of Merseyside, and it looked like things might not go their way when Gabriel Martinelli had a goal disallowed for a controversial offside call after 19 minutes.

Everton put in a dogged performance against the Gunners, though it was not enough to find the back of the net at Goodison Park.

The defeat leaves Sean Dyche’s Everton in the relegation zone, with only a solitary point from their first five Premier League games.

After the match, though Dyche praised his side’s defensive efforts, he said it was the ‘details’ which have cost his side this season.

‘We defended in numbers, did well in that side of the game but with the ball we were miles off.

‘We set the players up, the details have cost us all season. You’ve got to stay focused, they’ve got some top players.’ He added.

‘The performance of the officials was on par with the norm. You want consistency. They’re right in front of our eyes and nothing gets done.

‘They’re a top side, we huffed and puffed but didn’t create enough.

The Toffees boss acknowledged the squad’s lack of depth, but assured that it was something the club are working on.

For Sean Dyche, he had options of note on the Everton bench this time — including Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

A luxury of nine men on hand, most of whom were senior players, in comparison to the mere four established outfield substitutions available against Sheffield United in their previous league game.

Sean Dyche’s team scored twice in drawing at Sheffield United just before the international break but they are the only goals on the Everton ledger after five league games.

‘We’re getting players fit, we’re getting a bit deeper in our squad. The noise has been there for a couple of seasons. We’re looking to constantly work to correct it.

‘It’s a work in progress. There’s massive amounts of work to be done and it will take time.’

Everton have now lost six of their last seven Premier League games at Goodison Park and they have lost their last three by a 1-0 scoreline

  • The Belgian insisted that that level of support is ‘what you want to experience’
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast  It’s All Kicking Off

Romelu Lukaku admitted that seeing the mass turnout of Roma fans on his arrival at Ciampino Airport filled him with ‘positive thoughts’ ahead of his loan move from Chelsea

The Belgian forward has once again departed the Blues for Italy, joining Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi on the penultimate day of the transfer window to secure regular football.

After a £98million move from Inter to Stamford Bridge in 2021, it has been a far from comfortable return to west London which has yielded just 15 goals in 44 games, with a return to Inter on loan coming last season.

With his place in the side under threat once again, seemingly being frozen out of Mauricio Pochettino‘s first-team, Lukaku has once again sought the refuge of Serie A football, with Roma keen to bring the striker in on loan.

In an interview now released by the Europa League runners-up, Lukaku has admitted that seeing the throngs of people who turned out to welcome him to the Italian capital was ‘beautiful’.

‘You know what’s beautiful? That Roma fans support the players a lot if they play well,’ he said. ‘This, for a person like me and for the rest of the team, is good for all of us.’

‘When I landed and saw all those people waiting for me I could only think positive thoughts. That’s what you want to experience when you play football. You live for those emotions,’ he added.

‘The Colosseum? It’s beautiful, it’s the first time for me because I’ve never been here before. Now I can see the symbol of Rome, it’s a moment I’ve been waiting for for many years because when I was little it was impossible to see it. Now I’m here and I want to take some nice photos to show my children.’

Since arriving at the Giallorossi Lukaku has played just 19 minutes of competitive football as he works his way back to full fitness, coming on in a recent 2-1 defeat to AC Milan.

Mourinho’s side have not made the best of starts to life in 2023-24, currently sat  18th after three games having drawn their opener against Salernitana, followed by defeats to Verona and Milan, both 2-1.

There is great expectation on the 30-year-old to rediscover his best form after a difficult 12 months that saw him struggle to cement a starting berth at Inter Milan last season and fail to find the net in the Qatar World Cup.

Lukaku touched down via private jet at Rome’s Ciampino airport on Tuesday afternoon and was met by eager supporters anticipating his arrival, the player lifting a Roma scarf above his head to the evident joy of the masses.

There were loud roars from the crowd as he stepped out at the city’s second airport waving, touching his chest and showing his appreciation for the welcome, beaming all the while.

Former Proud Boys boss Enrique Tarrio has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison after begging a judge for mercy for commanding the Capitol siege – the longest sentence handed down over January 6.

