Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz said he is ready to extend his contract after leading the team to Round of 16 at 2022 FIFA World Cup, although the Polish Football Association has not made a decision yet.
WARSAW, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) — Poland men’s national football team coach Czeslaw Michniewicz declared that he is ready to extend his contract after the 2022 FIFA World Cup as “they experienced a beautiful time due to the success in Qatar.”
Poland has qualified for the knock-out stage for the first time since 1986, while in the Round of 16 they lost to France 3-1. Advancing into the best 16 was a goal of the team before the tournament. However, the coach is strongly criticized due to the defensive style of playing. In consequence, Michniewicz’s future is in doubt as his contract is valid until the end of the year. The Polish Football Association (PZPN) hasn’t made a decision yet.
“If I was the president of the association, I would extend my contract. I know my players and I led them to success. I stay calm as we experienced a beautiful period as a team,” Michniewicz was quoted as saying by Polish media on Tuesday.
“13 teams from Europe participated in the FIFA World Cup. Such giants as Denmark, Belgium and Germany didn’t qualify for the knock-out stage. In the last months we lost just to Belgium, the Netherlands, Argentina and France. The critical voices about the national team are strong but I deal with that. I would like to continue my work with these players,” the coach added.
According to Polish media, Michniewicz stays in conflict with the captain Robert Lewandowski.
“It’s complete nonsense. As a coach I’ve done my job while I’m still being asked about negative things. My players suffer because we don’t talk about our success in Poland,” Michniewicz concluded. ■
