Last year, the biggest story at the Venice Film Festival was the blink-and-you-miss-it visit by actress Florence Pugh, and the beef with director Olivia Wilde which lay behind it.

And this year, the biggest star attending is going to ‘pull a Pugh’ by attending Venice so briefly that he won’t even stay the night.

Two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver, 39, has agreed to show up to promote the movie Ferrari, in which he stars.

However there is such nervousness about being seen to ‘break’ the actors and writers strikes that – even though the film has earned an exemption – he won’t be hanging around.

Driver will be flying from Paris to Venice on a private jet in the morning of Thursday 31st, going up the red carpet in the late afternoon, and flying back again to the Hotel Bristol in Paris that same day.

It’s not yet clear whether he will do any promotional interviews or a press conference before the red carpet. Sources say that he is thinking of making some kind of strike-supporting speech at some point, but details are scarce.

Sources also say that Driver is planning to wear a t-shirt in support of the strikes under his tuxedo.

Co-star Penelope Cruz is now thinking hard about her own outfit options as a result. She is a long-term ambassador of the fashion brand Chanel. 

Nobody in Hollywood wants to be seen doing the wrong thing by the strikers and the whole film and TV industry has ground to a complete stop. 

The writers union, the WGA, went on strike on May 2nd, and were followed by SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, on July 14th.

Ferrari actors (and writers) can attend with out breaking the strikes as the film has been given an exemption because it was made by an independent, Neon, not a studio.

The stars of the film Priscilla, about Priscilla Presley’s life, can also attend without breaking the strike as it was made in Canada.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that Priscilla has a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement which would allow cast including Jacob Elordi – who plays Elvis – to come. It’s not clear whether he will though.

Priscilla Presley, on whose 1985 memoir it is based, is expected to attend. She is an actress, herself, having appeared in Dallas and the Naked Gun films.

Most other stars have no option but to stay away. Bradley Cooper, who wrote, produced stars in and directed Maestro, about the conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, will not be in Venice to see possibly the defining film of his career premiere. It is by Netflix, who are a struck company.

A festival spokesman confirmed last month that he would not attend in solidarity with the strike by the actors union SAG-AFTRA.

The film Challengers, a tennis and three-somes drama starring Zendaya and Josh O’Connor, of The Crown, was going to open the festival but that dropped after the actor’s came on strike in July.

The prestige film Poor Things, an adaptation of a Frankenstein-esque gothic tale starring Emma Stone, will premiere at the festival but star Emma Stone and the rest of the cast will not be there.

Ferrari is a film by renowned director Michael Man and examines three months in the life of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the car company. He has money trouble, is grieving his son who died, and has a child with his mistress – which is discovered by his wife.

Last year Florence Pugh skipped the press conference and photo call before the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling, in which she starred alongside Harry Styles. It was reported that she and director Olivia Wilde had fallen out during the making of the film, after Styles and Wilde started a love affair.

Pugh was friends with Wilde’s estranged partner Jason Sudeikis via her former relationship with actor Zach Braff. In addition she felt that the marketing of the show, and the focus on her explicit love scenes with Styles, was exploitative and may have blamed director Wilde for it.

She said in a magazine interview: ‘When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry.

‘Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that. That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.’

On the red carpet she and Wilde steered completely clear of each other, arriving at different times and not exchanging any pleasantries. Pugh left directly after the film was screened and did not attend a cast dinner or party. She was at the time making the film Dune 2 in Budapest.

They confirmed their romance in June.

And Holly Ramsay and Adam Peaty‘s relationship appears to be going from strength to strength, as he made an appearance in her latest Instagram post.

The daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, 23, shared a gallery of images from her recent outings, which included a snap of the Olympic swimmer on a countryside dog walk.

Captioning her post: ‘Recently,’ Holly also shared off her abs in a daring black crop top in one image, along with another throwback snap from her trip to Croatia.

Other images showed the blonde beauty dressed in a glamorous black mini dress for a night out, and cycling shorts and an oversized shirt for a shopping trip.

Holly also shared a cute image with her little brother Oscar larking about in a photobooth, before settling down to make friendship bracelets with her family.

Earlier this week, Holly Ramsay stunned in a floral bikini as she shared throwback snaps from her sunny getaway in Croatia.

She showcased her sensational physique in a skimpy bikini as she posed against the idyllic backdrop for a sizzling snap.

The influencer flashed a sweet smile and appeared to be in happy spirits as she soaked up the sun.

Her new boyfriend Adam Peaty, 28, commented on her throwback snaps ‘Get me there’, along with a love heart face emoji.