Tarrio, 39, was the final leader of the neo-fascist group convicted of seditious conspiracy to be sentenced and faced 33 years in prison. Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that Tarrio was ‘the ultimate leader of that conspiracy,’ but still did not abide by the government’s sentence request.

During his hearing, Tarrio dropped a bombshell and admitted that Trump lost the 2020 election. ‘On November 3, 2020, something that I never expected happened – my candidate lost. I felt like something was personally stolen from me.’

The Florida-native turned to blame the right-wing media saying: ‘Every media channel that I turned to told me I was justified.’ He said that he was ‘not a political zealot’ and changing the outcome of the election was not his goal on January 6.

The far-right propagandist wasn’t in Washington on January 6 – he was arrested two days earlier in a separate case – but he was convicted of helping put in motion and encourage the violence interrupted Congress‘ certification of Biden’s electoral victory after Donald Trump‘s electoral loss.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and escorted by U.S. Marshals, the Cuban-American from Florida took the stand to ask judge Timothy Kelly for mercy, apologizing to the officers who responded during the riot and the citizens of D.C., saying he ‘blamed himself.’

‘Today I stand before you a different man… I wish to reorient my life’s purpose… I want to rejoin my local church and be an active part of helping others,’ Tarrio told the court. ‘I hope your honor can hear the sincerity… please show me mercy… ‘Do not take my 40s from me… God bless this entire court.’

He claimed that he had really believed the presidential election was stolen and let media coverage influence his desire to ‘protect’ right wingers from Antifa protesters.

‘I have failed as a son, as a fiancée, as a brother, as a nephew… I have been selfish,’ Tarrio said.

Judge Kelly said of January 6: ‘That day broke our previously unbroken tradition of the peaceful transfer of power, which is truly among the most precious things that we had as Americans… that previously unbroken string is now broken. And it’s going to take time and effort to fix it.’

The judge seemed to be particularly disturbed by Tarrio’s infamously comparison of the January 6 rioters to the nation’s founding fathers.

He added: ‘[Tarrio’s] apologized here today, but I must say, comparing what Dominic Pezzola did to George Washington – the man who helped encourage the notion of a peaceful, orderly transfer of power – by relinquishing power to let someone else be chosen… it slanders the father of our country.’

Three fellow Proud Boys found guilty by a Washington D.C. jury of the rarely used sedition charge were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 18 years – less than prosecutors wanted.

Tarrio’s defense team argued during the sentencing hearing that the convicted sedition conspiracist is a ‘misguided patriot’ instead of a terrorist, and was just being a ‘Keyboard Ninja,’ saying things ‘he shouldn’t have,’ as reported by independent journalist Gonzo News.

Judge Kelly reminded Tarrio’s lawyers team that a jury did not buy that defense strategy when it decided to convict him, and ruled that Tarrio was at the top of the Proud Boy’s command structure during the riot.

Ultimately the judge ruled Tarrio’s crimes intended to coerce the conduct of government when his lieutenants brought down a barrier between police and rioters and thus qualified him for terrorism enhancement for his sentencing.

However, the judge again noted the Proud Boys’ crimes did not have the terror ‘intent’ of someone who blows up a building.

Tarrio’s aunt and godmother sent in letters pleading for leniency which were read by defense attorney Nayib Hassan.

‘Henry [Tarrio’s birth name] is not a monster like he’s made out to be,’ the letter read.

Tarrio’s mother, fiancée, and his younger sister also spoke of Tarrio’s character as they asked for leniency, saying his incarceration has greatly affected his family.

The younger sister teared up as she spoke, saying: ‘he is the glue that keeps us together… the idea of him not being around for all the milestones is hard to bear.’

The Justice Department has asked for Tarrio to spend more than three decades in prison, describing him as the ringleader of a plot to use violence to shatter the cornerstone of American democracy and overturn the election victory by Joe Biden, a Democrat, over Trump, the Republican incumbent.

Tarrio discussed ‘revolutions’ and ‘storming’ the Capitol complex prior to January 6, but was arrested upon entry into the capital on January 5, 2021 for a prior offense of burning the Black Lives Matter flag and on several weapons charges.

The Miami native was supposed to be sentenced last week in Washington’s federal court, but his hearing was delayed because Judge Kelly got sick.

Kelly, who was nominated to the bench by Trump, sentenced Tarrio’s co-defendants to lengthy prison terms – though far shorter than prosecutors were seeking.

Self-described Proud Boys organizer Joe Biggs sobbed as he was sentenced to 17 years on Thursday for his role in the riot after pleading for leniency to take care of his daughter and ailing mother.

Judge Kelly wasn’t having it, as he said Americans are the envy of the world and U.S. elections must be respected, telling Biggs: ‘You did play a role in riling up the crowd.

‘If you don’t like how an election is being conducted… you can speak out, call, write or meet with election officials. You can engage in peaceful protest. File a lawsuit.’

The judge ruled that Biggs qualified for a terrorism sentencing enhancement because he teared down a fence that stood between police and rioters.

Prosecutors on Tuesday asked Kelly to hand out a harsher punishment for Tarrio than his co-defendants, arguing he was the leader of the operation, and as a someone with a criminal record was a less sympathetic figure than Biggs, who’s a veteran.

‘We need to make sure the consequences are clear to anybody who might be unhappy with any future election as long as this case is remembered…this was a calculated act of terrorism,’ prosecutors said during the sentencing.

Ethan Nordean, who prosecutors said was the Proud Boys’ leader on the ground on January 6, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, tying the record for the longest sentence in the attack.

Prosecutors had asked for 27 years for Nordean, who was a Seattle-area Proud Boys chapter president.

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, who was found guilty of seditious conspiracy in a separate case, was sentenced in May to 18 years in prison. Prosecutors, who had sought 25 years for Rhodes, are appealing his sentence and the punishments of other members of his antigovernment militia group.

‘Tarrio has repeatedly and publicly indicated that he has no regrets about what he helped make happen on January 6,’ prosecutors wrote in court documents.

Lawyers for the Proud Boys deny that there was any plot to attack the Capitol or stop the transfer of presidential power.

‘There is zero evidence to suggest Tarrio directed any participants to storm the U.S. Capitol building prior to or during the event,’ his attorneys wrote in court papers.

‘Participating in a plan for the Proud Boys to protest on January 6 is not the same as directing others on the ground to storm the Capitol by any means necessary.’

Police arrested Tarrio in Washington on Jan. 4, 2021, on charges that he defaced a Black Lives Matter banner during an earlier rally in the nation´s capital, but law enforcement officials later said he was arrested in part over concerns about the potential for unrest during the certification. He complied with a judge´s order to leave the city after his arrest.

On Jan. 6, dozens of Proud Boys leaders, members and associates were among the first rioters to breach the Capitol. The mob´s assault overwhelmed police, forced lawmakers to flee the House and Senate floors and disrupted the joint session of Congress for certifying Biden´s victory.

The backbone of the government´s case was hundreds of messages exchanged by Proud Boys in the days leading up to Janury 6.

As Proud Boys swarmed the Capitol, Tarrio cheered them on from afar, writing on social media: ‘Do what must be done.’ In a Proud Boys encrypted group chat later that day someone asked what they should do next.

Tarrio responded: ‘Do it again.’

‘Make no mistake,’ Tarrio wrote in another message. ‘We did this.’

Tarrio led the neo-fascist group – known for street fights with left-wing activists – when Trump infamously told the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by’ during his first debate with Joe Biden.

During the month long trial, prosecutors argued that the Proud Boys viewed themselves as foot soldiers fighting for Trump as the Republican spread lies that Democrats stole the election from him.

Attorneys argued that members of the group were prepared to go to war to keep their preferred leader in power.

Defense lawyers denied there was any plot to attack the Capitol or stop Congress’ certification of Biden’s win.

The investigation has become the largest for the Justice Department in American history, and it hadn’t tried a seditious conspiracy case in over a decade.

The riots followed months of false claims by Trump and his allies that the election had been rigged against him.

A select House committee investigated the riots and in its final report accused Trump of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The committee estimated that from the election to Jan. 6, the president and aides made hundreds of efforts to pressure officials to overturn the results.

Targets included states he lost but that had GOP-led legislatures such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona.