The couple’s relationship has gone from strength to strength since they confirmed their romance in June.

And Adam Peaty couldn’t hide his appreciation for girlfriend Holly Ramsay, as they jetted off for a romantic getaway to Rome.

The Olympic gold medallist, 28, took to Instagram Stories to share a snap of Holly, 23, beaming in a black dress as they headed to the airport.

Holly then re-posted the snap on her own Stories with the caption: ‘Roma.’

Both Holly and Adam have had struggles with mental health and alcohol addiction. 

In April, Adam pulled out of the British Swimming Championships, and said: ‘A good friend of mine said a gold medal is the coldest thing you will ever wear… because you think it will fix all of your problems [and] it will not.’ 

In December, Holly celebrated two years of sobriety, having previously hit ‘rock bottom’.

She also set up 21 & Over, a podcast for people suffering from anxiety.

Adam has a three-year-old son, George, with his ex- girlfriend Eirianedd Munro. The couple split up last August as he apologised for letting down her and their son.

He said at the time that the couple had decided to go ‘their separate ways’ but that their son George, who is two next month, remained their ‘priority’. 

Announcing the news via social media, Adam wrote: ‘Eiri and George, I’m sorry for letting you down. My only interest is for the well-being of our family at this difficult time.’

Adam DeVine has revealed the moment he and his wife Chloe Bridges watched a man ‘gunned down’ outside their neighbors $1.8 million home.

Emil Lahaziel, 39, died just after 2am on Wednesday morning in Hollywood Hills West after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Despite his co-host’s Blake Anderson, Anders Holm and Kyle Newacheck’s, obvious discomfort, DeVine launched into the moments leading up to Lahaziel’s murder as part of the ‘This Is Important’ Live podcast.

‘This is a true scary thing that just happened. So across the street they were running this like crazy poker game, right?’ he said.

‘People were rolling up in like Lamborghini’s and Bentley’s and Rolls Royce’s and s*** and like old guys, who for sure f*** prostitutes and play cards.

‘And I see these dudes and it’s like fun to sit and watch, [so] me and my wife, we’re sitting up on our balcony, and like, this looks crazy.’

DeVine then pauses telling the audience ‘this is where it gets sad.’

‘Someone was murdered there,’ he continues, before Anderson asks him to repeat what he said but with the added effect of a sinister sound byte. 

‘Someone was murdered,’ he repeats, as Newacheck responds ‘that’s a downer.’

‘Yeah dude, I called that s*** I called that s***. I was like ‘this is dastardly s*** going down here’ and sure enough someone is gunned down,’ he continued. 

‘That is sad,’ Newacheck responds, when Holm quickly adds ‘Yeah a real person, no longer with us.’

‘Yeah but, that happens, people be dying,’ says DeVine defending his retelling of the deadly shooting.

‘This isn’t Hollywood, this is a story about my actual life,’ he continues.

‘I mean its pretty Hollywood, you’re like ‘I guess I live places where people get murdered pretty cool,’ Holm says before the group quickly change the subject.

DeVine was recounting the tragic events of early Wednesday morning, when a 39-year-old man was shot dead in the driveway of his neighbors home.

Lahaziel was later identified to DailyMail.com by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Lahaziel was shot dead while standing in the driveway of a $1.8 million Hollywood Hills West home just after 2am on Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the incident immediately and saw a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds down in front of a residence.

Investigators said Lahaziel was attending a party when the suspect arrived. 

The pair began to argue in the street and the suspect shot the victim several times before fleeing the scene.

Police said the suspect may have gone into another vehicle and that there might be more than one suspect.

Officers performed CPR on Lahaziel but he died at the scene.

DeVine has been sitting with his wife, Chloe Bridges, in their $2.6 million mansion when the incident took place.

The pair were married in a romantic ceremony in Mexico in October 2021 and posted pictures from the lavish seaside nuptials to their socials.

Bridges and DeVine met in 2014 while both on a flight to Louisiana to film the movie The Final Girls. 

During an appearance on the Tonight Show, DeVine shared that he didn’t realize that that Bridges was his co-star. 

After spending time together on set, Devine and Bridges started dating in February 2015.

Devine and Bridges also played alongside each other in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

After years of dating, DeVine proposed to Bridges on a boat ride in Newport Beach in 2019, the pair sharing the news on Instagram.

He wrote: ‘She said yes! Well actually she said ‘ahh Adam’ and then kissed me but I’m pretty sure that means YES! I love Chloe more than anything and I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with her amazing self.’