Trump has since been indicted for this role in the riots, with a grand jury indictment accusing him of spreading ‘lies’ and ‘sham’ investigations while stoking an ‘angry’ mob on January 6.

Special Counsel Jack Smith said in a televised public statement following the release of the indictment that the attack on the Capitol was ‘fueled by lies’ made by Trump ‘targeted at obstructing the bedrock function of the U.S. government – the nation’s process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election.’ He pledged that his office will conduct a ‘speedy’ trial.

Trump is facing four counts including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and obstruct the electoral count for trying to overturn the 2020 election. The 45-page indictment says he was ‘determined to remain in power’ despite ‘having lost.’

He and his six co-conspirators ‘used knowingly false claims of election fraud’ to try to ‘subvert the legitimate election results and change electoral votes’ to take down Joe Biden, according to the indictment.

He has plead not guilty.

When little-known senator Ralph Babet jumped to his feet on Tuesday to raise concerns about the transparency of Scott Morrison’s government, there was a split- second of silence as his colleagues pondered his question.

The question was directed at Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, who represents the Prime Minister in the Senate.

The United Australia Party senator asked her: ‘Now minister… the former Morrison government, this mob over here, honoured an appallingly low rate of just 48.7 per cent of Senate order for production of document requests. How terrible.

‘Does the minister believe that the former Morrison government was a transparent government? Because I don’t think they were.’

She rose to her feet as those behind her appeared perplexed. Some even grumbled about the failings of the previous government.

Then Liberal senator Michaelia Cash stated the obvious: Beware the supplementary questions.

The Government is under increased pressure to be more transparent, amid further questions about the decision to block Qatar Airways from having more access to Australia. The decision is said to have cost Australian travellers up to 40% on their airfares.

But Penny Wong has been in parliament for 21 years, and her guard was up.

‘I am going to anticipate your next question… I am someone who has been her for quite a long time. I have never seen as many OPDs [orders for the production of documents] used as indiscriminately as the Opposition… are using them,’ she said.

‘I don’t believe any fair minded person looking at Mr Morrison’s secret ministries or the Robodebt tragedy would think the standards of transparency were sufficient.

‘We remember what Mr Morrison was like and the lack of accountability… even to his own colleagues when he took their jobs from them.’

Mr Babet said she obviously knew where he was going this ‘not being your first rodeo’.

‘Your government is at 20.4 per cent. Twice as secretive as Scott Morrison’s government. Why?’

Ms Wong argued there had been a significant increase in the amount of OPDs being filed, and the amount being approved, but has vowed to investigate Mr Babet’s question.

Ms Wong was subjected to most of the scrutiny in the Senate on Tuesday given her role as the representative for the Prime Minister in the chamber.

She was also peppered with questions from Nationals Leader of the Senate Bridget McKenzie, who questioned the division within Labor about the Qatar Airways decision.

Ms McKenzie asked for clarity as to ‘what exactly the national interest grounds’ in blocking additional flights from Qatar were.

‘The minister considers a range of factors when determining whether an expansion of bilateral air rights is in our national interest,’ Ms Wong said.

She maintained there was nothing unusual about the government’s decision, and noted Qatar is welcome to increase flights into Adelaide, Avalon, Cairns, Canberra and the Gold Coast.

Her answer was met with jeers from the Coalition, demanding to know just what those factors were.

Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, Mr Albanese was facing intense questioning of his own.

The Nationals MP for Cowper, Pat Conaghan asked if the PM had ‘a conversation of any kind with Mr Alan Joyce prior to the government’s decision concerning Qatar Airways’.

The PM, realising the breadth of the question, responded: ‘I can confirm that I’ve met Alan Joyce, which is basically what the question was.’

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton later asked if Mr Albanese had any conversations with Virgin Australia over the application.

Mr Albanese said: ‘Yes.’

Later, Mr Albanese faced another question, this time from LNP’s Bert van Manen, who asked if he had any conversations with Mr Joyce or senior execitves regarding the application before a decision was handed down.

Mr Albanese said: ‘No.’

Labor was elected on a policy of transparency, and is now facing increasing calls from across the chamber to honour that commitment.

While the Coalition would like an inquiry into the Qatar decision, the Greens are first calling on the government to release documents from the time of the decision.

Erling Haaland admits he would have been ‘FUMING’ if Manchester City had been at the wrong end of Nathan Ake’s controversial goal against Fulham

  • Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick in a dominant 5-1 victory over Fulham
  • Nathan Ake though put Manchester City 2-1 ahead in controversial fashion
  • Haaland admitted that Fulham should feel hard done by from City’s second goal

Erling Haaland admitted he would have been ‘fuming’ if Manchester City had been on the wrong end of their controversial second goal against Fulham.

With the score level at 1-1, Nathan Ake put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead with a header, though many expected it to be ruled out for offside.

Fulham’s defensive line had moved up, leaving Manuel Akanji offside as the defender jumped over the ball before it hit the back of the net.

Referee Michael Oliver awarded the goal in a decision which was not overturned by VAR, leaving Fulham players and boss Marco Silva fuming – as City then went on to run away with a dominant 5-1 victory.

Haaland, who netted his first hat-trick of the season during the victory, made an honest admission after the game as he said: ‘It was the perfect end of the week. It’s good to be back. In the end we win 5-1 and it’s well deserved. I think it was offside as well, I feel bad for them, I would be fuming after this as well. It must be a horrible feeling for them.

‘Last year was also difficult to start but we’ve been taking more points now. In the end it’s been a perfect start because we’ve won four games, but we have a much higher level and it’s about working towards that.’

Oliver after consulting with his assistant decided that Akanji hadn’t sought to gain an advantage despite feinting to get the ball and raise a leg which appeared to influence Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

VAR official Tony Harrington decided no error had been made so it didn’t merit Oliver watching again pitch-side.

However, prior to the restart, the goal was shown on the giants screens at the Etihad, prompting pandemonium among the Fulham players and a long delay, as the rather obvious offside was seemingly clear to all.

Fulham boss Silva after the game said: ‘What I can say is that everyone that plays football, that has played football that has some knowledge about football is one hundred per cent sure that you disallow that goal. Of course, anyone would be furious if a goal like that comes against you.

‘For the linesman, it can be difficult. Is he in an offside position, can he see or not? But for the VAR it’s impossible not to disallow that goal.

‘It’s clear he [Akanji] is in the line of the ball. He pulled away from the line of the ball in the direction of the goal and influenced completely the goalkeeper and the goalkeeper’s reaction. Its’ a clear offside and this is what will concern anyone in football. How that goal was allowed by the VAR?’

Mail Sport’s Chris Foy said that Oliver would have ruled out Ake’s goal if he had been sent to his screen.

DOJ admits there are potential ‘limitations’ to open investigation into whistleblower’s bombshell Hunter Biden probe politicization claims

  • Republicans are worried that the DOJ is stonewalling watchdog Horowitz from conducting an investigation of the whistleblower claims
  • IRS Whistleblower Gary Shapley stated publicly that he’s brought his concerns to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz

A top Justice Department watchdog warns that a potential ‘jurisdictional issue’ could hamper its open investigation into bombshell claims of rampant political interference in the Hunter Biden criminal probe.

IRS supervisory agent Gary Shapley and IRS agent Joseph Ziegler – who worked on the Hunter Biden criminal investigation – recently told Congress that the DOJ had significantly interfered into the investigation run by the Delaware field office.

Shapley stated publicly that he’s brought his concerns to Inspector General Michael Horowitz and also has filed a complaint claiming he was retaliated against for blowing the whistle on politicization in the Hunter Biden investigation.

Top watchdog Horowitz assured congressional leaders that his office is investigating information obtained by Shapley, in a letter obtained by DailyMail.com Tuesday.

But he said the complaints made by the whistleblower might fall under the purview of the Office of Professional Responsibility, which would hamper its independent investigation.

Horowitz writes that his team is ‘mindful’ of the ‘potential limitations’ of his office due to a ‘jurisdictional issue’ that would require OPR to take over the probe.

Shapley has claimed that the DOJ dragged out the investigation into Hunter Biden to allow the statute of limitations to run out on some criminal charges.