DeVine made his name alongside co-stars Anderson, Holm and Newacheck’s in Workaholics and played a bumper role in the Pitch Perfect franchise.

ROMAINE WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY

Stand by for a tsunami of lettuce-based puns as American academic Judith Tschann explores the often bizarre etymology of various foods.

Actually, her book, subtitled ‘The Delightful History Of Food Language’, contains no other lettuce-based puns at all, which was a great disappointment: the only one, indeed, of this splendid book. Did you know, for instance, that the word ‘avocado’ comes from ahuacatl in the Nahuatl language, spoken in southern Mexico and central America? And as well as referring to the fruit, ahuacatl can mean ‘testicle’, and no one is quite sure which meaning came first. Was an avocado named after a testicle or a testicle after an avocado?

Moving on swiftly, we establish that ‘apple’ also has two distinct meanings. One is the ’round fruit with crisp flesh’ we are all familiar with, and the other is the fruit eaten by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

The actual fruit they ate was not named in Genesis, but some Jewish commentators on the Torah think it was the fig, and Michelangelo made it fig-like on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

In the 13th century a translator of the Spanish-Jewish philosopher Maimonides said it was a banana, and early Christian theologians writing in Latin opted for an apple.

This actually gave them an opportunity for a Latin pun: the Latin word for apple is malum, with a long ‘a’, while malum with a short ‘a’ means ‘evil’. Think on that as you nibble your organic Pink Lady.

The word banana, meanwhile, came into English via Portuguese or Spanish from Wolof, an Atlantic-Congo language, or possibly Mande, a branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. The fruit’s botanical name is Musa sapientum, meaning ‘fruit of the old wise men’, and as I still eat them in terrifying quantities, I shall take that as a compliment. To ‘go bananas’ is, obviously, to go mad, whereas ‘top banana’, alluding to someone important, originally meant ‘the top comedian in a vaudeville show’.

‘Probably because of a skit involving a banana’, says Tschann, stretching the gag a little.

Orange, of course, is one of the few words in the language that has no precise rhyme. (Silver is another.) It also comes to us, via Arabic and French, from the Persian word narang, and somewhere along the line it lost that initial ‘n’. Tschann asks, ‘Did the colour orange exist for English speakers before the fruit came into their lives?’ Whether it did or not, she notes that the word ‘orange’ describing the colour only appeared about 100 years after English speakers had been eating and talking about the fruit.

And why is a certain rude noise called a ‘raspberry’? Apparently this is our old friend Cockney rhyming slang, which decided that ‘raspberry tart’ was a much more polite way of saying ‘fart’.

And this is just the section on fruit!

French fries come not from France, but from Belgium. They’re called French because another meaning of that word is ‘sliced lengthwise in strips’. Ketchup comes fom a Chinese word for ‘briny fish sauce’.

At one point, Tschann gives a useful list of meanings for various pasta shapes. I knew that farfalle meant either ‘butterflies’ or ‘bow-ties’, but if you ever eat strozzapreti, that word means ‘priest-stranglers’.

Vermicelli are ‘little worms’ (yuk), but did you know that ziti, a type of macaroni, are ‘newlyweds’? It comes from maccheroni della zita, literally ‘macaroni of the bride’.

At some point the word mutated to ziti, a masculine plural word, so presumably the groom was allowed to eat them, too.

A Bloody Mary — vodka and seasoned tomato juice — is named after Mary I of England, nicknamed Bloody Mary for her tendency to have dissenters to her Catholic doctrine executed. But the earliest recorded date of Bloody Mary as a name for a cocktail wasn’t until 1939, when the New York Herald Tribune called it a ‘new pick-me-up’.

No one knows who the original Harvey Wallbanger was — or even whether he existed at all — but a more recent cocktail, the Terremoto, from the Spanish word for earthquake, was named after the 1985 Chilean earthquake.

It’s made with white wine, pineapple ice cream and grenadine. If you order a second one of these cocktails — something I personally find almost impossible to imagine — it’s called an aftershock.

Did you know that the correct name for a brandy glass was a ‘snifter’? No, neither did I.

This fine and amusingly written book is full of these wonderful gobbets of information, all strung together with Tschann’s nimble and droll prose.

Anyone who eats food and/or likes words will gain hours of innocent pleasure from this veritable feast of fun.

Every time a mass shooting occurs in the United States – and there have been 212 so far this year – leaders on both sides of the political aisle reflexively retreat to the same blame game: the right pointing to mental illness, the left saying relaxed gun laws are the real issue. 