He also alleged that the department blocked investigators from interviewing Hunter Biden giving him ‘special treatment’ throughout the probe not afforded to most subjects.

In addition, Shapley’s big bombshell was that Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss was prevented by Biden appointed prosecutors from bringing charges against the president’s son in Washington, D.C., and California.

Horowitz went on to tell the lawmakers that he could not share additional details because the investigation is ‘ongoing’ and ‘related to an ongoing criminal case.’

A sweetheart plea deal that would have seen Hunter Biden plead guilty to two tax crimes and a gun charge blew up last month when a judge informed Hunter he could be prosecuted in the future for other charges – including a possible indictment for failing to register as a foreign agent.

The July 19 letter obtained by DailyMail.com was addressed to three GOP committee chairmen – House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Oversight ChairJames Comer, R-Ky., and Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith, R-Mo.

The chairmen wrote back asking Horowitz to lay out the roadblocks he is facing, worried that the DOJ is stonewalling Horowitz from conducting an investigation of the whistleblower claims.

‘DOJ appears to be continuing to sacrifice its professional responsibility to cover for the President’s son — and perhaps, the President himself,’ the chairmen wrote.

They requested all documents and information related to whether there had been any limitations on the investigation of DOJ’s handling of the case.

Michael Oher admits he’s ‘grateful for the Tuohys’ in interview given just just HOURS before filing lawsuit against ‘adoptive’ family for ‘tricking him into signing conservatorship’ and earning nothing for 2009 hit movie The Blind Side

  • The former NFL player filed a legal petition against the Tuohy family Monday
  • Prior to the filing, Oher promoted his book on Mississippi Public Broadcasting
  • DailyMail.com provides all the latest international sports news

Michael Oher detailed his frustrations with The Blind Side amid explaining his tough upbringing prior to a legal filing against the Tuohy family, popularized in the 2009 film.

Oher joined Marshall Ramsey on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Monday morning, prior to the stunning announcement of a legal petition against the family, to promote his latest book; When Your Back’s Against the Wall.

In the filing, Oher alleged he had been tricked into signing Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy on as his conservators, which allowed them to profit off his name and likeness.

The former first-round draft pick did not address the issue and only briefly mentioned the famed family during the 48-minute interview.

Though, as he has done several times down the years, criticized the effect the film and the preceding 2006 book by Michael Lewis have had upon him.

The 2009 film The Blind Side captured some of Oher’s story but apparently it had misnomers

‘Through help to this day right here, my circle is getting me back to who I was and still healing prior to when all these stories were created,’ Oher said.

‘The personality, just everything you get it taken away from it and things that are out of control. You just continue to fight and eventually get back on course.’

Oher, a Super Bowl champion with the Ravens, spoke to his appreciation for the Tuohys but detailed a supposed misnomer within the The Blind Side

‘Whatever you see in the movie or books you’ve have to understand what it took for me be this 18-year-old kid when this story took shape.’

Oher was 20 at the time of the book’s release and 23 upon the film’s release.

‘And the things I went through and had to do to go through to that point I went through from 3 years old to 18 when I moved in with the Tuohy family – who I’m grateful for letting me stay my senior year there.

‘But you have to understand, I was an All-American football player before I moved in with them, you have to understand what it took for me to get to that point.’

Oher has previously suggested the stories surrounding his life were detrimental to his football career.

In 2012 at Super Bowl media day, he said

The 37-year-old alluded to his accomplishments being trivialized or quasi-dismissed on radio Monday.

‘From that point prior you get everything taken away from you, the hard work. That’s what I want to let people know, you can get things done.’

Oher detailed his challenges growing up – long before meeting the Tuohy family –  which led him to selling newspapers instead of attending school.

‘I took it upon myself to get out find jobs, sell newspapers, do any and everything – I had steal from grocery stores, just to put food in the refrigerator when I could.

‘I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know if it was the right thing, I just knew it was better than anything else I could be doing.’

Oher also detailed those character-building years, prior to being brought in by the Tuohys, formulated a purpose in him.

‘I want to be able to continue to give back to those – I grew up around so many of those people, who had they been given an opportunity, they would’ve been just as successful in something else.’