‘It’s both, okay,’ said Washington Rep. Adam Smith, 26-year congressman and top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. 

‘The unbelievably easy access to weapons that we have in this country combined with a number of people who are not in good mental health to create an enormous problem, it’s both. It’s not an either or thing,’ he told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview. 

The lawmaker falls at the crossroads of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the centrist, problem-solving New Democrats group. 

‘When you say that mental health matters, you’re not saying that you don’t care about the guns, we need lesser access to guns,’ he said. 

Last week a gunman at an outdoor mall in Allen, Texas, opened fire with an AR-15 and killed eight people. President Biden renewed his call for an assault weapons ban; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer convened Democrats to talk gun legislation. 

But faced with a poll on Fox News showing Americans favor background checks and raising the minimum age to purchase firearms, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pivoted to mental health. 

‘We are working to address that anger and violence by going to its root cause, which is addressing the mental health problems behind it,’ Abbott said. ‘People want a quick solution. The long-term solution here is to address the mental health issue.’   

‘I think the whole nation should be leading,’ Speaker Kevin McCarthy said this week in response to a question on whether Congress should take the lead on the gun violence discussion. 

Last time Congress took major action on gun control was in June 2022, a month after a gunman in Uvalde, Texas, killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school. 

The law included $750 million to help enact ‘red flag’ laws in states throughout the country and offered funding for mental health and school security. It also enhanced background checks for gun buyers under 21 and closed the boyfriend loophole – so those convicted of domestic violence against dating partners cannot purchase weapons. 

A year on, not much has changed – at this point last year, there had been fewer mass shootings: 183. 

In 2016, there were 15,139 deaths from guns, by all manner of causes. From the start of this year to the current day, there have been more than that – 15,306. 

Asked if he thought any sort of gun package could get done with a Republican-led House and Democrat-run Senate, Smith said: ‘No, is the honest answer.’ 

‘Republicans have made it perfectly clear that they have no intention of doing anything about this because they operate under the delusion that the more guns the safer we are.’ 

Meanwhile, the debate continues over how to best handle the soaring homelessness and mental illness that has been distressing liberal cities from New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, in Smith’s home state, at a time of rising crime after the Covid-19 pandemic. 

For the rise in social discord, Smith pointed to ‘the lack of involuntary commitment in so many places in this country. We’ve shut down a lot of these institutions. We’ve stood up community based care.’

‘Do not underestimate the impact of individual mental health issues, even seemingly minor ones, on the level of conflict and instability in our society,’ he writes at the start of his forthcoming memoir, Lost and Broken, obtained by DailyMail.com. 

Just last week the killing on the subway of a homeless, mentally ill man – Jordan Neely – divided New Yorkers. 

Neely had 40 prior arrests and allegedly was threatening to kill people on the subway. He was unarmed the time 24-year-old Marine veteran Daniel Penny choked him to death. 

The issue put Mayor Eric Adams at odds with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. 

Many New Yorkers were outraged by what they saw as a disproportionate use of force – others said the incident shed light on the rising fear they have when using the city’s public transit system. 

‘It’s the left wing ideology that says let individuals do what they want to do. You know, no one’s gonna get drug treatment or mental health treatment until they’re good and ready, so just let them be,’ said Smith. 

In December, Mayor Eric Adams unveiled a policy allowing police to involuntarily bring unhoused people suffering mental illness to a hospital, generating much controversy from the progressive wing of his party. 

In Washington, the state must first prove that an individual is suffering from a mental illness and poses a threat to themselves or others. 

Meanwhile, the mental health of young people is in crisis – more than a third of those aged 18-25 (33.7 percent) report having a mental illness while only 15 percent of those over 50 years of age say the same. 

Smith, whose new book details how he overcame his own chronic pain and anxiety, said that members of his party needed to be more accountable in general – that society needs to teach ‘resilience’ rather than ‘vulnerability and dependence.’ 

The congressman said that many people are quick to find a diagnosis for their mental struggles but are slow to do the work to get better.  

‘Let’s have an open conversation about this from the standpoint of we want people to get better,’ he said. ‘There’s a lot of this, sort of just talking about it.’

‘I come from a very left-wing jurisdiction in the Seattle King County area, so maybe that’s just peculiar to my neck of the woods, but I don’t think so. I think we need to think about, how do we teach people to be resilient? To find their way through their mental and physical problems, to better know their mind and body so that they can be active, productive adults,’ Smith went on. 

‘Not, well, some of them they see the psychiatrist once a week and other than that, they hang out in bed because lord knows they’ve got something that we can’t possibly deal with.’
